  • My nan actually went out and bought herself an iPhone 4 a week ago, lol. Its awesome.

  • ahahaha that was awesome!

new (huge) fan of yours geriatric1927 :D

  • Its is a big issue - if you search for RACE ONLINE 2012 you will see a great campaign that is trying to tackle the issues in this blog. Its never easy but the benefits are pain to see from geriatric is KING OF THE SILVER SURFERS!

  • Found you by pure chance on the 5 year youtube page and glad i did, been looking through loads of your videos and subscribed :) your a great person and keep up the good work, ill be following you from now on!

  • i you from your "youtube story"

(: i think this is really sweet, and its a good idea,

  • Hi,

Its nice to see that your making an effort to get elderly people online. Technologie has ran through our family. My grandad is good a technology and uses he laptop all day. Getting them to experence and what the internet can do and how it can benfit people so much

    Thanks

    Alex

  • I don't think old people need communication like this. Nor does any one else! The developers of all this media stuff should stop developing it. They just waste world's resources.

  • @laura43fun Advancement is part of the human race, and it isn't bad at all. A 100 year old woman is communicating with her FAMILY, something I'm sure she would deeply love to do freely at any time. Thankfully elderly people are getting a taste of that. Your comment is very negative as you are suggesting that we deny these people the ability to communicate very easily with family. I think this is a beautiful thing.

  • @death55546 My comment wasn't against old people. It was against all this new media nonsense. And if you protect the developers of this media stuff -> I say innovation sucks, it leads us to even more problems as we already have.

  • @laura43fun No, it WAS against old people, because right now this is a prime way of communicating with their friends and family before they pass away. Trying to take that away is taking it away from these people, and therefore denying them easy access to communication.

  • @death55546 Look 50 years ago. Old people didn't need stuff like that at all to communicate to family. And look how old the human race is. Technology wasn't necessary at all. No we can extinct ourselves by destroying our planet, that must be a great ability (sarcasm).

AND YOU SIR WANT ME TO BE LIKE "Old people suck" <- I didn't say that, nor anything close. You want me to say that. I'm not talking to you anymore.

  • @laura43fun You heard him in the video, he said these people are talking to people that they haven't spoken to in years. So 50 years ago is was probably pretty hard.

  • @laura43fun Without the internet and all this 'new media'. I would never have met my current girlfriend who lives 4600 miles away in the US of A. Or a large majority of my friend's who are online too (not afraid to admit it.)

New media brings us to new heights every time its updated. Sure it creates problems, but it brings many MANY more benefits then problems. Also, the fact your using this 'new media' (The Internet) to communicate your 'reasons for no need of new media' (the internet) fails.

  • @MrGamingAdventure and @death55546 You don't understand what I was saying and I don't want to explain it ' cause you wont understand. You live YOUR life and I live MINE.

P.s.: When you're old you'll probably talk the same about the media that will be new WHEN you're old. I say it's better to perfect the tech we have now rather than make new tech. Peace, out!

  • Hello Peter.

Feels like such a long while since i first watched your videos.. Just came across them again, Glad your still at it!

    Keep up the good work!

  • I love this. I used to work in Information Technology at a Continuing Care Community(Masonic Health Systems) and my main job was to help the elderly with any computer issues and such. Most of who I helped were dependent, basically a retirement community, but I spent most days teaching the elderly how to use certain aspects of their computers, and they almost always caught on. Like you said, it is very rewarding. Only left that job for college, would have stayed if I could, I loved helping them.

  • coolest grandpa ever

  • My late father and I used to have a talk on the phone once in a while; one of those talks might have well lasted for some three hours, because we lived over 200 kilometres away from each other. His brothers and sisters lived even further away, so the family would not often see each other. Myfather died in the end of 2006, and so, the Internet was still "slower" then, and Skype was not yet around. It's really sad, because I know that my Dad would have enjoyed the possibilities we have nowadays.

  • CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  • As usual you're so awesome! This is a good thing. The world from 1800 to 1900 wasn't that huge of a change. 1900 to 2000 it mind boggling. People forget elderly people have had a lot of adjustments to make in this lifetime.

  • that was incredible what it has done for Ida. Good job Peter on all your hard work and success.

  • Peter,

I think that this young centinarian is more aware than most folks 30 years her junior.

She seems to be of sound mind to me.

Hearing disibilities can strike at any age.

I wish that her family had video links with her more often.

It would be a blessing for her..AND.. her children .. grandchildren..greatgrands as well.

I'd love the chance to pick the brain of someone of that age.

  • I teach senior citizens in Florida how to use their computers. My facebook is John the Computer tutor.

  • A heartwarming video, Peter. Thanks you for sharing it with us. My Dad has been using a computer for 10 years or more, but now at 82, (he's a young Geriatric1928), he forgets even how to send emails. We bought him a new laptop for his 80th birthday, but if he even switches it on at all, it's to play cards on while Mum is watching the soaps!

  • It's very touching and Ida has a lovely spirit! It does make me feel a little sad for her that her family is not there in person. I wonder who was there to set up the camera? I hope she has family nearby to keep her company.

Thank you for posting, Geriatric1927! You are a gift.

  • the video with the old lady brought me to tears.....

  • I am so glad you are doing something that makes you happy and also is a great service to the older people. I wish my mom was into computers-I could tell she really enjoyed it. lol

  • Thank you for sharing that video, it is heartwarming to see different generations connecting in this way.

  • Ida sounds like a wonderful lady. So rewarding teaching isnt it.

  • Computers are amazing to help old people get in touch with their families, especially when thei're in homes. The old lady seems to enjoy it in the video.

And the fact is, everything is Internet related nowadays, commercials include Internet adress instead of telephone numbers, etc...

A computer is needed, now, managing to teach everyone how to use one is rather complicated.

  • Yeah, it's a shame that more older folks don't use the technology we have now.

I've told my granny she could talk face to face with my dad, look up recipes, look up maps, look up numbers, order stuff, etc.

And despite her calling me constantly to ask those sorts of questions, she hates computers and won't use them. Why? Circular reasoning and oldness.

  • Congratulations to Ida! Bringing computing to the elderly is a very worthwhile project. My Dad is 86 & does have trouble, but he's recently switched from dial-up to broadband & is pleased as punch. I recently turned 60 so am officially "elderly" I guess. Not working any more, but have been helping people 20 years younger with PC problems, so it cuts both ways!

  • Wonderful video, Peter. I do believe that it's the communication that really gets the elderly involved, once you can get them past the basics. My own Dad thought they were of little use, until I showed him email, and then live chat in text form on ICQ. Then the computer suddenly became a daily tool, and a source of great enjoyment for him. He didn't live long enough to experience Skype, and live video, but he would have loved it, as Ida does, with four generations together "in the same room."

  • that is such a wonderful thing.....I wish my mom would think like them....its never too late

  • Great video, Peter. We tried to get my grandparents interested in the Internet (and we actually did exchange a few emails) -- but the only service available where they were is dial-up, which gave them a bad impression of what the Internet can offer. They're in a nice assisted-living facility near my parents now, but I'm not sure if we'll be able to convince them to get back online. We plan to try, though.

  • That just put a smile on my face. The old lady is having so much fun. That's what it's all about, right?

  • i feel sorry for that girl talking to her grandma

  • this is awesome. also, i can'T wait to see what gen Y will be like when they are elderly.

  • I skype with my 86 yo dad, it's hilarious. Sykpe needs to include a text option, for when the sound stalls, so I can write text to clarify when he can't hear.

  • @joanswitches There's already instant messaging in Skype, just right click and choose chat.

  • @joanswitches There is a text function in Skype.

  • I agree with tigerlily, you are awesome Peter, you should be rewarded for all the good you do for others, god bless you mate.x

  • Gonna be honest, If I tried to teach my grandparents how to use a computer, they'd literally forget what I told them before I left the room. :\

  • I think it's wonderful that the senior citizens are taught how to use the computer

  • Peter, this is just beautiful! It is so nice to see people reaping the benefits of technology they otherwise wouldn't be able to use. It must be such a good feeling to be a part of this. Communication has certainly come a long way and it most excellent to know that not only the younger generations are enjoying it so immensly.

  • My grandmother of age 70+ has her own Nintendo DS Lite (which she regularly plays), a Wii Console which is technically her son's but which she also uses sometimes, and her own Desktop computer which she uses occasionally.

Recently she asked me about the internet because she finds it fascinating and wants to get hooked up to, and i quote "see what all the fuss is about".

She is an amazing woman. :)

  • The older people who are the most difficult to convince about the internet are the ones who live alone in their own homes...

  • Wonderful. Bless that elderly lady.

  • I find it wonderfully beautiful that elderly folk are using technology.

  • Ah, so that's where the phrase heartwarming originated

  • Coolio:P

  • It is a pity to see so many older folks not getting the benifits and entertainment uses from using the internet. And it seems after they get started it is hard to get them to stop! The internet is a blessing. Ready to be used.

  • Why do people use Skype apart from PC to Phone calls?

  • You have a big challenge ahead of you. It's not that most of the elderly can't compute it just that they see it as something that they neither need or want to earn to do.

    God Bless...

    Randall M. Rueff

  • You are awesome, Grandad!

  • Nice vid Peter :)

  • What a lovely gift that was to her! Really special.

  • Excellant video, I think she did well on the computer, So many elderly people seem to dislike computers. perhaps this video will inspire some to try it.

  • This is great! It sure seems like the family enjoys chatting with Ida A LOT!! My grandmother on my father's side lived to 95, but never wanted to touch a computer, but my grandmother on my mother's side is 84, and LOVES her computer. She had done video calls and texts the family also! Another super video post Peter!

  • This brought tears to my eyes! You cold see the joy and love here!!

My grandma and grandpa know how to use email, but I should teach them how to skype!

  • My grandma turns 90 tomorrow and we have bought her a computer and will teach her how to email and skype us so she can keep in easier contact with us and let her read things, search things, watch things and learn new things and write down her memories :) she is as excited as we are in getting it all set up :)

  • Ida was my grandmothers name ......

everyone can benefit from skping and the like, but there is always the chance that with one-to-one conversations on camera that actual physcial visits will happen less and less. Of course, for people that don't have any contact to begin with then the camera is certainly better than no contact at all

just be wary it does not end up a tool of convenience and an excuse to opt out of visits

    peace

  • @sweetypie000 I totally agree with you. It should be seen as something extra, not as a replacement.

  • Aww your so lovely :) i wish my grandad was liike you :D

  • My grandma is only in her 60's and she refuses to get a computer! lol

I think maybe in a few years I am going to get a new one and give her my old one and make her try it!

I think it's a wonderful way to keep in touch with family who don't live too close..

  • I think this is wonderful. It must be very exciting for the ones that have relatives far away especially. When they learn about google and the "library at their fingertips" it can be wonderful as well.

I think the ones that are reluctant to try are afraid they can't learn it. I am sure it is very intimidating. I remember it being so to me and I am 57.

  • I am still trying to get my nan to use a computer. You are certainly an inspiration for her. x

  • god bless you sir

  • :) Very nice message. I hope that I keep as open a mind as you as I age.

  • A 100 year old Skyping. That's very impressive!

  • you are getting younger sir
