why grow them upside down? right side up gives the same effect also with the watermelon you dont decide when to pick the watermelon the plant does pick it to early and its nasty let the vine die and dry up usually big watermelon is from good genetics
The garden looks good. Some of the peppers look like they are running up,and not bushing out. Give them alittle more room between plants.I put about a 3 1/2 4 ft steak in the ground and when the tomatoes hit the top I trim them. Every year I do it and they produce well. If you see the blossom end rot get some spray for them. The dry conditons or excessive heat will suck the calcium out of the ground. Blossom end rot can show up on squash, and peppers too. The treatment is easy and well worth it.
if you cut the tops the plant will produce two branches where you snip the tops at and continue to grow. If you let them grow to tall they will fall over eventually and either snap and then die, or simply bend over and continue to grow. If you're scared about them snapping and dieing, then simply "pinch" the top and then slightly bend the plant while pinching it ... the plant will then continue to grow but in the direction that you bend it after pinching it. hope that helps you.
I have to say this is really impressive!! Your doing great!! One suggestion talk a little slower, your heaving for breath and it makes people nervous lol! Take your time, no rush we enjoy what you have to say.
hello as a kid we had a huge garden and what we did was cut the tops down..also if you was the remove some of the yellow flowers away you will give more of he nuterance to the 1s that are growing...marie
few things even though i know this is old. i would have asked my neighbour if i could let the tomatoes grow over the fince, and let them have whats on that side, just for kicks. also, that was a huge bunch of flowers, i couldnt believe that. been watching tomany videos like this, think i might start my own tomarrow. good videos by the way, not a lot of these videos show the growth process, just how tos really.
so my teacher told me that you can cut off any foliage as long as it doesn't exceed 1/3 of all the foliage. this was meant for trees, but it might be the same for all plants :)
@jfar8504 You can make a solution with Diatomaceous earth and spray the plants - works on all sorts of bugs. You can sprinkle on ground around the plants too. This is VERY CHEAP and there are organic sources - look for PermaGuard online or in feed stores. It's all natural - million yr old diatom fossils are rich in SILICA. Is also good for humans and animals. I take it daily. Helps intestines, hair, nails, and detoxes you from heavy metals and radiation (we get low levels daily from Japan).

as i said jason, pinch the plants at week 4/5 (learn more about pinching and pruning), do not let them get out of hand, since you going to have 100's of tomatos and peppers i would suggest you learn how to dry them for storage
Great video! You should do this again this year. I plan on making a few upside down veggie planters on my balcony. I have to wait a couple weeks because I live in Canada, but this video makes me want to start planting now. Keep up the great work!
Hey Jason, everything looks really nice. Just looking to start one of these this year bc we have a large tree that drained the life out of everything I tried to grow last year. Where did you get the big blue "party tubs" (for lack of a better description) that the beans are growing in? Best wishes for this year!
Hey. That is actually a perfect description because when I found them my first thought was that you could really fill that thing with lot of beer and ice :). I got them at either Lowe's or Home Depot. I can't remember which one. They were great for the beans.
Pretty cool way to grow. The first suggestiong I'd like to make is - have you considered adding a Wick system for watering the more 'thirsty' plants like tomatoes ? Makes the whole thing more productive and easier to water properly. Cheers :)
I tried to grow a few tomatoe plants this way. I wasn't to thrilled about the yield i had and had to constantly water them. I think its a more gimmicky way to garden. Next year I will go back to the old way. I am on the square foot garden kick and think it is a great way to garden with the least amount of work and the biggest yield.
Nice garden. What are you feeding the plants? I stay away from chemical ferts but your plants look fab. You must have lots of bees in your area, you have a lot of pollination going on.
Pull some of your tomatoe suckers off and root them for new plants. You can do the same with any pepper stems that break off. Also, peppers can be overwintered indoors and will produce larger plants next year. It's a nice challenge if you have a sunny spot indoors.
If you are careful you can train your tomatoes along the fence like any other vine, up is better but if you don't have the room just do what you have to do. maybe stretch some twine or rope between the fence posts to tie it to so you can train it along the top. some determinate tomatoes will get 8-10 feet from the base.. I love the giant egg plants what is that variety name?
Wow that giant tomatoe plant looks great! I wouldn't let it grow *too* tall, since I would think the higher the flower blossom is on the plant, the smaller and less quality the tomatoe would be. That has just been what I have learned. But your garden looks great!!
Great update Jason! I wish my peppers were doing as well as yours...some varieties of mine just aren't "putting out". Your tall tomato plants are wonderful! A lucky neighbor if they start to droop over the other side of your fence! I lost a huge green tomato cuz it was so heavy that when it rained it broke off the vine. My tomato vines are also so long that I am starting to train them sideways and support as much weight as possible. Glad to see your first year is "growing" well! -George RyeNY
Thanks for the comments George. I still wish we could have some of your rain. We haven't had a good days rain in months. Hopefully your peppers will get moving. I definitely have a lot of them now.
The advice I've found is to trim back all the leaves that don't cover the tomatoes from the sun, since they need some cover. Some people trim back all the leaves, I guess letting the plant get sun from the tomatoes.
Can it. So you have vegetables during the off months.
The Tabasco pepper will live year round if brought inside. During the winter they won't take much water and look like it will die, but it will have more than enough peppers the second year. After 3 years, you can have over 500 peppers off one plant. You can even dig it up and re-pot it, just take it easy on the roots. I had one for 5 years.
Pull the suckers on the tall tomatoes, try to pull them on the longest branches, and anywhere after were the tomatoes are growing. Don't remove ANY suckers on younger growth or lower part of the plant.
I would be careful using string to tie up the stems, once they get heavy enough the string could damage them. I use a roll of plastic material that is about 1/2" wide to tie them up with. Just an idea.
Beans - I stop my beans when they reach the top of the frame and ir seems to encourage side shoots from the bottom up at every leaf joint.
Tomatoes - I stop my tomatoes at 4 trusses because it helps the fruit develop but we don't have as much sunshine as you. You could put up some support and train the tomatoes along it to keep the trusses coming. Be patient, green tomatoes seem to take an eternity to ripen and then, one day, you have loads of ripe tomatoes.
your tomaotes upside down garden looks better and I dont have any eggplants I dont think our climat can grow them. watermellon? nope it doesnt grow here. every thing looks good.
Thanks. Eggplant needs lots of warm weather. I was surprised how well they have done for me. I have tons of peppers now and am looking forward to my next large batch of red tomatoes to maybe try to make some sauces.
Clipping the leading stem at the top will make them grow out instead of up. Nothing wrong with bending and creeping tomato as long as it doesn't break; so ease it along.
Research a book called "Sea Energy Agriculture' about the importance of minerals found in sea water or sea solids. I'm experimenting with himalayan salt and a mixture/solution I made easily called 'sole'. Anyways, it is fascinating! Checkout 'Ocean Solution' and their website.
Thanks for the tip. So if I clip the leader stem will it always continue to grow out? Or will the branches that either have tomatoes or flowers eventually stop producing tomatoes. I didn't want to initially clip the leaders because I thought that it would stop producing tomatoes after what was on the plant was picked.
When you prune the main leader of an indeterminate tomato, more of the growth can divert to leaders that develop at the junction of the the leaf branches. It will actually increase your yield. Indeterminates will continue to produce fruit as long as the vine is alive (I had one indoors for two years once) You may need to prune out every other leader that develops, to make sure you have enough leaves to nourish the plant.
Determinate plants put on tomatoes all at once, and then stop producing.
I hear you :). I was gone a couple days came back and it was just there. It almost looks fake. It will be interesting to see if all the flowers in the cluster turn into tomatoes. I don't think they will.
They are actually sitting on pine straw. I read that leaving them on soil can make them rot, so that is why I put the pine straw down. Should that be ok?
You may want to pick those beans, or the plant will stop producing. Once they get large (the beans) the plant will think that it has done it's job, which is to produce more bean seeds, so if you let them stay on the vine too long, they will stop making more beans. I usually pick mine every couple days. Looks great! Noreen

You can use old T-shirts cut into strips to tie up the tomatoes. Works great, allows for wind and growth.
For your watermelons, when the little curly tendril on the stem closest to your melon goes brown instead of green, your melon is finally ripe :-)
