when i retired from the Army i went to many job fairs and the prison systems were always there recruiting, after sitting through one of their briefing i realized being a CO wasn't the job for me, i have much respect for what those guys have to go through on a daily basis but i would rather do two more tours in iraq than be a CO because at least we got to carry weapons while in iraq.

Actually many officers have or are in the process of earning a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate. In Texas the average pay is around 28-35,000 a year, the 48th worst pay scale in the united states for the largest and most violent system in the country. As well many CO's are former police, military, or teachers looking for work. Many are current Firefighters and EMTs. Still think you know everything?
@originalShorai I am an officer and I barley have any other training besides my EMT. Many officers don't have any other training and some don't have a high school diploma. I mean, there's not that many people who can go through with that kind of stress. We do get paid 33k a year, but some prisons are different than others. I get riot training, etc, but I work at a medium security prison. No one there is really going to riot. A job positon for the DOC depends on where you're working.
@FastGuppy Don't take a job in a maximum security prison/hospital. And btw, COs go through a lot of stress and take on a huge responsibility. And most of them are poor and have never been in position of power before, so of course there might be some cases of abuse. But that only happens sometimes. So, unless you want to do your part and become an officer and make things better to whoever is mad at correction officers in general, I'd say shut the fuck up.

@Greggfossil We have a high rate of divorce and the stress shortens our lives and causes mental illnesses. our sense of humor gets twisted by proximity to the insane and we are discouraged to do acts of kindness. If you go straight on policy while doing what you can to reform them you become a target and te stress becomes almost unbearable to even the strongest willed. Go too easy and inmates get jellous and they want to kill you, too hard and you get a hit on you.

@lizakali I admit I live no where near Kingston Ontario, and reputedly that is a tough place, having had friends that were both inmates and guards in my lifetime, I heard some crazy/bad stories, but nothing ever like this. B.C pen had a bad rep as well, and my friends Gramma helped get that shut down. But that said, our prisons are nothing like Americas. We are just more moderate all the way around.

@16Freeto16 Most institutions don't require a college education in order to work in their facility. There are some that require a bachelor's and they usually pay more; something like that you'd have to check with the institution you're looking at. As for classes to take; find a college which offers an associates, or bachelor's program in Criminal Justice; those are the kind of classes you should take. Depending on where you live they will have different methods of gaining information.
I'm a correctional officer and so far I haven't had a real big problem with a inmate. Ive had some act crazy but never did me harm. I come to work and I'm the same way everyday. I don't give them any more than the state requires and no less. Everyone is equal and everyone is treated fair. If you come to work being a asshole everyday then your looking for a inmate to shank your ass!!!

federal prisons are the hardest you have to have a clean record as far as your credit make sure you dont owe any money for school loans cars that were repo'd that sort of thing plus you can't have any negative results from your present employer like write ups or verbal consoling.

when i retired from the Army i went to many job fairs and the prison systems were always there recruiting, after sitting through one of their briefing i realized being a CO wasn't the job for me, i have much respect for what those guys have to go through on a daily basis but i would rather do two more tours in iraq than be a CO because at least we got to carry weapons while in iraq.

Actually many officers have or are in the process of earning a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate. In Texas the average pay is around 28-35,000 a year, the 48th worst pay scale in the united states for the largest and most violent system in the country. As well many CO's are former police, military, or teachers looking for work. Many are current Firefighters and EMTs. Still think you know everything?

@originalShorai I am an officer and I barley have any other training besides my EMT. Many officers don't have any other training and some don't have a high school diploma. I mean, there's not that many people who can go through with that kind of stress. We do get paid 33k a year, but some prisons are different than others. I get riot training, etc, but I work at a medium security prison. No one there is really going to riot. A job positon for the DOC depends on where you're working.

And most of them are poor and have never been in position of power before, so of course there might be some cases of abuse. But that only happens sometimes. @Greggfossil We have a high rate of divorce and the stress shortens our lives and causes mental illnesses. our sense of humor gets twisted by proximity to the insane and we are discouraged to do acts of kindness. If you go straight on policy while doing what you can to reform them you become a target and te stress becomes almost unbearable to even the strongest willed. Go too easy and inmates get jellous and they want to kill you, too hard and you get a hit on you.

B.C pen had a bad rep as well, and my friends Gramma helped get that shut down. But that said, our prisons are nothing like Americas. We are just more moderate all the way around.

1. Be at least 19 years of age.
2. Be a U.S Citizen
3. Have a High School diploma or equivalent.
4. Have a valid Driver's License.
5. Pass a drug test.
6. Be of good moral character.
7. Pass a criminal background check.

There are some that require a bachelor's and they usually pay more; something like that you'd have to check with the institution you're looking at. As for classes to take; find a college which offers an associates, or bachelor's program in Criminal Justice; those are the kind of classes you should take. Depending on where you live they will have different methods of gaining information.

I'm a correctional officer and so far I haven't had a real big problem with a inmate. Ive had some act crazy but never did me harm. I come to work and I'm the same way everyday. I don't give them any more than the state requires and no less. Everyone is equal and everyone is treated fair. federal prisons are the hardest you have to have a clean record as far as your credit make sure you dont owe any money for school loans cars that were repo'd that sort of thing plus you can't have any negative results from your present employer like write ups or verbal consoling.

At my institution we've had several officers stabbed, and some even killed. I've seen several of my friends lying in hospital beds with their heads split open.
