  • dazed and confused?

  • Hey bro ~

I'm lookin to get back at it after 20 years off.

What pedals do you recoomend for double bass?

  • @StowAlex

They reissued the Camco pedals. I'll be buying one and will let you know if they still rock but I used to play one in the 80s and I remember how much I loved it. They do come in double pedals. What I can confirm is that the Pearl Eliminator double pedal is very adjustable and quite smooth. I would suggest that for now.

  • @GrooveDrummin gene hoglan swears by the old camco (dw) pedals. he's buying em all up! what is the sticking for the first fill between tom and snare that starts at .16?

  • @StowAlex

    I forgot to mention...

You took a break for 20 years? Wow! Great to hear you got back into it!

  • @GrooveDrummin

    ~ LOL ~

I played out alot when I was 17 to 23, so ALMOST 20 years~ I'm 40 now. Did a few studio & live recordings, nothing big time. Don't know why I waited to get back at it, i LOVE it. Just had a bit of a busy & crazy life for a while. ANYHOW, thanks for the info!

  • Thank you, Dan, this is very inspiring! Great work!

  • Drums sound great. You have a good sound kit that's versatile. Sounds great for this, for jazz, funk etc. Good stuff.

  • nice shoes!

  • I bet a lot of people that watch your videos immediately go running for their kits. Very inspiring and entertaining.

  • hi dan can you tell me what the difference in sound is between a snare of 5" by 14" and 6.5" by 14" ?

  • @RubenVW95

If you search for "memphis drum shop supraphonic" you'll find vids that demo the sound for you to judge the differences. The shallower snare will have a higher pop but less bottom than the 6.5.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • Inspirational!! Really good feel and technic. you make it look way to easy!!

  • You are an inspiration sir. In this clip you're inovating, going into a different realm as an offshoot of Bonham IMO and it's imminently listenable. Great work!

  • Which snare are you using in this video? it isnt the Ludwig 402 thats for sure

  • @dsckakashi

    Ludwig classic maple 8x14 (LS484)

  • @GrooveDrummin nice One :D sounds really great

  • Serious drumming - loving it!!!!

  • i think some of this is from a famous solo called "the drum also waltzes" which bonzo copied.....max roach was the original...time sig is 3/4

  • Is this the end of Dazed & Confused from TSRTS ?

  • This is great stuff!

  • what year are these drums from?

  • @Boss79ize

    2001

  • what a great sound my friend has that drum, I wish I could afford one of that, haha

    incredible solo !!

  • Awesome playin man...

  • This is real!!!! watching again

  • I love you! xD

  • ALWAYS FUN TO WATCH YOUR VIDS!!..GREAT FEEL AND GREAT SOUNDING KIT!!

  • Can someone explain how to play this? :<

  • @willai90

Hi-hats keep time on the beat and the kick plays on the upbeat, pretty much steady throughout. The hands play a pattern (see at the beginning) that must always keep the "feel" and once you get the idea you can color with variations as I did.

  • I love this!!! My right foot wont stay the steady easy beat and wants to go wild when I start the fills. It's hard to coordinate keeping the right foot simple through the fills. I'm still practicing though.. fantastic!

  • awesome!! Damn dude, it's fun watching you play! Usually i watch a drum video for about 5 seconds and move on. But i'm watching yours all the way through for sure>>>

  • @fleebis44

I am happy to hear you like it :)

  • dig that snare!

  • Amazing drumming! Love all your videos!

  • awesome! dude

  • The greatest thing a person can ever be is a teacher!

Thank you Dan! Mark Swanson Whittier Ca.

  • @markswanson1

    You're welcome!

  • so this is like the end part of Dazed?

  • @Pepper2Jason

    yes ;)

  • bonzos cousin???

  • @diagreen

When I met Jason Bonham, I remember saying to him I wish I had his genes. He replied with, "what my Levis"? :) Great guy btw!

  • @GrooveDrummin jajaja I didnt know you met jason =O

  • @guzylad5

    yes, back in around '96.

  • @GrooveDrummin cool =D, how was he like?

  • @guzylad5

great guy, missed his family big time just like Bonzo did.

  • @GrooveDrummin Bonzo was like the best dad =/ Bonzo had problems with the drinking =(

  • you are great!

  • dude that was fuckin mind-blowing. keep it up!

  • I still think U need a pedal Kettle right to the left of that Hihat!!

You would fall right into that in a heart beat! Very tasteful paradiddle action with your left! ;p)

  • @AldridgeHalenFreak

    I'd LOVE one or ....two!!

When I was in high school we had 3 of the really nice Ludwig tympanies and my friends would always ask me to play that part in Moby Dick...we all know the part. LOUD LOUD LOUD and had as much fun as a pig in **** ! ...until the teacher came in and gave me --what pigs like to be in...hehehe.

  • AHhhh yes !! Thanks to Dan The Man I get another schooling on a cool recognized groove!! AAA+ One of the best Local Legends on U Tube!! No Doubt. FUN!!!

    Thanx Dan!

  • @AldridgeHalenFreak

    Thanks brother

  • I don't know how I missed this one?......Your a beast Dan..........That footwork is just intense....make that ....ALL OF IT....!!!!

  • @thunderdrumass

This is basically the upstroke kick lick with different phrasing on the hands. Feet are pretty much the same :)

  • Cool!!

  • yeah, great, i really enjoyed listening... :)

  • Hey! I know that was the end of DAZED from SRTS and it was GREAT,but why didn't you do the little(albeit bad ass) little solo deal at the end right before Plant says "Jimmy Page electric guitar"?

  • If only i had a Ludwig, not to say that the TAMA Swingstar isn't a good kit or anything but the best drummers have ludwigs.

  • @VanHalenLedZeppelin7

AHhh Now don't be too hard on yourself there VLZ. I have a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute in Blue Sparkle fade with 2 24" Kicks. Some of the greatest drummers ..Aldridge,Weckl...etc play Yamaha ..most cases the drums are no better than the drummer. My other kit though is a Ludwig Amber Vistalite. They sound superb. I use Hydraulic Evan heads. Iam also having a kit made by Ludwig here like this kit only in Blue Sparkle. Clasic Maple. But ain't nothing wrong with TAMA!!

  • @AldridgeHalenFreak

Please plug my name to Ludwig, maybe I'll get an endorsement some day and be able to "test" a bunch of different sizes.

  • @AldridgeHalenFreak I will admit though that the Powerglide pedal that I have is rather good. Nice and smooth. I put some coated emporers on too.

  • That kit sounds amazing! that kick is rockin! What kind of kit is this? How do you have it mic'd?

  • Ludwig classic maple...i'm working on a dvd that will explain how I get this sound.

    Thank you for watching!

  • The best drumming site on YT bar non!

Love the way the kit sounds. I'd be interested in your snare tuning details in particular.

The spirit of JB lives on in this man!

    Cheers

    Phil

  • Amazing!! The best drum sound on utube, would be great if you did a video on tuning!

  • Do you use coated heads on both your batter and resonant head?

  • batter yes, reso clear.

A coated head on the reso muffles the sound a little more than clear.

  • Awesome!!!! Love the sound of the Ludwigs!!!! Great tribute to Bonzo as well. Great job. 5 stars for sure.....great playing!

  • love it

I love how the snares been tuned :)

  • very relaxed..you make it look easy. nice work

  • You are one of the hottest around if not the hottest! Keeps on grooving!

  • what drumkit is that?

  • Ludwig classic maple

  • You really know how to tune the drums, like the pros.

  • Why don't you explain ? =(

  • I'm surprised that there arent a bunch asshats leaving comments about travis barker. Seems like every drum video I watch has some dickheads talking about how great he is. This dude smokes him with one hand

  • fuckin a right bro, this guys almost as fun as watchin porn...

  • hey man loving this vid and need some help:)

you know the crossover pattern you do at 1.40 could you help me figure it out?? thanks

  • Kinda hard to put in words but...it's played in a triplet with the -1- alternating between the snare and floor. If you can slow the vid down it may help you see what's going on. Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • what kind of snare do you have in this vid?

  • ludwig maple colliseum 8x14" LS484

  • 8th note doubles with hihat and kick?

  • pretend your left foot is on another bass drum pedal when it's actually on the hi-hat. The motion is the same is double bass drumming except left foot is on the hi-hats. I hope that better describes it :)

  • but ur doing 1, 2 an 3 with the hi hat , n then the &s with the kick right??

  • Yes, correct.

  • I love this groove; great performance too.

  • wow that was amazing, it might sound dumb but could u kinda explain whats going on... specially with ur foot. thanx

  • by foot i ment the roght one cuz i can c ur left...

  • Think of it as double kick with hats on the beat and kick on the off beat. Double kick every so often, but not necessary :)

  • cool, hey thanx for answering, sorry to be writing so much but seriously, this vid blew my mind... n im trying to do something that sounds like it.... so yea, awesome

  • ur welcome. No prob..I'm here to help. Thanks

  • Wow, my new favorite Subscription on YT.

You are truly amazing, and the kit sounds fabulous. Are they coated Emps. on the toms?

How is your tuning method for the 13" rack? That sounds awesome

    Cheers

    Phil

  • Thank you very much!

    Yes, Emperors on all toms.

13" - medium tight batter / tighter reso

    Thanks again!

  • Yeah I recognize this groove from the end of TSRTS's Dazed and Confused. Nice job.

  • fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm definitely putting this video as a favourite on my channel !!! Could swear I was hearing Bonham play.

  • you own at drums 5/5 subscrition right away:D

  • don't use any or much eq when recording...you can do that later but even then only +/- 3-6 max at any frequency. No fx or compression during recording. After tracks are recorded you may eq: kick -3db 400hz, snare +2db 8k, overheads -6db 120hz +4db 14.5k. When you are happy mix all tracks to 2ch stereo. This is where you can add plugins and/or fx (but not much). I generally use some compression and a bit of eq. The last thing to do is normalize levels...done. Hope that helped.

  • Hey man, great stuff.......question..I have a similar kit, but im having a little trouble adjusting my vintage 69 Speed King Pedal...I know how and all, just wondering where you set yours at...thanx....Steve

  • Thank you. Each time I had a Speed King I would tighten both springs equally and pretty tight. If I remember correctly it was about 15 to 18 turns from a totally loosend off spring. ...but I sold mine to buy a Pearl Eliminator, way better pedal in my opinion.

  • really....I actually considered one of those....advantages?

  • The Eliminator is so adjustable you'll wonder why you didn't try one sooner. You can even change the cams according to your needs. Very smooth pedal and built tough. To add: I tried DW, Yamaha, Tama IC (overrated) and a new Speed King but the Pearl was my fav. I regret to say the worst was the new Speed King. The drums however, blow away all including DW.

  • You did not like the DW 5000? That's the best pedal on earth in my opinion.

  • The DW 5000 was the next in line. Great pedal as well but I found the Eliminator to be smoother and the adjustability sold me.

  • Hey man nice groove, what software do u use to record with?

  • Thanks, vegas audio pro.

  • hey i use the same, any good tips on a good sound? I just started using mine.

  • Damned fine job, sir!!

  • Great,my compliment.

    Long live rock n' roll

  • wow ... great great great

  • Tight!

  • u are always change ur drum set... but anyway, always admire your drum playing... keep on gud job

  • Wow, that was awesome!

  • well done my friend.

  • Awesome!

  • Love it! Another nice one

  • hey really great stuff

can you tell me what your doing on your bass drum?

    thanks

  • Thank you. For the most part, single 1/8th notes on the up-beat and the hi-hat plays 1/8th notes on the down-beat. Basically, if you watch my feet you'll notice they go back and forth (kind of like double bass drumming) creating 16th notes. Hope that helps.

  • what about the quick doubles?

  • yes, those are two 16ths (in a triplet) thrown in every so often on the kick. Hats are still on 1 of the triplet when played.

  • Awesome man. Do you EQ your drums at all?

  • Thanks. A bit on kick and snare. Overheads have a little eq too with some compression. I use iZotope Ozone to master the final mix.

  • Thank you, the kit sounds amazing
