  • Do you have suggestions for doing evolution sims on Mac? The software I've researched so far is Windows-only.

  • You can't compare real life creatures with their complexities with these moving boxes. That doesn't seem fair.

  • So who does the selection work? Do the ones which go further pass down information to the next generation mixed in with a little bit of mutation?

  • QWOP anyone? :-D

  • But can you simulate environment as well? Mix it all together can you designate certain food objects.

  • the last was called under the creatures "The He Man Creature"

  • can sbd please give me the downloading link with no log-in shits, who is free and if it can be, full version? :)

  • but is it art?

  • is it likely that the source code for this program could have been generated randomly?

  • Looks amazing!

    What is the software called?

  • Looks amaing!

What is the software you are using called?

  • They're all saying "hey, why are we doing this again?"

    "God told us to, man."

  • 4:28 = Neo from The Matrix!

  • obviously catepillars are great.

  • where can i make some of these

  • lol , 4:40 so reminded me of glados in portal saying "you got to fling yourself"

  • What controls the color of the creatures different parts, or is it random. Also how did you end up with so many different creatures. Usually GAs favor one 'superior' solution and the rest are discarded. Oh and at 0:21 it seems you evolved a narwhal. =)

  • The colors are encoded in the genome but it is random at the beginning of the evolution. Iterative module have the color...

For the diversity of results in fact there is many different evolutions, almost one complete evolution for each creatures you see in the video.

  • trippy! some of those slinky looking caterpillars look crazy.

  • Can you show the actual evolution process taking place? Because for all we know you just created that using a few formulas and it didn't actually "evolve" itself due to variables in the simulation that would cause some of them to live and the ones not fit to die. Evolution sort of requires more than one organism and a bunch of random mutations to occur. I don't see that in this video.

  • In fact, in these video you see only the result... During the evolution process, I use a population of creature, I test them one by one in the simulation. To get a new population, I apply mutation on the creatures. If you want more details, the best is to read our research articles on my homepage.

  • @nlassabe how can we get the program u use?

  • @nlassabe These simulations look like the best kind of inspiration for sci fi producers to portray truly alien life.

  • wow, this is great, i also want to learn about these, can u tell me pls how hard is to create such genetic algorithm, to simulate such virtual evolution?

    r u a professional ?

  • It is not very easy to get good result.

It was a research project during my phd.

  • I see, i would like to do sth similar for a competition, but it has to be something original, if you have an idea in this topic, which isnt that hard to do, i'd be very thankful if you could share it with me! =]

  • this is done using the breve libraries?

  • No, I use my own libraries for the genetic algorithm. I have alose my own representation for the creatures. Breve is only used to display the creatures.

  • The one at 4:13 is cute

  • Was this made in C++?

  • Yes in C++

  • *my text*

  • This is brilliant. I hope you release a version for download. I'd like to see what I can breed on my PC. =)

  • How do you install this on your computer?

  • I program it. I would do a new version soon better I hope.

  • I'm confused... how do you get that to work?

How do you establish the parameters of a universe like that?

  • I use an 3D physical engine and an genetic algorithm. I select for the next generation the creatures travelling the biggest distance.

  • if those blocks did evovle randomly and only the fittest did eveolve futher, it's amazing how they look like some real bugs/worms

  • the strongest survive xD

  • That's great....to bad you didn't stick to the subject you know about. Maybe next time you can talk about the programing instead of making some suggestion of a great sky wizard controlling everything.

  • This shows how life-like solutions can evolve. There's still a programmer, though. :)

  • wow.....you don't even understand what it is your talking about. Evolution is not a theory of origin of life....only origin of species. The programer that you are talking about didn't guide or build the life. The ONLY reason there is a programer is because there is a computer. You could run the same test in your back yard with birds, bumble bees or berry bushes. That of course would take years of testing and observation. And would be practically imposable to control 100%.

  • I've made applications that use genetic algorithms, genetic programming and neural networks, so I do know what I talk about. I don't think you know what you're talking about, though.

  • Actually earthtorob is right. This is a demonstration of natural selection, of course the conditions need to be programmed, but the selection is not. It's random mutation, selection and a stress (ie distance traveled).

This can and is done with out programming as well. Look up heike crab and Peppered moth.

    I'm a programmer too.

  • chodaboy51500, exactly where is earthtorob right and I wrong? You write like his viewpoints are completely exclusive to mine.

  • I may be misreading your original statement but I appears that you are dismissing the results from this application as a proof of concept for the evolutionary process because the application itself had a designer. This is a false assumption.

The application was not programmed to design creatures that can solve problems. It is designed to mimic evolution only. What it produces is emergent and without a designer. This is a proof of concept.

This is a proof of concept.

  • Earthtorob was right about Evolution is not an explanation of abiogenesis, but of species.

That the programmer is only setting the initial conditions and has nothing to do with the outcome. The result is emergent.

And that this can be tested in the real world, which it actually has directly and indirectly.

  • chodaboy51500, I've never disagreed with any of that and I fully agree.

  • what is the program ... can i got it free ?

  • The creatures start with an incapable set of blocks, you see only the best creatures in this video...

  • it might be cool to increase the number of mutations and start with an incapable set of blocks that survive if it's better at propelling itself forward.

  • this is breve? im pretty sure it is. if it is could you please make a tutorial on how to create creatures in breve?

  • I used breve to render the creatures but I have my owm c++ plugging to generate the creatures.

  • Any info on this program?

  • Omg...

  • So cute!

  • dude what the fuck is this program called it fucking rules

  • they are cute

  • This game would be way better than spore.

  • lol, i love watching them skateboad toward the end of the video!! it kinda looks like their actually doing it for fun.

  • OMG, the last one has found out how to jump over the obstacle, the human being is in danger!!!

  • very interesting, i study informatic and i hope play with artificial creature one day.

    Nice nice

  • this stuff is so fascinating, i want to see a super-complex version of this simulation that could form really complex "creatures" besides block creatures

  • Exellent, je ne connaisai pas, voilà quelque chose qui prouve encore une fois que l'évolution est la seule réponse à ce qui vit sur n'importe quelle planète !

  • I like the skating ones, I think they're really cute!

  • yea, the last is "the one"! Great stuff. Just keep them envolving ;)

  • lol it's creepy how this evolution ended in this film ;) few generations later they would pop out of a monitor

  • Haha! The last one saw the matrix! ;) The fastest way to climb is to trick the graphics engine.

Wished I could do that irl :)

  • Yes, it is the proove it is possible de find the matrix :-)

  • what program is this?

  • I use Breve and my own c++ plugins. Breve uses ODE for the physic engine.

  • were can i get it?

  • you took the wrong pill, now ur bitchin in bliss. just kiddin.
