While the religious undertones of the books were toned down A LOT for the film, I still enjoyed The Golden Compass very much. Though I did enjoy Northern Lights (the book version) more than the film adaptation.
Every comment about how the books are loads better than the movie will get a thumbs up from me. They cut so much out, it was a terrible movie, why try to change perfection?

that seen is part of the first book though, because it ends differently than the film. i am guessing they were still planning to use the same ending as in the book when they made the trailer, but then edited it out. shame actually...
Unfortunately I have not yet had the opportunity to read the books, so I can't say anything about the comparison to movie. How ever I wold say that I have always been disappointed, when I have tried to compare a book to the movie. (Harry Potter, Angels and demons etc.) Therefore I have accepted that a book and the following movie is two very different things...and I am very sad that they won't make the sequels to the "The golden compas", because I actually liked the movie... :-)

It's because the second and third books (particularly the third) have some really controversial subjects that I suspect they don't think would take well with the general public, who want meaningless fluff when they go see a movie.

I talked to someone not long ago who used to work for the studio. Apperently a few hundred millions not good enough cause they only doubled their money. So they might never make the other ones seeing that dakota is getting too old now.
i heard they're going to do them. and that dakota hopes its soon, because they're getting too old. i really hope they do continue. i hope, they dont get a new younger cast for it. because it wont be the same.
I didn't like the ending at all, but I've seen what it could have been. That version would have made the movie TEN times better! Instead of your common fade off into the distance ending.

you are so right whslover, i alsi hope that another studio or company picks it up, 1. it could do better bussiness for them, 2. everyone his dark materials fans will also love the movie. and 3. it'll probably be better for all of us. if new line cinema had let phillip pull man to do his version of the movie then it probably would have done better.*my opinion*

the subtle knife will notbe made since it didn't make alot of money. However another studio may pick it up. I hope so. I can't wait to see what happens next. Also there are talks of A series of unfortunate events 2 movie. I hope Nickelodeon doesn't do that one

no, actually several clips in there werent, in fact id even venture to say that most of the preview is made of clips from the movie that werent used. for instance the part where lord asriel was standing next to the glowing thing in the north was where he rips the soul out of the boy roger and creates a path to another world, which by the way WAS THE CLIMAX OF THE BOOK, and never was included in the movie,

that seen is part of the first book though, because it ends differently than the film. i am guessing they were still planning to use the same ending as in the book when they made the trailer, but then edited it out. shame actually...

Unfortunately I have not yet had the opportunity to read the books, so I can't say anything about the comparison to movie. How ever I wold say that I have always been disappointed, when I have tried to compare a book to the movie. (Harry Potter, Angels and demons etc.) Therefore I have accepted that a book and the following movie is two very different things...and I am very sad that they won't make the sequels to the "The golden compas", because I actually liked the movie... :-)

Just saw it IN TELEVISION it didnt even get to cinemas over here, well i was curious about if there is a sequel and after reading a little bit over the internet i understood they arent going to make them, which is a shame, cause my opinion as someone who didnt read the books and just saw the movie that it was rather nice, and i would like to see the sequels

it was suposed to be the in ending of the film. But the preview audience found the ending to difficult to swallow so they messed up the final of the film by cutting the last part of the first book!

It is impossible to make these movies into films.. they screwed the first one.. there is to much information and detail left out.. if you dont read the book then you wont understand the whole point of it.. after watching golden compass and then reading the novel.. I was surprised at how little I understood philip pullmans story

i know all the bits in that that trailer were deleted scenes at the end i thought there were going to be a golden compass 2! why delete them?! and they put them at diferent places like wen she feel of the flying boat she fell of 2 bears found her took her to the the bear palace and took her prisoner and then she met the king and they fought and then lyra stops lord asriel killing rodger i want to know wat happens next!

hey! the last bit lyra fell from the boat! that's not even included IN the film! GRRR! And plus, this is golden compass! It's annoying, i waited and waited for the bit where lyra fell and he yelled 'Lyra' but it never came on! it was probs a deleted scene, coz they missed out a big chunk at the end which should be in the subtle knife movie!

50 of us extras shot 10 days and nights at radcliffe Square, oxford. majestitium police. Our Captain was actor Elliot Cowan. And 4 seconds of these 80 shooting hours were shown.... in the Golden Compass. Anyone have a fking clue whats going on with New Line, the makers?

It's because the second and third books (particularly the third) have some really controversial subjects that I suspect they don't think would take well with the general public, who want meaningless fluff when they go see a movie.

r4f4fst4n1 is right they wont be making subtle knife or amber spyglass. the first film didn't get enough money in America, and they changed the first film too much to fit in the "happy ending" that the second film wouldn't make sense. which is a shame, they had the chance to make a good film of a great story and they messed it up.

i know! that angers me that when i saw the trailer, i was excited to see her fall out of the flying boat thing, but when we went to see it it wasn't even in! So annoying, they missed the last bit out, it's ridiculous, and then subtle knife and amber spyglass oh god oh god, they are sooo good, if only they made them into films.. is it that hard? hey, wait, i remembered, at the beginning of the movie, they have wills world, and a slit, the cam goes through the slit and into lyra's world... hmm. :S

I talked to someone not long ago who used to work for the studio. Apperently a few hundred millions not good enough cause they only doubled their money. So they might never make the other ones seeing that dakota is getting too old now.

I didn't like the ending at all, but I've seen what it could have been. That version would have made the movie TEN times better! Instead of your common fade off into the distance ending.
