Used to watch this show with my Dad. It was great to watch this and other James Garner roles with him. How I've missed him and my Ma. A great show. Thanks for the post.
You know what's funny- James Garner (the man) is still kicking, but when I think about Jim Rockford, the character, I think he's dead. Someone tell me why.
@TheGoldcountry i don't remember how the series ended, but i don't recall hearing that ol' jimbo was killed off. he probably just hooked back up with his lawyer, married her and they lived happily ever after raising chickens on a farm in the mid west. but i could be wrong.
@1skullduggery I'm not talking about the actual series continuity, I'm just thinking that Jim Rockford was destined for a relatively young end. James Garner, on the other hand, I'd like to see him do one or two more movies, if he's willing and able.
remember his buddy, the grifter? angel. hilarious. and rockfish himself. he was pretty good with his dukes, too....lol. and his lawyer who used to be his girl, but now they're just business associates but they both still want to get back together.
These were high quality, highly intelligent shows written for smart adults and above average young people. The whole line up included: Peter Falk (Colombo)
Telly Savalas (Kojak), Robert Blake(Barretta) and James Garner (Rockford).
The scripts were written just for them, to highlight their charm, charisma, and
talent. They were cool, smart ,magnetic but also they were characters with depth and substance, qualities missing in today's leading actors.
@sixsixxsixxxx Nope. It's just a plain fact! Unless you like dorks, geeks, nerds, whimpy leading men (boys) and girls that talk so fast you think they learned to speak from a computer program.
Sorry. Today's crop is just uninteresting, and will be equally unmemorable in television history.
@lavernemariebutler You should be more ignorant, why don't you try generalising some more? You can't say we're uninteresting, I bet you haven't even tried talking to someone of my generation. If you ever feel the need to blame someone for this "uninteresting crop", try remembering who raised us. Also, I think the word you're looking for is learnt, not learned.
@johnsondonger I believe I was very specific in my choice of words. I used the word,
"charisma' which, unfortunately is lacking in a lot of the on-screen (especially television)
talent today. Don't take it personally! It would be very nice to see a newcomer to television that truly brings something dynamic other than a skinny figure, or pretty face. However, a lot of the blame should also go to poor script writers and bad directing. (the word 'learned' is acceptable).

@lavernemariebutler ...very much the result of nerds, whimps, becoming studio heads
directors, etc. very irrelevant, reality-based, throw-away television, quickly getting cancelled, then repeating the process. I will say David Lynch made things interesting in the early 90s, and Chris Carter with the X-files in the late 90s, but lot of unmemorable things.....
@invincibleironman3 very few shows I actually liked for modern day would be Newsradio & Ned and Stacey but that is about it. X-Files was also good along with the newer Star Treks. Never got into reality TV because it sucked. I also liked the LSD inducing seventies such as Sid and Marty Krofft shows. Cheap but unique to watch LOL! Cheers to the classics.
@shaithis80 Cheers to the classics, and i remember H.R. Puff and Stuff, was that LSD inducing, or WHAT!? Next Generation led the way for the eventual Star Trek rebooted film.
@SuperOmnicron I remember the funky opening to Krofft Superstars and the big bang that accompanied that opening eons ago. My personal favs being Wonderbug and Land of the Lost (fyi look up the parody called the Marshalls Season 3 and Electr-O Womand and Dyna Girl/both are funny spoofs:). I never thought Start Trek TNG would go the distance but they pulled it off and did the cast did pay tribute to the original series which was a smart move.
@lavernemariebutler I like your comment regarding today's crop. I find myself just catching up on the older TV shows because as an adult I can relate more to those shows especially plot driven crime fighting shows like Dragnet and Adam-12. Screw the remakes and supposedly what made those shows interesting was that they were based on true stories. I think it just the fact they didn't need digital effects to make it happen. Good acting back then and part of our TV heritage.
@sixsixxsixxxx the quality of TV shows just slowly started to deteriorate. I want to say from then nineties on with very few exceptions to the rule. I don't have any need to have cable TV etc etc because there is just nothing good on. I like the fact that free digital TV offers channels dedicated to running the classics. Real creativity could be seen in the mid-20th century and even beforehand and some of those shows saw a long run in syndication. However everyone's interests are different.
@sixsixxsixxxx also the digital age and the internet has probably become a catalyst and serves as a comeback for some of the older TV shows that apparently have been well preserved. I'm Hollywood has heard of competition. Well perhaps those in charge need to figure out what is going on and come up with somethng more creative or try shooting a new show in black and white and rely less on the effects. Just nothing but good calibre acting.
@shaithis80 ..Would you agree that a return to that genre of character driven, charismatic leading actors will drive former movie actors to television? I noticed Tim Roth on "Lie to Me", and Dustin Hoffman is returning to a television role "Luck" on HBO. I think TV is making a comeback, albiet there are stranger, more intense shows like "Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad"
@SuperOmnicron unfortunately I don't keep up with current trends. I have a analog-digital converter box which receives free signal and that is how I keep up with the classics. I think I'm still stuck in a big 3 er 4 rather show mentality (ABC/CBS/NBC/and sometimes FOX). Though I think I did enjoy an episode of Cold Case many moons back so as with anyone, I channel surf with a limited channel selection and go with what interests me.
@SuperOmnicron I think the key word to any show is plot driven. There will always be an audience that much is certain however I think we are all diverse in our tastes. I'm out of the 18-36 age group and hate to say it have more refined tastes (or like to think I do) when it comes to shows I want to watch like The Munsters (circa 1960's) on DVD. What can I say, Yvonne DeCarlo and Carolyn Jones were just plain hot back in the day.
It was my favorite for sure. Great to see a PI who didn't always come out on top. I loved doing his famous backup turn whenever the chance arose. The guest stars were always great actors and characters and you can count on Angel Martin to sell you out but somehow still end up a friend. I would like to see an episode right now.

@MsODESSAFILE No.But what they didn't have were a lot of racist, backwards-thinking, empty-headed characters, like you.
