I truly wish that there were words to say how amazing this performance is or how deeply it moves me. I am so grateful that, on rare and luminous occasions, such beauty can come into being.
My favorite version of this song was always Karla Bonoff's version. But I never heard this one before. It's absolutlely beautiful. Jewel is so beautiful singing, and the Indigo's are really good too. Sarah is kind-of flowery in what she does- that's good singing for sure, but just doesn't fit with this song. (For what my opinion is worth). But I want to know what Dusty Springfield does with this number...
this song for my sis..the water is wide and deep you cant cross over...but i've been given wings strong enough to carry 2 i love you and am here for you and we will both roam my love (my sis) and I
this song for my sis..the water is wide and deep you cant cross over...but i've been given wings strong enough to carry 2 i love you and am here for you
Jewel starts with a beautiful "spot on" verse The Indigo's demonstrate an incredible tasteful 2 guitar solo (brings back memories of Heart), along with beautiful voice harmonies. Finally, Sarah brings on the "goose bumps" singing the word "deep" in a yodel type leap. We are brought back down as it resolves in lush harmony. An example of great musical structure. I can listen to this over and over.
I was a classical guitar instructor at 2 women's colleges when I was turned on to this. It is one of the most beautiful points in live music in my opinion.
@paulandlesson I wholeheartedly agree. The run Sarah does on her very last note gives me chills every single time. My husband (then boyfriend) and I were at the show at which this was recorded. So, so, so amazing. We went back to Lilith this year and I must say that the vibe was as warm and welcoming as it was back in 1999, despite all the negative press.
I find the comments on this video very interesting.
What, it seems, you don't know, is that this is NOT a James Taylor song. The writer, and artist, who originally released the song is Karla Bonoff. Additionally, the back up harmonies for Karla Bonoff were done by James Taylor.
As for the "integrity" of the versions of this song, Ms. Bonoff is the only one qualified to judge such a thing.
Please yourself with what appeals to you, but speak only for yourself.
@formyrockstar this song is a traditional folk song from the England or Scotland. It has been sung since long before the last century and as such, it belongs to no one.
I like Karla Bonoff's arrangement.
But I like others as well.
As to who can speak in regards to the integrity of any version of this song...
I'm afraid whoever that was has been gone for a very, very, very long time.
@formyrockstar I guess you realize by now, that you could not be more wrong. I prefer Karla's version too, but this song has been around for, probably, centuries. Even the Aussie's claim it.
Truly brilliant harmonies in this wonderful version. This was a group effort in front of an audience; it is inherently more difficult than singing solo. I also like James Taylor's version but for different reasons - it is truer to the original spirit of this as a love ballad.
Personally, I think a beautiful sunrise is better than a beautiful sunset, but what is the point?
Why debate which one is "better"? Enjoy them both.
James Taylor's version of this, which is on YouTube, at least uses the correct chords and also helps us catch the correct melody. He CERTAINLY doesn't sound like he's the one on show and not the song.
You sound like the music police. Conformity and music don't generally go together. Are you a singer/musician/teacher and/or frustrated performer? Why not appreciate artistry instead of criticizing individual interpretation of this song?
1) I never said I dont appreciate artistry. It's just that I recognise James Taylor's artistry as one of a higher order. 2) I never said Im against individual interpretation. Who am I to say such things? I just feel James Taylor's "individual interpretation" is far superior. 3) Who says conformity and music NEVER go together? In fact, the singing in this video is totally CONFORMIST - just playing to the gallery not even willing to experiment to the extent of playing the correct chords!
As always with singers nowadays, they deem themselves more important than the song they're singing.
They think the only way they can demonstrate talent is to sing EVERY NOTE OTHER THAN that which is in the melody (merely singing the melody is considered too boring)
The chord structure has been changed here as well, to no appreciable value-add.
As far as I can tell this is a free country and each person or persons interpretation is different. We're allowed to It's the U.S.A.. That's the freedom we get. So we all can voice our opinion.
Please see my reply to brainsparkles' comment above. I would also add:
While every person is freely entitled, as you rightly said, to a different interpretation, we are all free to judge which person's interpretation is better or superior.
I am pretty sure most musicians worth their salt would say James Taylor's version has oodles more integrity than this - for starters - he at least plays the correct chords!!!!
When Emily smiles, my soul gets warm. She is so damn awesome!! I hope she is doing alright through whatever struggles she is going through lately.
