  • Over actors. They must have been studying with Meryl Streep.

  • 2:34 - 2:38 GETS ME EVERY FUCKING TIME

  • Love this film.

  • It is the Trumpet Scream / Split at 4.41 that does it for me - Fabulous.

  • 小学校のお別れ演奏会でやったなつかしい曲が聴けて感動した。

  • 4 years after this movie was released, Maestro Michael Kamen collaborated Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra releasing the album S&M. That and this movie with one definitive word: EPIC!

  • この映画大好きです。

  • This movie still gets me. Few things make me show emotion but this and kenny g's the moment. Pure emotion and love of life.

  • thumbs up if A) you're a band geek and proud of it; B) you get shivers whenever you watch this movie; and/or C) you still cry at the end of this movie!!

  • love this scene its my favorite out of the whole movie

  • hes holding the baton in the wrong hand......

    other than that....... AMAZING!!!

  • I'm a lefty and conduct left handed. No big deal. Patterns are the same. This is one piece that I REALLY want to either play or conduct.

  • 4:40-4:50 AWESOME way to close the symphony!!!! Goes to a three second pause, and then the drum bass finishes it with a last note! Gives me goosebumps all the time!!! Wonderful movie!!!

  • All of us need to have someone like mr holland in our lives... Great inspiring movie...

  • @Dave14yang when we were in school we had a music teacher who was exactly like this, and we made sure to let him know we were grateful for everything he did for us before we left. he's retired now but we always thank him when we see him!

  • All the times that I've seen this movie, I'm just now realizing that the baton is in his left hand. LOL

No big deal though, I still this movie especially this last part.

  • gaaaaaaaaaa chills every time

  • Mr. Holland is one of those teachers that you need in life. Without him telling you to push your limits even further, you'd get nowhere in life at all.

  • they actually cut out a major part of the music in this scene to make it fit the movie

  • 3:44, the four-eyes realised what an idiot he is for letting this guy go.

  • @TheMaster734 Pricks like him never change. I've worked under many of them. When I saw the movie, I half expected him to get up and say " OK, that's over, everyone back to work."

  • A beautiful piece of music that always leaves a lump in my throat and reduces me to tears. Powerful and uplifting. I love it.

A legacy left by a great composer and musician, Michael Kamen, who is very much missed. RIP.

  • at first i did not really like the piece then I kept listening to it and discovered new joys! :)

  • Where can I get holt of this mp3?

  • @Guderian1939 Go ahead and write then, love.

  • @Guderian1939 Then do it and upload a vid, I'd like to listen.

  • @Guderian1939 mate, unless you are james horner or nobuo uematsu, shut up.

  • amazing...absolutely amazing :) :)

  • I remember seeing little snippits of this movie when I was in elementary! It's amazing how I ever came back to this charming movie <3

  • I Still get chills from this part and i've seen the movie dozens of times!!!

  • If people didn't love music and fought for music, music would not be how it is today in our schools and everywhere. Music is the true expression of how we feel yesterday today and tomorrow. Mr holland is a great movie of the past and is still today.

  • Thumbs up if you think Mr. Holland could've been a Sinfonian! Hail!

  • @pollyadams

I full heartedly agree..I play Flute, Piccolo, Piano, and a little bit of Percussion on the side, but I love music and know one can take me from that...music is something you have to believe in...I hope to someday write my own piece, like Mr. Holland, in the mean time, I just arrange pieces by ear, etc..

  • yeah sorry its fucking awesom! Yanks are dreamers.

  • @Guderian1939 Write something better then you twat.

  • what shit! 30 years for this shite! Fucking yanks are useless.

  • bellissimo...davvero una sinfonia meravigliosa.....

  • Great film, and a really epic song! I like both them!

  • The word is epic. Absolutely EPIC.

  • I played this song my freshman year of high school. I had so much fun playing it. Great song.

  • Yeah, and the this great "symphony" lasts all of 2 minutes.. What a shocking insult to real musicians everywhere. The writers of this movie should be shot.

  • That's not a symphony. It's total trash. Starting with a drumset. Shocking. The worst movie of all time.

  • @organboi Like Mr. Holland said, "This is Music APPRECIATION. I dont see you appreciating any of it". And by definition, it IS a symphony whether you like it or not. by definition, "an elaborate instrumental composition in three or more movements, similar in form to a sonata but written for an orchestra and usually of far grander proportions and more varied elements" I count more than three movements. They may not be perticularly seperated, nor different, but they are movements.

  • Loved it! I definitely gotta watch this movie as one of my first repeat faves, to start off 2011.

  • three of the board members who cut the music program forgot to press the like button...

  • @tbolton haha. NICE.

  • yo, from 3:28 till the end gave me major goosebumps. this movie and song owned

  • I. cried.

  • Such an awesome song!!!

  • @iamunnameable It's not a song. wow. get a music education.

  • @organboi I have a music education. I am in the Volcano Vista High School Vanguard Band, I play three instruments including the trumpet, the guitar, and the piano. So dont say that i dont have a music education. I bet i know more about music than you do. What are YOUR statistics?

  • Gosh, this piece is so amazing ... still get goosebumps after more than ten years ^^;

  • I play the piano and I think this song is amazing, especially between 3:50 to 4:02. This song rocks!!!

  • Thumbs up if you think Richard Dreyfus was snubbed out of an Oscar for his performance as Mr. Holland

  • @BlackHallow55 It wasn't just Richard Dreyfuss, many actors get snubbed by the Academy when it comes to a performance based on an actual person. If you have seen the movie "Miracle" with Kurt Russell you would have to believe he deserved nothing less than a nomination for his performance as Herb Brooks, but yet he gets nothing.

  • i haven't seen this movie in a long time. its amazing how a film can lay dormant in your psyche for so long. and all it takes is one little reminder and you remember why it was so powerful.

  • Great movie, but this has to be one of the worst compositions that I've heard.

  • @daveyj10 you haven't a pulse if you think that composition wasn't good. It may be simplistic but its powerful and inspirational. I STILL tear up when i watch this excerpt BECAUSE of the composition.

  • @GundamZero5745 .. alright, i'll admit that it isn't bad to listen to. In fact it's about as diatonic as it gets (just like Beethoven)... I just felt ... let down, when I heard a drum set and electric guitar in a classical setting... Well written piece, but the 'cheese' factor is a little prevalent.

  • @daveyj10 It's NOT a classical setting though. Not all music is classical, and this is far from a classical piece. Furthermore, it represents the music from each generation of his life, and this is what he writes into his symphony. It makes sense, and it fits extremely well.

  • @TheMusicmanMB By the way, TheMusicmanMB, I totally agree with what you have to say . Main point of this piece is to show the generation he has taught through his life, styles of music. To daveyj10 this symphony is a mixture.

  • this song still gives me chills! so good!

  • such a great performance, such a great movie. this movie reminds me of my high school band director who retired my junior year. we had an alumni concert band for him and i was in the jazz band and we surprised him by playing his all-time favorite jazz tune. he was sooo happy

  • this just maybe the most underrated movie of all time.

  • brilliant movie

  • This is a beautiful movie. Rent it if you can.

  • @newyorkeastside Dude, her name was Rewena Morgan. And if you saw the end of the movie, you would see that Mr. and Mrs. Holland were happy together. Dont criticize a movie that youve never seen.

  • always loved this movie but the events have rung true. Back in 95 when I was still in school we could easily taken arts classes, in fact it was required! I am a college graduate now, and when I went back to work at my own high school all the arts were cut. That & also there only seems to be a handful of teachers per school that make or care enough to make a difference in a student life. "You can cut the arts as much as you want, sooner or later these kids wont have anything to read/write about"

  • @tms117 Amen to that. It's a shame. If nothing else, it's proven that the arts can help kids in other subjects. I'll never understand the decision to cut back, or get rid of these programs all together.

  • @kamwrites I agree totaly. I SUCKED at math, but i enroled in my middle school band and went from a C average in Math to an A- average by the end of mid-school. I'm a freshman in high school and im still going strong. Only my absences due to an extensive hospital visit brought them down to a D again.

  • The horns from 3:10-3:20. YES!!!!

  • @Dgetz08 and from 4:19 to 4:26 :) *goosebumps*

  • I love teachers *sigh*. I think we've all had a "Mr. Holland" as some point in our educational lives....

  • @crysta2k2 or we all WISH we had had that!!

  • @mysterious1961 True. LOL

  • @crysta2k2 ...Mine was my mid-school band teacher named Mr. Sivertson. He was a tough nut to crack, but once you became a good and friendly student, he was a teddy bear.

  • I love this.

  • A great 1995 movie.

  • One of the most moving films Iv seen.

  • Why would 3 people dislike this? Thumbs up if you dislike the dislikers!

  • Wow, he holds the baton in the left hand....not common, but not hard.

  • @bandpickle2000 Richard Dreyfus is left handed so i dont really think its that hard for him.

  • The best last scene of a movie ever!

  • This is a great song...the best in the movie <3

  • amazing music love the movie love Mr. Holland.

amazing director the movements of his arms and the flow of the music the french horn part is awsome!!!<3

  • I listen to this song everyday on my ipod. It's wonderful!

  • only movie to bring a tear to my eye

god bless music and the good people who serve it

  • What a wicked part of the movie...I was crying the entire time....it was so emotional.

  • my favorite part is when they strike up the guitars...so dramatic

  • this is shit!

  • @Guderian1939 Finally, someone who speaks the truth.

  • does anyone know the original name for this song? I know its by Michael Kamen, but whats the title of it.

  • @Southsunstuba An American Symphony. Just found it on iTunes

  • I love this movie! Its my favourite, wonderful song, i love it!

  • Ive seen this movie 5 times and I cry every time,Richard Dreyfess is an absolute gift from God!!!

  • im a grown man and when i watch this movie(the whole thing) i get a little teary eyed.

  • As much as I love An American Symphony, I just love the emotion that Richard Dreyfuss shows in this scene. It's amazing how much Mr. Holland has affected the lives of these kids, but I think it's the most amazing thing because I think Mr. Holland has also finally realized how much of an impact these kids have has on his life and how much he loves teaching. I think it's really a beautiful moment and Richard Dreyfuss is just amazing in this scene.

  • i want the trombone part to this omg soooo epic

  • @srorasco1 I want the Trumpet and guitar versons. Hey, wanna be friends?

  • this is my favorite part of the movie

  • This movie is so adorable. Love it

  • Im watching that movie right now. Emotional

  • I cried at the end of this movie......

  • I would love to believe he didn't spend 30 years writing this....but what is meant by his wife and son having spent 30 years...is for Mr. Holland to have this moment, where he plays his music in front of amused audience...a moment for which he lived his life...where his life became complete....its a great movie...and in some cases its better to enjoy the emotional flow in the heart that to figure out what is right or wrong...

  • @somaditya75 It's possible he could have taken those thirty years. There were several moments in the movie when Mr. Holland references "When do I have time to write MY music???" He was also working on the music for the musical among other things. Perhaps it just kept getting put off.

  • luv that movie it was the perfect ending that no one expected :)

  • If any one wants the sheet music to this, contact me, reply. I found it for every instrument used. Im not lying.

  • @Diabolic845 I really want the sheet music to American Symphony, could I get it?

  • sure, what instrument?

  • @Talesoffan1 Whts your email address?

  • hey do you have trumpet music?

  • Yes i do, if you want to, send me your email, if its ok with you.

  • @Diabolic845 Send me a copy too? addrenalinejunkieone@yahoo.com. Feel free to send whenever you get the time. :)

  • @iamunnameable hey dude, my channel got taken down, Diabolic845. this is the same person speaking to you, i lost the site, but i will try to find it again. srry for any inconveniences this may have caused.

  • @DiabolicProductions2 lol, just found it. ill be sending it in a while.

  • have it 4 Trombone????

  • Yup, 3 differnt parts. i will pm it you, i just need yer email.

  • My top 3 favorite movies are:

    Godfather I

    Godfather II

    Shawshank Redemtion

And... was moved by this ending!

  • music is the only thing that can get me at this level of happiness and pleasure. i love it it is such a wonderful feeling, i just wish i had the money to get my own instruments and play along with the music so i can feel a part of it all

  • It's not a Michael Kamen arrangement he's the composer of the piece. Only he could write something like this. Amazing!

  • I love this part!!! I live for music!!!

  • @singingal17 I also live for music. Wanna be friends?

  • thats hilarious i noticed this also

    but i love this movie

  • Does anyone else find it amusing that the symphony that he's spent all his working life writing is less than three minutes long?

  • good point but there is so much to keep in mind when writing a score, plus as a band director you don;t have a lot of spare time to do stuff like that.

  • this also isn't the full song, the full thing is about 6-8 minutes long. i have the music for it, i would know.

  • @Diabolic845 Send me a copy? Do you have the full score? I want to be able to show this to the conductors of the symphony's that i play in. I always thought it would be fun to try... my email address is addrenalinejunkieone@yaoo.com

  • dunebasher1871:

Actually, it's a a lot longer - they cut it short for the movie. On the movie soundtrack, the final piece "Mr. Hollands Opus" is over 8 minutes long. This is just a small piece of it.

On a side note: writing a full orchestra score while having a full time job? Takes a lot of time - even moreso if you do it by hand like he does in the movie. It's a tremendous amount of work, I tell you ^^

  • Tell me about it. I was a music major in college and had to compose music for only one instrument, but then had to transpose it for other instruments...Thankfully I only had to transpose it for two other instruments, not a full orchestra!

  • @0Samaire0 I believe it.

  • @dunebasher1971 It's not only amusing. it's atrocious.

  • Although I don't expect anyone to agree with me (or, for that matter, enjoy this comment), this sounds more like theme music for a Kevin Costner movie than something in and of itself.

  • is this song actually available as sheet music for a symphony or concert band?

  • i believe it is. you can probably find it through google.

  • Yes! Michael Kamen wrote an arrangement for Concert Band, we just played it at my University. I'm sure it can be found somewhere online.

  • But, even if you are left handed you still conduct with your right hand.

  • FYI: The actor who plays Mr. Holland (Richard Dreyfuss) is indeed left handed in real life.

  • It feels good to be a lefty

  • Ever thought that the actor was left handed?...It doesn't matter which hand is which. Jeesh...get a life!?

  • His baton is in the wrong hand you conduct with the baton in your right hand and cue with the left he was doing it backwards well done but backwards.

  • Is it written in stone that you have to conduct with your right hand? Is it law for all conductors? No jerk.

  • I have watch this movie many time and it can be done using the left hand but it is just not standard. I wasn't trying to be a jerk. Just making an obervation.

  • actually, as a classical musician myself, it's highly common (as well as strongly suggested) that a conductor uses their right hand to conduct....so it may as well be written in stone, cuz it's rarely (if ever) done.

  • I know its not written in stone i just noticed it because i am currently in a beginning conducting class.

  • I don't think it matters nearly as much as the emotion of the scene. It is the sheer power of this teacher who is at the end of his career and realizes just what an impact he made to all of those students. I think that's far more important than how he conducted, luxaurum.

  • @PeachWookiee

True, I totally agree. Just to add on, I'd say that all relationships are two-way. Just as he realizes in this signature moment how powerful his influence has been and the mark he has made, he also fully realizes just how much influence they've had and the mark they've made in his life. For me, it's during the conducting, and in the emotion moments before and after, that Mr. Holland glimpses part of the inestimable value of what has been both given by, and given to him.

    So cool.

  • Gives me goosebumps every time!!

  • Same here!

  • and I say AGAIN cause I say it every time I see this clip, no matter who is posting it. I LOVE this movie. This scene is Richard's best performance, hands down. The emotion he puts into this is indescribable. I wish I could tell him how much I appreciate it.

  • this song is soo beautiful. I dont think you can not listen to it and not get chills. amazing!

  • One of the best movies ever!!! It will surely make you cry...

  • yes it did

  • where is part 13 with sound?

  • Yes, because Mr. Holland's son is deaf and also cannot speak. This happened at birth. His son's name is Cole.

  • His son was born deaf. That was one of the main themes of the movie-- their relationship was strained because he didn't think he would be able to share the most important thing in his life, his music, with his son. He was bitter and angry and almost expecting him to just change or get better, until he had to learn to accept his son the way he was, and find a way to change himself and his music instead.

  • his son was not born deaf, you should go watch the movie

  • Mr.Holland's son is deff

  • Actually, that is a relative new thing. I was at a performance of music by Edgar Varese 2 weeks ago and they had signers as wel..

  • i watched this in my english class and this is my favorite scene

  • I think if it had additional ensemble, it would add more richness and depth. Just a note. :)
