@Dave14yang when we were in school we had a music teacher who was exactly like this, and we made sure to let him know we were grateful for everything he did for us before we left. he's retired now but we always thank him when we see him!
Mr. Holland is one of those teachers that you need in life. Without him telling you to push your limits even further, you'd get nowhere in life at all.
@TheMaster734 Pricks like him never change. I've worked under many of them. When I saw the movie, I half expected him to get up and say " OK, that's over, everyone back to work."
If people didn't love music and fought for music, music would not be how it is today in our schools and everywhere. Music is the true expression of how we feel yesterday today and tomorrow. Mr holland is a great movie of the past and is still today.
I full heartedly agree..I play Flute, Piccolo, Piano, and a little bit of Percussion on the side, but I love music and know one can take me from that...music is something you have to believe in...I hope to someday write my own piece, like Mr. Holland, in the mean time, I just arrange pieces by ear, etc..
Yeah, and the this great "symphony" lasts all of 2 minutes.. What a shocking insult to real musicians everywhere. The writers of this movie should be shot.
@organboi Like Mr. Holland said, "This is Music APPRECIATION. I dont see you appreciating any of it". And by definition, it IS a symphony whether you like it or not. by definition, "an elaborate instrumental composition in three or more movements, similar in form to a sonata but written for an orchestra and usually of far grander proportions and more varied elements" I count more than three movements. They may not be perticularly seperated, nor different, but they are movements.
@organboi I have a music education. I am in the Volcano Vista High School Vanguard Band, I play three instruments including the trumpet, the guitar, and the piano. So dont say that i dont have a music education. I bet i know more about music than you do. What are YOUR statistics?
@BlackHallow55 It wasn't just Richard Dreyfuss, many actors get snubbed by the Academy when it comes to a performance based on an actual person. If you have seen the movie "Miracle" with Kurt Russell you would have to believe he deserved nothing less than a nomination for his performance as Herb Brooks, but yet he gets nothing.

@daveyj10 you haven't a pulse if you think that composition wasn't good. It may be simplistic but its powerful and inspirational. I STILL tear up when i watch this excerpt BECAUSE of the composition.
@GundamZero5745 .. alright, i'll admit that it isn't bad to listen to. In fact it's about as diatonic as it gets (just like Beethoven)... I just felt ... let down, when I heard a drum set and electric guitar in a classical setting... Well written piece, but the 'cheese' factor is a little prevalent.
@daveyj10 It's NOT a classical setting though. Not all music is classical, and this is far from a classical piece. Furthermore, it represents the music from each generation of his life, and this is what he writes into his symphony. It makes sense, and it fits extremely well.
@TheMusicmanMB By the way, TheMusicmanMB, I totally agree with what you have to say . Main point of this piece is to show the generation he has taught through his life, styles of music. To daveyj10 this symphony is a mixture.

such a great performance, such a great movie. this movie reminds me of my high school band director who retired my junior year. we had an alumni concert band for him and i was in the jazz band and we surprised him by playing his all-time favorite jazz tune. he was sooo happy
Mr Holland spent the rest of his life regretting that he did not go to New York with her. He spent the next twenty years having sex with his wife with his eyes closed and thought about Arlena every night while breaking off his boring needy wife. Instead he stayed with his wife and never wrote music and died a slow lonely death.
@newyorkeastside Dude, her name was Rewena Morgan. And if you saw the end of the movie, you would see that Mr. and Mrs. Holland were happy together. Dont criticize a movie that youve never seen.
always loved this movie but the events have rung true. Back in 95 when I was still in school we could easily taken arts classes, in fact it was required! I am a college graduate now, and when I went back to work at my own high school all the arts were cut. That & also there only seems to be a handful of teachers per school that make or care enough to make a difference in a student life. "You can cut the arts as much as you want, sooner or later these kids wont have anything to read/write about"
@tms117 Amen to that. It's a shame. If nothing else, it's proven that the arts can help kids in other subjects. I'll never understand the decision to cut back, or get rid of these programs all together.
@kamwrites I agree totaly. I SUCKED at math, but i enroled in my middle school band and went from a C average in Math to an A- average by the end of mid-school. I'm a freshman in high school and im still going strong. Only my absences due to an extensive hospital visit brought them down to a D again.
@crysta2k2 ...Mine was my mid-school band teacher named Mr. Sivertson. He was a tough nut to crack, but once you became a good and friendly student, he was a teddy bear.
As much as I love An American Symphony, I just love the emotion that Richard Dreyfuss shows in this scene. It's amazing how much Mr. Holland has affected the lives of these kids, but I think it's the most amazing thing because I think Mr. Holland has also finally realized how much of an impact these kids have has on his life and how much he loves teaching. I think it's really a beautiful moment and Richard Dreyfuss is just amazing in this scene.
I would love to believe he didn't spend 30 years writing this....but what is meant by his wife and son having spent 30 years...is for Mr. Holland to have this moment, where he plays his music in front of amused audience...a moment for which he lived his life...where his life became complete....its a great movie...and in some cases its better to enjoy the emotional flow in the heart that to figure out what is right or wrong...
@somaditya75 It's possible he could have taken those thirty years. There were several moments in the movie when Mr. Holland references "When do I have time to write MY music???" He was also working on the music for the musical among other things. Perhaps it just kept getting put off.
@iamunnameable hey dude, my channel got taken down, Diabolic845. this is the same person speaking to you, i lost the site, but i will try to find it again. srry for any inconveniences this may have caused.
music is the only thing that can get me at this level of happiness and pleasure. i love it it is such a wonderful feeling, i just wish i had the money to get my own instruments and play along with the music so i can feel a part of it all
good point but there is so much to keep in mind when writing a score, plus as a band director you don;t have a lot of spare time to do stuff like that.
@Diabolic845 Send me a copy? Do you have the full score? I want to be able to show this to the conductors of the symphony's that i play in. I always thought it would be fun to try... my email address is addrenalinejunkieone@yaoo.com
Actually, it's a a lot longer - they cut it short for the movie. On the movie soundtrack, the final piece "Mr. Hollands Opus" is over 8 minutes long. This is just a small piece of it.
On a side note: writing a full orchestra score while having a full time job? Takes a lot of time - even moreso if you do it by hand like he does in the movie. It's a tremendous amount of work, I tell you ^^
Tell me about it. I was a music major in college and had to compose music for only one instrument, but then had to transpose it for other instruments...Thankfully I only had to transpose it for two other instruments, not a full orchestra!
Although I don't expect anyone to agree with me (or, for that matter, enjoy this comment), this sounds more like theme music for a Kevin Costner movie than something in and of itself.
I have watch this movie many time and it can be done using the left hand but it is just not standard. I wasn't trying to be a jerk. Just making an obervation.
actually, as a classical musician myself, it's highly common (as well as strongly suggested) that a conductor uses their right hand to conduct....so it may as well be written in stone, cuz it's rarely (if ever) done.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm surprised none of younoticed that he's conducting in four-four time but the piece is written six eights time, which is conducted in duple (up down) not down-left-right up as "common time" is....RIchard Dreyfuss is a musician in real life and I'm surprised he made this mistake....
I don't think it matters nearly as much as the emotion of the scene. It is the sheer power of this teacher who is at the end of his career and realizes just what an impact he made to all of those students. I think that's far more important than how he conducted, luxaurum.
True, I totally agree. Just to add on, I'd say that all relationships are two-way. Just as he realizes in this signature moment how powerful his influence has been and the mark he has made, he also fully realizes just how much influence they've had and the mark they've made in his life. For me, it's during the conducting, and in the emotion moments before and after, that Mr. Holland glimpses part of the inestimable value of what has been both given by, and given to him.
and I say AGAIN cause I say it every time I see this clip, no matter who is posting it. I LOVE this movie. This scene is Richard's best performance, hands down. The emotion he puts into this is indescribable. I wish I could tell him how much I appreciate it.
His son was born deaf. That was one of the main themes of the movie-- their relationship was strained because he didn't think he would be able to share the most important thing in his life, his music, with his son. He was bitter and angry and almost expecting him to just change or get better, until he had to learn to accept his son the way he was, and find a way to change himself and his music instead.
Over actors. They must have been studying with Meryl Streep.

good point but there is so much to keep in mind when writing a score, plus as a band director you don;t have a lot of spare time to do stuff like that.
rockoutforever14 2 years ago
this also isn't the full song, the full thing is about 6-8 minutes long. i have the music for it, i would know.
Diabolic845 2 years ago

@0Samaire0 I believe it.

@dunebasher1971 It's not only amusing. it's atrocious.

Although I don't expect anyone to agree with me (or, for that matter, enjoy this comment), this sounds more like theme music for a Kevin Costner movie than something in and of itself.

is this song actually available as sheet music for a symphony or concert band?
drummerblade 2 years ago
i believe it is. you can probably find it through google.

Yes! Michael Kamen wrote an arrangement for Concert Band, we just played it at my University. I'm sure it can be found somewhere online.

But, even if you are left handed you still conduct with your right hand.
ajkb1988 2 years ago
FYI: The actor who plays Mr. Holland (Richard Dreyfuss) is indeed left handed in real life.

It feels good to be a lefty

Ever thought that the actor was left handed?...It doesn't matter which hand is which. Jeesh...get a life!?
violinboy345 2 years ago 3
His baton is in the wrong hand you conduct with the baton in your right hand and cue with the left he was doing it backwards well done but backwards.
ajkb1988 2 years ago
Is it written in stone that you have to conduct with your right hand? Is it law for all conductors? No jerk.
ViciousTeddyBear09 2 years ago
I have watch this movie many time and it can be done using the left hand but it is just not standard. I wasn't trying to be a jerk. Just making an obervation.
ajkb1988 2 years ago
actually, as a classical musician myself, it's highly common (as well as strongly suggested) that a conductor uses their right hand to conduct....so it may as well be written in stone, cuz it's rarely (if ever) done.
RhapsodicGunther 2 years ago
I know its not written in stone i just noticed it because i am currently in a beginning conducting class.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I'm surprised none of younoticed that he's conducting in four-four time but the piece is written six eights time, which is conducted in duple (up down) not down-left-right up as "common time" is....RIchard Dreyfuss is a musician in real life and I'm surprised he made this mistake....

I don't think it matters nearly as much as the emotion of the scene. It is the sheer power of this teacher who is at the end of his career and realizes just what an impact he made to all of those students. I think that's far more important than how he conducted, luxaurum.

@PeachWookiee
So cool.

and I say AGAIN cause I say it every time I see this clip, no matter who is posting it. I LOVE this movie. This scene is Richard's best performance, hands down. The emotion he puts into this is indescribable. I wish I could tell him how much I appreciate it.

where is part 13 with sound?
babw12 2 years ago
Yes, because Mr. Holland's son is deaf and also cannot speak. This happened at birth. His son's name is Cole.
cherokeeslady 2 years ago
His son was born deaf. That was one of the main themes of the movie-- their relationship was strained because he didn't think he would be able to share the most important thing in his life, his music, with his son. He was bitter and angry and almost expecting him to just change or get better, until he had to learn to accept his son the way he was, and find a way to change himself and his music instead.
marikology 2 years ago
his son was not born deaf, you should go watch the movie

I think if it had additional ensemble, it would add more richness and depth. Just a note. :)
