I HAVE ALWAYS HAVE THE FEELING THAT YOU WERE INSPIRED BY SOME MOVIE LIKE KING ARTHUR OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT WHEN YOU GUYS WROTTE THIS PART IN PARTICULAR, IS IT TRUE OR WAS IT SOMETHING ELSE?....
Where you will hear the Zappa influence on this song is more like "St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast", "Alien Orifice" or maybe even "Sinister Footwear Mvt. II". Zappa was a great man and an amazing musician...may his memory live on in the great music of Dream Theater. He gave Steve Vai his first job as "stunt guitarist".
To answer your question, yes he is referring to the greatest rock composer of the last 100 years (in my opinion) Frank Zappa. You should definitely familiarize yourself with some of his greater works that influence songs like Dream Theaters. Suicide Letter was inspired by "Easy Meat" instrumental section. Tommy Mars was his keys player and the best...Mike refers Jordan to Tommy's playing for inspiration as noted on Live Scenes From New York DVD Commentary.
My suggestion to you would be to listen to "Lather". I believe you will hear "St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast" and "The Black Page #1".... "200 Motels" is another great album. "Sheik Yerbouti" is a good one. Of course we can't forget "Baby Snakes". Listen to the song on Youtube "City of Tiny Lights" (it will change your thoughts about a lot musically)...also "Strictly Genteel". My Zappa tastes are very dispensed over his whole career.
Myung perhaps plays rhythm while Petrucci plays lead (with the octave pedal for that duo-harmonized effect). Improvisation is hard with only one guitar.
Count of Tuscany is so freaking BEAUTIFUL!!!! T_T
I hope you guys play it when you come to Stuttgart in February.

I KNEW that was a Zappa influenced part! I actually referred to that part as the "Zappa lick" from the first time I heard it.

Is the "zappa" reffering to Frank Zappa here? I have thought of this part as the "Saga" part, but not so familiar with Zappa stuff.
Sounds great in either or any other case.

Thanks for the reply. Can you recommend some essential Zappa albums? There are quite a lot of them.

Great!
Tell me one thing though, how are you plannig on solving the intro for this song as the guitar plays both rythm and lead?

like they always do, jordan will take the rhythm with probably a piano patch or a close to clean guitar simulator,
i dont no im a guitarist haha
