People who write books that get banned get them banned because other people think they're wrong when it is the other way around.
I do not think that anyone should have the right to tell us what we can or cannot read. What about Catcher in the Rye? I read it in the 7th grade and I owned a copy of Scary Stories. Perhaps the issue is not the language, but the homosexuality and different religious beliefs that are expressed in these books? There is more sex on TV then there are in these books and you can easily not purchase it if you don't want to read it but, that should be our choice, not someone else deciding for me.
well I guess we have to ban the bible too because king david commited adultry, even though it was only reported to teach people not to be stealing somebodys mate. Hey religious nut jobs, context is either important or it's not, make up your mind.
You know I actually don't know where all this hate is coming from...some of these books are actually..believe it or not..not appropriate for children! The thing with the Tango book is it's not anti-family...but it is exposing kids to homosexuality a little too early. Maybe when they are in like, third grade. Not when they are three.

Apparently now homosexuality is a legitimate reason to ban a book? Just beacause there are gay characters, it doesn't mean there has to be remotely explicit material in it.

My gosh. This is stupid really. I mean. We learn about sex at 12+ (Sex Ed and all that) also kids are learning of curse words at a younger age.
Banned books makes one want to read them. This is sad and stupid. Look, they tried to ban Harry Potter due to overly religous people only seeing witchcraft. Also have you seen the cartoons nowadays? Back in the 90's it was good, now I ask 'what the heck is this world coming to?'
I'm sure people in the middle east would give anything to be an American at the moment, yet the religious nutters in America seem to do whatever they can to become a theocracy like those countries in the middle east.
You don't learn about life by reading books like "Maisy Goes to Kindergarten" and "Hannah Montana Rides a Horse." Those teach you your colors and numbers but they don't teach you about life and love and loss, and how people get hurt and get built up, and move along.
To everyone who bans books: Thank you. Your intolerance inspires me to read the very books you disapprove of.
That they take them time to read all that shit. I don't necessarily agree with gay or occult themes but eum there must be some gay or occult readers out there ahah.
the people who ban this shit dont like gay folk. scary stories book fuckin rocked my childhood. that book was awesome. what fucking age group ? 1 through 100 ?. the asswipes who are up for banning books should be required by career choice to wear nazi uniforms by practice. doctors wear white. banners wear nazi uniforms
The Best Girly Books Are: The Princess Diaries (Series) Let's Talk About Me! I am very conservative, but I do believe in our freedoms as Americans. Banning books is not the way to go, we rate games, T.V shows and movies, so why no books? it also looks to me like many of these are parent who can't control what their children read. :-/
Censorship, what a drag as a banned author I feel the pain of censorship acutely both by books aimed young adults: It's OK to despise gays and Superiority is not shameful (a guidebook for blue eyed teens) have been banned from all but a few libraries, it's appalling.
for gods sake they are just books i think ppl should stop been asses and stop bannin books what they shoudl bann are the stupid cartoons from nick disney and cartoon network where all they do is say and do stupid stuff like burp fart act stupid and do stupdi stuff they shoudl leave that fro 18+ not 7y up i see my lil brother watch them toons and its like wtf and then he repeats the same things from tv so wtf is wrong with books american families have been blinded by the goverment with dumb shit
so I found this awsome story on this site and its so fucking hot! It has mystery/romance/fantasy and the romance is soo fucking hot! U gotta check it out fictionesque. c o m Its called Loving Demons and Dying Angels by kateyxxxx or deathangel. The books is soo fucking hottt. the writer says that they are a psychopath. this won't let me post the fucking link but u should search it up if u love romance/mystery/fantasy!!!!
why are most of them challenged becuz of homosexuality cant we just except the way someone is jeez why do ppl get so freaked out when something like this happens
I don't understand these antagonists. Don't they realise that opposing people's right to read these books makes them want to read them more? I want to read these now. It seems these groups are mixing the words interesting and controversial.
It is truly a sad day in America when a book can be banned or challenged for having supposed "homosexual" themes. These special interest groups that pull this crap make me sick.
My mom and stepdad wanted to get Cliff Notes banned from students and have "mere possession" when enrolled as a student a "criminal offense"! My mom even told my high school English teacher that I was "cheating" with Cliff Notes. The teacher asked "how so?" My mom's response: "because he [me] has a copy!" The teacher informed her that what cheating was and that I was not cheating and that she [teacher] herself had a copy and knows when students are "cheating". My mom was pissed!
Perhaps a book can be "banned from the **curriculum"--ESPECIALLY for private school--for public school (curriculum)--and perhaps even prohibited from bringing to school (if it causes disruption; or illegal for age (e.g. even not allowing 18-year-old high school students to bring, say, pornography to their high school campus, since minors attend there)---but **anything** can be challenged, up to the Supreme Court, right? So it would depend on the "type" and "extent" of the banning, right?
oh and another thing, why are teens treated like 3 year olds? seriously people! we use offensive language on a daily basis and we discuss sexual things and joke about it, some people my age are HAVING sex. come on! unsuited for age group? this is stupid. i hate people.
oh and what are our scary stories supposed to be? along the lines of casper the friendly ghost? jesus!
Haha! Yessss the Scary Stories Series! Those books scared the crap out of me when I was little (and still today) the illustrations in those books are honestly disturbing if you haven't seen check them out.....soooo macabre!
And how about that book "Sixth Grade Secrets" haha back in elementary school my friends would read that book, it was like "OMG GIRLS!!" to us.
not "perks of being a wallflower"!!! that's one of my all time favorite books! i think i would go into a morbid depression if it was banned from my library... and "scary stories"? really? i read that in the sixth grade. i don't think i'm going to turn to satanism or anything... "the earth my butt and other round things" isn't that offensive... it's real, is all. and it's a young adult novel! people should just lay off of teenagers for once. (same goes for "alice" and "gossip girl".)
woah!! I was just about to ask about the music when I reched the end. It's just the most climatic music I've ever heard. I'll make sure to imagine that music while I read one of the books trying to be banned here in Puerto Rico(senadors just dont know ho to make laws anymore)!!!
just cause the christians don't like it and dont want christian kids/teens to read it doesn't mean they have to spoil it for everyone else! bastards!! how dare they spoil it for anybody else!!
saw this at skool today. i hate the people who censor these books for racism and sexism. censoring racism not only makes people ignorant but people will use the word "nigger" for example not knowing that its a very racist word and maybe get shot. but then again, humans are overpopulating anyways!
Freedom to read! Keep reading those books while you still can. dont let the fundamentalists get to you!
These days hardly anyone reads. people believe everything is on youtube or on television... if anyone picks up a book people should applause no matter what it is... soon we will all be babbling idiots who can count how many books we have read on one hand so read up people.
When will people learn that sex is part of life and that it's ridiculous to ban it from books.
It's all these weird parents!
"I don't want my child to be reading any book that has the word sex in it! He must not know anything about sex or that there is such a thing until he is forty!"
Banning books encourages people to read it. People want what they can't have!
That is, so far, the best comment i have ever seen! nicely put. the thing is, the government of the US likes to punish. its like the mean dad, and wants to take stuff away. ever have your parents take shit away from you when your using it? that doesnt do shit. it just pisses you off. right? Fundamentalism does not understand and decides to just keep going how it is. maybe if they were just hella nice, maybe they would get more from it. i wish religion would just gtfo! Fuck fundamentalists!! read
Kaffir boy is the one that really pissed me off. a man who experienced such hardships should not get his book banned. it is sooo fuckin retarded. yes, it included rape, violence, murder, drugs, etc., but how is any one going to learn about how horrible those things are if they dont read?
seriously? those things are facts of life (not that religion has anything to do with facts)
my favorite pt. that was made was that banning encourages people to read. people dont know that tho!
What does "anti-family" mean? XD;;; That gay penguin family looked about as family as it gets.
And Scary Stories? Seriously? That was like my favorite book when I was a kid. How are you supposed to have scary stories without a little scary content? It's not Stephen King, people, it's a couple ghosts and a big rat or something.
@GuacamoleKun I'll tell you what it means--read the book of leviticus in GOD'S holy word the bible--it says no woman or man ought to be lying in sex with those of their same sex---thaty's anti-family to be gay or at least to be as God wants us to be. I'm just letting you know what it probably was meaning when it said that---not my words--don't say I said it-----it was GOD himself who said it plain and simple!
@micmoable Well that's what YOUR religion says, so you can choose not to let YOUR kid read that book, but it doesn't seem very appropriate for people to try and get the book banned for everyone, since a lot of people have other beliefs.
Good question for you. Why the fuck should I let what you believe effect what I read or watch? seriously!? I think the bible should be banned for inciting wars throughout the centuries and being the #1 cause the middle east is in a constant state of war. You can choose to NOT read those books, you can choose to NOT let your kids read them, You can choose to NOT let your school make your kids read them, but fuck off if I'll let your uptight ass choose my media.
@GuacamoleKun It is talking about traditional families--being gay is definitely not for the family as most folks see it or the kind the bible says we ought to have--read the book of LEVITACUS in the BIBLE and see for yourself
While I may not agree with homosexual themes or explicit sexual stories for children the right to free speech is just that, free speech.
If you don't like those books, write to the publisher and tell them you don't want to read books like that. Don't buy the book to support what you don't believe in, and hey, don't read it, but banning it is unconstitutional. Banning one leads to banning them all
hell! if a person doesn't like a book, they should have the freedom to not read it! this whole fuckin shit is fucked up and its fuckin pissing me the fuck off! FUCK! Thats freedom of speech there! Lets hope the christians don take this away too! i hate christians!
I'm a christian and i don't have a problem with any of these books. neither do my parents and they are christian too. you are judging all christians just because of some christians doing something stupid like banning books.
sry... i kinda get carried away sometimes when im pissed off. i was referring to FUNDAMENTALIST christians. i don't like those. u and ur family are the more passive type. maybe skipping a day of church or not even going to church at all. those are the christians i have no problem with whatsoever. its the others that get on my nerves. the more radical types who come to my door asking if i want to "BUY FREE religion" which is a contradiction to itself, those are the ones that really tick me off.
Reading is one of the greatest treasures of life itself. In no way is it brainwashing, when its purely a decision to read or not to read.
The sole purpose of mind control is to focus on a general track of thought. Books go in all directions! To use mind control in books would be much like trying to use a five lane highway as a one lane intersection, impossible and unintelligent in attempting.

A while back I decided that people shouldn't read books anymore due to the fact that I have determined the activity to be a form of mind control. I mean, think about it. Staring at other people's words strung together in clearly incoherent patterns for hours on end. It's just propaganda for another person's perspective on life. That's how religions are formed. It's clearly dangerous and definitely subversive.
I'm completely against banning books. Our first amendment guaranteed our freedom of expression, which includes writing and reading "obscene" books. I'm always reading banned books. I've read The Perks of Being a Wallflower (awesome book), and another book not included on the list, American Psycho.
Scary stories: the complete collection? wtf??? I bought that book in a fuckin normal bookstore... And it´s not scary at all, but I like it :D
PS. Sexual themes??? they should read: the cellar from richard laymon... in that book, evrybody/thing is havin sex, dudes, chicks, grannys with monsters.... But I hate that book because kids get raped... they should get that out of the store, and not scary stories!!!
i met the author for The Earth, my Butt, and Other Big Round Things. i agree with you OIFTube, not being allowed to read a book or having a book challenged is shit. it also goes against the first Amendment in the American constitution, so i don't see why banning a book is legal
I hate how some of these were challenged for 'homosexuality'.
Quite frankly I just have to ask the opposed... What's wrong with two men being in love? Espcially if it's in a book, you don't have to accept it, but don't teach our children to be as hateful as yourselves.
you're right! Ding Ding Ding! book banning is against the American constitution
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I don't care for books banned for sexuality and all that crap, there's porno websites for these purposes, but why should they ban a book in the 1st place? is this the freedom they always brag about??
U dont like it u put it down u dont keep reading get offended and go through all the procedures to get your fascist opinion oppressed on every one else
None of my favorites or inspirations were taught in school. I had to figure that one out" for myself.
There's a Norwegian writer Jens Bjorneboe. His writings alone introudeced me to a world of litertuare that schoolkids or students was never introduced to by hteir teachers.
Writing is a vice like anything else. You can tell the Truth, or you can lie your teeth out.
In a Fundamentalist Christian Universe: father says "I love my son." He is persecuted for being homosexual and anti-family.
In a rational universe: father says "I love my son." People emulate him and try to build closer relationships with their children minus the indoctrination.
See the difference?
(Note, some Christians are on the brink of evolution to more rational beings, like myself. It is our duty as humans and freedom lovers to help them to see the light like others before them.)
It's more a cultural thing than it is a christian thing- in our culture, guys just don't show affection to each other- maybe out of insecurity in their masculinity? :P However, in biblical times, a guy saying he loved his son was perfectly fine. In Genesis, Abraham was not at all afraid to admit he loved his sons. It's a culture thing. :P
Humans. People like this (Ones who challeneged.) Think they have the right to say whether its right or wrong for people to write their own books, or for what people read. It will say what it has in the book in the blurb. Dont read than easy as. And what if a book does have homosexuality? GAWSH. I feel like smashing heads. Age group: I get, just higher it. AND I have read the earth, butt and other round things. ITS GREAT. PERFECT AGE GROUP! Idiots in the world.
seriously... I would buy "And Tango Makes Three" for my kid... it teaches positive morals and tolerance... its an amazing kids book... one of my favorites... =)

Books are inefficient. Movies communicate more accurately, effectively, and in less time. I long for the day when we can rid ourselves of this barbaric skill known as reading.
Why wait for bann book week to practice our rights to read books, when we have the right practice our rights to read books every day! We have the power to decide what we want to read, when we want to read and when to stop reading! There is not need for others to decide what is appropiate for us, we have our own mind and our own minds say we want to read this or that BOOK!
Any viewer that may come this channel please read the following book: "Fareinheight451 by Ray Bradbury". The banning of books is similar to the story told there. And for book collectors, save me a copy of each book, I'll purchase them from you and give my greatest gratitude! READ ON!!!

Its very sad to see how the ignorant are so blind as to not see the beauty of books that open doors to mass universe fill with so much enlightenment. Each book is a gateway to a universe of its own, fill with knowledge, adventures, colors, purcerptions, etc, readers may find interesting with accordance to their reading taste. Television cannot give the viewers that, it kills their imagination!
I simply dont agree with banning books, they are all within the 1st amedment. You can not bann a book about satanism (freedom of religion). you can not bann a book for offensive language (freedom of speech).and i have the freedom to write this comment (freedom of press). If you are going to bann a book on porn, why not bann playboy along with it? THINK LOGICALY! LET ME HAVE MY FUCKING FREEDOMS! DONT BANN BOOKS, ITS WRONG!
It amazes me no end how Christians who advocate banning fiction when it deals with certain subject matter, advocate their own children to read the bible which is rife with violence, female mutilation, gang rape, human and animal sacrifice, slavery, incest and genocide just to name a few.
In fact, one of the heroes of the bible David, acts like a peeping tom, lusts over another man's wife, has sex with her and kills her husband.
I guess there is a double standard for religious fiction.
When I was a member of People For The American Way, we monitored all efforts to censor books across the nation. Approximately 95% of those efforts came from Christian fundamentalists, while they like to proclaim that liberals are "intolerant."
America can be so over sensitive i am not sure about them all but you can buy some of them here in England. At the age some one has the incentive to pick up a book and read it they have usually understood sex and herd swearing seems a bit silly banning a book for those reasons.
Books being banned because of offensive language is pure bullshit. There exists too many books with ''offensive'' language to even being able to count them all. Same goes for sexual content.
hehehe they said "SEX". hehehe i feel so giggity

I'm proud to have half of these on my shelf.
Happy banned books month!

I'm just letting you know what it probably was meaning when it said that---not my words--don't say I said it-----it was GOD himself who said it plain and simple!
