I love Wayne Coyne’s fragile voice. He sings with such emotion and vulnerability...he’s one of my favourite singers even though he can’t really sing. I just wanna give him a cuddle :)
@metalheadjesusfreak yep correct hardly any slow covers have been worth the effort. the best covers have pretty much been up-tempo .'watchtower ,,"cry me a river""
You know people complain too much,if they're version was too much like Elvis, then people would say why bother to cover it,and if its too different ,then they say that it ruins the original .Well you can still listen to original song, its not like you cant.I really dont see how a different cover ruins anything.
Big Elvis fan here, and I like this here. I like how they took this great song, and changed the arrangement to fit their style. Been searching throught youtube for find the best Elvis covers, and this certainly is one of them.
What? You guys like cover songs to be exact like a tribute band or something? He took a deeply meaningful song, and reframed it in a thoughtful, introspective way.
I think Elvis would like this version but he'd probably think the Lips are a "bunch a' dang weirdos. What wrong with the feller there with the blood comin' out of his head? 'Zee alright?"
@sex6cult9revolution right on ! wayne is a true artist , lots o peeps can't stand Dylan's voice , another artist . You either get it or you don't. i do feel sorry for the poor sods who just can't grab hold . they are missing out , big time . lips LIVE rules!
I like this, because it is indeed an entirely different take on the song. However, I can't get over the fact that the guitar part sounds like Galaxie 500. Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you...
this song is a rendition,..........its so lovely, the guy has a big soul,........if you cover a great song do it your own way, ....listen to this version in the right state of mind and it will blow you away .........
Exactly. I love Deadicated is a great example of this, Dwight Yokam Yokum>??? version of Friend of the Devil is sooo forlorned and sad compared to the bouncy happy go lucky Dead version.

I don't think Lab1760 missed the point at all. We should just stand up and admit freely when something is complete shite. The only way to play this song is balls out (which is probably the reason the flaming lips couldn't manage the job).
oh stop with the ol "elvis ripped off a song" blah blah blah. look, back then singers didn't neccessarily write thier own songs. there were people who did nothing but WRITE songs. There is nothing wrong with singing other people's songs, and if a writer gets ripped off it is NOT the artist's fault. the fault is the deal that the writer worked out with a publisher. An unknown writer might have someone offer to buy a song out right. big deal? This version is awesome anyway...
I wanted to hear a somewhat faithful cover in the style of the flaming lips, what I got sounded like flaming lips singing the lyrics to suspicioud minds over the music of led zeppelin's rain song, I'm not gonna defend the flaming lips because I'm not gay for them like meadus73.
meadus73 you present your opinions as fact, "single most innovative band of our time" "15 classic albums" we will rock you is a classic, a 69 chevy camaro SS is a classic, the afore mention albums are what you like, the public determins what is a classic, that which stands the test of time, with that said just because something is a classic doesn't make it quality, I like the flaming lips and I like this song, I do not like this cover, I'm not gonna be loyal to the song or the band covering it.
Good points. To me, the albums are classic, and I think most music lovers would agree on the Soft Bulletin being one.
I hear you, though. I own a 1971 El Camino. I love it, but some people think it's the ugliest car in the world.
I do think the Lips could have done this song a hell of a lot better. But at the same time, I wouldn't say Wayne's voice has ever been stellar. It's about the whole performance, which is lacking on this one.
Anyone who shits on the Lips musically is a retard. They are the single most innovative band of our time. Period. And who gives a shit if it's an Elvis song their 'raping'? Elvis was a bloated loser for half his career, and the Lips are still going after 15 classic albums. Pick up 'The Soft Bulletin'. Better than anything Elvis ever did. Fact.
behold the genius that is Wayne Coyne. Shame on you who want covers that sound like the original. The Lips are one of the truly innovative bands around.
innovative or not, that was terrible. I give them credit for changing the arrangement but this is a song you dont fuck with. If you ARE going to change it, make it sound decent or awesome, not whatever this is.
My favourite Elvis song (well tied with In the Ghetto) gets a truly original cover, seeing them on that Dermot O'Leary show was actually what got me into the Flaming Lips who at least are original in their intrepretations (see Kylie's Can't get you out of my head). Thanks trying to track this down for ages
