  • Great shirts.

  • I was there. Dave was not.

  • The greatest and sadest thing I've ever seen. Greatest band EVER!!!!!!!!! Mats forever.

  • Stuff Buddy Holly and Don fucking McLean.

4 July 1991: The REAL Day the Music Died.

And what were we left with? Damned 'Mats Lite called The Goo Goo Dolls and Tommy ending up playing with that never-was Axl Rose.

  • @epsteinsmutha1 Replacements without Bob=not the Replacements.

  • @lakeviewviking If you believe that, you're cheating yourself out of some really brilliant music, but that's your right. I love all of it, whether the Bob on guitar has the last name of Stinson or Dunlap.

  • @epsteinsmutha1 I saws both lineups, and I can tell you it was 2 different bands. Nobody could replace Bob.

  • @lakeviewviking One could say the same about having Steve on the drums instead of Chris, as is the case here. Is THIS The Replacements? It's half of them but 50% is failing. Again, you take your stance and I'll take mine. We can still do that in America. Dig it: If I'm going to eat a sandwich, I'm not going to eat only half just because the filling might be different in concentration in that other half. I'm going to enjoy all of it, but if you only want half, again, that's your right.

  • This is AMAZING to finally watch. Thanks so much for posting. You hear about record companies finding randomness in their archives. Here's hoping...

  • Live drums on this one, eh? Quality!

  • There was a buzz before the show that it was possibly their last. So no one knew quite what to expect. Thing is they came out on FIRE. And there was a palpable "HELL YES!" running through the crowd. But then as quickly as it it started it fizzled. Apropos I suppose but a shame all the same (which is in and of itSELF apropos ....)

  • This is great. Thank you!

  • @13Xanadu Nah, Paul left in a taxi after a minute and a huff.

  • It only got better when the roadies came out and played. What a great show.

  • Fantastic! I have this concert on a bootleg CD but this video (never knew any existed) of their "swan song" really hits home. It's sad, beautiful, and ever so Replacement like.

I would've liked Chris Mars to make it to the final end, but the in-fighting apparently took a toll on him.

  • @machbaby Yeah but man, he put out a great album, "Horseshoes and hand grenades" after the split. And what a painter!

  • the audio sounds like it is from the replacements' last performance at taste of chicago, july 4 1991. (the video is a mix.)

  • @mattaki It more than likely is. I think that's the only time the Mats played this song live. At least that's what I read in the book about them.

  • @misfitsboy123 @misfitsboy123 what book said it was the only time they played it? judging from the archive list of replacements setlists at theskyway (.com), it looks like they played it on almost every tour...

  • What show was it where WYR had the heavy reverb on Paul's voice and he sang the line "I never seen no mountain- except on a 6 pack of beer" I thought that was the final Grant Park July 4 show- XRK recorded it - Anyone know?

  • @Kdny1 I'm pretty sure that was from the 'Shit, Shower & Shave' bootleg (released on Kiss The Stone), which was compiled from various slots when they were opening for Tom Petty. According to Discogs, that particular track was from a set recorded live at Lake Compounce, Bristol Connecticut 31-08-1989.

  • @tensionstrategy Yeah, this is ever so slightly late, but you're absolutely correct. The audio for this appeared on two different bootlegs, Goodbye Bozos (actually a twofer) and Hanging it Up. And the one Kdny1 is thinking of was/is Shit, Shower and Shave.

  • sigh, I've fallen in love with Paul Westerberg...all over again

  • Wasn't the Taste of Chicago show their last show??

  • Wow. That was really cool. Thank god for the Replacements

  • lovely. stunning. the greatest band ever and one of their best songs :) kudos.

  • So it was your cameraman whom Paul threatened with his Axl Rose impersonation?

Thanks for posting this amazing video! Hope to see more.

  • I think we filmed the whole show, but original negs apparently lost by record co.

  • @perryfilmsinc Isn't that typical. Looks like the makings of something fantastic here... what happened to the project?

  • @perryfilmsinc That's such a bummer... Would have made such a great DVD.

  • @perryfilmsinc tragic!

  • @perryfilmsinc Please, please, please . . . for the sake of the fans of this great band, release this on DVD!!

  • @perryfilmsinc Would love to see this historic and beautiful Replacements footage make it to DVD. Please make this available for fans of the band and rock and roll!

  • @perryfilmsinc So any luck on finding any more of the footage from the final show? I'd kill for a copy of it!

  • Wow! I've got the audio of the Chicago show, but have never seen any of the video. Thanks! Was the whole show filmed?

  • Bloody brilliant!

  • go figure i was just looking for a video of this, and it was posted a few days ago. thanks!
