It's very difficult to sing and play the melody on the slide WHILE keeping the rhythm going on the bass strings. You make it look and sound effortless. Wish I could do that !!!
@snakehips81 Thank you for your comment. Well, it took time to get the various parts together, but if you really want this skill, you can achieve it too with a disciplined persistent practice. Singing against recordings I made of just playing guitar helps a lot. Simple songs with alternating bass and bottleneck will make your skills stronger before you move onto more challenging songs. Enjoy your practice.
do you know what kind of stella charlie patton was using, or it's the one that you were playin' ? i really crazy about patton, maybe i'll buy that stella someday, haha...
thanks btw for always answers all of my silly questions...
@bona371 Thank you for your question. No one fully knows, but if you do some research you will come across accounts that Patton played Stella guitars. I believe it was Son House who said, Patton owned a high end Stella that had a "tree of life" inlay in the fingerboard. Oscar Schmidt Stella guitar were available through mail order down South and were very affordable. Regardless, no truss rod, open headstock, ladder braced, concert size is the typical 1930 guitar. Enjoy.
@garyhicks789 Thank you for your comments. Glad to hear you enjoyed my rendition. I don't pay too much attention to original keys or tunings, but I create arrangements based on my own impressions. Basically, I play in the key that is best for my voice. Happy New Year. Enjoy.
@deltabilly1 Thank you for sharing. Yes, The majority of bottleneck blues is either played in Spanish or Vestapol tuning. In general, even though there are advantages and disadvantages to both of these tuning, it is possible to arrange in either one effectively. It is just a matter of understand the intervals between the strings. The two tunings have much more in common than they have differences. Enjoy.
@DasMe86 Thank you for your encouraging comment. You can still find these guitars on ebay. The real problem is condition. Fortunately, I have a friend who is a professional guitar builder. Over the years, I purchased guitars that he was able to repair and we sold them at a profit. I was slowly able to afford this model. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.
@sheilapatrick1 Thank you for your comment. The light construction and ladder bracing on these old 1930 guitars combined with the open tuning and slide technique really brings out their sound. I appreciate your interest and encouragement. Enjoy.
hey kenilee, im 18 yo, and im tryin to learn more about the early delta blues, im listening to charley patton, son house, tommy johnson, and of course robert johnson... can you give me another names as a reference??
@zthetha Thank you for your comment. Charlie Patton is a first generation Delta Blues originator. Not as well known as Robert Johnson, but definitely worth a listen or two. Google Stella guitars for more info. You can still find them for sale on ebay, but unfortunately the cheaper ones need a lot of work to make them playable. Enjoy.
That was very cool. Wish I still had the ole Stella I had when I was like 9 or so, that would have been about 1966. I started playing guitar on it, it was a stella tenor guitar, 4 string. Was pretty good for a kid to learn on, just had to learn the bottom two string fingerings to play 6 string. It was painted black with a small sunburst painted round the soundhole and bridge area. Painted on Stella logo on the headstock. Won't mean anything these days. I thought it was cool back then.
@DynaflowDonnie Thank you for your comments and sharing some personal thoughts. Well, if you ever wanted to regain the guitar of your youth, search on ebay. I have seen some Stella tenor guitars over the years. Enjoy.
I feel like I just watched a video from 1930, so cool! FYI, I recently bought a Seagull parlor guitar, I think they call it a grand concert or something like that. It was 299.00 and it has a really nice small bodied vintage sound. I'd definitely recommend that to anyone who doesn't wan to invest the time and money into resurrecting old guitars.
@tjfoxx Thank you. Unfortunately, there is just not enough time in the day. LOL I hope at some point to be able to tab out my arrangements. Do you have my instructional video CD 1? It contains a lot of foundational material that will help you figure this arrangement out by yourself. Please check it out on ebay by searching:
Thank you for your comment. Yes, that big 12 string Stella Leadbelly plays has a massive tone. I would play a 12 string but tuning 6 strings is enough for me. LOL Enjoy.
@KeniLeeBurgess: Any tips on open tuning w/o breaking strings? like are any strings better for it? im always worried ill break the strings tuning them up.
Thank you for your question. Tuning up? Are you tuning above standard tuning to E and A? Why not try tuning down to D and G. You can use a capo at the second fret to get E and A. Enjoy.
If you play a resonator ( a lot heavier than any acoustic wood guitar) it is easier to support. Also your body alignment is better for your back in the classical position. Many of the guitars manufactured in the 1920 and 1930 were small bodied, almost parlor sized. It is nearly impossible to play a larger (jumbo)guitar in this position comfortably. Enjoy.
Yes, I have a music CD called Good & Evil and four instructional video CDs. Please visit ebay and search: Keni Lee I will send you some information also. Thank you. Enjoy.

Thank you. Oscar Schmidt Stella guitars were manufactured in the 1920 and 30s, in my home town of New Jersey. They were sold mainly thru mail order catalogues. Due to their inexpensive price, they found their place in the hands of many early rural blues players. You can still find them on ebay, but they usually need a lot of work to restore. A classic piece of Americana. The light construction and ladder bracing produces a wonder tone in open tunings. They don't make em like this anymore.
Thank you for your comment and question. Yes, I am using a heavy glass slide made out of a Mateus wine bottle. These old Stella guitars with their ladder bracing and light wood construction really ring in open tuning. The thumb and finger picks are essential too for producing a good tone. Enjoy.
Thank you for your comment. A vintage Mateus wine bottle makes a great slide, but I would not recommend drinking it. Yuck! You can still find old Stella guitars for very little money. Unfortunately, they usually require massive reconstruction to get them back into playing order, but as you can hear, it is well worth it. They play especially well in open tuning with a bottleneck slide. Enjoy.
Thank you for your comment. Actually this same model was just on ebay and sold for $450. The neck needs to be reset, but everything else was original. Considering it is about 80 years old and can be restored to a playable condition, I think it is a reasonable price. Enjoy.
When the majority of people have turned to Hip-Hop and other crap its comforting to know that there's still some people out there keeping the blues alive....that was awesome dude!

Thank you and welcome to my page. Soon, I am going to begin a series of lessons geared for the beginners on classic gospel tunes. My first three instructional CDs focused on Bottleneck Delta Blues style. CD 4 will be available soon on 3 string Cigar Box Guitar. Series 5 ( 4 string CBG) and Series 6 (classic gospel guitar) I will be offering free simultaneously on my page. Please feel free to write if you have any questions or if you would like to chat. Enjoy.
my dad has an old stella like your's. It's black with sort of a sunburst top. The back is separating, but I used to play it while I was younger. My dad still has it, plus an old Harmony Sovereign six string that needs help, too. Your playing is really amazing. If you teach you must have some really happy students. I would love to be able to play like that.
Thank you for your kind words. If you are interested in studying with me, please consider purchasing my instructional video CD 1. It is perfect for beginners and will help you put those nice vinatage guitars to good use. Please go to ebay and Search: Keni Lee. Very reasonably priced at $9.99 plus shipping for almost 2 hours of lessons. In addition, you can write to me if any questions arise as you work through the lessons. Enjoy.
Thank you for your comment. Please visit my main page. The videos are organized to make your selection easier and your visit more enjoyable. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.
Thank you. Yes, I think you are right. It is just another time consuming project. Another iron in fire! My tab writing skills are not quite up to speed, but if I do it more, they certainly will improve. Enjoy.
Seems as though the timing of this song is awkward. Is it like 2 different timings between the main part and the other parts? Looks easy but I'm having a hard time with it :)
Yes, be sure to hear the original. Charlie Patton played many songs that were the building blocks of the early Blues style. Just like Robert Johnson, he drops one rhythm and picks up another one on a dime. Getting his feel and timing is very challenging to make it come out sounding right. Enjoy.
i have a stella from my great grandfather i received last year in really bad condition the back was almost completely off so i made a new oak one and clamped it down with wood glue for awhile the bridge was moveable and there was a metal part that wrapped around the side and it has a great tone to it since i fixed it up but i know it was made around the 1940s but im not sure when and no guitarist i ask knows either and my great grandfathers dead do you know where i could find out??
Very nice. Great to have a family heirloom passed down to you. Do you have any pictures posted online? I would love to see it. You could also contact Neil Harp at stellaguitars. He is a connoisseur of vintage Stella guitars. Enjoy.
thank you very much my friend. you are a superb guitarist and i like the soul you put into the music i seen you play ill try to get my buddys camera and find a way to give you some pictures
Keni, i'm speechless. Beautiful song and your Stella has some awesome tone!! BRAVO friend, BRAVO!! I'm gonna look into getting some of Charlie Patton's work. Keep em' comin!!
Thank you for all the kind words. Yes, listen to Mr. Patton. Be prepared, his existing recordings are made from old 78 RPM records. Unfortunately, the masters are is poor condition, but there is some real gems hidden in all the static. Enjoy.
Thank you. I tried to introduce viewers to Charlie Patton. Although he is the Father of the Country Blues, he is usually out shined by his children, Son House, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, etc. In addition, it is quite romantic to play and hear one of these vintage Stella guitars that was clearly the instrument these masters had available to play. Enjoy
Thank you for all the kind words. This Stella guitar was recently sold on ebay. I also sold the other Stella that apears in Nobody's Fault but Mine. I have one more Stella that I haven't used in a video yet. This one I'm keeping. If you search ebay it is possible to find some real treasures. Unfortunately, you need a good guitar technician to get them into shape. Enjoy.
Thank you. Yes, I agree, there is nothing like the tone and sustain of these vintage ladder braced Stella guitars. Good Luck with your Resonator build. Enjoy.
Thank you again for all your kind words. Open tuning is a wonderful way to play the guitar, and all the sympathetic droning tones makes the sound brillant. Enjoy.
Thank you. I'm using Windows movie maker. The guitar sounds even better live. My camera records okay, but doesn't capture it's true beauty. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.
I can image it really does, I've seen on the video you're using an open c# tuning for this number (tuned down an half tune from the open D, is it correct?). Go ahead Keni your tuned are almost good. xxx Claudio
Yes C#. I mostly like to sing in c,c#,d or f,f#, g.This guitar has a nice tension and rings well in c#, so that is why I decided to play in c#. Happy Holidays!
hey hey. I just received your series one bottle neck lesson off of ebay, and your CD. It is all very neat! was a little bummed that you did not include the lyrics on the tab of lesson 2. Thats as far as i have gotten! Keep up all the great work, and good luck with your musical career.
Thank you for your support. I'm sorry about the lyrics, but everything is easily found by googling or listening to my versions or better yet, the originals on CD or Youtube. Happy Holidays and Enjoy!
Thank you. I've been on youtube for about 2 years now. It has been a real learning experience; computers, software, cameras, lighting, video production, etc. I'm glad I finally figured out windows movie maker. I agree, having a good visual is just as important as a good audio. It certainly adds to the overall impact. I have plans to expand into short story line based music videos in the future. Thank you for your encouragement. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.
Thank you. An awful lot of nice words and Holiday Wishes. Thank you for your continued interest and the encouraging comments. It is friends like you that make it all worth it. Hoping Health, Wealth, and Happiness for you and your loved ones for the Holiday Season and throughout the new year. 2009!!!
Excellent Keni !!! The black and white grainy look goes so well with this song . Good looking axe too ! You the Man. Happy Holidays to you and your family Keni .
Thank you. You got to love Windows Movie Maker! There is a setting for an older film look that looks great in color, but the footage gets too jumpy. Makes me sea sick. lol. Ya, it is getting harder and harder to get cheap crap on ebay to fix up. I got outbid by $5 on a cool parlor size Stella that had a pearloid fingerboard. It went for $330. Oh well, easy come...easy go! Have a Happy Holiday Season, and Best Wishes for you and your loved ones. Health, Wealth and Happiness in 2009. Enjoy!
Thank you. Surly, one man's trash is another man's treasure. I agree too. It is nice to hear how beautiful it rings, considering what it once looked like. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.
Super great as always! The Oscar Schmidt built ones were supposedly very fine instruments, but the guitars with "Harmony" or "Stella Harmony" I think started in production in the late 40's or 50's are really pretty crappy. You can tell if it has a star on the headstock, it's harmony. They had things like screwed on pick guards and heavily constructed guitars, but with horrible cheap wood. The Oscar Schmidt ones are pretty amazing!
BTW - we're moving soon, but expect some videos from me
Thank you. There are some very early Harmony guitars that are very similar to the Stella guitars, but they are rare. I believe the Oscar Schmidt company employed many Italian guitar builders. This is certainly before the mass production method of companies like Harmony.
Thank you bigfrank. I'm really amazed by the sound. It growls and rumbles. My little camera mic doesn't fully express it's beauty. I can see why, besides being inexpensive, the old Masters loved Stella guitars. Happy Holidays! Enjoy. Peace on Earth and all that good stuff!
Thank you. Please see this video, Sound Sample Prison art Bottleneck Blues Guitar SOLD ,Bill does a nice performance of Guitar Rag. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.
Very nice singing and playing.
It's very difficult to sing and play the melody on the slide WHILE keeping the rhythm going on the bass strings. You make it look and sound effortless. Wish I could do that !!!
Excellent.

my dad has an old stella like your's. It's black with sort of a sunburst top. The back is separating, but I used to play it while I was younger. My dad still has it, plus an old Harmony Sovereign six string that needs help, too. Your playing is really amazing. If you teach you must have some really happy students. I would love to be able to play like that.

Excellent. I am a stranger to the Blues and I have to say that the sheer emotion that just pours out in the music is absolutely beautiful.
Thank you.

Awesome, how did I miss this one? Kenni, you should start sellin tabs. You the God of blues arrangements
jamescaptainfarrell 2 years ago

Looks easy but I'm having a hard time with it :)
jamescaptainfarrell 2 years ago

Enjoy.

Enjoy.

sounds like Amazing Grace, huh?

Yes, I shall not be moved has a churchy sound. but the melody line is completely different than Amazing Grace. Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

Enjoy.

Love those Stellas. Just got my grimy mitts on a couple of Stella parlor guitars, gonna make a thrift store resonator out of one of them.
I love your playing and singing, Keni. You really know how to take the sound back to it's roots. Keep up the great work.

Thank you. Yes, I agree, there is nothing like the tone and sustain of these vintage ladder braced Stella guitars. Good Luck with your Resonator build. Enjoy.

I can image it really does, I've seen on the video you're using an open c# tuning for this number (tuned down an half tune from the open D, is it correct?). Go ahead Keni your tuned are almost good. xxx Claudio
joyce55 3 years ago
Yes C#. I mostly like to sing in c,c#,d or f,f#, g.This guitar has a nice tension and rings well in c#, so that is why I decided to play in c#. Happy Holidays!

Great inspiration.
I got out my Silvertone and played along with Wade in the Water - loved that one too.
The movie maker look is so great to watch.
The story of the Stella and how it was resurected was cool. I will check out that site some time.

Enjoy.

Enjoy!

BTW - we're moving soon, but expect some videos from me
BTW
davensonya 3 years ago
Thank you. There are some very early Harmony guitars that are very similar to the Stella guitars, but they are rare. I believe the Oscar Schmidt company employed many Italian guitar builders. This is certainly before the mass production method of companies like Harmony.

bigfrank1961 3 years ago
Thank you bigfrank. I'm really amazed by the sound. It growls and rumbles. My little camera mic doesn't fully express it's beauty. I can see why, besides being inexpensive, the old Masters loved Stella guitars. Happy Holidays! Enjoy. Peace on Earth and all that good stuff!
