i feel 4 these guys .ive watched the film and just finished readin the book..its obvious they did hav sum bad luck, but at 1 point they were on the verge of real success and then it just faded out , theres nothin more tragic than a lost dream ..regardles of how good the recent albums are supposed 2 be .their still past 50 and makin no real money from their music..they live 4 the music they make ,thats clear 2 c but they must both still hav a deep pain in the hearts that they didnt "make it"
I was a big fan in the 80's...lost sight of them later...saw this doc. and totally like ém again....I am 46 years old, one kid...still love metal and still have an acient tattoo of Anvil on my shoulder since the beginning of the 80's.......I love these guys...they are the real deal...:-) And I am fuckin' happy for them, they now get the success they deserve for years.....well done Anvil...:-)
If all these popular bands loved them so much, why didn't the likes of metallica help to promote them and get in touch with them after they were out of the limelight?
i saw the doc the other night it touches my heart how such a great band goes through everything from working in factories, construction going to new places and cities recieving no money for there gig just to make a living while loving what they do most for god sake i even cried some tears for these guys
Wow,what can I say about these guys that all have said before. When I first became aware of them I was blown away by not just their story but the cool sounding music and of course the passion/dedication to what they do and each other.I look forward to seeing them again some day for the second time......
dam...i wanna watch the doc soooo bad. but i gotta wait 3 years. my friend and i are gunna go on a road trip and start a band and right before we start, were gunna watch the doc.
I admire these guys so much... they are so freaking awesome and you can really tell how much they love each other, its really sweet in an odd kinda way
not in anyway a fan of metal but i adore this film and adore the guys in the band, cry every time i see it. I hope they get everything they want. God bless anvil, just dont make me listen to the albums :)
No way..... I'm not a metal fan, but these dudes got me to actually purchase their album that's a first for me in a long time. I'm digging the music. I I'm not even going to bit torrent them.
I think if they had been European they would have been bigger than they were. Bands like Grave Digger, Edguy, Blind Guardian have that "cheese" factor that most America tends to despise, but Europe sort of eats that up and you can make it big despite that. I think they must have had bad management too.
The story of Anvil is the best documentary about rock&roll ever. This guys are real. Lips rules. I don't like Heavy Metal but this guys are great people.
IF you have done it yet. Buy or download(iTunes) Metal on Metal album. I guarantee you become a fan and at the same time scratch head in shock on why the fuck this band didn't get its due sooner.
Hi there! Sorry to be a disturbance but my videos are rather underrated and so on and I would wish to become more popular so if you are looking for something new and fresh to watch which shall make you laugh and also blow you away at the same time then go on my Youtube Channel known as Liamfra22 and you will be able to see my vids and enjoy them all which can help me become more popular and I would like that as that would be a very cool thing to do.
I watched this film out of interest. I felt sorry for them but let's be brutally honest here : they are SHIT, and that is real reason they didn't make the big time. Total tenth rate rip off merchants with no real song writing talent. Their lyrics are absurdly infantile.
@METALkid614 Maybe so, but I've listened to enough bands to realise that when compared to other heavy metal bands, they fall some way behind. Their music seems so banal and cliched. Just my humble opinion.
@ThefightingCelt as much as I'm inclined to agree, it's all down to personal taste really. A fair amount of metal follows that suit and, in many respects, these were the guys that got the heavier element of metal underway. They're not the rip off merchants, it was they who were ripped on and left to die in a Canadian gutter while other bands took the limelite. Look at bands like Iron Maiden, the whole demonic facade and irrelevant lyrics there pull a maaaasive fan base.
@mmxbreaks I agree about the personal taste comment, 100%. Regarding the guys in the band; don't get me wrong, I have the utmost sympathy for them, but it is a dog eat dog business and I sincerely hope they are now doing well - but I still feel their material was not as strong as it should have been. Yes, they may have been left behind, but as Roger Daltrey once said many years ago - the really great bands last longer because they have the talent. Blame Black Sabbath for the demonic trait ; )
Lips and Rob what a lasting friendship and a LOVE of playing their music for the sake of playing.. I agree they are finally getting their dues and no other band deserves it more..!!
Anvil is great! Saw them at least 6 times in the 80's. During a gig at the Gasworks in Toronto I chatted with Steve (Lips) after one of the sets. What an energetic and friendly individual. Looking forward to watching The story of Anvil next week and seeing them live once again!
I absolutely love these guys...They're so inspiring, all heart and soul.I have the utmost respect for what they do...Thank you Lips, whenever I need a little pickme up and hope I look around youtube for you. You're more than a musician, your positive spirit is just amazing. Rock on fellows, you deserve all the good things coming to you.
David Price of Billboard magazine conducted this interview
with Anvil and i met this guy at an AC/DC show were anvil opened up for them i was sitting in a row infront of him and he said if i would like to meet the band and i said "FUCK YA!!!!"
These guys are the real deal! I love 'em! I've watched the movie 3 times already, and I could watch it over-and-over weithout getting tired of it... They just keep me so entertained; I watch the movie and I can imagine myself hanging out with these people :)
Find it funny that Billboard Magazine is airing this vid. It never thought highly of Anvil or else it would've charted its albums much higher on the Top 200 albums chart. Just like other bands who deserved more acclaim from mags like Billboard & Rolling Stone, back in the day Anvil got a raw deal from those publications. I think only 1 Anvil album even charted in the US on the Billboard Top 200 albums. That's just wrong b/c this was a landmark group in the world of thrash & speed metal.
Not exactly true!! In the 70s & 80s there were artists who had albums that barely charted & their albums went gold & sold slightly better than some of the LPs that were charted ahead of them. Anvil was 1 of em. We can also blame the radio industry for snubbing their music too. Anvil was a huge hit in their native Canada. 4 or 5 of their earlier LPs charted in the Top 100 on the albums charts there. The fact that BB charts albums based on sales is just a myth. BB was & is a popularity contest.
I'm not a metal fan at all - having said that, "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" - Is a great surprising documentary... well worth seeing even if your not into the music.
Too bad it's gonna get overloooked by movie critics since it's in theaters the same time as Michael Jackson's overhyped This Is It concert film. I hope if I were all these critics I'd give this film a good hard look before panning it. It oughta be a 2 thumbs up.

Yeah. They decided to fire that European blonde chick as their manager, and Ivan sided with the girl over the band. Plus, there's a scene where Anvil plays Ivan's and the girl's wedding.
