  • And that's what i call the highly intelligent rat. Is he Wistar or Sprague-Dawley?

  • I don't see or hear it. The music seems to be the same. There is no variation.

  • Ass. How dare you. Rats are people too!

  • @Maddieyeah14 actually they're rodents. derp.

  • @madnessinthedirt no need for rude attitude. rats and other animals dont deserve this....

  • @Maddieyeah14 I wasn't being rude, I was just stating a fact. derp.

  • @Maddieyeah14 People too?

  • wow

  • WATER?! THATS HIS REWARD

    WOW U REALLY SUCK !!!

  • this is animal testing!

  • @melodie973 who cares?

  • @melodie973 Who cares, they're rats? people kill them every day.... at least this ones alive....

  • @melodie973 i totally agree

  • @melodie973 Yup, it's behavioral psychology, which is a college course and accepted worldwide?

  • Suggests you look at

    Youtube.com/watch?v=PI9Q1acVIPQ

  • good

  • Rats are very smart. Mine used to get real excited to certain music. Rat experiments or any animal experiments should be banned! Some of the scientists deserve to be burned alive for the cruelty they inflict.

  • Dunno man - I currently have a few rats I am testing out the effects of BPA(Bisphenol Acetone) on. Honestly I think I am making some head way on them the ones on BPA are acting different than the ones without and since it is a chemical that is "safe" on human I see no problems with testing it on rats - 'sides they get some good loving from me.

  • @TheEasyon1 Would you rather it be them or you?

  • This is no more stressful for the rat than any activity you typically engage in. It is stimulating and enjoyable. In addition, rats who do not have adequate care and socialization tend to be much less successful at learning...as is also seen in people. Based upon this rat's behavior, it would appear that it has received at least adequate care and probably very good care.

  • @dhmcdonaldphd You seem knowledgable about rats. I have a 3 year old labrat that has a huge cancer but can still walk good. I love her. Should I let her go in the woods to experience nature till something eats it. Or should I put a bullet in her head??? My wife wants it gone. Your opinion would be appreciated.

  • The rat is still getting water but able to use its brain to do so. Figuring things out is good for rats. Unlike just having the bare necessities placed in the same bowl every day this teaches them to problem solve and think to get them. Do you think a kong dog treat is bad for dogs cuz it makes them work for the treat inside? Don't be so damn sensitive and stupid.

  • YEA its cool but how cool is it to put a rat in a box for 5 minutes? and have no free time? and do u think it likes doing that? NO!!! thats totally cool?!!!! dumb fucks!!!!

  • remarkable

  • Eureka!!! Ha! Kind and most humble regards,

  • Can you believe it you've already finished c?

  • how do you know that it's not that the rat has just learned to test both apperatuses when it's not immediatly rewarded? If negativity was employed maybe that point would get along faster. Or do you think the rat gets the jist of it after a certain amount of time that it's the musics difference, and not just the fact that it's playing.

  • okay i have to point something out i've noticed after saying this, between 4:58 and 5:01 when the rat pauses at the actual change of the music before pulling the chain, and switches to the lever definitly suggests distinguishing between the 2 musics and the difference of the mechanisms.

  • rats are the best pets. They are very intelligent and loving creaturees. Hope you guys find him a good home when your done. cheers.

  • Good job! Great video!

  • No coyneface, that is not an example of a confounding variable. Instead, it is an operational definition. There's nothing wrong with that. The rat has no conceptualization of genres.

  • (A modification that would make this experiment critique-proof would be to charge each component on the music shift. This way, if the rat goes to actuate the chain on the classical theme, or vice versa, it would receive a mild shock. This would truly reinforce going after the correct actuator with as few mistakes as possible. I admit that the setup would be somewhat complicated, but if the rat could be shown to anticipate the shock, it would clear the dead actuator as a suspect stimulus.)

  • To me, it looks like it knew to switch only when each mechanism stopped working, not when the music changed...

  • What you meant to say is: no reinforcement after pressing the lever is the Sd in which pulling the chain will result in the delivery of a reinforcer.

Possibly. This was my thought as well. However, the experiment is totally cool.

  • neat smart rat

  • Adorable

  • ): How long did he go without water to do this!!! :(

  • rats are very smart animals. i know this cuz i own 3 ")

  • What is the point of this?

  • A demonstration.

  • Brilliant discrimination training... Western Michigan has a great ABA program! I am at Kansas... I must admit that even though I work with humans in applied settings, this is friggin awesome!

  • Wow, can you ever put some videos of your campus online? I wanna go to WMU or KU. :P

  • thats friggin sweet

  • Is the rat really trained to discriminate between the two musical styles or just the two songs? As a psych student this interests me.

  • I doubt the rat can hear music like we do, the jazz music is bassy and most likely vibrating in the cage, whereas the classical is monotone and highpitched and not vibrating. i bet if you put a double bass instrument in with the classical music it would press the other one.

  • cuuute

  • i heard dr. malott pulled the rat from the program and took him to a conference to present.

she trained him with the same two songs, but when they tried other classical and jazz songs, he discriminated perfectly.

  • No, Dr. Malott did not pull the rat from the program to present at a conference. I believe she started generalization and that the rat did generalize to other jazz and classical songs other than the ones he was trained on, but the semester came to an end and she could not finish this part of the experiment. This would be a great experiment to do though!

  • lol, that's the cutest rat

  • Excellent skinner box experiment! Learning about it from a textbook just isn't the same.

  • I've heard alot about the "Rat Lab" but never have had the opportunity to view the RATS in action. This is intersting and makes me hungry

  • This is great! It certainly tops Kendra Combs' experiment where she shaped the rat to give her a high five. Well done!

  • My sister is the brains behind this experiment, this is her rat Fosse!
