[12] The Narragansett Indians had a vision of themselves as "a nation rather than a race", and it was a multiracial nation. They insisted on their rights to Indian national status and its privileges by treaty.[12]
i love this clip because it has a part where my father dances and i have no video clips of him dancing he is where the clip says 53 seconds! champion eastern war dancer HIAWATHA BROWN ( NARRAGANSETT INDIAN tribal council man for over 30 years)
I dislike racist people. They are seldom intelligent enough to hold a conversation with. They seldom know their own histories. This land was populated by many "different" peoples and there is anthropological proof dating pre-columbian.
BTW, If you think that your blood is so pure, try having your genealogy done. You may be surprised to find that you are probably not the most genuine article, yourself.
Also, the next time you want to speak out about racial politics, check your grammar. Or, at least, use spellcheck.
We cannot marry in our own tribe. Otherwise we would ,most likely, be marrying our own cousins and that is much worse than "marryin out" as you claim. We are all children of the Great Spirit. Our skin color does not play any part in the continuation of our culture and traditions. We are all part of only ONE race. That is the human race.
There are Native People who are "dark" because they are native, and there are native people who are dark because of africans- do not dispel those of us who are the product of anglo native ancestry while embracing those of afro native ancestry- we are all brothers. The pure-blooded are few and far between today, is it better to judge who is more Indian and divide the people?
This is beautiful and thank you for sharing this. It is always wonderful to see what the native people on the east coast do when they honor their ancestors and their land. I am Native Hawaiian-Kanaka Maoli, amongst us as well as those on Big Turtle island the prophecy goes..the day will come long after the marches, long after the grandfathers have died when we will stand at midday amongst our enemies and they will not know that we are there. You never know who is native so accept everyone.
I'm part Narragansett and Wampanoag! I have blond hair and blue eyes, so people probably don't believe it, but I could care less. Love Native American traditions and costume!
I am a blue eyed, blonde haired Narragansett/Pequot....don't let the looks fool you! ;-)
Thanks Swift Cloud for posting this video, it is wonderful to see The Narragansett's dance...and the Mohawks, and all the Nations represented here. Beautiful! Thanks for your teachings!!
There are many different styles of headdress and regalia represented at our gatherings. As well as many different Indian Nations. Though mainly Narragansett, our August meetings have always been blessed with representation from friends, brothers and sisters of many local and distant tribes as well. So, yes, there are some Mohawk headdresses. As far as "pale indians" go, please be careful how you word it. My skin is "pale" too, due to genetic blending throughout the generations.
Yes there are posers, I guess, but I believe that being "Native" is a way of being connected to the land, the people and all living creatures. And the belief that we are all the Creators children and live to respect Mother Earth, Grandfather Sky and the four directions. And we all have our own beautiful and unique traits. As do the colors of our skin, hair and eyes all contribute to the variable spectrum of our majestic Mother Earth, we make up the color life itself.

@condorlegion89 Well that's not fair now. I am about 85% Native American and my skin is "pale" to a point. You see, it all has to do with genetics. If I had a full blood Native American mother (which I do) and a "part" Indian father, his recessive "pale skin" gene could become dominant in me. It's all about genetics, and when my schoolmates tell me "you're not indian, you're white, look at your skin, its pale" It's quite upsetting. But I'm not mad at you or dissing you out or anything ^^
I am a member of the tribe. I have permission from the council. And it is only forbidden to record certain rituals performed during the meeting. This one is not one of them.

I think it is beautiful and tribes have never been exclusive historically.
The headdresses are somewhat different from the Mohawk headdress.
Thanks for sharing

Nice video. I hate to see "pale indians" (reenactors playing indians). Prosperity for your people.
They have Mohawk headdress?
PEACE
