That was a good interview, despite the poor quality of the video. A lot of people would go to great lengths for the opportunity to interview Chomsky, myself included. You were very fortunate. Thanks for posting.
Xenu, he wasnt agreeing with the bolshevik position, he was just laying it out. notice how he speaks of the interference of foreign powers being a handy excuse for their authoritarian behaviour, destruction of the soviets etc. if you are not convinced then you need only refer to the other videos on youtube where he talks about anarcho-syndicalism to hear that he favours this type of organisation, which only you describe as poorly functioning.
I did not mean worker councils are inherently faulty. On the contrary, In both the Soviet Union and revolutionary Spain productivity increased considerably once the workers' took control of the means of production. But it is a fact that in Russia the soviets could not overcome the economic crisis. Chomsky himself in another lecture has mentioned this fact. Lenin's destruction of the soviets & introduction of state capitalism is based on this fact.
Nice, I was interested in Noam's thoughts about Ralph Nader-that even if he were to become president he could not do anything. Although I agree with that, that he could not pass things through congress. I believe he could bring things into the agenda, say actually talk about the Israel-Palestine conflict, about corporate power etc. Although what he latter said about having to buy yourself into the white house means Nader will probly never get in. Thanks for the vids, veri thought provoking.
What happened to the end of the interview?!? Oh well. It's interesting to hear Prof Chomsky basically agree - or so it seemed to me - with the Marxist position that Russian wasn't objectively ready for socialism. Lenin destroyed the poorly functioning soviets and instituted state capitalism. Chomsky seems to be saying that the best Russia could have done is social democracy with the soviets maintaining at least some of their power (I wonder how far he would take that). Clarification very needed.
i agree with daoguode. in numerous other interviews he talks about rosa luxembourg and others whom he agrees with who harshly criticized lenin and trotsky as totalitarian and predicted the rise of the USSR tyranny. if you listen to his talks on anarchism his view is that the basic form of workers council govt. (soviets) is the best form of democratic govt.
I'm aware that Chomsky is anti-Bolshevik. I was not saying that he agreed with all of their positions just that he is saying here that anarchism could not have occurred immediately in Russia. If he believes the Constituent Assembly should have been maintained than that would have meant a state co-existing with the soviet system: a strange mixed economy half social democratic half socialist. This seems to fit with the Marxist idea that Russia wasn't objectively ready for socialism.
yep, Marx visited Russia and he came to the conclusion that you can't have a revolution there yet because it's not industrialized. The problem with the USSR was that it was an agricultural state and Lenin had to change communism A LOT to apply it to Russia
damn. abrupt end

I'm pretty sure he was gonna say "in the peasantry," because that's what he was just discussing.
