I believe businesses should remain a "survival of the fittest" race. If the company execs are wasting the money they make on things they don't need, then they deserve to lose the company. However, I feel that they knew long ago that the company was going down, and they played the system by making sure they covered themselves first.
The way I see it, if I were an executive...
If I saw the sales slipping and the costs rising, I'd want to make sure I'd be well taken care of before I had no job.

On the bloomberg cable television channel around 2003 an economic adviser quite siply said GM - General motors cannot compete with rivals due its generous pension scheme which will bankrupt it.
This points to the question of why the US government didnt just rescue GM's pension plan?

well my 92 ford taurus wagon has been great. its got 260k on it, and this is hard driven. ur neighbour propbably get their jap crap to last so long because they drive like a grandma. my taurus in its life has only had $600 in repairs, and all my fault. same time my nissan has 130k on it and i have spent $7000 on it. japanese cars cant handle any abuse. if i drove the jap cars the way i do my american ones, i would have the pistons flying out through the hood.

Conservatives and most "free market" neoliberals believe in "personal responsibility" as long as it doesn't apply to the rich or business owners. They lose no sleep over telling laid-off workers (many of whom were laid off for no reason other than downsizing) to go work at Burger King but the moment an executive or manager faces the same threat for their mistakes they're ready to give them a handout. They still believe that an economy runs by making sure the top 5% stays filthy rich.

Ford hired him 2 years ago to do the same, and he was going to give them a profit in 2009, something they haven't had in 3 years, until the financial industry crashed. And Chrysler was owned by Mercedes benz until they were bought out 8 months ago. So you can blame them for screwing chrysler.
