It makes me fell old ... knowing how to use a cassette ...all this 2000's generation know is ...charge the ipod and viola ...presto. well, not a bad video but i think there should be less video of u and more of the equipment but generally it seems u like talking, try getting some freinds, girls make nice freinds.
Great vid! Thanks so much. I want to do this as a gift for someone that hasa huge box of old tapes. I had to give you a thumbs up just for admitting that Twisted Sister was your first tape--I think I was 2 when they came out.....*smile*
in the 1990s (bad time) we wrote about 50 songs. They were mixed and put on ordinary audio cassette. made one copy, but would like to get them digitized
ion just annoy me, making expensive equipment like this when you can just get a mini jack lead and plug it into the source and the line on on your computer
I still don't understand why people are using mp3's. Is it out of pure ignorance? Mp3's existed in the first place because hard drives in the early downloading days were small and not everyone had a fast connection. These days hard drives can store vast amounts of music, and FLAC ensures lossless quality and still reduced file size, yet still people talk about mp3's like they're cutting edge. They're the absolute worst quality of pretty much any audio format. Die already.
I have the ION VHS2PC and I love it - guess I need to look into this one. BTW Chris - when I was in 2nd grade JFK was assasinated the year before - you arent that old. LPs, 45's and reel-to-reel were it when I was a kid. We thought 8 track was neat then came cassette - no more warped LPs carrying them in your car to play at your friend's house. BTW does this have external inputs to play from other audio sources?
is that shit worth archiving? ;) I think your hand-made recording of random sounds are going to be a lot more interesting... Let us know when they're uploaded! ;)
Cassettes are great! still play them, they have soul. My oldest cassette I got was as a child, it has violin pieces on it that went with a coursebook, from when I took violin classes. Its an old TDK Black cassette that plays like new. Can't say the same for some of my rotting scratched CD's
my first cassette was Back in Black - AC/DC... I have every version of that album.. I have the Vinyl record, cassette, CD, Dualdisc, Bonfire remaster, and 2003 remaster lol
The poster seems nice and showmanship, however, This clip does not help much because, the hardest part is setting up Audacity. On audacity website it talks about channel 2, which I dont see that on audacity I downloaded, also, my audacity does not look like the one on the site. Also, this clip does not say anything about the cable that u plug to the IN in your sound card. This poster does not show the intricate details at all, he is just excited to be on youtube.
If you get the Ion TAPE2PC deck, it is USB. Plug it in to a USB port on your main motherboard (not a "hub") install the EZ Tape Converter software, and make sure your "Input" is set correctly to USB in your System Prefs, and off you to.
Jeez...I haven't seen this guy in AGES. He goes way back to the TechTV days, which is now g4, sadly. he had great computer tips. Wish he still had the show.
I find it incredible that anyone would check out any video on how to do this. It is just too easy. I have been converting vinyl and cassette to digital since I figured how to record with Microsoft Sound Recorder. WAV!!! But if it helps anyone, it's nice to know its there....
If I remember correctly, the first piece of hardware that I "lusted" after was that tape recorder that was featured on the Home Alone movie! Oh, my for me those were the good ol' days! lol Cheers! Happy Thanksgiving ya'll!
Wow cool I still have got loads of cassettes that I wanted to convert into mp3 but never knew how to do it. Years ago I transferred stuff from CDs to cassette and recorded cassettes from other decks. That is really cool stuff Chris, ta!
Almost 40 years ago I got a GE tape recorder for Christmas and I went around as "Walter Concrete" (Cronkite) interviewing people. I also secretly taped phone calls with my dad, step-sister, step-brother, etc by holding the mic to the ear piece of the phone. It was the Age of Nixon. I still have the tapes. Yes, decoran234, I know it's illegal.... but after 40 years I think the Statutes of Limitations have run out and expired.
My 1st cassette purchase was Rush- Fly By Night. I played it at my Grandma's house, and she gave me a lecture about how Rock and Roll was the Devil's music. To this day, I still think she may have been right about the Devil part, (but I don't worship him, I just listen to his music). I couldn't pass up the cool white owl on the cover and taking the wrapper off like it was candy. I feel bad for this generation. If grandma were still alive, she would give the same lecture about the Devil's MP3's.
your grandma has obviously never listened to black metal. Look up the song video The Sacrilegious Scorn by Dimmu Borgir, that is the devils music. But I'm christian. What music you listen to doesn't have to affect what you believe in.
I agree, but I'll pass on the Scorn for now. Some music has a bad affect on my mood. Getting back to archiving: I have been having good results with a 24/96 M-Audio, and an old Technics cassette and turntable that were state of the art. I haven't been happy with the new products for conversion. They are all 16 bit, and I find that converting from a 24 bit file straight to MP3 gives much better results. I back up the 24 bit data on DVD. Oh, always demag and adjust azimuth on heads for best sound.
Just wanted to add that adjusting the tape heads for old tapes can give you much better high-end and/or stereo separation. They always stick 'glue' on the head screws, but they are rarely set right, and will often be out of align, causing muffled sound on playback on a different player. You can also set the screw using a reference tape. I use an MFSL copy of Imagine, 'cause I know they were sticklers about head alignment for copying. Amazing the difference it makes. Same goes for demag/cleaning.
I've recently found that extreme Goo Gone is great for extremely dirty heads that won't come clean with alcohol. But don't get it on plastic, it melts. I tried some on capstans and pinch rollers, but careful of some rollers may be damaged or dried out. Use a rubber conditioner whenever possible to keep rollers like new, otherwise tapes get eaten, and the archive process is compromised. I did all this on a deck recently and compared the difference, and I couldn't believe what I was missing.
Sound like something you want to rent just to dump all your cassette into mp3. Could you also gobble up an old tape deck and just plug the output into your sound card and get similar result!
First, I had a portable cassette tape player, which could also record with any microphone by connecting one. It also came with some cool yellow headphones. Then, I had a portable CD player. After that, when MP3 players came out, I went through 2 different ones. The first one I forgot the brand of, the 2nd one was an RCA Lyra. Then, when iPods rolled around, I first had a refurbished silver 4 GB iPod mini. After that, I had a 30 GB black 5th gen iPod, and now, I have a 2nd gen iPod Touch.
NO, this is NOT illegal. You own the property and you are merely making an archive copy of the recordings.
I did this years ago with an Sony tape deck and an audio cable to the sound board. The recordings will not be the same as what you expect from a CD, but for classic stuff that is no longer available, it is a great way to listen to your old groups, from when music actually sounded good and musicians knew how to play instruments.
Cassette culture is alive and well. Cassettes thrive in the Black metal, Noise and Punk genres. Many bands still release albums on cassettes, and many have releases that are exclusive to the cassette in 2009! Online tape distros like Tour De Garde have a ton of good shit. You can also buy blank cassettes for your demos on ebay for fairly cheap prices. Last year I bought 100 tapes without cases or covers for $30. After cover costs and label sticker, I made over $3 profit per cassette at $5 each.
Far out! I think the first significant piece of computer hardware I ever bought was a Voodoo2 3dfx Graphics Card for my old PC 486 or Pentium 166 back in the day! Cost me like $600! CRAZY I know! Good times hey...
if you have a CD Player/Cassete player with an ausdio jack you can also do this. Plug a two-way 3.5mm wire from the headphonejack to the line-in jack on your soundcard and set audacity to record from there.
You don't need any hi-tech expensive equipment like in this video to do this. Just need any cassette player (even a portable/pocket one) and just output headphone jack into your soundcard. Record. Simple. :)
Damn Chris...the first piece of technology I wanted and got was the Sony Cassette Walkman...it's the one where the radio was a cassette in case you wanted to just listen to the radio. That was my most favorite form of escape. I really loved that thing.
i dont really thing that thats the hp touch smart and it if was, i dont think chris will show that his running OS X on a PC because thats illegal, even more illegal than downloading free things
yeah because apple only allow os X to run on macs not other computers and also your legally allowed to make one copy of mac os X its some copyright law its kinda strange that macs run windows but a p.c. wont run os X (legally) but i suppose apple want you to buy the hardware aswell
My first Piece of tech i thought i couldn't live with out was an Iomega 100MB zip drive... a little while after that ... it was a Plextor 8x CD Burner...
the first super high tech thing that was bought for me was a playstation 1. my dad bought it for me. i was just delighted! i played gran turismo on it for ever. lol
oh yeah, and the question on hardware, cassette recorder, Sony Walkman was the first i bought on my own. one that i didnt buy myself was the super nintendo system when it just came out on market. i thought packman and mario was amazing.
hmn...i've been thinking, wouldnt an audio wire with male ends on both sides connected to the 'line in' on the pc and the headphone jack on the cassette player also work?
I remember my dad had a 486 dx with a cdrom and 8mb of ram that ram windows 3.1 that was an absolute top of the line in its time playing games like myst on the computer was an unparalleled visual experience for its time
and of course i could go on about all the different computer that i had or have used but those are the first other than to old apple pc that my school had, which also had some decent games on them, like that game Decent that was realy cool back in the mid 90's i think
i dont believe that i lusted over this but thr first computer that we ever got was i believe a 386 or possibly an early 486, it had a floppy drive and vga monitor. i remeber playing games like the first duke nukem, tetris, supaplex and some more classics that i dont remeber the tittles for
I remember that i lusted for the n64.before that i had the nes and snes but they just gave it too me.but for this i was lusting! also the zelda games! DROOLS
I remember when My dad bought a Pentium 2 with Windows 98 for his Job and brought it at home I was so happy, after some days I got the Mario game with a floppy and started to play with it!
I was so happy when we got our first family computer: a 386 with 40MB of hard drive, we couldn't afford a vga monitor so I had to settle for monochrome =(. I remember staying up late at night teaching myself how to use DOS ^.^;
lol i uh archive my wife admitting she cheated on the phone recorder its on mp3 now:). i just use the mic out and put it in the line in to the comp and i use audacity
Many desktop users won't need a specific USB tape deck, as their PCs will have a line in socket, but I could see this being of use to those with laptops, as they normally don't have this input, so a good niche product.
I had a nice setup. I used an old (but good condition) radio/etc and hooked it up to a good quality usb sound card. I copied all of my dad's remaining 8tracks and records and made mp3s of um for him. takes forever to do that many be he likes the final product.
Is it just me or is calling a Window's based machine a PC wrong?! PC stands for Personal Computer.. It might just be me but I think a MAC is more of a PC than a Windows based machine..
you guys still remember another console? you must insert a disc into the console, then u close it, then press play. CD player i think..a portable one. YOu guys still remember? ah..that used to be the old "mp3" where i used to listen to.
actually we don't need a dedicated cassette player like in this video to convert to mp3/wav..etc.
Almost all cassette players can do the same thing as long as we have right audio cable (stereo minijack ) and right software such as audacity..etc
I have converted a bunch of cassette tapes to digital audios just using a portable cassette player (sony walkman) .. btw the cassette in this video may be has some additional features that other players don't :)
rememberence: inside of a vacuumcleaner, I suppose
Your talk: you seems to be a good stand-alone but no info!
I use the computer-line-in and a sound-editor. Must know about (analoque) recording.

well you don't need that thing, all you need is :
-Any tape recorder or just player.
-Double audio jack cable.
-Plug the cable to the recorder/player as you would do with any headphones.
-plug the other end on your audio line in located on your computer (all pcs have one, not sure about mac)
-record with Audacity. (you might need the mp3 encoder as a separate download.

abcdnubs 2 years ago
if you have a CD Player/Cassete player with an ausdio jack you can also do this. Plug a two-way 3.5mm wire from the headphonejack to the line-in jack on your soundcard and set audacity to record from there.

MrSoupyman 2 years ago
You don't need any hi-tech expensive equipment like in this video to do this. Just need any cassette player (even a portable/pocket one) and just output headphone jack into your soundcard. Record. Simple. :)

Damn Chris...the first piece of technology I wanted and got was the Sony Cassette Walkman...it's the one where the radio was a cassette in case you wanted to just listen to the radio. That was my most favorite form of escape. I really loved that thing.

yeah because apple only allow os X to run on macs not other computers and also your legally allowed to make one copy of mac os X its some copyright law its kinda strange that macs run windows but a p.c. wont run os X (legally) but i suppose apple want you to buy the hardware aswell
gadgetboy1234 2 years ago

I remember my dad had a 486 dx with a cdrom and 8mb of ram that ram windows 3.1 that was an absolute top of the line in its time playing games like myst on the computer was an unparalleled visual experience for its time
and of course i could go on about all the different computer that i had or have used but those are the first other than to old apple pc that my school had, which also had some decent games on them, like that game Decent that was realy cool back in the mid 90's i think

I was so happy when we got our first family computer: a 386 with 40MB of hard drive, we couldn't afford a vga monitor so I had to settle for monochrome =(. I remember staying up late at night teaching myself how to use DOS ^.^;

Many desktop users won't need a specific USB tape deck, as their PCs will have a line in socket, but I could see this being of use to those with laptops, as they normally don't have this input, so a good niche product.

Really? I remember at one point seeing one sell for just under $2,000. I was angry.
greyspot00 2 years ago
I had a nice setup. I used an old (but good condition) radio/etc and hooked it up to a good quality usb sound card. I copied all of my dad's remaining 8tracks and records and made mp3s of um for him. takes forever to do that many be he likes the final product.

actually we don't need a dedicated cassette player like in this video to convert to mp3/wav..etc.
