Not really. That is normal behavior for the crabs. The one grabbing the other is merely shaking the shell until the other crab leaves his shell. Then the aggressor jumps in the vacant shell, leaving the old shell for the now naked crab.

Really it usually leaves both crabs with a better fitting shell.

once they start fighting, It's really not a good idea to stop it. you could end up hurting them worse. Shell fighting is a natural behavior and a survival mechanism. the best thing you can do is offer a lot of shells to choose from to decrease the likelihood of a shell fight.

even if they did stop the fight im sure they would only start up again. crabs are weird little things and will even get revenge on shell fights sometimes, at least thats what ive seen mine do. 2 of my jumbos hate each other and will push each other around the tank. now one comes out in the day and the other comes out at night so they never see each other except for tank cleaning day. hermit crabs have weird little minds lol

What was amazing on this tiny little Panamanian island was that it was covered with these hermit crabs. Anywhere there was shade under a tree, they covered the ground like acorns under an oak tree. Some places, the ground was covered with them in a writhing mass. Imagine a one acre tropical island with about 100,000 hermit crabs living on it...

If you guys knew ANYTHING about hermit crabs, you would know that the one shaking the other wanted the shell. The one shaking it wanted the shell but there was already a hermit in it. So they shake the other till they are forced to get out of their shell. If this happens you need to get another shell, possibly bigger, and help the crab thats 'naked' go in it...
