Well, from 1:41-1:44, Bob mentioned that he had a ship which sank which is the reason why he had those two oars. So maybe Bob swam to the island after his ship sank, and that's probably the other reason Maria and Luis didn't notice him because he was never on the island before even though the island was very small, just like Luis said at 1:32.
@hibiscusfire Wait, Bob had toe jam?? What the heck? I was just saying that since he was kicking his legs up dangerously close to Luis' face, it'd be even more annoying if his feet smelled. You saw how he was swatting him off as if to say "pee-you!", right?
@Pooleman96 hahahaha I don't know if Bob had toe jam...but you know something the cast made me feel better ... they were so real and funny...and they cared
If you listen closely at 0:55, Luis quickly changed the line. At 0:55, he was about to say, "we were on here first" but then he quickly changed the line and said, "we were on this island first."
Thank you. Maybe I was wrong because I know I started watching Sesame Street in the year 1985 so I thought this skit was filmed in the year 1986 because I remember seeing it for the first time in the year 1986.
It sure looked a little strange how Bob appeared out of nowhere onto the island, even though he said at 0:45 that he's new in the neighborhood. Bob must've swam to the island but, as soon as Bob said hi, Maria sounded like she knew him where she hasn't seen him for many years but, Luis acted like that Bob had no right to be talking to them or helping them get off the island.
Luis sure didn't sound too polite as soon as Bob came on the island. Instead of asking Bob if he knows any ideas on how they can get off the island without any ships around, he tells Bob to go away from the island. Very impolite of Luis.
Another reason why this clip will probably never be shown on TV again: Luis' impolite behavior doesn't fit in with Sesame Workshop's dumbed-down, politically correct curriculum.
Yes that's true, you're right. I know the other muppets who have been cranky are "Oscar The Grouch", "Benny Rabbit", and "Fat Blue" (who is actually named "Mr. Johnson" that was Grover's customer in Charlie's Restaurant). I know that Benny Rabbit was taken off the show, and Fat Blue/Mr. Johnson isn't seen too much on Sesame Street or he's been taken off the show since both of them were cranky muppets but, I'm not sure why Oscar The Grouch is still on the show even though he's grouchy to people
@glickmam As much as I would agree with you about them trying too hard to set a good example for the kids these days, you have to admit that he was kind of an asshole in this bit. Who'd wanna be on an island with a guy like that?
Sadly, this scene will probably never be seen on television anymore, since it doesn't fit in with Sesame Workshop's new spoonfed, dumbed-down curriculum.
Tell me about it: I watched part of a newer episode last year and turned off the TV after 10 minutes. "Brought to you by the letter P" all right...as in predictable, pathetic poppycock! ;-)
THIS clip, on the other hand, is a great example of the surreal humor I grew up seeing on the show. Even with a younger audience these days, it wouldn't hurt kids to see material like this on TV!
The last example of the nutty humor/surprise ending for sketches the show once had.

Then who would be the new Maria?

@CC927 I'd probably say whoever plays the mother on "Wizards of Waverly Place". And maybe the new Bob would be Steve Carrel.

"I'm new to the neighbourhood"?? How the hell can you not notice a stranger on a 6 ft square island?!

@hibiscusfire Agreed. And if Luis thinks THAT'S annoying enough, imagine how worse it'd be if Bob's feet smelled! LOL

He probably could have combined those 2 lines into 1 line like this:
"We were here on this island first"
happy7117 3 years ago
That true. Luis could have combined those two lines like that. (Luis sure didn't sound polite talking to Bob in an impolite way).

they moved the age range for s.s. from 2-8 from 2-4 so thats why its like that. Too many choices for other kids on cable

@glickmam but at the same time, its a natural response, even for adults who are used to a particular situation remaining inert.
