It looks like you are backfeeding into the panel. If you fail to shut off the main supply breaker, you will end up back feeding to the pole and could potentially electrocute a line worker. A 'rea' transfer switch with supply/genset interlock is recommended.
you are corect about your statement. The Main to the house must be shut off before conecting a Alt. power source or you will kill a lineman.
