This is the tune that should be Lee Michaels' number one hit...I liked this one the moment I heard it so long ago...played late nite on the local radio in L.A. It was 1967 at the time and things just seemed so far out in those days...If I could go back in time...that would be my time..
His restaurant has the name of shrimp in it from what I recall someone saying. . I think Funkychick60 has the name. . Funky Shrimp or something like that? I live in the Bay area but next time I am down there I am for sure going to check it out. The last time I saw Lee and Frosty they were running a huge system of amps lining the rear of the stage.. . . tall amps made by Acoustic. . . even the sight of the whole thing was impressive.
I saw him at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in '69 I think it was. He brought the house down with 'Hello' and 'The War'.... I just found 'The War' on YouTube here tonight. I hadn't heard it in over 40 years! FANTASTIC MUSICIAN!!! And all his drummers were killer!
Thanks for this upload! I've seen Lee & Frosty in concert long ago, but had totally forgotten this great song! Hearing it now makes it seem like yesterday & reminds me of our frame of mind (or mindless) then. What talent!! Miss em'.
@zen52 , ditto for me , first heard of Lee Michaels on wnew ny, in late 60s early 70s (pre disco) and your right his version of Stormy Monday is killer, great great Hammond B3 irgan playing,
It was Hamilton W.Watt on guitar.Gary Davis is also credited on the album. He backed up lee on organ when Lee was doing a piano or harpsicord part.Bass player is John Keski.
This was a staple on WNEW fm in NYC....during that magical time..I use to call in to request Roskoe and Zack to play it and they were so cool and did.many times.
Haven't heard this in 40 freakin years! Fantastic....I too first heard this on WNEW-FM in NY in those early days as a high school dork and suddenly felt hip because not too many folks knew about Lee....I bought the album, eventually saw him at CW Post college in 69 or 70...his version of Stormy Monday on the Hammond B3 still blows the roof off!!!
@triplettam Thx for the reply, but it was a rhetorical question. They almost blew the windows out of the Rose Palace in Pasadena in 1969. I was a roadie for Mary Butterworth, and had learned to carry a wad of cotton to use for earplugs. That got me through Mountain and West, Bruce and Laing shows, among others...
@SaveTheSharks1 Oh, I knew it was rhetorical. I couldn't help myself. Lee was the second concert I ever saw (Spirit headlined). I was right up front with that Hammond B-3, Leslies and Marshalls. Holy shit. And good 'ol Frosty. I'm a drummer and I got to know him a little bit years later. Those were great times my friend.
@funkychick60 Thanks for letting me know that. I always wondered. It was more than urban legend . It was reported in"RollinStone" and a few other trades. Of course I don't remember if they said if it was reversible or not. Sounds like it was. I know he had to stop touring (at least for a while) because of it. That probably made all the difference. If you never played in a band with a keyboard player who used a Hammond B3 played through a stack of Marshalls AND a Leslie, you might never know.
@triplettam No problem! He told me that rumor had been with him since 73, but he didnt say how it got started. Needless to say I was so happy it wasnt true!
@triplettam I had heard he had a restaurant in Venice Beach but I didn't know the name. Wonder if he is at the restaurant very often? It would be amazing to meet him (after all the times I saw him live and bought his albums in the late 60's). Lee Michaels was the first thing to play on my 4 track stereo in my VW around 1967.
@74LesPaul Would love to know the name of that restaurant. I live in San Diego and I'd be willing to make the trip. I saw him many times myself. Fantastic!
You are incorrect. Eddie Hoe did not play drums on "Hello". David Potter did. "Hello" is off the Lee Michael's "Carnival of Life" album which David Potter played drums on ALL songs except for the very last song ("My Friends"). Eddie is the drummer that was brought in to play on that song only. David Potter did not get credit for playing drums because he decided to quit the band. You can see David Potter playing "Hello" right here on YouTube. Check it out.
Wow, what a GREAT song!! I only previously had heard "Do You Know What I Mean" & the "5th" album. Apparently, I need to check out his first four releases!!
when i hear this I think of our summer of love in NYC...this song was a staple on the new fm station wnew...along with "the wind","sgt pepper","break on through",phil ochs, the doors, moby grape,"whiter shade of pale"....magical times.
ps.....that picture of the lee live album is from the ritz theatre from may of '72 from a show i worked on that was recorded for that live album that that's the cover of. and i've got to say lee was a class act as a human being.
Well, I was born in '65, so I didn't get to experience what I'm quite sure was indeed "magical times"!! As far as I'm concerned, the music from the '60's & '70's will always be the best music ever!!
@funkychick60 Thanks darlin'. Was just asking LesPaul if he knew the name. I'm going to have to go up there. Someone here stated he might be getting ready to do some shows. I'd sure love that.
@triplettam That was probably me who said that...Talked to Lee a few weeks ago, he told me he's looking for a booking agent right now. Hope he finds one soon! I can hardly wait to see him play cus I never got to.
@funkychick60 Well, you need to. He was pretty special. I can't believe someone won't take him on. There's three venues down here that haved booked acts like Blue Cheer, Sons of Champlin and many others from that era. Lee is still widely known and loved in California. Have you been to Killer Shrimp? Is it great?
Yes, probably your best bet is the Rhino Records compilation cd called Lee Michaels The Collection. It selects from all 6 of the A&M Record albums released from 1968 and 1972and is a great overview of Lee's output.

@GoodyBob PS: And with great credit to David Potter too!
GoodyBob 11 months ago
the drummer you hear playing on "Hello" is David Potter. (check out David playing "Hello" right here on YouTube) *see earlier post
i think ALL musicians should get credit for their work! Especially David Potter.
it's about time that Lee Michaels sets the record straight about David and the "Carnival of Life" album!
