Good job, although just a little choppy. Probably nerves. End of phrase chords should be held longer to give better flow and continuity to the piece. I sing in a barbershop quartet and we do this song. Great story behind the writing of the words.
i heard the man behind this hymn started out at the top in wall street, and he lost it all including his family in a boat accident. yet, through his faith he stayed in one piece.
@angusbonscott: Yeah. His name was Horatio Spafford. He lived around the time of the Great Chicago Fire. Just before it happened, he was one of the richest men in the US. His wife and four daughters were off somewhere when the fire started and destroyed basically his entire estate. Then, while he was cleaning up, the ship his family was returning on, the "Ville de Havre" (I think that's how you spell it) collided with another and sank. His wife was the only survivor from his family(out of space)
@angusbonscott (cont'd from before), and she sent him the message as soon as she could - just the words "saved alone". Alone and desolate, Mr. Spafford wrote these words as he poured out his heart to Christ. Later, Phillip Bliss set them to music, to give us what is my favorite of all the many hymns we love. You can read the story in the video description as well - I just thought I share it again, just in case someone decides not to read that. God bless you all! By the way, girls, excellent job!
Thank you for posting this. This is one of my favorite hymns and the story behind it touches me so deeply. The young women featured in this video performed it beautifully.
I hear this song first in the New Apostolic Church(in Germany)
Lyrics in german: "Wenn Friede mit Gott meine Seele durchdringt, ob Stürme auch drohen von fern, mein Herze im freudigen Glauben doch singt, mit ists wohl in dem Herrn"
Two years ago my neice was killed in a car accident. This hymn was performed by her college sisters at her school memorial. This performance reminds me. It wasn't until I returned home and Googled it that I realized the underlying message bing given to our family. It was written by a man who knew and experienced the same pain.
Thank you Margaret; I have been off YT because I am facing putting my husband in a long term care facility after a Traumatic Brain Injury. Ironically, he was injured just 3 weeks after we attended the funeral for the neice I mentioned in my previous post. Thank you again for being a conduit of God's Grace.

Really like this hymn. But I knew nothing about the author ...
Thank you for what you have written the history of this hymn.
What is the greatest faith was at Spafford! To go through so many tragedies and write about peace in the Lord ...
