@mcleanartists "Bush had higher grades than John Kerry."
And by this comment you think what? You've backed me into a corner with some deep knowledge that makes you a "winner" and me a "loser"? What kind of fucking moron are you?
The fact that John Kerry earned lower grades at Yale than George Bush (I knew this already) proves our so-called ruling class is composed of buffoons and sub-normal cretins, and it's sliding irrevocably into small gene pool territory.

Mr Wolfe, can't remember what was wrong with the Vietnam War? Let's start with the name, shall we, and call it what it really was -the US War on Indochina.
Then, perhaps we can marinate your food and spike your drinks with Dioxin aka Agent Orange. Jogging your memory yet? No? What if we burned your children with Napalm? That was a mistake, you say? Ah, good to see your memory come back.
Attitudes such as yours made the war possible in the first place and will make it possible yet again.
When Wolfe says he can't find people who know why the Vietnam War was a failure, he's proving that he isn't very good at finding smart people, NOT that the Vietnam War was in fact a success.
Maybe if Wolfe had been fighting there during the 60's instead of strutting around in white suits and slurping LSD, he'd be more cautious about spreading disinformation and encouraging amnesia.
The vietnam war was successfull in preventing the spread of communism in Asia? Wasn't the Khmer Rouge communist? We certainly didn't stop them from coming to power. There's yer critical thinking.
Really? Is this guy serious? fighting the Vietcong who overran the south in the end anyway stopped communism? Really? is that his analysis of why communism did not spread through out Asia? What a senile old man.
@CmdrTobs If you've ever been to Vietnam, you'll see the south is freer and far more prosperous than the north. And if you look like you might be an American, you'll likely receive pretty poor treatment as you go farther and farther north.
@AreThereNoMoreNames The south was always more prosperous than the north. That's because rice and other kinds of cultivation are much more successful in the fertile mekong delta of the south. The north probably could not exist without the south. That's why the '54 geneva convention splitting north from the south was intended to be temporary.
What was wrong with the Vietnam war? That's easy. 4 million people in Indochina were culled by American imperialism. Did The Vietnam war stop communism in South East Asia? No. By the end of the war, Communist North Vietnam had invaded South Vietnam, and Laos and Cambodia had been seized by Communist insurgencies.
Tom, I love you; please stop talking about politics. So much of what you say is clearly false and below your intellectual level.
I admire Tom Wolfe as a writer immensely, but I'm sure that when Bush went after Saddam Hussein in retaliation of 9/11, Osama Bin Laden was pleasantly surprised and rolling over the carpet from laughing.
t. wolfe comes across as inept and unclear. about what has 'really' transpired as american history. he is fictional writer, right? he should claim sarah palin as prodigal daughter.
Publication of his book, Back to Blood, has been postponed until 2012, My guess is that his leftist editors are working overtime to purge his manuscript from the slightest hint of racism.
A regular Portnoy's complaint wanker all right. Yet One flew over the cuckoo's nest is not his only book about being nuts, who am I to judge? Is this what a Bloomberg Republican looks like. I think he tryed to lose himself in Alaska once. A vague identification with Palin. I think the loony bin makes as much sense as studio 76 or whatever # Warhols pop art crowd.
What he wrote about the pranksters in the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test and the astronauts in The Right Stuff stands as testimony that your opinion is 100% correct. Great writer, total cunt as a person.
Sooo disappointing. TW is one of my favorite authors, so how can he defend GB's intellect? GB's favorite book was something about a worm, written when he was already "growed up." GB was not altogether an idiot, he probably has average IQ, but who ever doesn't think he was puppet mastered by Cheney is either stupid or ideologically blinded by Republicanism. For shame TW. But I do look forward to you next book. Unless its about politics. Hey, we all have weaknesses...
Who wouldn't take advantage of being a political ally of Cheney? I would! GW was smart as hell. It will take the historians to figure that out though. Arrogance and idiocy has blinded most of the public perception (though people are starting to wake up some, of late).
I've been aware and a fan of Tom Wolfe for years but I'm also aware that great artists can be terrible people personally and politically: Celine and Ezra Pound and Carl Jung flirted with fascism, Fred Astaire was a lifelong Republican, Picasso treated the women in his life terribly and so on As a person Wolfe is gentlemen but politically he is as wrong as you can be.
i meant to say dog in my last post. tom dog is what he should be called as thats what he is, a lap dog for the rich. should also have said that he is a female dog. yeah, a little bitch
No one "won" you fool, except for the private interests who tried to turn Russia into a capitalist economy overnight and made it even worse. Russia collapsed through it's own flawed inner structure. No other country had influence over that.

Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander in WWII. He was heavily involved in the planning and execution of D-Day- the massive Allied offensive that finally broke Germany's resistance. And Reagan's massive increases in military spending, combined with his outreach to America's allies, forced the Soviet Union into a death spiral from which it could never recover. Both men were and remain great patriots and great leaders.
Reagan accelerated the demise of the old guard and made Gorbachev's reforms the only viable option. Oh and as for 'w/out major conflict' the breakup of Yugoslavia led to the Serb-Croat War. Ring a bell? 4 years of hell on earth. Saw it first hand. Openness and Democracy WAS NOT THERE. Merely the absence of a controlling USSR. War crimes like that only happen when folks have been told all their lives that "It's okay, they're not really human, you can kill, rape and torture as many as you want."
Reagan dragged the USSR into a spending war which was simply a downright street-smart thing to do....pitting a surplus capitalist based economy against a faltering subsistence socialist economy and the winner is....McDonalds in Moscow.
The USSR was doomed from the begining economically. Reagan just happened to be spewing out rhetoric about bringing down the Soviets as a reformer was stepping in as leader of the USSR (Gorbachev). Gorbachev was the one that allowed for the Eastern Bloc to dissolve without major conflict. He's the one who brought openess and increased democratic and capitalistic practises into the country. Fuck Reagan.
Baurdillard had an interesting theory on why communism collapsed, he thought it was because globally our notions of either a capitalist/Communist utopias collapsed.
I love Tom Wolfe but lets be straight here, Reagan didnt win the war against communism, the communists ruined their own economy, they allowed power struggles in the party ect, they fell on their own sword. If anything Reagan lucked out.
As for his views on the wars in Vietnam and Korea unless I am mistaken both of those countries have gone communist and the whole domino theory turned out to be just capitalist paranoia.
That being said I respect wolfs right to these opinions.
Good for Wolfe. Think critically people... don't accept the relentless propaganda that George Bush (or any president) is 100% bad. Reality is much more complex. This goes for both sides.
"The Vietnam stopped the spread of communism in Asia" really REALLY. I don't see where that idea came from. If communism was going to spread in Asia it would have. What did the Vietnam war do to stop it? Quite a headscratcher.
But WTF? Claiming no one remembers why they were against the Vietnam war is dumb. I remember. So does everyone I know. Why does Mr. Wolf say something so easily prover wrong?
I too really enjoyed his early work. I wish I had never seen this interview. It tarnishes the memories I have of his work. If he is such a dick how much of what he wrote can be relied on as the historical documentary I took it to be ?
Almost everything he says shows that objective fact has no influence on what comes out of his mouth. Very sad.
2.52 'we haven't been attacked since'. You haven't been attacked before either. It is not like 9/11 proved that you were in a war, and that something else was waiting to happen. It was an isolated event, and even a conspicuous inside job, and you wouldn't been attacked any more had to gone to Bush's wars or not.
teemuruskeepaa ... you continue to show your lack of knowledge in your postings. This was NOT an isolated event, not only has the US been attached before by Al-Qaeda on US soil, but the World Trade center itself had been attack previously!! The World Trade Center was bombed on February 26, 1993. And what justification do you have for believing the US would not be attached again? Al-Qaeda goal is to destroy Israel and the US - how do you think they are going to do this? By economic sanctions?
teemuruskeepaa ... I don't want to talk politics with you, because you can NOT make a good case for your view points. My postings are factual and logically - not emotional, certainly not with negative emotions. You are the one using words like "loser, whateva" and "holler." You provide no evidence for your inaccurate comments. You cannot disput any contrary point that I have made against you, which is shown in your responses by trying to attack me rather than my trying to defend your comments.
teemuruskeepaa ... Once again, your comment is nothing other than a personal attach against me. You provide no validity to your view point. Don't you see that this does nothing but looks bad on you and you narrow minded thoughts? The best option you have is to keep your comments to yourself.
The Kool-Aid drinking gregarian masses in America are quick to yell "Bush sucks" out of habit whenever his name is mentioned after they hear it on their Myspace bulletins. No such argument holds as much credibility as the defense of Bush by the experienced, educated Tom Wolfe.
what the hell? is this man going senile? most of americans, including the rest of the world, recognize bush for the disaster he is, and tom is still sniffing at his throne? sad. i always liked mailer better anyway.
I'm only slightly older than the twentysomething tools who get all their news from MSNBC and Comedy Central, with "Yes, We Can!" stickers all over their Subarus.
at least the Obama supporters can claim they were young and naive some time in the future. what's your excuse BoyGenteel? were you watching nothing but Fox News the past 8 years?
Regan ended the cold war? Huh, I thought that was the efforts of the common man in the Soviet union to bring down communism with the help of Good ol' Gorbi being willing to help birth the changes in Poland as well as back home in the USSR.
According to what I've read, American, British, and Saudi Arabian financial players colluded to keep world oil prices below the Soviet production cost, with the sole aim of destroying the Soviet's one profitable exportable commodity, and hence bankrupting their economy. The source was the book, "Big Oil", but I forget the author.
@lydiasaintjohn Forgive me, but what an incredibly naive view. I lived through the end of the USSR - trust me, there was no "efforts of the common man in the Soviet union to bring down communism". Not even close. Not even in the same zipcode.

A few points to consider.
1. Eisenhower did not win the war. He was in joint command of the allied forces in the EU.
2. Further it could be argued that nobody WINS a war, you only seek not to LOSE it.
3. Reagan did not win the cold war. He was on watch when the structure came down. Reagan was part of winning certainly but THE winner.
finally Tom, stick to fiction you do it well.
But frankly your politics are in the toilet and your History requires remedial attention.

Heads out of the sand guys, out of the sand.

It's just further proof: rich people don't give a fuck how or how many people die, be they American or foreign poor.

I'm only slightly older than the twentysomething tools who get all their news from MSNBC and Comedy Central, with "Yes, We Can!" stickers all over their Subarus.

at least the Obama supporters can claim they were young and naive some time in the future. what's your excuse BoyGenteel? were you watching nothing but Fox News the past 8 years?
historywillabsolve 2 years ago
Nope. I watch various outlets. Do you?
