In the song at the end, Glados mentions deleting her only friend. You're real, and can't be deleted, she's probably talking about her attempts to delete Caroline, who she spent her entire existence with. Or so goes my own crack-pot theory.* *subject to revision. (this was brought to my attention on reddit, i take no credit for this theory and apologize if it spoiled the story, i assumed if you looked up this song, you had already beat the game)

Glados wanted to kill Chell with the turrets at the elevator, as letting her escape would have been a weakness, but Caroline intervened and instead sang the song (hence "my pretty dear child").

Glados tried to delete Caroline at the end, so she could lose the weakness of a conscience, but it didn't work, and Caroline was split to be a part of all the computers in Aperture, specifically the turrets (maybe some programming by the engineers to ensure that she couldn't be removed, as per Cave's wishes?).

Scientists who survived the neurotoxin removed Caroline's memory to prevent any further freak-outs, and added the morality cores and other stuff to Glados to control her. She was taken prisoner and Glados made her do the forms and paperwork, as regulation would have demanded, hence the "subject refused to answer" stuff.

Bring your daughter to work day (the time of the neurotoxin / Glados coming online) was in 1998, making Chell be something like 10-15 years old, which is consistent with her ability to make a potato battery for a project. Upon seeing Chell, Glados freaks out because of her memories of Chell, releasing neurotoxin, killing everyone. Caroline saves Chell, and lets her be kept for testing. Making Chell be about 20 / early 20's for portal 1, which happened ~10 years after Glados came online.

Caroline would have given birth to Chell shortly after Cave's death, but due to Cave's command of doing anything to make Caroline take over Aperature, employee's took Chell away from her, and one of the employees raised her, which is why she was at bring you daughter to work day. Hence why Chell has no reactions to hearing Caroline, seeing Caroline, or learning that Caroline was part of Glados. Also why there are all the orphan references.

Caroline is Chell's mother. Cave is not the father. Cave was significantly older than Caroline (who was his secratary), and he died around 1980 or so. Cave and Caroline couldn't have been both the parents, or why would Chell be mixed?

Yes it'd be interesting for us to see what happened to her, but that's the beauty of Valve. We decide. We make up the ending. People need to let a good thing rest.

@xxtyxx I think the Turret Opera also can make people cry. You can tell that Caroline was who GLADOS was meant to be. And, you can tell, she is sad to let go of her child. Sure her child killed her, but secretly, she loves her child, for doing it, with science. And, then, you just get a feeling she'll do the same for the test subjects that make it so far next time.
