@STOPTHEEU I find it hilarious that you think 'New Labour' were socialists. Tony Blair was the logical extension of Thatcher and Cameron has continued in that vein. As the saying goes...we're having a party when Thatcher dies.
@david030491 Interesting view. Often in politics there is no right or wrong view however we all have the right (or at least should) to say our views. I think Thatcher was a good PM although her support of joining the EEC was a big mistake. Blair, Brown and Cameron all support/supported continued membership of the EU and all three promised us referendums and failed to give them.
I think they were traitors. Thatcher on the other hand regretted her stance on the EEC.
@david030491 Tony Blair was not a real labour politician. He should have reversed almost everything Mrs. Thatcher did, but he didn`t. And that to me is a damn shame!
You're not seriously comparing the Nazis to Labour are you? A far-right fascist organisation to a centre-left socialdemocratic party. Great comparison that.
@Udany147 Hang on a second... NSDAP national SOCIALIST German workers party.
Try comparing the USSR (Communism) to the NSDAP (Fascism)
Thats far right to far left, yet they have a lot in common really.
Both totalitarian dictatorships which oppressed their own people, both imperialistic, both murdered millions of people, both took away freedoms such as free speech and both claimed to be socialist. So why shouldn't we be able to compare Labour to the Nazis?
@STOPTHEEU I knew this was coming; the 'socialist' bit. It was 'socialist' in name only; any remaining socialist elements from the early "German workers party" were successfully purged during the Night of the Long Knives.
Hitler was not a socialist (Marx was a Jew; most communists in Germany at that time, e.g. Rosa Luxemburh, were Jews) and did NOT turn Germany into a socialist state. Not much more more to be said.
@Udany147 Most of politics is opinion based. However in this scenario I am trying to point out how Socialism is used as a mask for extremists. Take a look at what Hitler did in office. A lot of rights were suspended after the Reichstag fire. People to this day question who was behind the fire. Then look at what Blair did in office. A lot of rights were suspended after 911. People again question who was behind it.
There are a few similarities if you do your research.
@STOPTHEEU I would appreciate if you could list the "lot of rights suspended after 911"in Britain and how it affected our real lives. Comparing Blair to Hitler is preposterous as is your connecting opposing socialism as a disguise for extremists. 20th century communism and its "achievements" is way over a justification for all of us to dread socialists and comunists.
@Udany147 Try to get a hold of Hitler's first official speech to the Nazi Party in 1919. The subject was "How to defeat Capitalism". Like most people in Vienna at the time Hitler was heavily influenced by Socialism and by other socialist by-products that combined social speech with proto-totalitarian government proposals. The rift between Nazis and Communists stem from their opposite views on internationalism and nationalism.
Hitler had a lot in common with fascist Thatcher, including anti communism and being pro capitalism. Just ask Krupp, Hugo Boss and IG Farben about Hitlers capitalist policies.
@misled1982 It serves her right, she deserves everything she gets. There will be many, many people celebrating and keeping her grave wet for her. Horrible, horrible woman.

I pay a fortune in council tax every month and all I have to show for it is getting my bins emptied and big holes all over the roads. Why shouldn't the people who actually use the council services pay more?
i don't like seeing her walking out of the car towards the doorstep but i love it when she turned around and waved to the crowd! and i want to remember her that way only!
Margaret Thatcher was the greatest leader Britain ever had, she is respected throughout the world. Without her UK would be in the land of dinosaurs still producing coal nobody needs, certainly not those who care about the environment. From an Italian.
Nice Lady Thatcher got a chance to say goodbye to Downing Street in more tranquil times. The traitors who stabbed her in the back from her own party all those years ago were fools. It has taken so long for The Conservatives to get another half way decent leader. If I were David Cameron, i'd watch youtube vids of Maggie often. She would attack opposition policies, euro nuts, and other such nonsense. I don't remember her making personal remarks like 'dinosaur' for example about anybody.
Strange how Left Wingers always claim that they are not Left or Right but Centrists, and then make derogatory remarks about Right Wingers. They do not have the courage to admit what they are
Pitty the IRA never blew her up at brighton maybe the public party would have been cut short tory huns should all be shot the paddys or the argies won't forget her crimes
@amywinehouze oh get off your high horse! Why would it be Baroness Thatcher to me? I couldn't care less about the woman and I'm neither left or right wing so give over with your unfounded, idiotic branding and name calling!
To all you anti thatchers watch the film the iron lady and tell me what you have achieved in your life that is anything remotely near becoming the first national female leader of a western country she is the first and only female prime minister that is an achievement in its self!
@gramule great people have serious illnesses whatever your view is of her is your right of opinion but with respect please don't disrespect God like that. Thank you.
@greenbutterfly101 point taken. apologies. ok, let me put it in a secular way then, so as not to be disrespectful of/to your god: what goes around comes around, you reap what you sow, be careful of your actions in your earlier life, you are always laying down the building blocks for your future. no man is an island. enough said. ps i cannot recommend too highly 'the iron lady'. meryl streep is a veritable tour de force. worth a look, and plenty, plenty of food for thought in it. hope this helps.
Thatcher is guilty of the following: No more school milk, VAT up 8-17.5%, consumer credit spending bubble, poll tax, riots, 2 recessions, QUANGOs, Falklands war, crime rate doubled, over-privatisation, corruption, tried to sink the Open University, media manipulation, monetarism, illegal arms deals, widening of rich/poor and north/south divides, rampant racism, destruction of local democracy. I could go on for ages without running out of steam...
Theres that woman that allowed 10 Northern Irish hunger strikers to starve to death. Oh yeah thats the same person that created a bloodbath in the falklands and blew up a ship after the war was long over.
Amazing to see anybody who could look at that scumbag in a good light.
@HappyPeopleEatCows It's not her fault the hunger strikers died. She gave them food. they just decided not to eat it. And she didn't create the bloodbath in the Falklands. Argentina invaded the Falklands, not Margaret Thatcher. And when the Belgrano was sunk, we were still at war with Argentine. I don't know what you expect to happen in a war, but you usually blow up the enemy.
@J4K31 No she didn't. If Labour were in power, the poor would be more poor, provided the rich were less rich. You don't create wealth like that. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk.
@Z1GGYK3V labour were the ones who introduced the NHS (free healthcare), the welfare state and even blair started up lots of housing projects whilst he was in power
if the tories had controlled the whole of the 19th century, there'd be no NHS, no welfare state and no cheap council housing
thank god for labour, or else we'd be back in dickens' times
@J4K31 You can't deny that the trade unions had the country to ransom and that Thatcher was a strong PM when we needed her but also Labour has done alot of great work under PM's such as Attlee and sometimes Blair. But Thatcher's economic plans were good and made this country stronger and richer. You can't deny her Plans were good ultimately for the UK regardless, but however she'll remain controversial but i believe she did more good than harm and did even more so on the world stage.
@eddieoxford Thatcher did more good than harm? Thatcher destroyed the working class. She destroyed the public sector, the health sector and education. It was because of Thatcher that we had consumer credit spending bubble, poll tax, riots, 2 recessions, Falklands war, crime rate doubled, over-privatisation, corruption, tried to sink the Open University, media manipulation, monetarism, illegal arms deals, widening of rich/poor and north/south divides and rampant racism.
@Keelz7196 Exactly. People don't like hearing the truth. Not one person has challenged me on anything I've had to say and so they either flag or dislike my comment because they can't argue with my point. They know it's right.
@realot1 The trades unions never gave a crap about the workers who they represented, they only ever used them as political cannon fodder and to sabotage the British economy, half of the union leaders were on the pay roll of the KJB.
@aeronuk1 yes because it wasnt the trade unions who pushed for health and safety in the workplace saving saving countless lives. It wasnt the unions who pushed for maternity leave. It wasnt the unions that got us paid anual leave and holiday entitlement. It wasnt the unions that pushed for workers compensation. Without the unions we'd still be in the victorian workhouses where the tories want us. KJB??
@realot1 All Levels of household income for all families were higher at the end of Thatcher than when she came to power, the country became richer on the whole. How can you even say the unions had their members, they were all in it for themselves and bigger pay which was crippling the nation. Thatcher never backed down and we would of certainly sold ourselves to Europe via the Euro / EMU and Argentina if we had a Labour pm at the time. I read the Guardian, Independent and the Times. :)
@eddieoxford Tell the unemployed and their children that grew up in poverty that they were better off thanks to thatcher. Jesus christ how can people say these hollow statements without taking into account the record high unemployment and decimation of public services. Unions in it for themselves? Look at my previous comment to @aeronuk1 to see how selfish the unions are do you think we would have been given them rights by the likes of thatcher??? Yes didnt think so
@eddieoxford Yes the union wanted better pay for its workers and why not? You jut said we were richer thanks to thatcher (your words) so why not give the workers more money? HAHA the irony of you saying she wouldnt of sold ourselves to europe yet she didnt mind stripping and selling everything else this country had. Jesus the same Times that ran a poll stating whether Ed miliband was too ugly to be PM? Wouldnt wipe me ares with that murdoch dribble
@realot1 Because the mines made no profit and were asking for higher wages, it's ridiculous.
The mines were funded by tax payers money, this meant that by staying open and making losses, not only were they wasting money but in doing so penalizing the majority of society who paid tax.
I hate to defy your logic, BUT if we went by it we would run out of money and end up in a worser state than Greece. It's no good spending tax payers money on things that aren't worth while.
@ForeverComplaining Ridicuolous? How do you know the mines made no profit? Where are your figures? Because it is fact that some mines were profitable but yes some wern't. But lets go off what you say you say it is wrong for us to subsidise non profit industries so why are we not attacking the heavily subsidised industry of farming then??? Is it because the farmers tend to be tories? Was it worth while having 3million on the dole?....
@ForeverComplaining was it worth deonising and destroying whole communities through the murdoch run press all because they wanted to save their jobs? Run out of money? We have no money are you really that ignorant we are in a far worse financial state that Greece we have far more severe debt the only reason we are not being threatened with higher intrest rates is because we are going ahead with cuts in jobs wages an rights which is what the big corporations want.
@realot1 we have high debt, that is true, but the difference between us and Greece is that we have sectors (primarily the financial and service sectors) that are of world-class standard and that keep propping up GDP. Greece not only has a mediocre, mainly tourist-driven economy, but the Greek government have great difficulty in collecting taxes due to poor enforcement on business owners and corrupt politicians. The cuts are merely saving face for the EU for the most part.
@Overfiend002 I have to disagree the difference is that the Greek people aren't willing to pay for the mistakes of the so called 'world class' financial sector and good on them its just a shame we do not show the same resistance. As for poor enforcement of tax collecting, when the likes of vodafone are getting away with not paying billions in tax I think you need to look at our country first.
@realot1 The greeks are protesting because they have a large public sector and quite obviously don't want to lose their jobs and see their wealth sold off to the country's European creditors. Totally due to the actions of their government and of the EU, I might add. I think you're confusing sovereign debt here with the credit crisis. This is a problem that's been festering for a very long time and is mostly to do with their adoption of the euro. It's a currency that only really works..
@realot1 ..in favour of countries like France and Germany and leaves other countries with weaker economies uncompetitive against those economies because their currency is too strong to export. Combine this also with the debt market mis-pricing as greek bonds were sold in euro to investors at a higher credit rating than they should've had and at a higher value than what they should've been (bonds in drachma would've been cheaper and less of a liability to creditors)
@realot1 you seem to be seriously missing the point about what I said regarding tax collection. The UK wealthy do pay a lot of tax generally (despite whatever sensationalist story about vodafone, philip green, whatever). That's something the airheads who write the Guardian like to forget about when it's convenient, but when I talk about Greece, I am talking about widespread inefficiencies of collection among all businesses. Even things like cafés and restaurants.
@realot1 Also, when politicians are up for re-election, they relax collection policies in the hope of gaining more votes. When compared to this kind of corruption, the UK are by comparison, a shining example.
@eddieoxford I dislike Thatcher's extreme individualism, but I think that Britain needed a Conservative PM who would accept the changing times (c.f., eclipsing of British geopolitical influence) and so recapture a national, rather than imperial, outlook if the country was to continue to be taken seriously. True, Thatcher wasn't quite a "Cavalier Tory," and Britain changed under her mandate. Not, in every way, for the better in my opinion, but in many ways it was necessary.
@J4K31 "labour were the ones who introduced the NHS (free healthcare), "
Not quite. An embryo healthcare system had started in the 19th century and by the 1930s local authorities were running most hospitals and medical schemes. War time legislation increased the provision of state healthcare and by 1945 it was accepted by all parties that a National Health service was just around the corner. The big question was who would run it and how it was to be funded. Broadly speaking, the Tories wanted
@oarfrost the service to be run and paid or by the local authorities and the Labour party wanted it to be run by central government and paid for by the employers. In the end the NHS was run by central government and paid by the ordinary working man.
@J4K31 Back then, Britain was the greatest nation that had ever ruled the earth - with the planet's largest ever empire. It was leading in technology, science, education - everything.
These days poor people live off the state and do nothing with their lives.
I support benefits for those who really really need it. But, it is not a long-term gift. The state cannot support its people by giving them money. It can be a cushion, but not a third leg.
@J4K31 I never usually feel hatred, but make an exception for that witch. I do not wish death on her though. I want her to live for many years in unspeakable agony, writhing in pain and suffer, just as thousands suffered under her reign.
@Kelly14UK Are you actually going to try and make a point for a change? Or are you going to start blaming Thatcher for your inability to communicate without using three-letter acronyms?
here is an example of 2 british prime minsters ..one with balls and the other on is david cameron

Amazing to see anybody who could look at that scumbag in a good light.
HappyPeopleEatCows 1 month ago
@HappyPeopleEatCows It's not her fault the hunger strikers died. She gave them food. they just decided not to eat it. And she didn't create the bloodbath in the Falklands. Argentina invaded the Falklands, not Margaret Thatcher. And when the Belgrano was sunk, we were still at war with Argentine. I don't know what you expect to happen in a war, but you usually blow up the enemy.

thank god for labour, or else we'd be back in dickens' times

@realot1 The trades unions never gave a crap about the workers who they represented, they only ever used them as political cannon fodder and to sabotage the British economy, half of the union leaders were on the pay roll of the KJB.
aeronuk1 1 month ago
@aeronuk1 yes because it wasnt the trade unions who pushed for health and safety in the workplace saving saving countless lives. It wasnt the unions who pushed for maternity leave. It wasnt the unions that got us paid anual leave and holiday entitlement. It wasnt the unions that pushed for workers compensation. Without the unions we'd still be in the victorian workhouses where the tories want us. KJB??
realot1 1 month ago
@realot1 All Levels of household income for all families were higher at the end of Thatcher than when she came to power, the country became richer on the whole. How can you even say the unions had their members, they were all in it for themselves and bigger pay which was crippling the nation. Thatcher never backed down and we would of certainly sold ourselves to Europe via the Euro / EMU and Argentina if we had a Labour pm at the time. I read the Guardian, Independent and the Times. :)
eddieoxford 1 month ago
@eddieoxford Tell the unemployed and their children that grew up in poverty that they were better off thanks to thatcher. Jesus christ how can people say these hollow statements without taking into account the record high unemployment and decimation of public services. Unions in it for themselves? Look at my previous comment to @aeronuk1 to see how selfish the unions are do you think we would have been given them rights by the likes of thatcher??? Yes didnt think so
realot1 1 month ago
@eddieoxford Yes the union wanted better pay for its workers and why not? You jut said we were richer thanks to thatcher (your words) so why not give the workers more money? HAHA the irony of you saying she wouldnt of sold ourselves to europe yet she didnt mind stripping and selling everything else this country had. Jesus the same Times that ran a poll stating whether Ed miliband was too ugly to be PM? Wouldnt wipe me ares with that murdoch dribble
realot1 1 month ago
@realot1 Because the mines made no profit and were asking for higher wages, it's ridiculous.
The mines were funded by tax payers money, this meant that by staying open and making losses, not only were they wasting money but in doing so penalizing the majority of society who paid tax.
I hate to defy your logic, BUT if we went by it we would run out of money and end up in a worser state than Greece. It's no good spending tax payers money on things that aren't worth while.
ForeverComplaining 1 month ago
@ForeverComplaining Ridicuolous? How do you know the mines made no profit? Where are your figures? Because it is fact that some mines were profitable but yes some wern't. But lets go off what you say you say it is wrong for us to subsidise non profit industries so why are we not attacking the heavily subsidised industry of farming then??? Is it because the farmers tend to be tories? Was it worth while having 3million on the dole?....
realot1 1 month ago
@ForeverComplaining was it worth deonising and destroying whole communities through the murdoch run press all because they wanted to save their jobs? Run out of money? We have no money are you really that ignorant we are in a far worse financial state that Greece we have far more severe debt the only reason we are not being threatened with higher intrest rates is because we are going ahead with cuts in jobs wages an rights which is what the big corporations want.
realot1 1 month ago
@realot1 we have high debt, that is true, but the difference between us and Greece is that we have sectors (primarily the financial and service sectors) that are of world-class standard and that keep propping up GDP. Greece not only has a mediocre, mainly tourist-driven economy, but the Greek government have great difficulty in collecting taxes due to poor enforcement on business owners and corrupt politicians. The cuts are merely saving face for the EU for the most part.
Overfiend002 1 month ago
@Overfiend002 I have to disagree the difference is that the Greek people aren't willing to pay for the mistakes of the so called 'world class' financial sector and good on them its just a shame we do not show the same resistance. As for poor enforcement of tax collecting, when the likes of vodafone are getting away with not paying billions in tax I think you need to look at our country first.
realot1 1 month ago
@realot1 The greeks are protesting because they have a large public sector and quite obviously don't want to lose their jobs and see their wealth sold off to the country's European creditors. Totally due to the actions of their government and of the EU, I might add. I think you're confusing sovereign debt here with the credit crisis. This is a problem that's been festering for a very long time and is mostly to do with their adoption of the euro. It's a currency that only really works..
Overfiend002 1 month ago
@realot1 ..in favour of countries like France and Germany and leaves other countries with weaker economies uncompetitive against those economies because their currency is too strong to export. Combine this also with the debt market mis-pricing as greek bonds were sold in euro to investors at a higher credit rating than they should've had and at a higher value than what they should've been (bonds in drachma would've been cheaper and less of a liability to creditors)
Overfiend002 1 month ago
@realot1 you seem to be seriously missing the point about what I said regarding tax collection. The UK wealthy do pay a lot of tax generally (despite whatever sensationalist story about vodafone, philip green, whatever). That's something the airheads who write the Guardian like to forget about when it's convenient, but when I talk about Greece, I am talking about widespread inefficiencies of collection among all businesses. Even things like cafés and restaurants.
Overfiend002 1 month ago
@realot1 Also, when politicians are up for re-election, they relax collection policies in the hope of gaining more votes. When compared to this kind of corruption, the UK are by comparison, a shining example.
Overfiend002 1 month ago
@realot1 but even that doesn't mean much, since government spending still increases in real terms.

Broadly speaking, the Tories wanted
oarfrost 2 months ago
@oarfrost the service to be run and paid or by the local authorities and the Labour party wanted it to be run by central government and paid for by the employers. In the end the NHS was run by central government and paid by the ordinary working man.
oarfrost 2 months ago
@J4K31 Back then, Britain was the greatest nation that had ever ruled the earth - with the planet's largest ever empire. It was leading in technology, science, education - everything.
These days poor people live off the state and do nothing with their lives.
I support benefits for those who really really need it. But, it is not a long-term gift. The state cannot support its people by giving them money. It can be a cushion, but not a third leg.
