@mildredmoira that's just dumb. everything joe wouldn't stand for. if 7 don't like the music, then they can go elsewhere and be happy. let us be happy here. no murder anywhere, not even for a damn thumbs up.
@mildredmoira LMAO ironic that you would make such a comment, when this song is clearly ANTI murder and actually deals with the disturbingly casual way people think and talk about it.
I love the ringing, bell-like guitars at the start and the anticipation you get from the drums then they go into rocking from the belling guitars...that's one of the things I love about The Clash - the songs always have so many change-ups, the syncopation between the time changes, the guitar styles (especially exquisite in this) and the vocal stylings of our sainted Joe - my god, was there ever such a creative, effective singer and, what would you say, sounder? Witness the end of London Calling.
@inchwormgreen Can you tell me why Mick Jones was sacked? Jones and Strummer seemed to synch so well.... I saw an interview video where Joe said he regretted breaking up the band: I didn't know it was firing MICK JONES! I've also seen a vid of Mick from recent days, he's balding, looks old but is teaching a class & he is so obviously enjoying it, big smile. Warms my heart he's doing okay; chills my heart Joe isn't. What a fucking tragic loss to the world.
@chrstnlmllr51 yes i as well wish joe was still here on the earth :(. but if i remember correctly it was because A combination of musical differences, a lack of punctuality, and band infighting
@inchwormgreen Ah- now I remember! In that interview where Joe said he wished he hadn't broken up The Clash I DO remember something about tardiness and it wasn't just a half hour either, as I recall. Such a pity. Sounds like Mike was in full rebellion, with the tardiness to show disrespect. I wonder if he was pulling for more standard love songs like Stand By Me, which I love but wouldn't like a lot of it. Can't image Joe would want Clash Lite. But I love Mick, always so dorky but so talented.
Somebody was murdered, you might as well have been Strummer. 50 years too young, not a day passes that I don't miss you. I feel like you were murdered, but what was it you said? "There's something quite good about coming, saying your bit and then gong. I quite like that." Maybe you felt it was time, but I don't. RIP Strummer.
@bioshockt Well-said but why do you say it might as well have been Strummer who was murdered? Just curious because the thought has often crossed my mind, esp watching those early vids and ESP the Tom Snyder ones that Joe moved so fast, felt so deeply, put so much emotion into his performances, he burnt himself out early, god damn it. We needed him. But do you know something different?
@chrstnlmllr51 I guess I feel that he was taken far too early. Someone like Joey Ramone, I'm of course sad he died but he lived a good life. He was nearly blind by the end there, he had his issues medically, he'd been through so much, then he made that one last album saying, "Its ok, I'm happy to go. I've had a good time" Its sad yes, but in its own way its ok. Joe though, it might as well have been he was murdered. It wasn't his time, instead of going when ready, he was taken. Like being killed
@bioshockt Yeah, plus Joey Ramone, no offense to his place in punkdom, was a lightweight compared to the towering talent of Joe Strummer. Like they say, The Clash: The Only Band That Matters. My God, I'm listening to Ghetto Defender right now, what a brilliant layered song of insight. Even the title is awesome.
One thing I just thought of, which may soothe your pain a bit - Joe went fast, no prolonged, painful death like Joey. I love your quote from Joe. He said what was profound and true.
@chrstnlmllr51 I wouldn't say Joey was a lightweight, since without him punk wouldn't be what it is, but he definitely didn't have Strummers staying power. For both of them, their last albums were some of their best. Adios Amigos a perfect farewell for the Ramones. Streetcore only felt like the beginning for Joe though, a new chapter, such a perfect album. I know Joe passed quickly, which to me almost makes it worse. I wouldn't have wanted him to suffer, but I think he would've fought on.
@chrstnlmllr51 I'm sure he would have. I've met people who met Joe, and they all seem to say he was really a nice guy. Despite the business he was in, music, he actually had a soul. Something so few in the music industry have. He would have continued to fight. It really is like he was murdered.
@siouxise82 you met him the other day? lucky fook! Good for you tho, I love everything I've ever heard from him. I'll have to make it an effort to meet him now fosho cool youtube name btw
@MrBeatlesfan41 Me too, Mr Beatles Fan - I'm a George Harrison and Joe Strummer & The Clash fan myself. Thinking of changing my username to, uh, Georgia Clashson.....no, too hard to say. Clashia Georgison. Maybe. Maybe not, too disrespectful to each towering talent. LOL
It is amazing how careful Mr.Jones were in dealing with the Nick Cave school of thought, and the confirmatory cry of "Buddha" gives us all hope for a future none would redouble in favour of a past dead & gone.
I grew up with the Clash ever since I was a little kid, and I fucking love them.
This is truly one of the greatest songs I have ever heard, and if you don't believe me when I tell you this, may I ask you to try listening to the studio version of this song?
@KrupaDrums Actually the CLASH MK 2 live shows were well received. Anyone just has to listen to any tracks from 1984/85 to see that they were GOOD band. What they should have done was call themself something different to avoid comparison.
@PBANDSNOW OK, you made me watch it again and again...Pete and Joe definitely had their heads together at :11; at 3:11 or 12 I see Mick's eyes flash but ? Is Joe singing something that clued him in? Whatever, it's a good story and I enjoyed every sec of re-watching. Still so sad though
@afzoomie67 I thought @PBANDSNOW was kidding in a black humor way that Joe and Paul were discussing firing Mick, then that Mick looked over and was suspicious and and then got fired the next day. When I watched a few times I could see how he made it up. But he says it's the truth. I don't know how he could know but there it is! Could be true. Certainly it's true Mick got the boot.
The thing is that at the time you came out of a gig knowing it had been great but this was NORMAL - there were so many great Clash gigs. You just left is a sweat-soaked haze.
When you go through clash albums there is so many classics, not many bands that i sit there thinking 'FUCK ME HOW MANY GOOD TUNES' Beatles are one of them (For the 'diehardpunkfan1977' who hates anything except punk---SERIOUSLY CHECK THE BEATLES MATE) and the clash. Most artists are hit and miss, great singles/bad albums but Joe and Mick written some of the greatest songs of all time!
@Esc8TheF8te It had just crossed my mind that The Clash were the only inheritors to the Beatles creativity but then I thought, no, how can you compare them, the Beatles seem so much less dangerous. Then I read this and I thought again, about the Beatles in Germany early on and McCartney ripping Helter Skelter and about John Lennon taking on the FBI, George fighting for space, "artistic differences" breaking them up too. I think you got it right. Noice user name, BTW
this is amazing. pure musical genius. i wish i was around when they were about so i could hear them live, but i guess it says something about how awesome the clash were that 16 year olds are still listening and loving them to this day. their music will live forever.

I also seent he Ramones. I was cklass of 96 so we caught a revival of this great stuff and many acts were still in tour. I missed the Clash show in Seattle and have been drunk ever since, pissed.
Lefty singers are very adept at using music to engineer the ideas of young people to the extent of brainwashing. Is this why Labour MPs are so keen to fund special recording studios with public money?
Let's take a glimpse behind the scenes of the latest recording sessions of my own Labour MP Johnathan Leftwinger!
Paste title into bar: LEFT WING RECORD MAKERS AND HEART BREAKERS!
what year was sandinista released? it sounds really good but on a joe strummer documentary on the sundance channel (if i heard him right) he said it didn't sell well and he lamented something about this album.
1981 it didnt sell well but The Clash gave up all their royalties so they could make it a triple , so they never made a dink from it, thats dedication.
classic vh1 aired some of the 1983 US festival in november but only once and didd't repeat it that month and i never saw the clash on it or i didn't record the complete show.
tons of people were at the US festival but few know about it compared to woodstock or live aid.
There should NEVER be! They were in their own fucking league and played by their own rules-something most artists and people are jealous of and rightfully so.
Their music is immensely liberating and inspiring as we all know.

I also seent he Ramones. I was cklass of 96 so we caught a revival of this great stuff and many acts were still in tour. I missed the Clash show in Seattle and have been drunk ever since, pissed.

what a band.. - THE band!
saw them around the time this was recorded ('83 - combat rock tour) @ cape cod coliseum in mass. never forgot the buzz & energy.
that weekend, elvis costello played the same venue touring for "punch the clock" - another great album from him...

Yeah, I was wondering that too,...it wouldn't be a Vantage would it? The headstock kind of looks like it could be. Great band eh?!!!

Paste title into bar: LEFT WING RECORD MAKERS AND HEART BREAKERS!

that's true, they made it a triple album...in order to get out of their cbs contract...way to fight the bullies!

One of the best songs on SANDINISTA!
A perfect example of why the Clash were so important. Thier songs meant so much.

what year was sandinista released? it sounds really good but on a joe strummer documentary on the sundance channel (if i heard him right) he said it didn't sell well and he lamented something about this album.
The096757 2 years ago
I believe Sandinista was released in 1980 as a triple album set.
Sicilianforlife 2 years ago
1981 it didnt sell well but The Clash gave up all their royalties so they could make it a triple , so they never made a dink from it, thats dedication.

@STRUMMER772003
classic vh1 aired some of the 1983 US festival in november but only once and didd't repeat it that month and i never saw the clash on it or i didn't record the complete show.
tons of people were at the US festival but few know about it compared to woodstock or live aid.

Funny how all the bands today(i like a bunch of them)all look silly compared..over styled, over lit, over done...except for maybe Glasvegas...

Is it just me or has anyone ever noticed that there is no Clash tribute band?
All the tribute bands make a mockery of the real thing.
envaneo 2 years ago
Search Youtube...there's lots of them.
jessem131 2 years ago
There should NEVER be! They were in their own fucking league and played by their own rules-something most artists and people are jealous of and rightfully so.
Their music is immensely liberating and inspiring as we all know.

@envaneo
I think on west coast, there is a tribute band called Clash City Rockers.
istanbul39 2 years ago
I'll check them out but i agree with japan906. Thanks
