I think this was amazing. If she sang sharply, well so did Maria Callas. I've always maintained that Gheorghiu was a Callas copycat, but she is a fabulous singer in her own right. Her Violetta, Leonora, Marguerite, Tosca and Manon are excellent. Here she sings with a lot of passion..love it
@kellyemu - that comment is sooooo laughable! how can anything but what the composer wanted (and hence wrote) be perfect! he had his reasons for writing the pauses. its not up to an artist to decide that they can be sung over. maybe you believe that she was "interpreting"... but the "interpretation" has to be done with the voice and emotion - not ignoring the genius of the actual composition!

beautiful... but her je veux, and other oe french sounds are too open... kinda bothers me. and yes her voice is dramatic, but i still she sings this beautifully!!
This is a light lyric soprano role. Gheorghiu's dark sound doesn't work. The voice needs to feel like a ringing bell and you need perfect intonation, it is a waltz after all. Battle, Grist, Peters, Sutherland all do it much better.
@FoggyRoad81 d'you know something, you are dead right. I went and listened to the Battle one of her with Levine singing in that weird outfit, and, ignoring the loud breathing it sounds perfect, so easy and light. On a far more childish note though, I saw "Supedbad" last night, and Levine looks exactly like the fatter teenage lead.
Bellissimo ma lei non sa francese, si sente... scusate ma una cantante lirica in questo livello come Lei dovrebbe inpegniare di pronunciare meglio la lingua. Come cantante bravissima e ecciellente, no ci sono paroli! Brava!

@gestas60323 Oh, how nice! How very delightful ! You can't stand criticism. It's only you should insult. Ha, ha, ha. I'm very sorry having offended you. But you see Juliette is 17 and it's only normal her nurse shoud be older and...After all: "Par ma vertue j'etais marie a votre age" N'est pas ? In your opinion Montserrat Caballe is a cow. And you meybe right. The difference between cows is that when this particular one starts to sing angels in heaven stop listen to her.
@gestas60323 Than it hit me ! You are as stupid as the audience that boohooed Alagna in The Scala. It seems you don't realize how many years of training needs an opera singer to achieve perfection. You don't even realize that four hours before the performance a singer starts preparing to nights performance to give the best on stage because you payed 100 $ ore more just to see her (him).
@gestas60323 For people like you I have a better alternative. If you don't like the way a singer looks or sings just leave the fucking theatre and shut up. Don't behave like animals. And don't come back until you don't sing half that marvellously than "Miss Piggy" or that "cow"
How nice it is to know i am not alone in my views, i'm with you all the way CptPinkerton, some people cannot possibly enjoy performances because they are too preoccupied picking holes in it.
@hugoforth Yes. It's a pity they don't realize that every singer has a little "something" of it's own that makes her (him) special in it's very own way. So, my love and utmost respect to: Gheorghiu, Alagna, Cotrubas, Raimondi, Vaduva, Flemming, Stratas, Netrebko, Domingo, Carreras, Te Kanawa, Caballe, Steiger, Lopardo, Vargas, Svenson, ... you name it. May God protect them and care for them for the marvellous time we have listening to their performances.
@hugoforth I join your point of view. Seeking for errors and going to the opera just to find out if the tenor or the soprano reaches a top note, is a common disease. If people do so, it is difficult to enjoy the whole performance and forgiving small mistakes. Take note: singers are humans, nor machines. Best regards
Juliette is being courted by Paris, and Gertrude is advising her to take him as husband. And yet she refuses "je veux vivre" i want to livem that is what she sings. I think.
I think, like in every profession, you have to be good with what you do and then keep a modest profile so your career lasts longer (but again, why should we be modest when we are this good?). We never know when we're going to lose our talent as we age, especially singing. When the time comes, a good social skill and good publicity would definitely help.
She is excellent and beautiful, just like all the talented Romanian musicians. I'm sure she's a clever lady to sort this out.
It's a shame!!! Every comment i read about Gheorghiu, Netrebko and Callas, contains really offensive language. I don't get it, you should have the greatest respect for people who are perfoming on this level.
If you don't like it, don't watch it!! Don't waste your time!!!
With all this filth written, I and many people with me, are also offensed.
@660stihl I could not agree more with you! Singers like Angela, Netrebko and Callas are the best singers of our time! I don´t really understand why those ignorants throw offensive words against such talented artists. I share the same feelings.
@660stihl thats just demonstrates the level of ignorance of this people, i totally agree with you because each one of these great singers are special and talented individually.!
@660stihl TOTAL Agreement with you. What's with all this rude, foul-mouthed, viciousness? I don't understand why barbarians would have any interest in watching these artists, let alone make ignorant comment. Please get drunk and go watch United Manchester matches instead.
@660stihl I couldn't agree with you more, although we should keep in mind that the majority of those people are probably 13 - 14 years old, as can often be gleaned from the poor use of language (hence the need to swear) and of course, the poor we dears have not led any kind of life, and so can't relate to the adult sentiment that's often being conveyed in all these arias etc.
We are truly fortunate that there's so many fantastic performers today of the calibre of Gheorghiu, Netrebko et al.
@660stihl Netrebko is amazing =) Angela a love hate relationship b/c she trys to sing mezzo and it sounds dry but her natural soprano roles are GREAT ^.^ Callas her voice eww... o.O
i think thats what it is alot of jealousy!!!! it must be ahrd for some to watch people excel...at such a level... they must look at their own lives and wonder what is comparable? am i not good enough casue i cant do what they can? I have compassion for that experience it sounds extrememly painful
I think you pretty much hit it on the spot! Much of the rude comments are unnecessary and are due to jealousy. ALL opera singers (Great or not so great) deserve our utmost respect. It is damn hard to hold a career and sing on command as they do! Shame on you!
Unfortunately...most of the comments critiquing the opera singer. Just because one calls it a career does not mean one is good at it. Just because you call yourself a teacher does not mean you excel, or just because you call yourself a lawyer doesn't mean you win cases. IT IS THE SAME THING.
Please, don't be elitest. Accept all comments, whether or not you enjoy them - Angela expects it. It is part of the business.
It doesn't matter if I sing as well as her, and it definitely doesn't matter if I am as pretty as her (she is! She is a very beautiful woman). But I will say this: just because you can't do something doesn't mean you don't know how it is supposed to be done.
I agree, she's a little sharp in places. But the high notes bloom, the coloratura is spot on and really fast, there's lots of color, and the basic timbre of the voice is really lovely! And you won't get any better diction from anyone else really, with these kinds of pyrotechnics.
So funny that people are so quick to criticize Opera Singers. She does a MUCH better rendition than Netrebko. Like night and day. yeah yeah, some people I AM SURE are bound (and permitted by natural law) to disagree.
Ouch!! Angela, not your best. Scream out that second to last note!!!! Line was good, french-ehhh, she seems pitchy through the whole thing like she couldn't hear the orchestra, and she seems exhausted and out of breath. Still lovely though, I've just seen better from her.
The only problem I have with her performance is that I can't really understand her French b/c her consonants arent that clear. BUT OTHER THAN THAT she is amaaaaazing
I love Gheorghiu- love her! But seriously, what coach, voice teacher, or conductor let her get away with French like that!? And her husband is French so there's really no excuse.
I'm not trying to be rude, but have you ever tried singing high notes like that and try to pronounce everything clearly at the same time? It's very difficult. When you sing so high, everything just comes out as an "ah" anyway.
yes, this is true.. but there are a lot of words that are NOT high that she is seriously butchering. I LOVE her too, and I am not a French snob at all... in fact, French is the hardest language for me to sing in... but yeah. For someone this talented, she needs to get her language act together a bit.
Criticize all you want. No one's perfect. Yes, her french could be better but that's my only complaint. Even so, someone must like it. She makes money doing stuff like this.
I've heard her sing Juliette before and she was pretty good, but this is really, really a terrible version of the song. Maybe she was just having a really off day?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Worst Juliette ever! Even I do not know French, I can understand that her diction sucks! Way worse than that low pitched Netrebko. Juliette and Lucia are roles that they can only dream of thinking their technique and musicality, but they still TRY to sing...
In agreement with miamichobit , I also would like to hear some more rests. But Angela Gheorghiu and others, Ana Netrebko, Renee Fleming, Kiri Te Kanawa, Cecilia Bartoli, they are all gems, singing as well as acting. Why do so many prigs constantly look for flaws? I don't know much about techniques, so I simply overlook opinions on that subject, just relax and enjoy the music. Regards.-
I wish she was honoring the rests throughout a little more; it's what makes this song exciting and expresses Juliette's breathlessness and excitement.
In other words, you wish she paid attention to the markings of the composer..... this is musicality to me, and she lacks that. I could not agree with you more.!
Apart from the first cadenza, in which I practically jumped, it was OK, I think. I mean, she needs to work out some pitch and trill issues, but I think she can do this role quite well. It's a shame that she's now doing roles that are way out of her fach, like Tosca, Carmen, Norma (Even if she can sing all the notes, it doesn't mean that she should do it!).
Her voice is beautiful, but...Um... she is a little sharp. ANd what is up with her pronunciation? I mean seriously. Im 13 and I can sing this.

She is at least a quarter-tone sharp for the whole aria. Nonetheless, it's still gorgeous.

I think.
Erethras 2 years ago
I could criticize her pronunciation (being a student of French, myself,) but her singing is absolutely divine. Great expression, as well.

Thanx

@660stihl I could not agree more with you! Singers like Angela, Netrebko and Callas are the best singers of our time! I don´t really understand why those ignorants throw offensive words against such talented artists. I share the same feelings.

We are truly fortunate that there's so many fantastic performers today of the calibre of Gheorghiu, Netrebko et al.

i think thats what it is alot of jealousy!!!! it must be ahrd for some to watch people excel...at such a level... they must look at their own lives and wonder what is comparable? am i not good enough casue i cant do what they can? I have compassion for that experience it sounds extrememly painful

Why do you people hate Angela so much??? Do you, by any chance be able to sing like her? So if you can´t, please shut up. You are too envy...
msmammana 2 years ago 4
@msmammana
I think you pretty much hit it on the spot! Much of the rude comments are unnecessary and are due to jealousy. ALL opera singers (Great or not so great) deserve our utmost respect. It is damn hard to hold a career and sing on command as they do! Shame on you!
SusieQT2 2 years ago 2

Thank you.

It's a bit pitchy, but I admire her crispness and lightness through the coloratura. Very energetic!
schwabalaba 2 years ago
I agree, she's a little sharp in places. But the high notes bloom, the coloratura is spot on and really fast, there's lots of color, and the basic timbre of the voice is really lovely! And you won't get any better diction from anyone else really, with these kinds of pyrotechnics.

So funny that people are so quick to criticize Opera Singers. She does a MUCH better rendition than Netrebko. Like night and day. yeah yeah, some people I AM SURE are bound (and permitted by natural law) to disagree.

Oh definitely better than Netrebko. No doubt. But still pretty bad.
CatalinaDM56 2 years ago
Ouch!! Angela, not your best. Scream out that second to last note!!!! Line was good, french-ehhh, she seems pitchy through the whole thing like she couldn't hear the orchestra, and she seems exhausted and out of breath. Still lovely though, I've just seen better from her.

Don't care for this performance. She sounds off pitch to me at times.
I've seen her perform at the Met and to be honest her voice didn't carry that well.
I do like the ending though.

I feel bad for Gertrude. She has to act like she cares.

The only problem I have with her performance is that I can't really understand her French b/c her consonants arent that clear. BUT OTHER THAN THAT she is amaaaaazing
Falln4DarkAngel 2 years ago 3
its hard to have conconants when your singing up that high. they are not the most important thing, hitting the notes is.

so her french is bad she sings the song beautifully!

I'm not trying to be rude, but have you ever tried singing high notes like that and try to pronounce everything clearly at the same time? It's very difficult. When you sing so high, everything just comes out as an "ah" anyway.
CreationsOfTheFall 2 years ago 4
Very true. Her French is so-so, but I found her voice AMAZING. Have you heard her Sempre Libera? Impeccable technique.
LittleLotte7793 2 years ago
yes, this is true.. but there are a lot of words that are NOT high that she is seriously butchering.

First off, she's singing with a completely retracted tongue--bad technique.
Secondly, her diction is NO WHERE close to the french.
Wow, I'm sorely disappointed in this performance.

I've heard her sing Juliette before and she was pretty good, but this is really, really a terrible version of the song. Maybe she was just having a really off day?
