Our engineer is exploring different methods. Air cylinders might do the trick but it requires a large air reservoir (air tank). The other idea is electric cylinders. When we make it happen, you'll see it here. I'm trying to get those ideas to work by the end of the summer. But then, the other part of the job starts---dismantling the old recoil mechanisms. That will be difficult and complicated.

We have three German 105s, an 88, several big Russian 76 and 85's (which resemble the 88), a PAK40 and about four smaller German and Russian PAKs. We think we can set these all up to recoil for film. We just need more time because we're all volunteers. :-(

Recoil is a complex problem if you're not using live rounds. Live rounds are not legal or even possible in a demilled gun. Powder is $25/pound, and a 105 shell might use four pounds. We're not willing to spend $100 to simply go boom.

We want this to look as realistic as possible. If you think its easy, then show me your cannon where you've done it.

On top of that, Hollywood is not willing to spend money on realistic effects, so there's no incentive to make this work right..

However, these displays have been around for awhile so why not try full realism short of actually shooting a round. You can see the real thing in docs on Youtube itself but there's nothing like seeing the real thing or the next best thing with your own eyes. I've seen famous things in photos and then for real. The real things better.

My very capable engineer has solved the recoil problem. If you an everyone who wants to see recoil would send me the money, WE WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. A few thousand bucks for pneumatic cylinders, air tanks and valves and taking the guns apart so that their recoil mechanisms work is all that's needed. The guns will "return to battery " on their own. What is needed is the pneumatic push to simulate "sending a round downrange." We would start work as soon as the rain stops.
