Fascinating! Thanks for sharing. I am curious about one thing particular though. I have never seen a wing chun practitioner pop their shoulder forward out of its joint before.. (it is at around :29 in the vid) can you explain what benefit would come from putting in such a dangerous position? It would be disconnected from the structure and potentially pulled out of socket or jammed backwards and injure shoulder cuff etc.. but clearly you gentleman are skilled and would not do so without reason
hey everyone, it's hal. student of eddie and rob that trained with you guys about 15 years ago. outside of one school i did in the Marines, our Wing Chun was the hardest training i ever did. appreciate everyone taking time to work with me. i haven't gotten beat up since (ha ha). some good times and a ton of good stories for sure. probably no one there knows me anymore; oh well. wish all you guys the best.
what's up with miltary uniforms that's kinda wired because every wing chun school i trained you were a t shirt and black pants and i don't care for jui wah lineages
@12344richard other schools choose to wear other outfits or pajama type uniforms, thats their choice. We choose to wear black pants ,tec boots,t-shirt ,there's nothing military about that . U dont you care for Jiu Wahn Lineage? R u Yip Man Lineage? If so they were close friends/brothers if others didn't know they go back a long way. They helped eachother out teaching their classes back in Hong Kong and their bond was like family! If you dont care then thats your preference but know the history.
@12344richard Regardless if you think their uniform is military it doesn't matter. They train with the most common comparison to daily attire to what a person wears out on the streets. If I was to have an encounter on the streets I wouldn't be wearing a gee or pajama and kung fu shoes or barefooted. Their uniform is to honor Sifu Lau's continuation to honor a close dear friend to him. You probably need to do more research about him and his lineage.
@choaker00 indeed. I can't imagine why anyone would care about what others wear? When I practice my kung fu.. it is in what ever I happened to wear that day. aka what ever is on the top of the pile of clean clothes before they go into the other pile.. of clothes to be washed :)
@sloppymantis yeah man..my whole point was just meant to be directed to why somone would question what these guys wear and train in. I agree with you to what is there to wear for the day wether it be on the pile clean or dirty. In regards to part :29 I believe that is part of the Biu Jee Form for "thrusting fingers"
and just by that term itself says what the motion does. Hopefully those brothers who are to that level can get more in depth to that topic more than me.Thanks!
@choaker00 Good day sir :) Ah yes i realized it was their biu ji practice, however I had never seen it done in that manner with the shoulder popping out, but people don't usually do things for no reason so I assume I just can not see the subtle detail of its purpose.. as for wing chun fist.. I think it gets a bad rep for no good reason. If you understand what you are seeing/doing it is quite enlightening as far as body mechanics and how to move.
great clip. i usually have some critic but i've got nothing. love the applications and video... keep up the good work. wing chun needs more of u guys.
nicely done. I trained under Jason Lau's kungfu brother Francis Fong...good stuff...I also trained under Ip Ching's organization...love to see good wing chun...and this looks real good.
i have never met sifu Lau, but I used to train under Francis Fong when I lived in Columbia, SC under one of his sifu's, attended several seminars. He is an amazing guy. I am sure Jason Lau is as well
yes I know I have trained with Sifu Fong for 22 years and teach wing chun under his guidance now for many years. He is amazing and gets more so every year.
me too. it looks lovely. but it is disturbing on so many levels. it's utterly wrong to think in application and to think that there is any connection between the movements following each other in the dummy form.
Im not sure what you mean. They Dummy is a tool to develope skill. like in kali you do siniwali drills. then you need to show the student that the drill is not relevant to real life but here is how it goes on a human body...
i'll go into a specific example from the video, 1:02min: take the first set where you do two punches (or man or wu saos, however you'd call it), then the neckpull and then the bong sao. you gotta admit that you would never use these 4 movements in this order in a fight. why should you? maybe in one of a 1000 times you really do a single neckpull following a bong sao to the opponents arm (although i have no idea why you should do that; this is not direct at all). .....................
...................... the reason for this is simple: the movements do no necessairly belong together. the form teaches you concepts and ideas with every movement. the bong sao in this section is merely a way to change the side of the dummy - with the bong you check the correct distance to the dummy. therefore there is absolutely no point in practicing these movements in this order on a human being.
I wonder if this is the same Jason Lau that had a school back in the 80's in Brooklyn, NY. At that time, I had learned the basic principles and Sil Lim Tao from one of his students.
It never ends...all the ignorant comments about people's martial arts. People don't even know Jason Lau and his Kung Fu, and yet talk nonsense as to how bad it is. Jason Lau and his disciples have a long history of fighting. Instead of talking trash, go to their schools and check them out. Talk is cheap. In the Martial World,it is the hands that do the talking.
I studied under Master Alan Goldberg for several years, although I've been out of practice. It is nice to see Si Gung Lau's final video is finally out. - Joey
Amazing. I studied under sifu for over 3 years before leaving Atlanta for law school. The precision of that school is like none other, so much so that I was almost too far advanced to adequately train elsewhere. Dai Si Heng remains the best teacher I've ever had, tough but fair and by far the rawest fighter I have EVER seen. It's really good to see the school again. Thanks Guys.
Yeah I don't think BigVader would be that disrespectful in person. Kinda funny comment though..Who uses the word "poop"? He is obviously not a martial artist that has any decent critisism on this video.
Bigvader , I think you should clean the poop out of your eyes & ears, Sifu Lau has some the best Wing Chun Instructors In the world , look them up Mike Militano, Alan Goldberg just to name a few go visit any of them or sifu lau , THEY will teach what pooping in your pants will be like after a few well placed wacks.
you know my sigung lau is a fun person to hang out with. if he read your post he would laugh. but if you saw him in person you would poop your pants. learn the history of this man and you will understand
Finally! Someone who has some actual Wing Chun instruction on tape. Everything else I've seen on YouTube is a either a collection of amateurs and wannabees showing off for the camera, or a "this style vs that style" waste of video. This "Wing Chun Today" video is great! Can't wait to see more.
I studied under Sifu Lau Yat for almost a year. It's really cool to see a youtube video of him in action. Very down to earth guy and a great teacher. Sigung Lau (My Sifu's Sifu Jason Lau) is a very smart and very well known teacher of the Wing Chun System. I miss my training very much. They are an extended family that intertwine practicality with old school tradition. It's very balanced. I hope this video does well. It looks a bit more hightech than there previous 2 videos.
What a great video.Although one can not learn or master this art through a video, this video certainly gives the student a summary or syllabus for their training curriculum. The quality and choreography as well as music and storyline it is the embodiment of what Wing Chun is. It is difficult to create an interesting Training Video, but Master Lau has accomplished that.I actually own this video and recommend it,it's available on Amazon.
Lots of good videos out there about Wing Chun...This is the best of the best by far. You have to buy this video...Grandmaster Lau is the genius of Wing Chun!!!!

I agree for the most part but one needs to show the student the apparent movement. so that he can transcend the form No?
gurojon 2 years ago
As long as the apparent movements don't match the idea of the corresponding dummy set there is no point at all in using them...
