  • ok, thank you billcody27

  • in my opinion she is of the Sibh, how else could she be so gifted with musicality and mindblowing vocals

  • What series is this on Dvd?

  • @jn45672

This is from a series called "Transatlantic Sessions 3", a scottish TV series from BBC 4. Every TV tune lasts 30 minutes. In the moment they send TR 4 . The older recordings were in 1995/ 1997/ 2007/ 2009

  • Chocolate for the eyes and ears! Simply beautiful!

  • I sure don't know what she saying but it sure is perdy!

  • Hey Tom great video , Thanks for the introduction to Julie, bought 2 of her CDs the otherday

  • She is practically elven...

  • @misteranonymousguy

Well put! She does seem too cute for words sometimes.

    "Elven", that's pretty good!

Now what is that in Gaelic?

  • shis an angel

  • she makes me sad, because I know that a woman who is as cute as she is with a voice like hers will never be mine.

I owned TR 3 soe days ago - great music, great musicians and a wonderful session atmosphere.......

  • OMG! She is a great singer, and very pretty too! ^^

  • Another gem from Master Youtuber - TomTScotland. Give this man a "Youbie"

  • O.O ??? lol

  • Does anyone know where i could find one of those Whistles Michael McGoldrick is playing.

Maybe im just not looking hard enough :P

    Much thanks, -Kevan

  • I'm can't tell if that's an Overton or a Kerry Pro (or Chieftain) low whistle there. A google search for those will lead you in the right direction.

  • That's a Low Whistle, should think "McCormicks" in Bath Street should be able to sort you out!

Failing that, I'll post you one from Derry!

  • Wait, do you mean the penny whistle julie is playing? or the extra-mint version the other guy has... that thing looks like a million dollar (euro, quid) whistle to me.

  • the "other guy" is Michael McGoldrick and that "thing" he's playing is a low whistle. Same as a penny whistle/tin whistle, just...well, lower!

  • Wonderful voice and a cheeky smile!

  • fucking briiiiiiilllliant!! i think she is a bit special and a bit gorgeous. beautiful vid!!

  • @batterseaspark I think she's very special and very gorgeous.

  • This video deserves five stars, so please rate it!

  • julie is spellbinding and adorable. pity that peter jackson didn't cast her as a singing woodland elf in the lord of the rings.

  • Oh noble youth who has left me Hi ri-abh o hiùraibh o ho Hi ri-abh o ro hùbhago Hi ri-abh a hiùraibh o ho

You have kept me behind all the others

Unknown to my father or mother

    Unknown to sister or brother

Oh woman at the spinning wheel

You know how my heart is

A young Campbell in your possession

I will not get a baptism in Uist

Until I reach the yellow-haired man

You have kept me behind all the others

  • Can anyone provide a general idea of what the lyrics mean? It's so catchy and so beautiful!

  • For what it's worth, I think Julie Fowlis represents a new love of music, she is gorgeous and talented, and when I see her sweet face, she makes me smile and wish i had the Gaelic! I love her!

  • Well put! ... Seconded!

  • 's Math sin !

    Smashin' !

  • One question. Are the Transatlantic sessions still available? I heard the series was discontinued

  • Series 1 and 3 available on DVD.

A fouth series is being recorded for UK transmission - probably around October

  • tried to order on amazon and it looks like a waiting list. Anywhere else. I,m in the US

  • @tomtscotland -tom i found out about the trans-atlantic sessions from a friend of mine in england, also a musician--jerry lives over in nashville, not too far from me-i was surprised and pleased to hear these songs, thank you so much for posting-its the only way some of us can hear this stuff as we can't afford to buy the DVD's or CD's

  • You can get the CDs and DVD from the Music in Scotland website. The price comes out to be about what you'd pay for a CD at any music store in the states and shipping isn't too bad.

  • The chorus ("vocables" like "tra la la" : Hi ri-abh a hiùraibh o ho Hi ri-abh o ro hùbhag Hi ri-abh a hiùraibh o ho Each line is followed by the chorus: Oh noble youth who has left me You have kept me behind all the others Unknown to my father or mother Unknown to sister or brother Oh woman at the spinning wheel You know how my heart is A young Campbell in your possession I will not get a baptism in Uist Until I reach the yellow-haired man You have kept me behind all the others
  • A lovely tune done by a gifted young lass, and done so the way it was meant to be: joyfully and with spirit.

  • I have to agree, Julie does look like a Fairy/ Pixie princess, but she sounds amazing! Fit a talent!

  • Comment removed

  • "Pictish" and "pixie" are in no way related. The Picts were a Celtic people, long native to Eastern Scotland and related in language to the Welsh and Ancient Brittons. Pixies are fairies!

And coming from South Uist, Julie would be a Gael, not likely of Pictish extraction. I meant only that her dainty, fine features could be said to be "Pixie" like!

As to "a small people from Northern Scotland", well the Scots Guards Regiments used to have a 6 foot minimum height requirement, hardly small?

  • Understood. I've since removed the erroneous comment. Tha mi duilich! I should check the facts before relying on anecdotes from family members. I'm the first generation in America and the only yank in the family.

  • My understanding is that Julie is actually from NORTH UIST, not SOUTH UIST.

  • what does the song talk about?

  • You can find the lyrics and translation at the website "Celtic Lyrics Corner". Just look under "Julie Fowlis" and the CD "Mar A Tha Mo Chridhe"

  • Julie tha mo dhuil ruit! Great Singing!

  • i never get tired of seeing her smile looking at me :)

  • wonderfull, cheers up the heart,

  • I so agree. Beautiful and uplifting. A Merry Christmas to you. Danny

  • my heart is fullfilled with her look at 2:24

i could marry her for life...!

    she is... a fairy

  • ...too late

  • :( damn it...

    well...

perhaps she´ll have a younger sister...:)

  • @pedrolobo25 Hey dud wed have ta fight!

  • @pedrolobo25

Well, this Dutchman had the privillige to marry such a Celtic angel.

    They are sweet and passionate.

    But beware.

These sort of women are also VERY stubborn and strong minded and indifferent towards things they don't really care about..

    Just like the men.

  • @helmuthoorn yes they are very willful just like the celts themselves

  • "she sings in a language only understood by around 60,000 people - which accounts for only approximately 1% of the population of Scotland. She sings in Scottish Gaelic"

  • She is married...pervert.

  • She is beautiful and what a fab voice !!!!!!!

  • Beautiful :)

  • Boy can she sing.

I am old and have always liked Folk music so it's good to see that there is a generation that values such stuff.

Interesting that she can play the whistle without using her cheeks like a hamster - now that is breath control.

  • Ive never heard of this women before but im now in love!!! The music is beautiful and her voice is angelic!!

  • she is a lovely girl! good luck! nice music dow. got the dvd. trans atlantic sesions 3 mate.

  • saw her at the Galway Arts Festival last summer... amazing.

  • 1st class . this girl can sing.

  • i don't know alot to be honest regarding this ...

i just remember flicking through bbc 4 on friday and the music stopped me! i am english but i absolutly love scotish and irish music! so did my research on it and got here! i am hoping to go and watch her in manchester.

  • I must admit I'm a bit concerned, though. What sort of deal did she do with the Daoine Sith (Fair Folk) to get both their voice and their looks?

  • Maybe she's one of them?

  • Aha!

  • Aye, she be!

  • already done! just bought her album, canee wait for it to turn up now!

  • Yeh - its a good one - was awarded Scots Trad Music Award Album of year - she does a few reels and stuff on whistle too!

  • amazing!!!!!

can any tell me where i can get this type of music please??

  • If you Google her name, you'll find several sites that sell her albums - 'Cuilidh' and 'Mar a tha mo chridhe'

  • waking up in the mornings listening to this song makes me feel warm.

  • Does anyone know the story behind this song? Is the girl pregnant or has she just lost her virginity? And I don't get the baptism reference - wouldn't she have been baptised as a child?

  • most beutifull language. makes me ashamed i dont know my countrys native language. i just speak doric.

  • and who says Scots (in aa it's varieties) isn't beautiful as well? I hold up Robert Burns....

    (says the drawlin' American)

  • Ay, fairly, I couldna agree mair. Scots is a native language o Scotland an aa. Whit we need, though, is mair bonie quines singin it!

  • Scots is a form of English. This girl is singing Gaidhlig which is a celtic language.

  • That's right. Scots is related to English in much the same way as Scottish Gaelic is related to Irish. My point was that it's a pity there aren't more pretty girls (bonie quines) singing Scots, as there are singing Gaelic. Sexist perhaps...but I was hinting at the way that minority languages are often seen as the prerogative of the old, and Julie, and other young Gaelic musicians, are a refreshing counter to that prejudice.

  • Have a listen to Eddy Reader [sp?] she sings in Scots, mostly Burns but her voice is great.

    Gàidhlig agus Alba gu brath.

  • What are you talking about? There are quite a few now. Karine Polwart is one I can think of. Malinky...and others that eh don't come to mind. (Karine is in Malinky)

  • yes Scottish Gaelic not English-Scots (as in Burns)

  • fit?

  • Guth glè bhinn, òran glè bhrèagha, caileag glè àlainn cuideachd! Bu chaomh leam fhios a bhith agam am beil i pòsta!

  • creepy as this sounds, there is nothing hotter than a girl playing whistle.

  • lol

copy the following into search panel

    breda smyth bachelor's walk

Some fantastic playing and a delight to the eye - Breda is so bonnie!

  • heh

    thanks, i love it!

we're like the saddest stalkers ever to wlak the earth ;)

  • Speaking of which, I wish I could see her hands all the time so I could figure out which notes she was playing!

  • You have an ear and a spare, right?

  • Actually no, ha, I am deaf in one ear :)

But anyway, I am quite new to whistle playing so not up to playing by (my one) ear as of yet...

  • well, then just keep listening. And get your hands on as many flute/ whistle/ pipers as possible an listen. That's what i was told when I started the fiddle, and, why, it's worked.!

  • She has beautiful voice

  • Rhagorol. Diolch eto

  • Fantastic, relay nice music! And isn´t that Jerry Douglas on Dobro?!

  • Awesome video, song, musicians and language. I'm a catalan girl in love with the celtic culture. Could someone tell me how can i get a dvd of Julie Fowlis? Thanks for posting!

  • I don't think she has an individual DVD release. However, if you Google "Tranatlantic Sessions 3" - you will find that this series is due to be released shortly - and of course she features on several tracks.

  • Beautiful arrangement, what a great series of programs, great musicians and singers, great sound and an excellent overall production. Maith sibh go leir.

  • Yes it was great. Could be a good Christmas present - it's due out on DVD 3rd December :-]

  • Damn I loved it!!

Wish I could learn some ancient languages like this

  • Scots Gaelic isn't any more ancient than English. It's still in use!

  • Oh...that's some useful info hehehe, but it's cool anyway

  • Well, it has been around for a bit longer.

  • This is pure class ! A1 all the way!

  • Great. Who are the drummer and bassist?

  • Percussion is Donald Hay and bassist is Todd Parks.

  • excellent stuff thanks for posting, cant beat these sessions
