  • My mother learned to fly from a barnstorming pilot when she was a teenager in the 1930s. Amelia Earhart was, of course, one of her heros.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • @beachdog67 Really? What did she say was her best reason/experience for flying?

  • @RiverBirch1967 Y'know? Other than reminiscing about flying as one example of how adventurous and ambitious her life was before the war, she really didn't say much about it. Sadly, I believe she was one of that generation of women who, pressured by the "societal norms" of the time, made the decision to subordinate her dreams and goals to support the direction of the man she married. In some ways, I guess that worked out well. But later in life I think she wondered about roads not taken.

  • @beachdog67 Beachy this is a good point you have made about society's norms and expectations of women. She defied that and I feel that is one reason she was called "Glamorous of the Skies." Women did admire her but society still put them into marriage and children and "barefoot in the kitchen" but they had their OWN minds, like to admire Amelia and all she did. Roads not taken..... as you said..... but could they have been taken by the ordinary, or did it take an extra-ordinary woman?

  • @RiverBirch1967 Yes. I think it was a LOT more difficult for women then to pursue their aspirations. For socio-political reasons I truly cannot begin to fathom the society, generally speaking, had completely bought into a rigid patriarchal model. I am truly grateful to have lived in an era when we took great strides toward dismantling that amazingly un-useful structure.

  • Very nice video. My Mom also used to talk about Amelia Earhart and was very independent, ahead of her time person, with a positive can do attitude toward anything new and in that sense reminded me of what I read and heard about Amelia.

  • @camarosbob Amen to that!!!!!

  • Steffidude, thank you for saying this! I have long felt this and many disagreed. I never understood: "she was not known for her beauty" Um..... well why not? She was given the celebrity nickname of being a glamour of the skies. She was a very pretty woman, in body, and in spirit. Put both together and you have a bombshell.

  • Nice slide show River Birchy girl. Yes i think Amelia

had quite a substantial hand in emancipating women from the kitchen/ bedroom where they SHOULD BE and putting them in glass towers and suits where they SHOULD'NT BE!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Just kidding, i'm not a sexist pig...really...honest....true!

    :):)

  • *punches you in the arm* You goof! lol

  • love that theme song! Fits nicely with this slide show too! Did you know that Joss Wheadon wrote that song?

  • Yes. Great song, he wrote. I heard he was going to sing it himself but needed a more "folksy" sound. Is that true?

  • Not sure about that... He wrote all of the songs in that Buffy musical episode, "Once More With Feeling". He's a pretty talented song writer.

  • He's talented at everything! Everything!
