@mikelsok - Battle damage, along with wear and tear. Hauling thousands of pounds of bombs on very long missions of many hours at high altitude is very stressful on the engines.
If the B17 is about 700 to go up in, how much would that F 16 be to fly in?, about 5000. I noticed a few swimming pools, is that is Southern California?
I was at this very same airshow, and took the ride as well...it might have been the very same flight, as I think that's my lower body you caught between 5:36-5:44!
Nice use of Fenton's "Memphis Belle" score; nicely edited video as well.
My dad was a 17 driver with the 15th AF out of Tunisia; he'd passed away by the time I took this ride, but I'll rmember it a high-point of my lie forever. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this...thanks so much for posting!
@deancook652 My Dad, too, was a B-17 pilot, 15th AF in Foggia, Italy. I had a very eerie feeling finally getting to climb inside a B-17. Made my stomach turn a little actually - just thinking of the immense struggles experienced by the air crews. I didn't get fly in it though. Must be an awesome ride!
@sseklof I had the very same sense; not really "stomach churning," really, just a rather eerie feeling of "deja vu," as if I had experienced it before. Having spent the first half of my life as the son of a professional pilot, this was easy to shrug off at the time; now, it gives me pause.
@sseklof my dad was stationed in watton englang 1944-45 25 bomb group he was a tin knocker loosely translates to ground crew mechanic he told me them 17`s would come back all shot to hell some even running on only one engine they would patch up the holes change out any engines that were not running with new ones change oil on remaining engines refuel them rearm them new crew and send em back to germany
waited to get "perfect shot" of B-24 over diamonds on water from waist gunner position. When I turned around there was a B-17 veteran who was a POW behind me crying. Also had a WWII B-17 pilot flying plane as guest. Back then the B-24 was silver and named "All American". Collings Foundation does an outstanding job keeping these planes alive and preserving their heritage.
B17PearlHarbor , So your dad was one of those unlucky sobs' to fly into the middle of the Attack ? ! Wow . When I had my Ride this past summer , That was one of the first things i thought about . I happened tyoo look through the hatch and the sun looked like the Rising sun scene from Tora, Tora .
ever since i was a little boy and even now with the modern aircraft all allround i still think the b-17 is the most beautyfill and most gracefull aircraft that was ever made.
Some how even after all these years, there is something innately and deeply magestic about this bird even beyond that of the other bombers she served with...just a beautiful plane, I almost tear up everytime i see one.
I watched the 909 fly overhead while I was fishing. She flew over twice! The sound of those engines is one I will remember for a long time. I'd never seen a flying fort before, and the first one I saw was flying - where it should be.
I flew in her last summer on July 13, 2009. It was just about the greatest thrill of my life. If you ever get the chance, do it. I was in a war plane but felt closer to God than I ever had.
I flew in this plane a few years back out of Orange County, CA airport. I was amazed at the noise and vibration. It's hard to imagine 18 hours in this thing at high altitude with ME109s all over you. The pilots were studs.
One thing I was not ready for was when the rear wheel retracted and came up right infront of where I sat and kept spinning with no protection.
Standing up and putting my head into the airstream on top was exhilarating.
90 yr old dad flew recently in a B-17 called the Liberty Bell, in Atlanta. He was amazed at how much the flying fortress had "shrunk" since he was shot down at Pearl Harbor! But boy did he love the ride and sound of those engines. He was 21 and co pilot and went on to 59 bombing missions in the Pacific.
Wonderfully well-done tribute to this great plane! As a matter of fact, I'm heading out now to Warrenton, VA airport where the Collins Foundation has brought their "Wings of Freedom Tour." I'm taking a ride up in the Nine-0-Nine
I was on the NINE O NINE today just hours ago. 9/20/09 . I saw a few great old men staring at her wearing there gear. made me very proud of what they did.
I flew in her when i was only 10 or 11 and had to pay with my own moneyand it was worth it. im 4 now and still have a huge intrest for WWII and moments like the one you explained with the old men make me proud to be American and only sometimes makes me wish I could have served along side those men in WWII
My father flew 29 missions in the as the bombardier on the 909. You mentioned in your intro that the original 909 flew across the Atlantic after the war with 600 patch holes. (I believe the plane in this video is made from parts taken from several planes and named in honor of the 909.) Dad told me that they also came home across the Atlantic on only 3 engines. Great video & thanks for sharing. Also, hats off to the Collings foundation for all their good work.
3 years ago I decided to spend the money and fly on the 909 in Long Beach. Our flight had a 79 yr old vet B-17 side gunner who told us about his 30 missions over Europe. Last year we spent the money and flew the B-24 with a guy who flew on a B-24 crew. He was 86 and moved about the 24 like he was 19 again. This year we finish with the B-25. To fly with these heros and complete the trifecta is something my son and I will treasure forever. Do all 3 if you can.
I was lucky and got to see this Nine-O-Nine in Rhode Island just a few weeks ago. Took some nice videos. They also brought along the P51, a B24 Liberator and their B25 Mitchell.
Dude I can't either but its a huge tax deduction that you will never forget it. And you are unique. a tiny tiny fraction of people have ever flown on one of these beautiful planes. Try to do it guy its a trip.
What a great video!! I see this plane in watsonville when it comes out, I live in Gilroy. They were offering rides to Moffet Field from Watsonville but I never did it. Now I think I will, the next time it comes around.
Won't be long before these old war birds are grounded. I am proud of the role they played and grateful that I had a chance to go up on the nine O Nine
You know, this was a terrific video, and I'm grateful to you for providing it. But WHY did you have to mix "patriotic music" over the top of those beautiful engine sounds? To me, the music was a distraction from the sounds of the plane. Would you paint a rose to improve it?
I got chills down my spine while watching your video. You did a wonderful job putting it together. I have seen Nine-O-Nine a few times and I knew Carl Clark. He was such an awesome guy; he flew Nine-O-Nine for the Collings Foundation. I am pretty sure he was the only Veteran from WWll that flew during the war and was still checked out to fly B17's (at the time of his death). Great Video! Thanks for posting. I have in flight, combat photo's taken of this plane during the war. My grandfather piloted the Nine 0 Nine during WWII. I hope to take a flight in this plane the next time they come through my area.
Flew in it years ago and was very moving. Took shot of B-24 flying with it and turned around to see man who had been shot down in one crying. Such graceful airplanes and young men lost to war.
Please support the Collings Foundation in any way you can. They keep this beautiful aircraft and a Consolidated B-24 Liberator named "All America" flying.
I flew in that aircraft when it was at McClellan AFB in California about 4 years ago. It is indeed a quite amazing experience. You don't have any conversations on that sucker either, damn engines are so loud. You have to yell right in the other guy's ear. On my flight they opened the bomb bay doors and four parachutists jumped out :D
My Grandma worked on b-17s (the engines) and my grandpa almost became a tale gunner. My dad got to fly Nine O Nine, for ten minutes... its my dad favorite plane of all time and i got to take a special only me tour all the way around the aircraft and in side...IT WAS AWSOME.....LIVE ONE B-17!!!!!!
Ive only seen one of the Flying Fortesses take of once, my grandfather worked on them during WW2, these things were such a big part of the war, and they were a plane of the United States of America
I rode on the None o Nine out of Zepperini Field out of Torrance back in 2000. i will nevr forget it. The majestic and brutal power of her...rumblin' down that runway with all 4 of those 1200 horsepower cyclones screaming...shaking.... I was hangin' on...one of the best times of my life. Indeed. where the radio operator was...
I flew on the 909 3 years ago. My husband was so sweet he donated to the Collings Foundation in my name and I can now ride free. I rode on the B-17 and the B-24 and next year will fly on the B-25. I LOVE THIS HISTORY.
I went up in "Nine O Nine" this past Saturday in Schenectady. What a ride! Beautiful aircraft. Absolutely the most incredible thing I've ever experienced. I think I had the same big-ass grin on my face as you from the time I saw her sitting on the tarmac until... well, I still have it!
Damn, I wish I could have afforded to go up on the B-24 "Witchcraft"... or the Mitchell for that matter! Absolutely the coolest thing I've ever done. The Collings Foundation deserves a pat on the back!
The other day I was sitting in my living room with my son. I jumped up and ran out the door. My son yells "What's up dad?" I yelled back it's a B17. Seconds later it flew over. I don't know how I knew what it was. I just did. Love those planes. Great video!
great video, i went on a ride in one at the reading pennsylvania air show finally after 12years of going to the show, what an amazing plane. thanks for the video cause of course my camera battery died during my ride.
I just rode in the B17 today as part of that same Wings Of Freedom tour. It cost s $450 for a half hour flight and it is well worth it! Absolutely amazing and a once in a life time oppurnity in my opinion, good video as well I wish I had brought a video camera with me but it was a kind of spur of the moment decision so all I have is still pictures but I am so happy I was able to go up in that beauty of an aircraft.
It's actually part of a roving display. They have a B17, a B24, and a B-25 as part of the Wings of Freedom tour. You can get more info at collingsfoundation dot org
I rode this last year and it was absolutely awesome! You get to roam the plane once it is up. It is one of my greatest memories. Go if you ever get the chance, it is expensive, but worth every last nickel!
Awsome Video!, beuatiful aircraft!!. And one hell of a bomber too!. Thats the music from the Movie Memphis Belle (or quite similar), were can I download it?, thanks for the ride!!.
