@DJPete113 I AM SO GLAD YOU DID THAT TOO... I WAS at an old record rack store recently and I had the store owner searching the entire store for the Monroes.. I have loved this song/band for over 30 yrs.I know they have this song on "big audio dynamite II" but it is very difficult to find them-they aren't on I-tunes.. I was happy to see this on here.Really great to hear "my fav song again" THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS.Please don't take it down ! I don't want to think of this song lost forever.. :(
Totally fab top-40 hit from back in the early 80s! Always loved this song. And what a beautiful bass guitar! I have one similar to it!!!! It's ashame that in video they come across as more of a wedding band style, because i always imagined more of an early-80s Joe Jackson type style or more like The Waitresses. These guys had a great sound but cheap and juvenile gimmick/video (actually, no gimmick). What a shame. Anyway, kudos for such a friggin' great song!!!
This Video is remake of a video done by Steve of Modern Fear back in 1984. It is not an original video. But it does show the classic style of the 80's that fits the song.
I posted a new version of the the same video, with some extra footage and effects that I added. (Look for the Title.....Enjoy the song......)
Hey Tony, just want to let you know that I think this is one of the best songs ever. Simply brilliant. It is too bad it didn't get the recognition it deserves but it sounds as great today as it did in 1982.
Has the "LP Version" of "What Do All The People Know" ever been made available on CD? The edited version is available on a couple different releases: 'Living In Oblivion: The '80s Greatest Hits, Volume 3' (1994) and 'Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s, Volume 4' (1994). "What Do All The People Know" peaked at #59 on the Hot 100 in 1982. One of my favorite '80s tracks! It's long overdue for another appearance on an '80s compilation!
Hi! I'm Louanna. I knew Donna Means back in the mid 80s when she was engaged to Bob. And if you remember me, Bob, you know that I know why the song was written...
i love this song, soo happy i found it, so thanks for uploading this :) i really wish i could buy it on itunes, becuse the only version they have is some other band's remake of this. nothing is better than the original one though!!
I agree, this is a great song! It's hard to imagine this, but in 2009, this song is 27 years old, as old as songs from 1955 were in 1982. It still sounds fresh to me now.
The song is a collector's item because of the record label going out of business as the song was climbing the charts. This is where you can find the CD:
This record is F**KIn" GREAT!! Why the hell was this not a big hit in the 80's, it's one of the BEST pop records ever, it's catchy as hell, with a killer chorus, excellent vocals, & wonderful synths & beats. PLEASE, DJ Pete113, put "The Monroes" in the group search for this masterpiece, thanks for loading this. Gary in PA USA
Thank you for sharing this video. This song was one of my favorites when released and still is today. The CD sounds great while driving in the California sunshine.
You know... all these crap-tacular bands nowadays trying to rehash the 80's with their focus on shitty fashion & their blatant lack of knowledge as to how to handle an 808 can NEVER hold a candle to great 80's tunes like this. this song is timeless.
Hey, did you read the rest of my statement when I said how "these crap-tacular bands nowadays.....can never hold a candle to great '80's tunes like THIS" ? Time to increase the prescription on the glasses pops. Zero points for reading comprehension, way to go bear.
Thx and ya i guess. The only good song i did was Vertigo and Spiderwebs bass covers. If you watch them, don't watch the smoke on water one, i did that like 11 months ago and i wasn't good. Like really, not good. Now i am :)
This song will be played live with the original vocalist on 1/16/09 in Minneapolis @ the legendary First Avenue/7th St. Entry night club(where Prince filmed "Purple Rain") with one of the tightest bands in town - The Monroes meet the Melismatics! - Be thee!
Every weekend, my roommate and I would go to the the bowling alley in San Diego where they played just to hear this song. They were AWESOME! It's still one of my favorites. :)
This song is brilliant! I was a baby in radio when this was out and it was in more than heavy rotation when I was on the air. I loved backtiming into the news with this one...
A casualty of Japan's Alfa Records pulling out of the US market. Along with acts like Bill Vera & the Beaters, ("At this Moment") the Monroes were left high and dry with no label support just as their career was starting to go into overdrive. Damn shame, too. We played the hell out of this song during my radio days in IIllinois back in the early 80's.
for a while.like 20 yrs. every cover band in nj played this tune.......great pop song...one of the best ever written in my opinion....(i was in one of those cover bands>>)
Does anyone know if "Yamarock", the B-side of this single, is available anywhere? I have the 7" single, but don't have a record player anymore. It's a great instrumental.
The lead singer has a new band now called The Tony Ortiz Band and is playing in the Mpls area and sounds great. I'm a little biased though cause he's my dad.... You should check him out on I tunes

The band in the video, is not "The Monroes" who actually did the hit tune you hear in the audio. How do I know? I played this song everynight with Bobby Monroe, who wrote and sang the tune, for years after the band brokeup in San Diego.
Great song, and "no" I don't know where Bobby is now....
The band in the video is called Modern Fear a North Jersey band in the 80's. The Vj who made this video has been in contact with the lead singer of the Monroes Ortiz
Great song, and lost because the record company that was promoting them went bust as the song was coming out...soo sad. What might they have done with some backing? Anyway, if you are looking for the song on CD, (old school) - it's on one of the "Living in Oblivion" compilations of '80s songs.
thanks for posting this song it's called what do all the people know by the monroes. I don't think you'll be able to find on any release, I had it on cassette, but who has a player anymore? this is a beautiful tune, the angst of uncertainty put into the simple words of a young lover having second thoughts.
Hello Everyone!!!!!! I am a VJ in North Jersey and I have over 20,000 music videos. If you want me to post any, let me know. There was never an official video for this song. I made the video out of clips of an 80's band in the 80's. The Alpha Label for this song went belly-up. Also, this is the LP version of the song. (Meaning, the version you here on the radio has been edited and cut.)Anyone from Northern New Jersey, might notice a familiar face.
Good Goddess this song came out the year I was born, and it took me forever (well, longer than usual) to find out who performed it (gotta love JackFM!) So glad I found this on here!
Great to hear this song again. I was only 6 in 1982 so it's hard to remember how much airplay this song actually got, but I don't remember seeing it on MTV much back then.
Also, I listen to a lot of 1980's throwback channels or 80's shows (like Saturday nights 9PM to 12AM etc) And I NEVER hear them play this song.
Great post! And a very under appreciated song. Love it!
AWESOME song! When this song comes on in the summer I roll my windows down, let go of the wheel and extend my arms out the windows--ok just one, i'm not 7'8".
Seriously, I taped this song off the radio when I was in gradeschool and played it every summer until it was finally eaten by my tape player in college! One of the GREATEST songs of all time, and YES, it got a TON of radio play in the midwest as well!
Gotta be in my top ten favorite songs of all time! Thanks for the post!!
This song is quite possibly my favorite song of ALL TIME. I remember listening to it with my friends in high school and down at the beach.
I looked for it on CD for years without success (I know they had some label issues or something). I finally got it on an 80's music compilation CD called "Living in Oblivion Volume III", in case anyone is looking.
JTO - I know this song is still loved and remembered by many and I'm sure it will be for years to come.
I read about this song and they act like it didn't get much play. I remember this song all too well,it got a lot of play here in the east. It never got played out sounds as good as it did
the band not together anymore but the lead singer still plays live in san diego and LA and he's sounds better that ever. he should have a new album comming out soon

Good Goddess this song came out the year I was born, and it took me forever (well, longer than usual) to find out who performed it (gotta love JackFM!) So glad I found this on here!

i wish Jack would at least let people know the name and artist. It can be frustrating not knowing a great songs name.

Loved this song. The only thing I ever found by them was an LP with 4 songs on it. Did they ever release an album?

This song is quite possibly my favorite song of ALL TIME. I remember listening to it with my friends in high school and down at the beach.
I looked for it on CD for years without success (I know they had some label issues or something). I finally got it on an 80's music compilation CD called "Living in Oblivion Volume III", in case anyone is looking.
JTO - I know this song is still loved and remembered by many and I'm sure it will be for years to come.

Awesome tune, one of the local bands in Rhode Island did a cover of this song for a couple of years in the 80's and it was always a crowd favorite.
