  • test

  • yahhhhhhhhhh. this rocks. synth love.

  • Please refer to the new video posted by Tony...... We did not want to delete this video because of all the hits it received. We were not able replace the video here. So finally enjoy the REAL Monroes........

  • I WOULD LIKE TO REFER ALL OF YOU TO THAT VIDEO POST! (u will see it) WE WERE UNABLE TO REPLACE THE VIDEO HERE AND WE DID NOT WANT TO DELETE THIS POST BECAUSE WE WOULD LOSE THE 80, 000 HITS WE GOT!!! NOW U CAN SEE THE ORIGINAL MONROES DOING THERE SONG!!!!!! ENJOY!!!!!!

  • To all the people who love this song..........................................................Tony Ortiz (The lead singer of The Monroes and myself, found the only ORIGINAL performance of The Monroes. Tony was at my studio and together we remixed the song Digitally.

  • @DJPete113 I AM SO GLAD YOU DID THAT TOO... I WAS at an old record rack store recently and I had the store owner searching the entire store for the Monroes.. I have loved this song/band for over 30 yrs.I know they have this song on "big audio dynamite II" but it is very difficult to find them-they aren't on I-tunes.. I was happy to see this on here.Really great to hear "my fav song again" THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS.Please don't take it down ! I don't want to think of this song lost forever.. :(

  • "all the people tell me so, but what do all the people know..."

  • Totally fab top-40 hit from back in the early 80s! Always loved this song. And what a beautiful bass guitar! I have one similar to it!!!! It's ashame that in video they come across as more of a wedding band style, because i always imagined more of an early-80s Joe Jackson type style or more like The Waitresses. These guys had a great sound but cheap and juvenile gimmick/video (actually, no gimmick). What a shame. Anyway, kudos for such a friggin' great song!!!

  • Call Me

  • Tony....I think I got the footage from Merv Griffen

  • This Video is remake of a video done by Steve of Modern Fear back in 1984. It is not an original video. But it does show the classic style of the 80's that fits the song.

I posted a new version of the the same video, with some extra footage and effects that I added. (Look for the Title.....Enjoy the song......)

  • who is the guy in the blue and white striped shirt?

  • The best 80's 1 hit wonder by far

  • @Rattlehead1818 are u sure about that? What about thriller?

  • well thriller wasn't a one hit wonder, cuz Micheal Jackson had many hit songs, while this group only had one hit song ergo this.

  • A somewhat happy-go-lucky, foot tapping rhythm, this song will always sound good.

  • If you use the Firefox browser you should install the DownloadHelper add-on which makes it easy to download .mp3 versions of YouTube videos

  • Why is this not on iTunes? The humanity!

  • @TrickMyFood You can get it on the "Living in Oblivion" series.

  • awesome. might just be my favorite song from the '80's.

  • Hey Tony, just want to let you know that I think this is one of the best songs ever. Simply brilliant. It is too bad it didn't get the recognition it deserves but it sounds as great today as it did in 1982.

  • @martinjsxx

    thanks Man!

    Tony

  • I really want that poster in the backround at the start that reads "modern fear"

  • Did you catch that footwork by one of the guitar players. Look out Michael Jackson!

  • awesome song!

  • is there a new harder rock version of this? cuz that wouold be ghetto as hell

  • FABULOUS song. One of my favorites of all time - period. Unfortunately, it is obscure and underappreciated.

  • The bass player totally beat someone ass before they filmed. He's beefy.

  • is it just me, or does that bass player have one hell of a shiner

  • how can i get this song? its not available on itunes

  • thank youuu!!

  • Has the "LP Version" of "What Do All The People Know" ever been made available on CD? The edited version is available on a couple different releases: 'Living In Oblivion: The '80s Greatest Hits, Volume 3' (1994) and 'Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s, Volume 4' (1994). "What Do All The People Know" peaked at #59 on the Hot 100 in 1982. One of my favorite '80s tracks! It's long overdue for another appearance on an '80s compilation!

  • Send me your email and i can send you LP version i was the lead singer for the Monroes.

    Tony

  • I heard the new Black Eyed Peas song "Meet Me Halfway", and I think the part of the chorus in that song sounds a lot like 2:15 - 2:22 / 2:29 - 2:34.

  • Best one hit wonder of the 80's

  • @AlfieTheBear

    Thanks so much.

This video is not the Monroes but i was the lead singer!

  • @monro5600 i've fallen in love with this song too many times to count... do you know where i can find your ep???

  • The '80s were a blast. What a great decade to be young.

Then again, there was never a bad decade to be young!

  • Great, great song - thank you. It's nearly impossible to find it elsewhere.

  • The band in the video isn't The Monroes. What the hell?

  • wildblue.. do share

  • Hi! I'm Louanna. I knew Donna Means back in the mid 80s when she was engaged to Bob. And if you remember me, Bob, you know that I know why the song was written...

  • I went to HS with Donna Means and I Love this song....

  • I bought this EP in a cutout bin back in 83/84. Excellent songs...Cut to 1990 and I was short money for a date...I sold the album :(

This song is an example of what pop music could be, if only they got rid of the formulaic songs and stepford boys and girls.

  • i love this song, soo happy i found it, so thanks for uploading this :) i really wish i could buy it on itunes, becuse the only version they have is some other band's remake of this. nothing is better than the original one though!!

  • i know! its a suck ass version of this lol this song is so hard to find

  • Comment removed

  • <3<3 this is sad i love this song so much and i wasnt even alive or close to it im a teen , this song is amazing

  • me too :) loveee this song

  • You are clearly someone who recognizes quality on your own! You will probably do great things.

  • I agree, this is a great song! It's hard to imagine this, but in 2009, this song is 27 years old, as old as songs from 1955 were in 1982. It still sounds fresh to me now.

  • where did you find this

  • 1982.. Can't believe it.. So long ago.

  • The video has nothing to do with the song, except as a background.

  • The song is a collector's item because of the record label going out of business as the song was climbing the charts. This is where you can find the CD:

"Living In Oblivion - The 80's Greatest

Hits Vol. 3 EMI Records USA 1994

Google "The Monroes" - great read!

  • Thanks!

  • Great song. If this was the video for it, geez...awful.

  • This record is F**KIn" GREAT!! Why the hell was this not a big hit in the 80's, it's one of the BEST pop records ever, it's catchy as hell, with a killer chorus, excellent vocals, & wonderful synths & beats. PLEASE, DJ Pete113, put "The Monroes" in the group search for this masterpiece, thanks for loading this. Gary in PA USA

  • No 80s playlist is complete without this one. I like the message of thought independence, too.

    Thanks for posting, DJPete113!

  • is this the real musc video?

  • ive been looking for this song for like a month finally found it

  • Is that "Meat" from Porky's?

  • This made my day! What a great song, good memories - thanks for the trip down memory lane.

  • Such a great 80's tune. Brings me back to cruising around with my buds in my Mom's Olds with the radio cranked.

  • RUSTY where are you now !!!!

  • which RUSTY are you looking for?

  • hey LUVPALIN1, which RUSTY are you looking for?

  • rocky(frank stallone) plays bass, not guitar. lol

  • I didn't know Frank Stallone played guitar for the Monroes.

  • bass is also guitar smart one its called a "bass guitar"

  • but its not the same, theyre so unlike eachother

  • this song kicks ass

  • my dad likes this song

  • the Best 80s Video... kickass

  • the bassist looks like rocky haha

  • Uhhh... that's not the Monroes

  • One of the best 80s songs thats is far too often over looked!

  • this song is hard to find . it brings back lots of memories . this song was the 80's

  • What a great song. I haven't heard it for over 20 years, but I never forgot it.

  • Thank you for sharing this video. This song was one of my favorites when released and still is today. The CD sounds great while driving in the California sunshine.

    Cupertino, Ca

  • awsome song. the lead singer is wearing a USMA coat.

  • Comment removed

  • intense

  • simply fantastic!

  • There was a video for the song Jeanette on here but it's oddly missing, guess the Youtube nazis got to it

  • You know... all these crap-tacular bands nowadays trying to rehash the 80's with their focus on shitty fashion & their blatant lack of knowledge as to how to handle an 808 can NEVER hold a candle to great 80's tunes like this. this song is timeless.

  • For Information.....This video was filmed on September 7, 1984.........So Ur comment on "Crap-tacular Bands" on this video is certainly "INCORRECT"

  • Hey, did you read the rest of my statement when I said how "these crap-tacular bands nowadays.....can never hold a candle to great '80's tunes like THIS" ? Time to increase the prescription on the glasses pops. Zero points for reading comprehension, way to go bear.

  • Tony...It's Pete...the one that posted the video????

    How was the concert?

  • Pete hiya!

email me at yahoo account i sent you message i have new cell phone.

    Tony

  • One of the greatest songs ever, takes me back to my youth.

  • Hear this song tonight (1-16-09) live with Jesus Tony Ortiz of the Monroes performing with The Melismatics in Minneapolis at 7th St Entry!

  • Tony if this is you this is jonnie x-wife Tracey. Wow what a time! xoxo!

  • Great song... I am so disappointed that Itunes does not have it and I can not take it on my morning run! #^#&!Q!

  • go buy it dick

  • SICK Rickenbacker man! What series is that? 4003?

  • It appears to be a 4001 based on the triangular inlays. It looks like a 70's model. Are you a bass player?

  • Thx and ya i guess. The only good song i did was Vertigo and Spiderwebs bass covers. If you watch them, don't watch the smoke on water one, i did that like 11 months ago and i wasn't good. Like really, not good. Now i am :)

  • Cool. I play a Ric 4003S. It's nice to see that the Monroe's used a Ric in this song!

  • Hey 55westend

This is not the Monres, it is a band from the east coast.

My bass player in the Monroes used a P-Bass.

    Tony

  • This song will be played live with the original vocalist on 1/16/09 in Minneapolis @ the legendary First Avenue/7th St. Entry night club(where Prince filmed "Purple Rain") with one of the tightest bands in town - The Monroes meet the Melismatics! - Be thee!

  • hey musicians...each letter represents a measure

    VERSE

    E-E-A-B

    CHORUS

    c#m-c#m-c#m-A

    E-B-A-E-E

    c#m-c#m-A-E

    B-A-E-E

  • Every weekend, my roommate and I would go to the the bowling alley in San Diego where they played just to hear this song. They were AWESOME! It's still one of my favorites. :)

  • Another great song off the EP is "Somewhere In The Night" , But nothing beats this one!

  • This song is brilliant! I was a baby in radio when this was out and it was in more than heavy rotation when I was on the air. I loved backtiming into the news with this one...

  • what could make you feel like dancing more than this? totally a wedding song lol

  • A casualty of Japan's Alfa Records pulling out of the US market. Along with acts like Bill Vera & the Beaters, ("At this Moment") the Monroes were left high and dry with no label support just as their career was starting to go into overdrive. Damn shame, too. We played the hell out of this song during my radio days in IIllinois back in the early 80's.

  • for a while.like 20 yrs. every cover band in nj played this tune.......great pop song...one of the best ever written in my opinion....(i was in one of those cover bands>>)

  • This is on my top 10 list of best 80s songs! WDOX Wildwood baby!!!!

  • Does anyone know if "Yamarock", the B-side of this single, is available anywhere? I have the 7" single, but don't have a record player anymore. It's a great instrumental.

  • The lead singer has a new band now called The Tony Ortiz Band and is playing in the Mpls area and sounds great. I'm a little biased though cause he's my dad.... You should check him out on I tunes

  • what is mpls area? Do you have any recent pictures??

  • one of the best songs from the 80's!!

  • Find this song: Living in Oblivion: Greatest Hits of the 80's, Vol 3

I love this song, and I listen to it every day!!

    very good song!!!

  • You will find it there, but it is the short version.

  • Thats supposed to be Astrosmash :)

  • I remember playing Astrosmah on Intelivision when I first heard this song.

  • my best friends uncle is the lead singer for the Monroes met him last summer and got to listen to him sing

  • I hear this song everytime I go to Hurricane Harbor/Six Flags in Arlington Texas! I tell my kids I love this song and they look at me like I am a retard because they have never heard of it... The kids of today... Thanks for posting on here...BD

  • ballin song

  • omg!! I so loved this song when i was a kid. :) It still rocks...

  • The band in the video, is not "The Monroes" who actually did the hit tune you hear in the audio. How do I know? I played this song everynight with Bobby Monroe, who wrote and sang the tune, for years after the band brokeup in San Diego.

Great song, and "no" I don't know where Bobby is now....

  • The band in the video is called Modern Fear a North Jersey band in the 80's. The Vj who made this video has been in contact with the lead singer of the Monroes Ortiz

  • Great song, and lost because the record company that was promoting them went bust as the song was coming out...soo sad. What might they have done with some backing? Anyway, if you are looking for the song on CD, (old school) - it's on one of the "Living in Oblivion" compilations of '80s songs.

  • thanks for posting this song it's called what do all the people know by the monroes. I don't think you'll be able to find on any release, I had it on cassette, but who has a player anymore? this is a beautiful tune, the angst of uncertainty put into the simple words of a young lover having second thoughts.

  • i can't believe i found this song again... i love this!

  • fuckin love this shit!

  • Hey Pete......... Loved that Modern Fear in the 80s. Nick Caso

  • Whats Up Nick!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love my dad, he's the worlds best singer!!!! the Lead singer is my dad and I am so proud of him. I love you dad

    Jen

  • tell your dad to contact DJ Pete he made this video and he wants to talk to him pete's friend

  • This reminds me of plowing my girlfriend in early 80's...ahh if I could have back the time.

  • hey petey great job keep up the good work

  • This was filmed at the Foxes Lair in Hackensack, NJ. 1985

  • Soooo cool! My brother's band used to play there!

Good times!!! Seems like a lifetime ago!

  • Hello Everyone!!!!!! I am a VJ in North Jersey and I have over 20,000 music videos. If you want me to post any, let me know. There was never an official video for this song. I made the video out of clips of an 80's band in the 80's. The Alpha Label for this song went belly-up. Also, this is the LP version of the song. (Meaning, the version you here on the radio has been edited and cut.)Anyone from Northern New Jersey, might notice a familiar face.

  • i totally forgot about this song i used too love it sooooo much

  • Good Goddess this song came out the year I was born, and it took me forever (well, longer than usual) to find out who performed it (gotta love JackFM!) So glad I found this on here!

  • you in the Twin Cities?

  • Yes I am, but JackFM is all over too darlin...

  • i wish Jack would at least let people know the name and artist. It can be frustrating not knowing a great songs name.

  • haha.. yeah, i heard this on that station(but in texas), and i remembered how much i loved it :)

    youtube is good for something....

  • Great to hear this song again. I was only 6 in 1982 so it's hard to remember how much airplay this song actually got, but I don't remember seeing it on MTV much back then.

Also, I listen to a lot of 1980's throwback channels or 80's shows (like Saturday nights 9PM to 12AM etc) And I NEVER hear them play this song.

Great post! And a very under appreciated song. Love it!

  • super job!!

  • Thank you for sharing this rare masterpiece.

  • OMG!!! thank you sooooo much for posting this, this is by far one of my all time favorite songs!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!

  • que gran tema al fin lo encontre y lo disfruto una vez mas....marcela from chile

  • ton's of college radio airplay in the Northeastin early 80's

  • AWESOME song! When this song comes on in the summer I roll my windows down, let go of the wheel and extend my arms out the windows--ok just one, i'm not 7'8".

Seriously, I taped this song off the radio when I was in gradeschool and played it every summer until it was finally eaten by my tape player in college! One of the GREATEST songs of all time, and YES, it got a TON of radio play in the midwest as well!

Gotta be in my top ten favorite songs of all time! Thanks for the post!!

  • I searched this song a while a go and there was only 1 thing on here and it was a horrible cover... thank you so much for posting!

  • OMG!!!!! I used to LOVE this song!!!! Thank you so much for posting it!

  • used to!?!?! :-P

  • Loved this song. The only thing I ever found by them was an LP with 4 songs on it. Did they ever release an album?

  • What do all the people know?... That this song is awesome!

  • I think I have this cassette somewhere. The Monroe's greatest maybe ? circa 1986ish- i remember it was white or yellow.. or yellowing white :o)

  • <33

  • some songs are written by god...this is one of them

  • Awesome tune! Really captures the mood and times of the 80's.

  • This song is quite possibly my favorite song of ALL TIME. I remember listening to it with my friends in high school and down at the beach.

I looked for it on CD for years without success (I know they had some label issues or something). I finally got it on an 80's music compilation CD called "Living in Oblivion Volume III", in case anyone is looking.

JTO - I know this song is still loved and remembered by many and I'm sure it will be for years to come.

  • I thought this song came out around 1979.

  • peep the bass player.

  • This Rules.

  • A great song that I had not heard in probably 25 years until today on the 80's station on Sirius. Thank you for posting this great song/video.

  • I read about this song and they act like it didn't get much play. I remember this song all too well,it got a lot of play here in the east. It never got played out sounds as good as it did

  • THANK YOU for posting this!!!! I couldn't find the song anywhere.

  • Awesome tune, one of the local bands in Rhode Island did a cover of this song for a couple of years in the 80's and it was always a crowd favorite.

  • I haven't heard this song in years. Thanks for posting it. I love it.

  • Hey there DJ Pete!

Tony Ortiz Here, i was the lead singer of the Monroes!

    Love this video!!!!!

I have your number, i will call you yes?

    JTO

  • Probably a dumb question (but this song brings back plenty of great memories): Any chance you'd have a live version floating around out there??? :)

  • the band not together anymore but the lead singer still plays live in san diego and LA and he's sounds better that ever. he should have a new album comming out soon

  • Ohmygosh I love this song!
