@elponchex & @metalhammer777 You guys can compare whatever the hell you want, in the end it's all about personal taste(said as being a drummer and being fan of both Mangini and Peart)
@Nathankthanks Yes, and he plays them all at different times - different songs - over the concert. Plays the ones to each side, the 18 and 26 inch bass drums, with slave pedals.
Phenomenal solo...was right in front of him when he played it. Honestly one of the nicest human beings I've ever met, and he made my jaw drop multiple times with his virtuosity. Welcome to the Dream Theater family :)
Mangini is talented; he’s a virtuoso and he’s very kind… He’s enjoying playing drum as hell…
He is very easy to approach, helpful, he enjoys helping drummers; he generously gives his major keys for helping us to progress! He is not taking himself too serious
Life is unfair LOL ;) No doubt, Mangini is what DT needed! Now DT can explore their full potential, for the pleasure of themselves and for ours. :D This is my last comment here, I will never stop ;)
my god, the whole third minute is like a taste vacuum. For example, Compare that minute with the 'similar' part in Neil Peart's Exit Stage Left solo. Mike you're doing it wrong
@elponchex says: "... Compare that minute with the 'similar' part in Neil Peart's Exit Stage Left solo. Mike you're doing it wrong"
ah HA! I just saw this post! GOTCHA! Peart 3 : 30 Solo is awesome (of course) but you don't know at all, what you're talking about! You mix everything and has no idea of the techniques that are executed in both solos (Peart & Mangini). You said you're a drummer? NOPE,
You aren't a drummer: you have too much lack of knowledge in drumming to be a drummer. pfff
Well, let's see, I'm comparing a solo section were Peart is executing rolls on the snare and adding some Kickdrum+cymbal hits in a way that is fun and exciting, and a solo section were mangini is executing rolls on the snare and adding som kickdrum+cymbal hits. The concept is very similar, wouldn't you say? The difference is that mangini produces a boring minute, The roll is more of a constant noise (as impressive as it is) and the kickdrum+cymbal notes anything but exciting.
Yes, mangini IS rolling with just one hand, which is really hard, but so what? It doesn't make the music he's creating any better just because of that.
Well, I think this is fucking boring, and i'm a drummer. Except for a couple of parts, most of te time It's like he can't avoid filling every spot on the patterns. It's just one continous maze of notes. If you start filling a sequencer like drumkit from hell with random notes you get pretty much the same result. Put this next to Neil Peart's solo in Exit Stage Left, which is actually entertaining, and it's a piece of shit. Mangini himself's made more enjoyable stuff too.
@elponchex I must say, that you are right. Except the fact that he's ist extremely awesome in playing fast, there not much interesting parts in it (the polyrithm thing ist good and the beginning when he plays on the octobans). And I say that as a drummer, too :P
@elponchex You’re a drummer and you didn’t notice that starting to 2:12 – 3:00 (or so)
It asks an unusual sense of coordination that is not given to all.
You didn’t notice that starting at 3:15 , Mangini didn't dribble even once and perfectly mastered the tone of his snare. (In perfect control when he increases the speed)
Not to mention that at 5:15 , he also executes it with his 2 feet, it takes years of practices, perseverance and so on... you're a drummer? ... hummm
Jesus, dude, I obviously know it's extremely hard to achieve that kind of technique. But did you realize that drumming isn't a sport? It's music, and of all the things you mentioned, you never qualified anything as 'fun', 'áwesome', 'beatiful' or whatever. you're just saying it's really hard to do. Did I notice those things? Yes ¿did Those things achieve any ENJOYABLE results? Nope!
@elponchex "Drumming isn't a sport " "It's music, and of all the things you mentioned,
you never qualified anything as 'fun', 'áwesome', 'beatiful' "
Me:You never thought about the SPACE?
1- Drumming isn't sport ? LOL Practice your drumming (Oups, I forgot, you aren't a drummer)
2 - As for music, fun, enjoying and so on, I sure know what it is ... I've been raised in music (not enough space)Have you ever NOTICE how much FUN Mangini HAS when he plays drum / solo? Watch it with a front view!
Wow! you're actually trying to make fun of me for saying that drumming is isn't a sport, that it's MUSIC? Also, I find it funny how you make a point of HIS having fun. Well of course he is. But.. know something? YOU are ALSO supposed to be HAVING FUN while you hear his solo, it's actually the whole point! But that's okay, just keep on rubbing your chin and appreciating 'years of practice and perseverance'. I'll listen to people who use those skills to create something enjoyable.
No, i didn't get the whole 'SPACE' thing. And I'm guessing english is not your native language, because you have some huge grammar mistakes that make it hard to guess what you're trying to say. On top of that, you write three retarded sentences in a row ('drawing for understand' LOL) and then intend on giving me the facepalm!
English isn't my native language either, but I think at least i'm not a pain to read. why are you trying to insult people in a language you can't handle?
Not trolling at all. I think i know a thing or two about drumming, and i've tried to explain my opinion with some detail (youtube's comment space is very short). I DID explain the similarity behind the concept of the two sections i compared (peart and mangini). You, on the other hand can only insist on saying 'LOL you don't know shit EPIC FAIL' and stuff like "duhhh he's playing really HARD chops", which is obvious and out of the cuestion.
@collintmay Very good point. I'd like to see one of those humans try and attempt to emulate a mere 10 seconds of Mangini's extra-terrestrial drumming powers.
This solo is incredible. "Not fair how good he is" I agree, he's more extreme on the drum than JP is on the guitar, relatively to how good you can get on both instruments. I can't make the comparison between JR and JM though.
Mike Portnoy solo were less impressive but more enjoyable I think.
But this is so insane... it's enjoyable some kind of way too...
Holy shi.... after hearing this, there is no doubt in my mind Mangini is a MUCH better drummer than Mike Portnoy (no disrespect to him, he is phenomenal as well).
@highaerials36 I wanna explain something...Mangini is Petrucci´s equal drumwise..technical state of the art virtuosism....Mike Portnoy and Mike Orlando are the same: decent playing and ridiculous useless pseudotechnical show biz..So I hope drummers stay the way they are right now..Adrenaline Mob is boooooring
I'm not even a drummer, and I can tell that what this guy is doing is simply insane. Reading his description about the times and other details just further blew my mind. What a god.
lol this is so goddam impressive :O when i was reading mike manginis info for this link on his facebook page about the times he uses, was just like...wow.
@T10041 you know.. i agree, the one he played at the beacon theater in ny the other night was SOOOOOO much better i was insane compared to this and theres no video of it :/
@T10041 says: "He's obviously highly skilled in drumming techniques, but I found this drum solo for the most part to be boring."
Me: You find this solo BORING?!!! No wonder... for asserting something like that, you never EVER even try to play drum. I am sorry but honestly, in this drum solo there are many technique and skills that Mangini is doing that asks : years and years and YEARS of PRACTICES. This solo is not only entertaining and very impressive... this solo is created by a: genius.
@metalhammer777 I have played the drums before and taken lessons so you're wrong about that. I don't judge a drum solo by technical mastery as much I do about how it moves me emotionally. This one didn't move me and that's how I feel about it. If it moved you then great, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Me, I'd rather listen to solos by Portnoy, Peart, Palmer, etc. They move emotionally.
@T10041 portnoys solos were never as musical as manginis. they were all extremely basic and never explored limb independence among other things. the only thing that moved you emotionally was portnoys cock. mangini is far better technically and has a better feel. period
@T10041 Ok, I understand your point; IMO, I disagree about MP’s solo but as for Peart and Palmer. I can’t disagree. Now, if you wanna talk about grooving, let’s talk about: Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta & Steve Gadd : VUF8aRodecM , when Gadd get’s in watch out! You said you already took drums lessons, you will enjoy this vid as hell (Groove). Back in the subject, Mangini is what DT needed. Finally, DT can explore their full potential for the pleasure of themselves and DT's Fans. Cheers
I love MM and what he's done on the last DT is very great but I still prefer MP, his style is unique, modern, revolutionary and no one has his sense of rythm. MM is a top metal drummer but MP is a top progmetal drummer, that's the difference. There I agree with thegreedome, this solo is quiet boring and meaningless, it sounds like what was done in the 80's.
never liked mangini, stilll dont. these kind of drums solos are boring and meaningless. great technical ability. but just a bunch of noise to me. Ill take Vinnie Colaiuta any day of the week over this
Wicked!!!! I was at the Vancouver show (quite a different solo, actually). Listen to this LOUD! Laptop speakers are unable to present. Mangini's frequency-specific style in all its glory, listen to this on real speakers or headphones!!!
@granadapilipinas Dude... Just the gong on the left side costs like a cheap-ass car. :) But the whole thing? You could get a brand new seriously luxurious sports car with top notch equipment for this price. And he has two of these kits (identical). While he performs on one, the other one is in the meantime on a way to the next venue. But he didn't pay for it. He endorses these companies and they give him stuff. And now that he is in DT he can dictate pretty much anything he needs.
@jimmymarquez - Mangini is everything you listed and more! For me, though, the best thing about Mike Mangini is the fact that HE'S A GREAT HUMAN BEING. He's humble, he's enthusiastic, he's thankful...and he was the right drummer for DT!
@drummerdude7318 I know, I meant MORE elegance, I like Portnoy technique, and I'm not a drummer, but I can see that MM has more versatility, especially on dynamics and polyrithmics, he can play more different styles, Portnoy is a awesome rock drummer, he's so heavy and powerful, he is so creative and has a unique voice and sound in his playing, I miss him on dream theater, but I found quite interesting how DT sounds now, not trying to offend any Portnoy fan, sorry!.
@jimmymarquez Not sure if elegance is what most fans of Dream Theater are seeking from the band... it's okay to changing the way you sound but most of the people who like an album or a band want consistency.
DT were already quite elegant the way they were already, in my opinion.
Here are precious explanation from Mangini if you want to follow his drum solo Recently I said want to go back to my drum lessons... I WILL!!! Mike says... I stay with the same themes of 7, then 5 then 7/16. All the polyrhythm’s over those signatures, like 17, 8 and other patterns, are felt in 7,5 & 7 . There you go, if you're wanting to follow it. I'm on it... right now - unconscious Mangini your God I love YOU
All I can say is - Mangini is scary. I loved him when he was playing with Annihilator. One of my favorite drummers and I am SO glad he is in Dream Theater.
I have a question for Mike - why didn't he just get a 20" Floor instead of the Gong bass drum? A 16"x 20" double-headed floor tom beats the gong bass drum any day of the week. Best move I ever made.
@drumboarder1 Portnoy had his own issues and left of his own decision. By the time Portnoy came crawling back Mangini had the DT job and quit his teaching position at Berklee. It would not have been fair to Mangini to throw him back out. Besides- the songwriting on the new album is amazing w/ Petrucci more in charge. I LOVE Portnoy, but DT is still great.
@drumboarder1 Have a cry, im indifferent to how this all panned out, but saying they abandoned portnoy is silly, he made his own choices and ruined it for himself. Dont go hating on those who decided to move forwards, unlike you.
@badmedicine102 how is it silly? they wouldnt even talk to him... instead they made it where only contact he was able to have was with their lawyers... they should of showed a lot more patience considering all portnoy did for DT but mainly because he was still grieving over the death of his father.
@drumboarder1One minute!!! My boyfriend is a true fan since 1992; he has longer years of experiences than me on drumming and recording in studio etc. I am also a fan. I like Portnoy but "A dramatic turn of evens" shows clearly that MIKE MANGINI IS WHAT DT NEEDED. Knowing that, Portnoy should deal with it like a grown up. DT didn't lose all their talent, it's totally the opposite. Now they can realize their full potential for the pleasure of them and DT's Fans. Thanks!
@bucnomore11 you ruined all credibility by disclosing that you aren't a drummer and haven’t acknowledged. I'm a drummer that went for 7 years at Conservatoire de music in percussion.
I am 43 years old: 30 years of 110 % of TRUE metalhead (Not a poser like YOU). Engaged to a drummer that has 28 years of experiences on drumming. He made at least 4 CD ... and you discredit ME because I am a WOMAN? Not to mention that my late father was born in 1926, has open mind and were a metalhead. U FAIL
@metalhammer777 shame to the kids who are scrutinizing you. you are exactly what they need, somebody who knows their topic, and has had that much experience. they should be asking you questions, not asking what gender you are...
@bucnomore11 ................If she was playing in a closed room, could you tell she was a woman by her drumming.......dont think so............go check out Hilary Jones.........and say she is not credible to have an opinion.........guess you dont think much of woman...........sounds like maybe in your house growing up, your mom was treated as the whore and your dad held the money!
@drumboarder1 .......You are a flippin turd.....on this subject I will say...first, MP did great w/and for DT..he is a very good drummer and his time sig. playing is Incredible...BUT...He is selfish, greedy, thought he was irreplaceable and didnt have the guts to just bow out gracefully......instead he wanted to map out the bands next 5 years to what was best for him......they have familys to support, and a "job" we all wish we had, to do.......as good as MP is...the better Mike is in the band!
@mikeybbdrummin I was reading your post and see that it makes totally sense... I told myself... no wonder, this guy is a drummer... and I saw that you are. I can't disagree with your opinion. You are totally right.
--in the back, but when I saw you guys in SF I could barely hear most of the bass drum stuff, especially fast double bass rhythms. There was like no slap at all only the reverberations of the drum heads. *shrug* Just saying. You're perfect for DT though \m/
HOLY F***....around like 3:14 when he starts the roll on the snare and steadily increases the polymeter while keeping the time with his right foot.......That's incredible. Preeeetttty sure those are all single strokes. Everything from there to the end is EPIC. The whole thing is EPIC anyway. Lol.
Mangini, you're phenomenal! However, don't take this the wrong way...but I really think you need to change the way your bass drums sound live. Maybe it was only because I was sitting off on the side--

T10041 4 months ago
@T10041 you know.. i agree, the one he played at the beacon theater in ny the other night was SOOOOOO much better i was insane compared to this and theres no video of it :/

@T10041 says: "He's obviously highly skilled in drumming techniques, but I found this drum solo for the most part to be boring."
Me: You find this solo BORING?!!! No wonder... for asserting something like that, you never EVER even try to play drum. I am sorry but honestly, in this drum solo there are many technique and skills that Mangini is doing that asks : years and years and YEARS of PRACTICES. This solo is not only entertaining and very impressive... this solo is created by a: genius.
metalhammer777 4 months ago 7
@metalhammer777 I have played the drums before and taken lessons so you're wrong about that. I don't judge a drum solo by technical mastery as much I do about how it moves me emotionally. This one didn't move me and that's how I feel about it. If it moved you then great, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Me, I'd rather listen to solos by Portnoy, Peart, Palmer, etc. They move emotionally.
T10041 4 months ago
@T10041 portnoys solos were never as musical as manginis. they were all extremely basic and never explored limb independence among other things. the only thing that moved you emotionally was portnoys cock. mangini is far better technically and has a better feel. period
BOOLsheet 4 months ago
Cheers

@T10041 Portnoy's solo's had absolutely NO feel. How can you even get touched by no feel?

This is truly AWESOME!!!!the solo in verona was totally mindblowing but this.......AH!No comparisons!Made me day! :)
littlefunginny 4 months ago
I love MM and what he's done on the last DT is very great but I still prefer MP, his style is unique, modern, revolutionary and no one has his sense of rythm. MM is a top metal drummer but MP is a top progmetal drummer, that's the difference. There I agree with thegreedome, this solo is quiet boring and meaningless, it sounds like what was done in the 80's.

it's great, that you doesn't find any hairdressers...

never liked mangini, stilll dont. these kind of drums solos are boring and meaningless. great technical ability. but just a bunch of noise to me. Ill take Vinnie Colaiuta any day of the week over this

Wicked!!!! I was at the Vancouver show (quite a different solo, actually). Listen to this LOUD! Laptop speakers are unable to present. Mangini's frequency-specific style in all its glory, listen to this on real speakers or headphones!!!

mangini is just mind blowing! when i saw his solo with steve vai , i understood that he was not on this planet...far from space...lol

How much does a drum set like this cost? I'm guessing as much as a car.
granadapilipinas 4 months ago
@granadapilipinas unless its like a really nice ass sports car or something... a lot more!!
druman44 4 months ago
@granadapilipinas Dude... Just the gong on the left side costs like a cheap-ass car. :) But the whole thing? You could get a brand new seriously luxurious sports car with top notch equipment for this price. And he has two of these kits (identical). While he performs on one, the other one is in the meantime on a way to the next venue. But he didn't pay for it. He endorses these companies and they give him stuff. And now that he is in DT he can dictate pretty much anything he needs.

Drum God, monster, insanely awesome, mind blowing, total virtuosity and control, man, what can I say?, Mangini has brought elegance to the band.
jimmymarquez 4 months ago 68
@jimmymarquez - Mangini is everything you listed and more! For me, though, the best thing about Mike Mangini is the fact that HE'S A GREAT HUMAN BEING. He's humble, he's enthusiastic, he's thankful...and he was the right drummer for DT!
bigbabysurfer 4 months ago
@jimmymarquez The band already had elegance dude
drummerdude7318 4 months ago
@drummerdude7318 I know, I meant MORE elegance, I like Portnoy technique, and I'm not a drummer, but I can see that MM has more versatility, especially on dynamics and polyrithmics, he can play more different styles, Portnoy is a awesome rock drummer, he's so heavy and powerful, he is so creative and has a unique voice and sound in his playing, I miss him on dream theater, but I found quite interesting how DT sounds now, not trying to offend any Portnoy fan, sorry!.
jimmymarquez 3 months ago
@jimmymarquez Oh I see what you meant! its all good :)
drummerdude7318 3 months ago
@jimmymarquez Not sure if elegance is what most fans of Dream Theater are seeking from the band... it's okay to changing the way you sound but most of the people who like an album or a band want consistency.
DT were already quite elegant the way they were already, in my opinion.

I have a question for Mike - why didn't he just get a 20" Floor instead of the Gong bass drum? A 16"x 20" double-headed floor tom beats the gong bass drum any day of the week. Best move I ever made.

anyone liking this after how they abandoned the real mike should be ashamed. You're not a true fan nor a good person.
drumboarder1 4 months ago
@drumboarder1 Portnoy had his own issues and left of his own decision. By the time Portnoy came crawling back Mangini had the DT job and quit his teaching position at Berklee. It would not have been fair to Mangini to throw him back out. Besides- the songwriting on the new album is amazing w/ Petrucci more in charge. I LOVE Portnoy, but DT is still great.
MrDaddyjay69 4 months ago 3
@drumboarder1 Have a cry, im indifferent to how this all panned out, but saying they abandoned portnoy is silly, he made his own choices and ruined it for himself. Dont go hating on those who decided to move forwards, unlike you.
badmedicine102 4 months ago 3

Thanks!

@metalhammer777 you ruined all credibility by disclosing you are a female.
bucnomore11 4 months ago
@bucnomore11 you ruined all credibility by disclosing that you aren't a drummer and haven’t acknowledged. I'm a drummer that went for 7 years at Conservatoire de music in percussion.
I am 43 years old: 30 years of 110 % of TRUE metalhead (Not a poser like YOU). Engaged to a drummer that has 28 years of experiences on drumming. He made at least 4 CD ... and you discredit ME because I am a WOMAN? Not to mention that my late father was born in 1926, has open mind and were a metalhead. U FAIL
metalhammer777 4 months ago
@metalhammer777 shame to the kids who are scrutinizing you. you are exactly what they need, somebody who knows their topic, and has had that much experience. they should be asking you questions, not asking what gender you are...

@bucnomore11 ................If she was playing in a closed room, could you tell she was a woman by her drumming.......dont think so............go check out Hilary Jones.........and say she is not credible to have an opinion.........guess you dont think much of woman...........sounds like maybe in your house growing up, your mom was treated as the whore and your dad held the money!

@drumboarder1 .......You are a flippin turd.....on this subject I will say...first, MP did great w/and for DT..he is a very good drummer and his time sig. playing is Incredible...BUT...He is selfish, greedy, thought he was irreplaceable and didnt have the guts to just bow out gracefully......instead he wanted to map out the bands next 5 years to what was best for him......they have familys to support, and a "job" we all wish we had, to do.......as good as MP is...the better Mike is in the band!
mikeybbdrummin 4 months ago 2
@mikeybbdrummin I was reading your post and see that it makes totally sense... I told myself... no wonder, this guy is a drummer... and I saw that you are. I can't disagree with your opinion. You are totally right.
