Did anybody else notice that heap had his back to merriweather? Or that heap turned in the air and fell down onto that hit? Calling that blatant is foolish. I doubt most people sitting in their arm chair talking about how blatant that hit is realize how quickly that actually happened. The speed of professional football does not leave room for deciding how to hit. If Heape had caught that ball and merriweather had pulled his hit and given up yardage he would get benched!

As a fan of the U, I'm dissapointed. That hit was completely uneeded. I think they need to do a simple rule change. Allow coaches to challenge these hits. Many times h2h never get called so allowing the coaches to challenge non-calls will hopefully also lower this likelhood of this. Many hits that are hard are clean as they go with the shoulder and try to make a tackle, unlike this hit. He was going for a Haymaker.

Hitting someone in football with the intention of purposely injuring them is just stupid. This is a sport, not mma. Anyone who knows football knows defense is about making a stop, not trying to show what a badass you are. Doesn't take much to change from a spear to a shoulder-led tackle. Meriweather could be a great player if he can mature. too often does he go for the big play instead of making a sound tackle, or swatting the ball down. his angles are also terrible at times. since i like merriweather and DO think that new england fans are a bit hard on him, i think he can make improvements and turn into a really good player.

I agree with Joe Paterno. Put everyone back in single-bar helmets. Watch these cheapass hits go away. There's no amount of padding to prevent concussions. Not unless they come up with some kind of helmet that can stop physics from happening. So you have to work fear and consequences into the defenders again. Did anybody else notice that heap had his back to merriweather? Or that heap turned in the air and fell down onto that hit? Calling that blatant is foolish. I doubt most people sitting in their arm chair talking about how blatant that hit is realize how quickly that actually happened. The speed of professional football does not leave room for deciding how to hit. If Heape had caught that ball and merriweather had pulled his hit and given up yardage he would get benched!

@unfazeable1 Would you rather he led with his feet and dropkicked him? If he wasn't leaning forward he would get knocked backwards and potentially give up additional yardage. When you lean forward and run your head is the first thing to get where you're going. The hit was illegal and a penalty is deserved, I don't think you can argue that it was a hit that resulted in helmet to helmet contact. That being said to FINE him for playing aggressive defense is what blows my mind.

I'm sure leading with his feet would've been better, or how about tackling like a YFL player, with their shoulders. Its been taught since YFL to tackle with your shoulders. If you look at other videos on the hit, you see Meriweather looking up at Heap and intentionally going for the headshot. At least he apologized for the hit, not sure if he meant it or Bill made him apologize but either way an apology was issued. Unlike Harrison, who needs to get suspended for his comments...

As a fan of the U, I'm dissapointed. That hit was completely uneeded. I think they need to do a simple rule change. Allow coaches to challenge these hits. Many times h2h never get called so allowing the coaches to challenge non-calls will hopefully also lower this likelhood of this. Many hits that are hard are clean as they go with the shoulder and try to make a tackle, unlike this hit. He was going for a Haymaker.

Everyone is over reacting to these hits lately, this is the national football league, where world class athletes play football. They signed up for this and know what they got themselves into. While this may have been the worst hit this weekend, it may not have been intentional, i thinked it looks worse than he intended it to. Hitting someone in football with the intention of purposely injuring them is just stupid. This is a sport, not mma. Anyone who knows football knows defense is about making a stop, not trying to show what a badass you are. Doesn't take much to change from a spear to a shoulder-led tackle. football is physical, it is brutal and unforgiving. but that hit was clearly intended to be head to head. This game is about combining intelligence and skill with that unforgiving brutality. But more and more players are getting into the league with only the skill and brutality but no brains. The big hits are great, if they are clean. There is no reason for a player to go strictly for the head. All they do by that is to further increase rules that ruin the game.

cheap shot alright - and maybe it is time to introduce suspensions instead of fines, but they were playing a team whose players pride themselves on trying to dismember the opposition by any means, legal or otherwise. I think in really bruising, close games like this where two really good tough teams are tearing chunks out of each other there will inevitable be dangerous tackles like these.
NFL might show their commitment to long player safety by declaring there will be no 18 game seasons.

This rule is idiotic. He was trying to separate Heap from the ball. He didn't know Heap did not have it. Football is a rough game and there's nothing cheap or dirty about this hit. The NFL is on the verge of making defense illegal. Oh, and a word about "safety"- how many players were being killed or paralyzed before this rule was in effect? Not many.
