This is a beautiful, picture perfect jump. Sotomayor was a great high jumper, but the steriod use puts a big question mark on his achievements.

Jumping 50 cm over your height is impressive. American high jumper Franklyn Jacobs would regularly jump 60cm over his own height.

As he ended his career he tested positive for nandrolone, however this does not necessarily suggest that he used it when he was at his best. Rather it would indicate that he had trouble letting go of his career as it drew closer to the end. Quite human, even if hard to defend.

When he was younger he was by far the best high jumper the world has seen.

No Javi, this is correct. Sotomayor after the record 2.43, he made another one, 2.44. This 2.44 was made in 1991, and after this record, he broke his own record to 2.45 in Salamanca in 1993

The then 20-year-old Sotomayor certainly would have grabbed the gold medal in seoul. He doesn't even look like he is in his full growth in height at the time, but that still is amazing to see somebody clear a height that much over his head without even touching the bar.
