  • what a good dog! I think he likes it!

  • Nice. One of the few covers on Youtube that nail the Edge's tone and expression pretty closely. Do drop by my channel for some of U2 covers.

  • Friend, what's that behind the bridge that you change position?

and handle all this sound which pedal is there? Regards!

  • @condor935

In short, my main processor is a Fractal Audio Axe-Fx (Ultra in this cover, but now I have the Axe II). The controls to the Fernandes sustainer are behind the bridge. Sustainer driver is in the neck pup position.

  • haha the dog is in the background

  • wich effect you use in the intro??

  • @CaIIOfGears

That's the Fernandes sustainer built into the guitar.

  • Performance...

  • Wow.

  • Is possible to do with Digitech rp500?

  • just curious about how you set up your pickups. Do you have a hot rail in the bridge and a hot rail in the middle pickup? And then the sustainer in the neck pickup? How do you like the hot rails in the quack position?

  • @KWENIG1

Correct, Hot Rails in bridge and middle. Sustainer in neck. That's how Fernandes sets up their guitars (and Edge). I don't use quack much. It doesn't have the quack like a set of vintage pups.

  • sound perfect...

  • Absolutely superb, mate! Nice doggy too! :-)

  • Infinite Guitar !!!!!!!!!!

  • One word.....Awesome!

  • What's the song you have playing the first 26 seconds of the video?

  • @TheEdge2002

Arcade Fire from Canada. The song is called Wake Up. U2 used it for the intro to their Vertigo tour concerts and then Bono starts to say "Everyone.... Every... one.... "

  • @U2GuitarTutorials Thank You! I knew that song sounded familiar.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials the everyone is by kanye west

  • Beautiful cover ! :) Dosent AXE FX have susteiner built in it?

  • @poljakov13:

No it does not. Some people have built something that is supposed to be a sustainer but it's not even close to the real thing. There is no way to model moving the string at high frequency on the guitar.

  • EDGE IS THAT U? HAHA.. GOOD JOB!

  • Dude! Awesome work! The guitar looks like a custom shop Fernandes that The Edge uses.

  • @DarkWriter31

This guitar is actually a Fender Strat that I had assembled from Custom Shop parts, and then I had a guitar tech install the Fernandes sustainer system with Hotrail pups just like the Fernandes guitar.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials I know. It looks like one of his. I have a Fernandes Revolver with the Sustainer and it's become an integral part of my sound. How would you achieve the "shimmer" sound without the Fractal?

  • @DarkWriter31

Shimmer is essentially several delays set at different times to get a repeats tone that is constant. I use the multi-delay block which has a plex shift on four delays. You can set the pitch shift up one octave on one or two of the delays. You set four different delay times and you will get a decent shimmer, but not entirely smooth until you then add heavy reverb. The reverb smooths out the "artifacts." I also put a filter after the MTD block to cut off the harsh highs.

  • hello michael after you close the page "U2 backing tracks" where I can get the tracks please is that your tracks are very useful

  • @mickyelevation12314:

Join U2_Guitar_Tutorials on Google Groups and ask on the board.

  • Greetings. You bought the kit and sustainer is using only one pickup (neck) along with the pups hotrail?

  • @RobertRiffs: I bought the kit but didn't use the bridge pup it comes with. I bought a Hotrail bridge and middle pup and used those instead. But when driver is on, it only uses signal from the bridge no matter what the pup switch is set for. I recommend a pro install it. Lot of routing and shielding required. Not easy to do. Or just buy a Fernandes guitar.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this!

  • Whats name this guitar ??

  • @Berufsrettung1: It's a Custom Shop Strat I had made from Custom Shop parts and a Fernandes sustainer.

  • Ur awesome!! Like another edge! Do u think u could do a video for mysterious ways and elevation? :)

  • Im blown away, man. Youre sound is amazing. I really liked it. It sounds exactly like The Edge. Youre really great. Congrats

  • I love the dog in the background. Great tutorial. Thanks!

  • very good tutorial thanks

i can play this song now!

  • I didn't see this comment anywhere on part one or two so I wanted to ask you if you have ever run the AXE FX directly into the front of the Vox AC and how does it sound that way not using FRFR speakers?

  • @txphi17: I don't have FRFR speakers but I do have a 1964 gray panel JMI AC-30TB similar to Edges. Go to Part 2 and I do the same cover with the Axe (with amp modeling off) and into the '64 AC-30. Almost everything I do is direct record using amp modeling. With the new Axe II coming, I'm sure I'll be relying on that full time going forward.

  • It sounds note perfect. I appreciate the technique details you provide.

  • Hi my friend! I must tell you you´re doing such a nice job wit the tutorials. I follow you in your blog. You are an amazing guitarist!!!!!! I don´t have an Axe Fx, so it would be great if you could help me to make it sound as closer as posible. I wanna now the settings of the amp, the chorus and the delay... I also have a PRS guitar with double humbucker, and it makes harder to reach the tone. I think it´d be better if i had a strato. If you could help me it would be great! Thanks for all, man!

Please first search the discussion threads on the U2_Guitar_Tutorials Google group. If you can't find the answer, then post your question on the group message board. Due to the significant increase in the number of questions I'm getting through YouTube and my limited time, I have decided to only answer questions on the U2_Guitar_Tutorials Google group. I review every post. Thank you for your understanding and support.

  • good job .. nice dog ;))

  • how much cash for that setup?

  • @nightrunning4eva :

I don't even want to add it up.

  • Is it me but does anyone have the European R&H dvd that seems to be speeded up to 115bpm and somewhere between std tuning and Eb. Or am I just tone deaf :)

  • just get my ticket for New Meadowlands stadium on july 20th, in RedZone...yes!!!

i saw them already 3 times this year but each time it's like the first time... U2 best band ever...

  • @darma2602:

Well then, see you there, because I have Red Zone tickets also for that show. Hope I get Edge's side. ;-)

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

    are you serious?great, we'll meet there so!!! i got a redzone 2, Adam's side :-(

I hope so much they're gonna perform Ultraviolet!

  • @02:02 haha funny!

  • what pickups were you using?

  • @FlameDGs:

Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, like they use in the Fernandez guitars.

  • what year is that Strat, oh man you drilled a hole for the mini switch to activate the sustainer you know they sell one that you dont need to damage the guitar.btw nice vid

  • @neobx2: Yes, I know. But I had some extra parts to build a Strat and wanted a unique real Fender C-Shop with a sustainer. It was done by a pro in NYC. We went through the top because it required less routing. If we would have gone through the back, it would have taken out more wood which is not good for sustain. Worked out well. Looks very high tech. Love this guitar.

  • esta misica esta muy buena

  • This and Kate Bush are the 80s for me

  • hey! I'm crazy of U2 could you give me all tabs of this music? either you have a guitarpro's file, could you send me this? i will give you my mail-address. Thank you! (Sorry if I don't speak really good english because I'm french ; ) )

  • @ridersurfer56:

I'm sorry, I don't have tabs for my work. I prefer to spend the time on the videos. Others have requested the same. Time is my enemy. Thx for your understanding.

  • video auto focus uses an infrared beam. It's being reflected off of the strings and/or fret board which is causing it to focus on them and therefore you're off plane and out of focus. You can use manual focus, change your lighting, angle or move back. You have to experiment.

  • @maximumimpactmedia :

    Thank you, great suggestions!

  • hey dude i like your dog is a golden retriever rigth ooooooo yea and the song is good to

  • Hi,

really great playing and a very close sound. One of my favorites. Would you let us know where we can find the backing track for this rattle and hum version?

  • @TrittSchallImKeller :

Got the the u2guitartutorials website (com) and got to Other Resources. There is a link to Am's backtracks. He is great!

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

    hm...

i just found the milan and slane version, no rattle & hum...

  • @TrittSchallImKeller :

Send me your email address by PM and I'll send it to you.

    M

  • wooooooow

    10/10

  • have searched for years for the accurate tab or vids of this song and still havnt found and in these vids i have come to the end of that search...will return for the techno details later but fantastic vids....of fantastic and difficult to really replicate songs but your doin it as close as the great man (Mr Evans) himself....or is that you in these headless shots LOL great stuff....

  • bravo!

  • Your dog is a master of second plan

Oh men you incredible play this song !

  • ..Somebody actually did it? It's about damn time.

  • Lol didn't even notice poochy in the background, btw this is awesome

  • Do you have your axed tune down a half step?

  • Yes, many U2 songs are tuned down.

  • You have great sound sound. What kind of equipment are you using pickups, amp, pedal, etc?

  • I review my set up in the beginning of most of the tutorials. See Parts 2-4. Also you can go to u2guitartutorials on the World Wide Web and I have a list of all my gear under "Other Resources"

  • nice guitar work thanks for making this

  • Could you get this effects with the Standard Axe Fx too?

    Awesome cover btw!

  • @Zhorellski: Thx. Yes, there is no difference except for CPU capacity/memory. You can place more effect blocks in a preset with the Ultra. But most songs can be set up without needed the extra capacity. Sometimes I like to add more than necessary to experiment with combinations of amps or effects, and this requires more CPU power.

  • Amazing cover! :) the ultra is worth every penny just to cover songs like this! what expression pedal are you using? i hear alot of good things about the mission pedals..so many choices..so little money left!! :)

  • @boardboy1914: Boss FV500L but only using expression pedal output into Liquid Foot controller. I also haver a Mission but haven't got around to trying it yet. Built well however and I heard great things.

  • you've outdone yourself again Michael...that was absolutely fantastic. Thank you again for generously sharing what you've learned. I've got to get myself those pups and sustainer. I'm in NYC too, btw.

  • That was amazing, sounded like I was listening to Rattle and Hum when I closed my eyes. Spot on perfect, great cover!

  • geniaaaaaallll !

  • where do get your effect pedals?

  • @TheGavio93: Everything in this song is done with Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx Ultra. I don't use pedals. The Axe-Fx is one of the best digital effects processors on the market.

  • @hiladelphia:

"Hard" is a relative term. Edge's style is thoughtful and simple, but his use of effects is complex. It's difficult to understand the line between his notes, timing and the effects. It takes time to learn, but a beginner like me can do it in time. Be patient. In most cases I'm using the amp and cab models in the Axe-Fx which goes into my Apogee Duet interface and then Logic, or directly to my video camera for the covers. I'll start using my amp more soon.

  • That surpassed awesome miles ago....

  • Hi Michael. I have to say those settings of yours are absolutely brilliant. Very good work and THANK YOU again for your didactic labour!

  • How's my favorite guitar tutor? I see you have aquired a sustainer set up. I purchased the Fernades Vertigo. Edge played with or with out with vertigo on boston dvd. I love it. Your stuff is sounding perfect man. Keep up good work. William

  • best with or without you cover! keep rockin'!

  • Comment removed

  • VERY cool michael!!!

  • Cool .... sustain from hell....gotta luv it. I would have thought he was using an E-Bow. Much easier with sustainer though. Great tone.

  • When you're recording tutorial, please write a lot of comments on the video, I do not understand English. i am from The Czech Republic

  • @honzek68: Hi. I will try, but not sure how much time I'll have. It's easier on the cover, but translating what I say in the tutorial to the screen can be very difficult and time consuming. I appreciate the challenge across languages. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to come up with a soluton. Perhaps someone can help you translate?

  • Amazing cover!!! I cant wait to see the tutorial for this, looks like im gona need to pik up an Ebow for the intro.

  • Absolutely Great, perfect....super

Could you upload the sysx file into the file section, i want to try your preset out.

    regards

    Harry

  • @TheSouthernAccent: Done. The Axe-Fx preset is in the files section of the U2_Guitar_Tutorials group on Yahoo.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

    Thanks Michael

  • Excelente pero en el minuto 5:01 no es así...

    Congratulations

  • @mapsicoriera: Thank you. You are correct. Someone else also pointed out a couple things that I did not play correctly in the lead. First, I was not playing the open D string. Also, I'm told Edge plays the 16th fret at 5:01 on the G string when I played the 19th fret. I will correct this in the tutorial. I appreciate all corrections. I don't claim to get it all right.

  • perfect! this is one of my faves

  • brilliant, one of my fave songs, and fave version from rattle an hum. can't wait for the tutorials!!

  • Amazing sound you've got going on in this. You could easily fill in for the Edge. I'm a huge Edge and U2 fan. Great job!

  • Are you gonna due a walkthrough on how to develope the tone just like you did with "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight"?

  • @TheAmalgamut: Yes, absolutely. I always do a full tutorial after each cover. I'll start recording the tutorials this weekend.

  • EXACTLY LIKE THE EDGE ! HOLY CRAP ! At the beginning i thought you were playing the Edge's actual shimmer intro but figured out you were playing it wow ! incredible !

  • Simply perfect!

  • I love it, Michael. Great work! EWB

  • Great!!! Amazing cover, you got it perfectly right. Looking forward to the tutorials.

I thing I'll have a hard with the beginning and switching from the sustainer part to the playing part at the 9-12 frets - as I am using an Ebow and if I see it right you switch the strings and also play 2 strings in parallel. Both can hardly be done with an Ebow.

I hope you give a few hints in the first sections how this part could be done with the Ebow as I think a lot of people are using it.

    Keep it going!

  • @sushbone: Yes, I jump to the B string, but Edge usually stays on the E string. I'm not playing both strings at the same time, just the B string. I find it easier to play in that position because you are closer to the position for the main riff. You can find the same notes by continuing down the neck on the E string. I'll show both versions in the tutorial. I have an eBow also, so I'll do a tutorial with the sustainer and the eBow.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials:

Yes I've noticed that in the way you are playing it. You're almost in the right position already when you play the last sustain note on the B-string. Wish I could play it the same, but I think with the ebow this is really tough.

But thank you in advance that you'll provide a part with the ebow also, thats greatly appreciated!!!

  • I wait excitedly for yr every lesson. Now, i trawl the net to learn these songs and you are by far the best at attention to detail and playin the correct notes, delay times, effects and slow and precise teaching. I thank you yet again as learning these songs has helped me give up smoking cigs. please keep it up..your uk bud ....tim

  • @tmcmorton: Tim, thank you! I never thought in a million years that my addiction would help someone else with their addiction! LOL

Yes, I consider my self addicted to delayed, modulated, quack tone through an AC-30.

  • WOW.....Fantastic Michael.

    The Intro was just amazing.

  • Great job...!!! thanks for help..

  • ive never seen the backing of the rattle and hum version with no guitar. can you post the backing track?

  • @joshtree14: Yes I will upload it within the next day or two to the files section of the U2_Guitar_Tutorials group on Yahoo. You can join for free if you are not a member.

  • thank you very much, and yes i am, and did you remove the guitar track yourself?

  • @joshtree14: No, not for this one, but I have used DVD ripping software that will separate the five channels on a DVD. One channel usually has most if not all of the voice, another guitar, etc. Sometimes it doesn't work well, but it seems to for this track. I forget the name of the software, but there are a few that will do it. You just have to set the parameters to give you separated channels. Then you can drop one and then bounce the rest back into one track.

  • if you could recomend the software that would be great, lately the website that does that has not been adding tracks lately

  • You nailed that one. I think this is your best cover. Sounded perfect, you played it perfect. This is my favorite song of all time. Can't wait for the tutorial.

  • @tcbonline - Thank you!

  • nice cover can you built a sustainer in any guitar ? or only fender guitars?

greets from holland :) keep up the good work

  • Any guitar, but it requires routing and shielding, and can be expensive if done correctly. In hindsight, I wouldn't do it again and would just buy a Fernandes guitar.

  • okey thank you :) greetings from holland

  • great tuto!

  • sounds great. love the sustainer pick up. thanks for the vid.

  • Awesome!! Best song ever made and this was the best cover for sure! Gj :D I wish i had money to buy a delay pedal which is worthy for playing this song. (got boss me-20 :S)

  • Great vid!! The sustain Intro can be played with an ebow maybe...

  • Yes, and Edge used an eBow on this song at one point.

  • great

  • Great cover, can't wait to see the completed tutorial.

  • Amazing! Cant wait for it!

  • Where would we be without you, Michael. Fantastic cover, bro.
