Yes, on paper it makes sense: he's spoiled and has a very narcissistic and showy personality, so for him this is just another opportunity to show off and play with his power. But on the stage it just seems weird.

However, for all its clichés this direction is very well done in defining the different characters. And it's not boring.

I dont think its weird...I havent seen the whole opera in this setting because its not avaibile...(thats sad) maybe it make seens for you if you see the whole production????

Well, perhaps. But actually I don't think so. (And I hope she wasn't dancing like that for the whole opera!) However, it's a bit awkward but it doesn't annoy me. And, whatever the idea of the director was, Malena Ernman does it faultlessly.
