We're in Afghanistan because we were attacked. There's not really a lot of money in it for us, we're there to stabilize the country, because if the Afghan and Pakistani governments can eventually minimize the Taliban to manageable levels in their country, then the Taliban is far less able to cause trouble in other countries (like in New York on 9/11/01, or in London on 7/7/05)

As far as "destroying the country" there was nothing much in Afghanistan. We're building a country.
