@abbr Yeh I agree totally, Loved this period, with this song also morning bell , In Limbo (live Version) How to dissapear completely , etc etc I could go on, although I have to say the live version of TKOL sounds much better than the studio version , In my opinion anyway.
I know it's a cliché to talk about someone or something being the most under rated whatever but Phil Selway has got to be one of the most under rated drummers there's ever been.
That's why Radiohead is so good. When you take the time to listen to them it is like a big discover. When I started listening, the thing that grabbed me at first was the music. I could only hear the music without Thom singing. What a state of mind that was. Then, it all melted together. Verdict= Awesome.
i got to hear this song when they came to mexico on the In Rainbows tour. I almost cried. I couldn´t believe the high quality of their live performances. It just sounded perfectly elegant and neat. I love the jazzy bass and guitar. It is amazing.
I just needed to share one thing....back in 2004 when I was writing my final exam for my B.A at university (english lit and stuff) this song was playing in my head for some reason for the whole frickin time and....I guess....I think....it helped me write some interpretations of some mid ages poems...can;t explain it but it worked.
If you like Radiohead you don't need to find a reason to defend your position, or even get angry if someone is critical of the band for their music. It is dark and revealing and even apocolyptic at times and not everyone wants to hear about grim realities. If every band were like Radiohead it would be depressing but the fact is that Radiohead continually push the boundaries and sometimes rebel against their own success. They are for deep ple who like meaningful music, &r slightly eccentric guys
@Quipert Hahaha, yes, I get that all the time. I'm usually very good at respecting other peoples' opinions, but whenever someone says they don't like Radiohead (ESPECIALLY when they say 'oh, they're too depressing'), an uncontrollable rage comes over me.
Amnesiac is one of my lesser favorite Radiohead albums. I think Kid A overshadows it too much. After all, people refer to it as Kid B since the Amnesiac songs appeared in the same recording session. Kid A will always be Radiohead's most brillaint work in my opinion. The progression from OK Comp. to that record was mind-blowing. Amnesiac has great songs in its own right, but the demented segue way tracks like "hunting bears" and "revolving doors" don't give the record a needed wholeness.
@fruscianteman kind of agree that it lacks some of the cohesion of Kid A in some ways but it's a weirder way record, less flow but more tension at times. I kinda ultimately prefer it for that, and pyramid song which alone must put it in contention for best album, that and Life in a Glass house and Spinning Plates.
Also Pulk-Pulk revolving doors is great and odd, Hunting Bears similaly gorgeous sound imo
Hot damn, it's amazing how wholly underrated Amnesiac is. I mean, you can tell just by this live performance how utterly demented it is. I guess it was just too *much for some people.
Also, I think thom is possibly the greatest frontman in a band ever. He's not in your face, but when you watch him it's clear to see he's so completely and utterly passionate and into the music they're creating. not just going through the motions like so many others. I love how at 2:47 he's got a beaming smile on his face, then 20 seconds later he's snarling into the mic with a look that could kill.
Mark E. Smith of The Fall is the greatest frontman of all time.
However yeh Thom has an incredible on-stage persona which contributes towards the whole mystique of radiohead.
It all ties together though... MES references 'Can' as one of his most inspiring influences (Tago Mago album especially) whereas Radiohead are also widely regarded as a modern era version of Can.
Great music always has its circles with other greats, thats the genius of the format.
haha I love it. it's amazing how some radiohead songs are like that. you can hear them over and over again and be like "meh... I don't see what all the fuss is about". then one a song just clicks for you. more often than not it's hearing a live version when I get the "click" moment. like dollars and cents, morning bell, and as you say, the gloaming.
There really is no other band for me where that happens, so I'm with you, that's why they're the best band in the world.
Yeah, you can listen to their albums 20+ times (Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief in particular) without getting it at all, then suddenly, randomly, you just fall in love with them. The longer it takes to get into a band, the better they are, and Radiohead took me longer to get into than any other band. I suppose it can be a downside though. It's really hard to get other people to like them...
@parasiticlittletick Yeah, unfortunately, you're right. Most people think good music is stuff you can listen to once or twice and find catchy or fun. In reality, good music (IMO, of course) is music which has many layers and is full of depth. Radiohead's music is the epitome of this, I think. Annoyingly, everyone still seems to think they're too depressing to listen to... but if people really PROPERLY listened to Radiohead, I'm sure they'd find them powerful and uplifting. Ah well, their loss...
@YorkeTchock yeah true that.. tool and radiohead are my two favorite bands! both powerful! both full of depth and very up lifting. i wish people wouldnt think of tool as some new rock or metal band. because they are neither. oh well. radiohead and tool should go down as two of the best bands ever.
@YorkeTchock I feel very identified with this comment. When i heard Radiohead the first time, i taught they were kind of boring. But i was SOOO WRONG. They i realized that each song has it´s particular experimental sound. Very original. Very radiohead.
@YorkeTchock It's because they are a musician's band, meaning they don't try and write songs to get you to repeat "I whip my hair back and forth" to nausea at first listen. They write what is intriguing to them, and that's why it has lasting power.
@YorkeTchock Amen. I used to hate Radiohead when I was younger. Creep caught my attention a couple of times it was aired on MTV (When it was so called 'MUSIC-television'). I started with the opening track for Kid A and boom.
@Exeron91 Yeah, I find that amazing too. Three of the five members have released solo work, and Ed is apparently working on some music of his own, so it'll soon be four out of five. And that's astounding, really. So many members of the same band making their own music (and they're not all orthodox solo artists - Jonny writes film scores and Thom explores the depths of electronic music). Kind of conveys the abundance of talent in Radiohead.
