My nephew was just born 2 weeks ago w/HLHS. He had this surgery @6 days old.
It's astounding to me. Please pray our baby survives. It''s beyond belief what these surgeons can do these days. I only hope our baby's struggles will be over soon, and he can enjoy life. This is such intense stress & worry. Please send hope.
@shuffler123100 Yes, they put it on a heart and lung machine to still circulate blood and control breathing. But the heart still beats a little do to elecctric signals ffrom the brain.
Dr Redmond Burke, thank you for posting this! What an amazing video to watch. I am a NICU nurse, and have worked in many different units (one being at christiana care, which is a sister unit to AI Dupont), and have seen many babies with congenital heart defects. It is amazing to see just how they are fixed! I love what I do, and it was incredible to get a peek at what happens once these babies get to the cardiac ICU!!! Do you also do the TAPVR repairs? Thanks again for posting, and God bles
@tiotutaluscas I've always thought heros were people who put their own lives at risk to save others. Our soldiers, policemen, and firemen are great examples.
@dtpark1213 As surgeons, we try to speak clearly, and avoid too much medical terminology when we talk with our patients. Our goal is to help people understand what is happening.
Unfortunately, they actually do feel pain. My son has been through the series of surgeries. He was given very low doses of morphine during recovery. Then he was even prescribed liquid percocet when he was discharged.
how do you increase the size or function of a small left ventricle...do you just move the dividing septum so that part of the old right heart becomes part of the new left heart?
this is truly amazing. I am so fascinated by this, th surgeon(s) knowledge, skill, and confidence. As a career, this is something that I am heavily leaning towards. Thank you for this video Doctor.
Simply put, the left side of the Heart wasn't developed properly in the womb (congenital), researchers aren't sure of causes but could be linked to genetics.
During the surgery, is the circulation along with blood stopped to the heart. Then how and what conditions can the heart muscles survive. Can somebody answer me.
circulation isn't stopped totally. They run the blood through a machine, i can't name it off the top of my head, and it acts as the heart for the baby pumping blood to and from the rest of the body.
You are correct. The machine is called a cardiopulmonary bypass machine, or a perfusion machine. A dedicated group of professionals are trained to manage this machine during every open heart operation. These are some of the most dedicated professionals in the medical field.
We infuse an electrolyte solution with a high potassium concentration into the heart before we arrest the muscle. We also cool the heart muscle to decrease the metabolic rate of the myocardial cells. This protects the heart during the operation. We still move fast.
omfg this was the first ever surgery i every watched iv wanted to b a peadatric surgeon for ages... buh im 15 so kan sumwan plz explain wat this surgery was about im soz i dnt really get it.... sorta in shock at the awesum ness buh OMG PEDIATRIC SURGERY ROCKS !!!
K dood, 1st of all, Judging on your aditudew of the video of the surgeory, you didnt take it too well XD. You cant just say "Im interested in being a surgeon, It takes allot, and id look it up, before you start talking. Talk to a Doctor and ask how much pressure hes on, and if you can take it. Be a lil more Mature tho, ;) No offense
if you like being a ped. surgeon, check out a japanese comic called saijou no meii. it's about pediatric surgery. a little exaggerated, but nonetheless it's what got me interested in the pediatrics.
@xxxribenagirlxxx Before you consider doing pediatric cardiotheracic surgery, I would highly recommend passing English first. It may be "awesum" but you won't make into medical school with that grammar.
How the hell are Doctos gods ?? They are Humans, that studied a large portion of there life. Anybody can be godly at what they do, Comparison to them, is crazy :/
They put the heart on a "Heart-Lung Machine" this puts the heart on a temporary stop, so surgeons can perform the procedure, they then restart the heart later.
In order to make careful procedures the heart must be stop. Don't worry, there is a bypass system that is pumping blood through out the body and keeping the baby alive. Then when the procedure is done, it heart is brought back to life.
Yes, that is true, but during this particular type of surgery, the Norwood procedure, for a short time the bypass system is shut down and the baby is put in what is called a "cooled down suspended state" where they drastically lower the body temperature to prevent brain damage. During this time there is no blood circulating in the baby.
Heart surgery and otolaryngology-Head and neck surgery are perhaps the most interesting areas of medicine to me. I've shadowed doctors, volunteered at my city's largest hospital and trauma center, and read most of the Merck Manual of Medical Information. I'm hoping to become a doctor one day. Science has always fascinated me. I have empathy and compassion for the sick. Medicine, while not the most glamorous career, is certainly the most rewarding. I look forward to fulfilling my calling.
thise is so alsome iv been whanting to be a surgeon since i was 6...im 14 now and i still whant to be one i have alsome grades in school and im willing to spend a tremendous time in school.... hopefully i save someones life one day....wish me luck on my goal!!!
