SPECIAL THANKS TO THE BEST TICKET AGENT AT TICKETS 300 IN FARGO NORTH DAKOTA!!Thanks to his advertising skills I found out I get to go see Leon Russell in FARGO!!! WHOOO HOOO!!!! CONCERT IS IN APRIL AT THE FARGO THEATRE AND WE HAVE GREAT SEATS!!!
Pianist, guitar player, bass player, drummer, singer, songwriter, session master, band leader, arranger. From Aretha & Sinatra to the Beach Boys & Stones & all points between he's been there-in fact was there in the begining, a true architect of rock & roll. There's so much fucking hyperbole today, EVERYONE's a genius, I've heard lady gagme & madonna referred to as musical genius'! Liking someone doesn't make them genius. It's mastery of their art not digital auto-tuning & packaging! Peace!
@redfishradical I could not agree more. I guess the fact that his music came from the heart (not some boardroom) did not hurt. I knew he was a good musician but I did not realize all the session work that he had done. The HBO documentary pointed that out. I must learn to appreciate these true musical wizards before they are all gone. Peace
JUST MISSED!!! "Tight Rope" just missed making the Billboard's Hot Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 12 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1972!!!
Yes, Leon (and Merle Haggard, and JJ Cale, and Toby Keith, etc., etc.) all are Okies, would be perfectly at home playing rodeos or auditoriums! Rock (and Country, etc.) on!
@myrddinistheshit. Ur comment made me laff. Tho worn now, I always thought that LR was striking to look at. Never mind that he's 1 of the most gifted songwriters that's walked the earth (hmm, yes, adds to 'attractiveness').To help pen morsels like Superstar (beautiful smashes for Carpenters, L. Vandross) & This Masquerade (a handsome hit for Geo Benson). & A Song for U, beautiful lyrics/tune that still holds up 40 yrs later. Could U even hold a lite to LR's 'attractiveness' of his lil pinky??
@myrddinistheshit He was married and I'm sure with his fame and fortune, he has had more girlfriends and dates than you will have if you live to be 100.
@theDeckisStacked I thoroughly agree with you regarding the lyrics. My favorite to quote from is "Prince of Peace" -- "Never treat a brother like a passing stranger....it might be the Prince of Peace returning." I've taken that idea as a life philosophy. Thanks for your comment. :)
I saw him a few days ago in Cleveland open up for Bob Dylan. Great show but Leon just kinda went through the motions. There was no connection with the audience really, he just walked up to the piano, played his set, and walked away. I wonder if he's always been like that? First time I have ever seen him so I don't know, but it was great seeing two living legends in one night!
@69AllDuTime Living here in Detroit, we see Kid Rock around a lot and I've thought for a long time now that just about 9 months before Kid was born, Leon nailed his mama.
I photographed Leon 41 years ago in 1970 in San Diego. He was the headliner of the concert. Pink Floyd OPENED for him! Have a look by Googling "cacheagency" Once you link to the site, click on Photographers and Collections. Then click on Jeff Allen. Hope you enjoy exploring the over 350 rock photographs from 1968-72 I shot , I'd love your feedback! If you're in the L.A. area, stop by the Steinway Piano Gallery in W. Hollywood and see one of my prints from that concert inside the entrance.
I've listened to this song for more than 30 years now, and I've always loved it, but now I really appreciate the meaning of the lyrics. I can deeply relate to this nowadays.
I use to hear this everyday when I was in 1st grade and I remembered it recently. My sister use to play every album she bought 800 times when she first bought them. I love this song. It reminds me of such good times in my life.
I have loved Leon since the 70's when I was in high school. Tight Rope and another song got plenty of FM airplay and i am having a difficult time finding it here on Utube. Roll Away the Stone. He's such an amazing musician and collaborator with everyone from Joe Cocker to George Harrison, Jeff Lind, the list goes on and on.
@MrBluesilingus Good math..but math sucks..lets just remember that we are not one of those dislikes...They suck, we know good music...along with every "like" here"...Long live great music and the poetry that goes with it! What we need is a LOve buttonK
Why can't music be like this today? We thirteen year olds who like good music have to listen to people like Ke(dollar sign)ha and Katy Perry. It's unfair...
Hey, hey...I was a kid when this came out, grew up with it...Leon is like a milestone alright...nice to hear again after all these years...he crosses over everthing...
any chance of someone posting Leon doin 'roll away the stone' . this is a choice tune from a great album. a very worthwhile wander down memory lane thanks ceecee.
@santanocci, I have that song on a 33-1/3 LP, but I am technically handicapped, I have no idea how to load it up on to You Tube. Any help for a dinosaur?
I love him on the Union but having grown up in the late 1960s and early 1970s there was a lot better out there than Leon. Just my opinion but just don't see a whole lot of good music in his past other than this one song. Of course folks who did covers of some of his songs did them more justice than he did them himself.
1972 eh? I was 11 years old when I first heard this tune, and this was a favorite that my mother listen to, she left us shortly, so i alway's think of it when i hear it, I even hated the Beatle's because she loved them and took all these albums with her to England and out of my life, great song thank you for posting it.
Carney was and is a near perfect Lp.. Always fun to be out in your car with friends and have this come on the radio in 72. Tightrope had the sound that was so different from anything else with Leon's touches on all the parts. If you've not heard it and love music this is one of the best Lp's ever done.
@judecreek2 on facebook if u type in roses for elton john and leon russell they have some great updates on what is going on from concerts and some recent pictures of Leon...
This may have been a "hit" - however all the vocal tics were part of the oeuvre previous to this - those of us who loved him before found this weaker than what the real stuff was - does anyone have "Straight Brother" to post?
@judecreek2 Thanks for that - I should have thought of searching Asylum Choir - found some other gems that way - if only my turntable still worked... Thanks again.
Oct. 2010, I just heard a great NPR radio feature on the new project UNION, by Leon Russell & Elton John. I've been a bog fan of Leon's since I was 12 years old. Tight Rope was my first album. Ironically, I took a sumer off from my film production career and toured with a circus... truly a tight rope. Hey Leon, What ever became of the great documentary that Les Blank filmed about you? The world would love to see it!
love, love, love Leon! I have loved him since the 70's! The thing that amazes me most is that when I bring up Leon Russell - usually only 1 or 2 people out of 10 will know his music - what a shame! My favorite song by Leon is Lady Blue. Back in the 80's I had one of his albums on tape and when Lady Blue came on I would play, rewind, and play again. I wore that tape out!
I used to work for an "outlaw" musician and I met Leon Russell several times. He is crazy! In a good way. Saw him recently and he has totally changed. He seems jaded and he sang all of his songs about 1/4 faster than the originals. Wasted evening. We left very sad.
@220denyse Indeed he is. I saw him for the first time in 1970 during the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. I've seen him at least 20 times since. His new album with Elton John is great. Check out "I Should Have Sent Roses". It's a good oldtime Leon song about lost love as only he can sing.
@judecreek2 Yes, The Union is great, and getting excellent critics' reviews, riding high at amazon, where Leon's Retrospective is also now selling well
To all the "why isn't he in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" people: Has it ever occurred to you that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is part mainstream pop music museum and part Ohio government tax boondoggle that has exactly NOTHING to do with rock and roll? Have you ever noticed that it's always the cool, under the radar guys (I know Leon was huge in the seventies -- I'm talking about now) that aren't getting in? Rock and roll is all about the MOMENT and award ceremonies are for Joan Rivers.
@lconeill1949 OK so it's a popularity contest. I stand corrected. You can rally the people and get Leon Russell "inducted" if that's what it takes, then all the Ricky Martin, Nickelback, Billy Joel and Three Dog Night fans can get behind them too. Great. My point is WHO GIVES A $HI+ ABOUT THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME? By definition it's about as "rock and roll" as the Daytime Emmys. Thanks.
@jon1156 Why are you so negative? Because you were wrong? If you don't care about the Hall of Fame, you don't think it's an honor, that's fine, but you don't have to denigrate other people's thoughts on the subject. I know that I will be emailing them. Even if you think it's a hollow honor, it's still an honor.
@judecreek2 You're right. I'm sorry for my tone and I shouldn't be insulting. However, I stand by my belief that the RRHoF represents everything that's wrong with rock today. I feel the same way about the Grammys and the MTV awards and the whole corporate scene. None of it has anything to do with rock and roll, and the idea that involvement in these tin pot commercial spectacles somehow validates a great artist like Leon Russell is ridiculous to me. Rock and roll is its own reward. Cheers.
every now and then a musician has a blockbuster album where every song on it is perfect. Carole King had "Tapestry", Peter Frampton had "Frampton Comes Alive", and Leon had "Carney". A masterpiece from start to finish.
@judecreek2 I agree. Every LP you mentioned was perfect! I think that pop music took a serious nose dive around 1980, maybe the last great albums were by The Eagles, Steve Miller band and others.
@HunterMann I'm a LeonLifer since 1970. Don't have to check the info! I've followed his career from his Asylum Choir days thru Mad Dogs, Bangladesh, his Hank Wilson days, country, blues, Willie Nelson and JJ Cale collaborations, and even his thankfully short flirtation with bluegrass. I've seen Leon in concert many times, from large arenas to small venues, and have enjoyed them all, and look forward to his current tour with Elton John.
@judecreek2 Wow, very cool! I have a great memory of being 13(1973) and going to a midnight movie at a great old movie palace near Seattle. Every Saturday night they'd show a cool concert film, and the audience was mostly college & high school kids, and as loose as any concert... One week they showed Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Seeing Leon on the big screen was great! I bought an old top hat the next day at a junk store and wore that hat all the way thru high school.
@judecreek2 I know! I'm seeing them tonight! I think it's so cool that Elton found him so inspirational. He always thought he was underrated, and I do agree. Hopefully this gets him out and about for the younger ones.
Thanks to the Robert Randolph marketing team I will never enjoy his music again. Thanks, you A-holes, I have seen him 3 times and enjoyed it every time, but too bad you crapped all over this post in order to mass market your "product".
underated?? Anyone who knows anything about music knows who he is> He is a legend, half of every top ten song i grew up to was either written or co-written by him. He is the best 'session' musician ever born!
I just saw Leon play this past 4th of July at Willie Nelson's annual picnic. I'm 26 and hadn't heard much of his music and I was absolutely floored by his performance, The man is amazing.
In the 70's, Leon's look and sound were unlike anyone else. You either loved him or hated him. Fortunately, I was and still am one of the lucky ones who loved him then and love him now. What musical works of art people who didn't like him missed out on.
OMG, I miss the talent there was so much of in the 70's! So few real talents these days, with skills and distinctive voices/sounds. John Mayer, Jack Johnson are only two I can think of with skills and song writing ability.
Leon is so incredible, i loved this song when i came out and i love it now. Such a classically horrible voice, but such soul and pathos!
If you like this then you will SLove (super love) Robert Randolph! Check out Robert and his newest CD that came out just a couple weeks ago!! When Robert shreds on the pedal steel guitar, you can’t help but feel the music run through your body! Be sure to check him out at (his name) dot net. You will be able to get a free track when you visit him on his sight! WoOt WoOt!!
Sad that such a talented musician has to have such a mediocre voice.

@axienemo I did the same thing. As I remember, his Oklahoma twang sounded even more "unique" on a warped cassette tape!

@ threequidd ; yep , where did it all go ???? A nice fat strawberry doobie would do the trick about right now . The world has just gone crazy !

I used to work for an "outlaw" musician and I met Leon Russell several times. He is crazy! In a good way. Saw him recently and he has totally changed. He seems jaded and he sang all of his songs about 1/4 faster than the originals. Wasted evening. We left very sad.

@judecreek2 This was my favorite album in 1972! Saw him live with Johnny Winter in 1989. He's just amazing.
220denyse 1 year ago
@220denyse Indeed he is. I saw him for the first time in 1970 during the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. I've seen him at least 20 times since. His new album with Elton John is great. Check out "I Should Have Sent Roses". It's a good oldtime Leon song about lost love as only he can sing.

@judecreek2 Yes, The Union is great, and getting excellent critics' reviews, riding high at amazon, where Leon's Retrospective is also now selling well

I love Leon's work for the new album The Union with Elton

better off listening to Lamlight by David Essex!!!
cullengillian 1 year ago
Most classic rockers site Chuck Berry as their influence. Leon probably would cite Joe Penner! (Who dat? look 'em up!)

Leon's music is brilliant. It's even better live, which is rare.

@lconeill1949 Although it might be obvious, what is their email address? Thanks
judecreek2 1 year ago

Thanks.
jon1156 1 year ago
@jon1156 Why are you so negative? Because you were wrong? If you don't care about the Hall of Fame, you don't think it's an honor, that's fine, but you don't have to denigrate other people's thoughts on the subject. I know that I will be emailing them. Even if you think it's a hollow honor, it's still an honor.
judecreek2 1 year ago
@judecreek2 You're right. I'm sorry for my tone and I shouldn't be insulting. However, I stand by my belief that the RRHoF represents everything that's wrong with rock today. I feel the same way about the Grammys and the MTV awards and the whole corporate scene. None of it has anything to do with rock and roll, and the idea that involvement in these tin pot commercial spectacles somehow validates a great artist like Leon Russell is ridiculous to me. Rock and roll is its own reward. Cheers.

@jon1156 We agree on that. but imagine the rockers that would show up at his induction!

every now and then a musician has a blockbuster album where every song on it is perfect. Carole King had "Tapestry", Peter Frampton had "Frampton Comes Alive", and Leon had "Carney". A masterpiece from start to finish.
judecreek2 1 year ago 38
@judecreek2 I agree. Every LP you mentioned was perfect! I think that pop music took a serious nose dive around 1980, maybe the last great albums were by The Eagles, Steve Miller band and others.

@HunterMann I accidentally left out Pink Flloyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". But for that you needed headphones, and a good buzz.
judecreek2 1 year ago
@judecreek2 Yes, very true. There have been some great live albums for headphones, especially 4 Way Street(Crosby, Still, Nash & Young).
Leon Russell's career has been a long one, check the info on Wikipedia.
HunterMann 1 year ago

Hank's Back(great!) Shelter egg.

@judecreek2 I know! I'm seeing them tonight! I think it's so cool that Elton found him so inspirational. He always thought he was underrated, and I do agree. Hopefully this gets him out and about for the younger ones.

It's hard to believe a musical genius like Leon still hasn't been inducted to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

@Chefdeangolf It is ridiculous. Leon influenced Clapton, Clapton is in the Hall, isn't he?
The Master of Time and Space is R&R Hall of Fame material in my book.

Just found an old album called Hank Wilsons Back Vol 1 1973. Leon made a country tribute album. Its great He is great, you go Leon,

Grew up in Tulsa listening to this man. It was special watching him perform last October in Gruene.
