i've been watching cavett since the early 70's, his interview "style", tends to be be very "laid back", i.e. ,ask questions, but let the guest(s) be the star of the show, as with ABBA here. Cavett sits back , and lets his guests be as comfortable as possible, esp. being on "american tv". as abba were .
Its a total mystery to me why Dick Cavett had such a big success with his show. Its so unconfortable to watch him. He seems so unconfortable himself. Its probably becayse tv has changed so much since then.
They are, and always will be, amazing. But you can tell at this point they were just so fed up of it all. Can't say I really blame them after 10 years!
I'd score this interview 10 out of 10. Obviously, Dick Cavette's questions are exactly those which fans want to hear and ABBA meets them head on with thoughtful responses. While tasteful, the jabs are huge fun and they show off ABBA's good nature. They were a super group all the way around.
dick cavett talking to frida about "where are your jazz roots, have you ever been to new orleans" sarcastically shows what a narrowminded guy cavett is, he believes really that the blues and roots of culture must be experienced in america - and "sweden" seems to be pretty "foreign" to his---

@royko22 Interesting take on a pop interview and some of it true, I completely agree that it is very patronising for millionaires to attempt to practice socialism as they can't... they're milionaires. Your use of the term "evil", however, is oppression in it's highest and ugliest form
this interviewer has this typical attitude some americans have whom i met - they feel superior on such a superficial level. Ignorance and arrogance make a nasty cocktail, as the group´s reaction makes quite clear!!

@The3rdHiltonSister Wow I am so jealous of your charm and your way with words! But what can we expect from someone who worships low life useless whores like the hiltons? I'm sure they are all quite used to licking stuff up.
Interesting how Agnetha still turns to Bjorn (at the far end) for the correct English word (4:14), with Benny right next to her, who seems to be equally proficient in the language and who in fact also answers her question.
I think this was they're unhappiest year (81). Escpecially for Frida. She looks SO sad singing Knowing Me Knowing You here. And they really don't interact with each other anymore. D. Cavett makes them laugh but really they don't have fun together anymore. They looked more comfortable/happy a year later. Guess the worst was over after the latest divorce then. But they were very civilized and friendly. ABBA made genius pop music and they are still BIG 28 years later.
well I actually enjoy the interview, I know it coulb be waaay better but at least they were having a good time, although Frida didn't talk to much but still her accent is cute. hey when Agnetha was saying that about her knickers and said but I was 5 so Im excused, did Bjorn said "you'll be excused now too?(3:23), intersting hehe, love the way she laughs and tells the story, her accent is so cute too...what can I say ABBA is just great!
Cavett was often rather bumbling and lost in his interviews. But let's give credit where due: he got Agnetha to tell her knickers story and gave her the time to tell it charmingly.
Cavett is a pretty cool dude, though a little smarmy or insecure on occassion - imperfect like the rest of us. He at least brings a lot more wit and intelligence to the table than your average. It's cute when Agnetha asks how to say "laces" in English.
I really like Dick Cavett and think that he's usually a very interesting interviewer. This interview isn't his best one, but he suffers from manic depressive disorder and it's possible that during that interview he could've been off, comically and professionally, due to his disorder.
It is actually painful to watch Dick Cavett interview anyone. I would have loved to see Johnny Carson interview these fabulous people who gave us such great and unforgettable music.
Dick Cavett really knew how to put the DICK in the Dick Cavett show. He was so offensive to his guests, ABBA especially-how many times did he get down on them- the last line was 'pointing to me with one of your chins'... he sounds like he's drunk.
most of the talk shows at that time had really worthless creepy hosts-Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, the DICK, Tom Snyder who had so many outrageous guests on his late night NYC show-who took great pride in 'never knowing anything about his guests'
They were also very successful in the States with Dancing Queen as a number one hit. Trust me, the 370 million records sold were not in the UK and Sweden.
Wow....I'm really unimpressed with Dick Cavett.....a really poor interview for tv....thanks for posting this, I love seeing anything with ABBA talking
I think they did very well, Agnetha is happy then too.
This man underestimated the intelligence of the Abba band members, they are all very, very bright. And Benny and Bjorn are musicians of genius level. Benny makes a very relevent point about them being grown ups not acting like children, like stars then and now.
What do you expect from a guy from NEBRASKA. Gosh when you think of the United States, how many times do you think of Nebraska? I think Nevada,Texas, California, New York, Florida, Louisiana, Virgina,ect... but Nebraska? Yeah and Dickh*ead Cavett is a prime example.
Hey, I think everyone here is forgetting that this Late Night talk show was taped in 80?-81?. Back then the talk show wasn't so damn hyper and focused on being funny funny funny. Listen to the audience, they're polite and listening quietly. ABBA is being asked questions on the fly, the interview wasn't pre-planned like the shows of today do now. It's all very real. I think this type of interview footage is fascinating. I was just a little kid when it aired originally.
I could watch this if I didn't have to listen to Dick Cavett. He can't get a whole sentence out without changing his mind 3 times. How ironic; the worst interviewing the best. And he's insulting by knowing so little about them: "Didn't one of you sing as a teenager?" They were all teenage stars.
well, first of all they were excellent musicians and not entertainers and that's why they look slightly uncomfortable... and at this point they were already tired of being abba.
This reminds me of some job interviews I've had to sit through.

They were good in their day. And so was Cavett. But ABBA and Cavett were all socialist -- which is, by definition, anti-human.
Isn't it funny how billionaires and mullionaires like these, can be all for socialist oppression of all of the rest of us?
They were evil people.

@AORMETALGORE I heartily agree on their beauty, but I take issue with your use of the word "superficial."
They are both hard working professionals with a lot of class, better behaved than just about anyone with their
level of celebrity. So I maintain that their beauty is not superficial, but indicative of their character.
