I almost never tip unless that person is actually improving my normal meal experience not just doing their job, as far as I'm concerned you cant demand that every customer give you 20% extra just because you think you did an awesome job writing down the dinner order and carrying a plate to the table.
@triburst because being paid 3 dollars an hour is more then enough to live on. If they do thier job and cause 0 trouble then you SHOULD be tipping them atleast 15%. Giving better tips is for those who go above and beyond but to short people because they did not go above is stupid and selfish. Go eat mcdonalds if you dont want to tip.
did some of you even actually listen? your asking how she'd know if they're a bad tipper. she was talking about if your a bad tipper then next time you come in you wont get good service. waiters try to be as nice as they can even though there are a lot of rude people. and its very polite to tip a waiter since they are bringing you YOUR FOOD to you. and taking your order so all you have to do is sit there. and if you say well get a different job then there would be no waiters if they all did.
I'm not sure everyone here gets the concept of a "rant." When you rant, you're venting your emotions...especially those you have to hold back and not express normally, especially to the people you actually feel like screaming at. A rant is a venting of those negative emotions. It is, by it's very definition, going to sound "bitchy" or "whiny" or like an "overreaction" to an outside observer. If you can't find the humor in that then you probably shouldn't watch.
@blackflame843 if you can't afford to tip you shouldn't go out to a restaurant to eat. The waiters and waitresses depend on their tips, if you didn't realize it they make alot less then minimum wage.
@juliebrks I never said I couldn't afford to tip. Anyway, you can't tell me what to do like there's some national tip force going around boycotting people who refuse. It's their choice to do it or not.
@blackflame843 1) If you can't afford to tip, you probably can't afford to eat out and should go home. 2) Most people don't realize that there are very few places, at least in the USA, where servers get normal amounts of pay. Instead, they get a shitty $2.13. I've been a server in 7 states, moving around with my husband. I've never complained about making such low wages because I am only supplementing my husband's wages, which more than provide for us. Other people are not so lucky....
@roguealliance And so, one of my points when straight over your head. I'm not speaking for myself, I'm speaking for those who would like to eat out but can't spare change. Not me. I don't tip because nobody's forcing me to, it's just the nice thing to do. I only tip when the waiter/tress rocks, which more often they don't.
It's a free country, I can choose to tip if I want.
15% is a nice gesture, hut it's really not enough in most cases. Back in the day I made $2.15+tips at a crappy Mexican restaurant populated by trailer trash. 15% on a $15 dollar ticket is 2.25 and I worked afternoons so sometimes I would get one table in 1.5 hrs. I made less than min wage. Plus if I had walk outs cause Biker Bob or Methy Ann wanted to stick it to the man I had to pay their ticket. There were some days where I actually paid to go to work. Work as a waiter before crapping on one.
waiters have no right to complain. its a hustling job, the same as dealing drugs you need to get into peoples heads to convince them your doing a good job.
@torridsaber I dont know what corner of your ass you pulled that premise from, but the last time I checked the waiter brings your food and beverages. If you have a problem compensating (i.e. tipping) them for their "hustling", stick to Jack in the Box or wherever the hell your kind congregates.

@parkesc21 Look, i haven't worked as a waiter myself, I've known a few people with that job and it all depends on that persons mental stability. Work sucks, but making the obligation to come in and do what you have to do is a promise you either go through with, or quit. you shouldn't consider a job like this unless you can communicate with people effectively and are good at problem solving in social situations. If your just going to insult me, don't bother replying.
@torridsaber You've never waited tables, but you're talking about it like you know whats up. Its an eye opener that will teach you a lot about society, some good, some bad, all real life. In the mean time please stay out of any restaurants, since you have no clue or consideration, that it's a PERSON bringing your food. Thank you.
@vendeta912 Don't condescend to me, I've worked as a clerk and have had to deal with shitty customers. If someone can't deal with being in the customer service field they need to find a new job and stop complaining, the whole point I'm trying to make is make the best of your job, or find a new one. It's tiring hearing about so-and-so hates their job because of this-and-that, I've met homeless people with such a joy for life while others can't appreciate what they have.
@torridsaber Condescend? What the hell were you doing when you compared waiters to "hustlers"? Try not to be such a hypocrite and maybe you wont get any backlash for stupid comments you make.

XDD I love that people are proving their selfishness by posting comments like "Get a new job" or "you don't deserve your small amount of money"...you all KNOW you're proving her point, right? Have a nice life you selfish pricks! :D
People who "Only tip if the service was great" OBVIOUSLY have never waited tables or depended on tips as a form of significan income. I always tip atleast a little unless the service is extremely terrible. The fact of the matter is that person could be having a terrible day and they're feeling a little off or they could be busting their ass with 4 tables. As long as the person is friendly I tip well and I think that should be the criteria. Friendly = 15% any more > 15%
I always leave a tip, even if the service was pretty shitty. I understand what it's like to deal with fucking assholes all day, but have to act like everything is perfectly fine.
The customer doesn't owe you any more than the cost of the food. It's not the customer's fault you aren't being paid well. You're lucky they give a tip at all, so stop whining about it. You're angry at the wrong person! Take it up with your boss.
I always tip 20%, more if they are particularly nice or something. (I usually tip extra when I order something small, like when I go to a restaurant with friends and just get soda and fries, because it's not their fault that I'm not hungry.)
I tip when the service Is awesome! not "ok" or "so so" but awesome! all awesome waiters get good tips, I love tipping my waiter when they rock. My tip for all the complainers, BE AWESOME AT YOUR JOB! Ill leave you 20% sometimes more :-)
15% is actually a really good tip. It means you performed your job to an acceptable level without going out of your way to please the guests. Greedy wait staff.
I used to work delivering pizzas in Grosse Pointe and nearby Detroit. The Detroit people would tip better than most of the Grosse Pointe rich people. Guess how they got rich... True story so this RANT is a valid one despite the anger element. Try best to give tips. I quit the job because it didn't pay the bills, much less my tuition at a college. It didn't help the boss was skimming my tips as well and I had to drive my own fricking car, getting into accidents I didn't cause, pay my own gas.
I went into a restaurant with my boyfriend. We were going to share an entree to keep lunch light to tide us over until dinner. The waitress looked at him like he was a cheapskate and didn't think we were worth her time anymore. So we tipped her 8%. She was lucky she got that.
There was this dip at the Olive Garden who took half an hour to get me a cold bowl of soup. ONE. She got a 10% tip.
Why can't restaurants just charge more for the food so we don't have to deal with the whole tip problem and so the waiter gets paid a fair salary? They do that in Japan and it works perfectly fine. Hell, it's even considered rude to tip there.
Tipping is to show gratitude towards extra ordinary service not something that is to be cynically calculated and expected to be payed, your job should carry its own reward!
I tip well if everything went well and the waiter was good, but if they suck, they are not getting a tip. I'm poor, I'm young, and people look at me already like I am not going to tip because I look a certain way. When people give me great service I go above and beyond with tips, but if you are horrible and sometimes even rude to me and my guest, then fuck you you are getting jack shit.
@MsJennyAnthem my sentiments exactly and the fact that the ranter says the bad tipper is hurting the cooks/busboys is crazy. The server's poor performance is the one hurting everyone... take some pride in and responsibility for your work. I'm not saying this is an easy job by far. But I think allot of people that should be waiting tables think it's easy and they suck at it....
@Ramsez Nope, it pisses me off when my Asian friend tries to say it's ok for her to tip lousy cause she's Asian when I was raised on being a good tipper to the underpaid wait staff who probably was tipped a penny at some point today no matter how good the service. My point is: Some people are just assholes who give crappy tips because they're cheap or they think it's acceptable.
@Ramsez But the point was that if you tip badly at the same restaurant consistently then the waitstaff will get to know you and stop trying. Your cause and effect are switched.
In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act says that if a tipped employee's tips plus the employer's minimum contribution don't equal the federal minimum wage - the EMPLOYER has to make up the difference.
I hate the whining waiters/waitresses that try to BS people into thinking that they're sweatshop laborers - it's a minimum wage job unless you're good at it. Tips are payment for performance.
Everyone knows the rich are very cheap, I'm middle class and I tip above if the service was excellent. But at the same time, Service usually sucks where I live so if your going to bitch and complain you better be a damn good server because most are average at best. People now should be grateful you even get tipped and if you have a problem, prepare yourself and get a better job! But love the video and actress Project Rant! Keep them coming!
Here's a rant for you. Why do food service workers get a tip but not other workers? There are many other minimum wage jobs where workers don't get a tip. Why don't we tip our stock boys, cashiers, and file clerks? That being said, I always leave a tip as not to be a social outcast.
@Koneesh That is how that particular line of work has evolved. Wait staff are paid a base wage -- often a rate equivalent to 1/2 the minimum wage -- and the tips make up the difference. In some restaurants, tips might be the only way the wait staff are paid.
@Koneesh a lot of waiters/bartenders get below minimum wage (like 3.50 or so) because they're expected to make it up in tips. It's not fair, but that's what happens
@Koneesh America. My friend works as a bartender in a rather high class restaurant, and she make $3.85 an hour, but she can also make up 600 bucks in tips some nights (tax free). It's a total gamble.
@Koneesh as a former grocery store cashier its easy to answer this. The only way to waulify me for a tip is if I do the following. Ask you what items you need from the store, Locate and place these items in the cart, total them up, bag them, place them in the cart, roll them out to your car, then load them into the trunk for you.
That is what would deserve a tip. All cashiers do is total up and bag then the heavy duty stuff is up to you. Waiters on the other hand do everything so you do not.
My standard tip used to be 20%, now it's 25% and I only tip 20% if there's a problem that wasn't corrected, less if the service was noticeably problematic.
Last year on my wife's birthday, we got phenomenal service at a restaurant on the KC Plaza, best service I've ever had. And we never told the waitress it was her birthday until we discussed deserts. She gave us dessert and two glasses of wine on the house! She definitely earned that 35% tip (in hindsight, probably could've been larger).
I got tipped $5 on a $100 bill one time. A family of four who ordered crab legs for dinner and numerous alcoholic beverages can honestly only tip me $5? Bull crap. I would be embarrassed if I tipped $5 on a $100 bill.
Why has the % of tip expected continued to rise? I remember when i was younger an average tip was 10% now I see waiters expecting 20? really? as the price of the menu increases with inflation so does the amount of the tip because it's based of a percentage.... IDC what people though if you are polite, prompt, keep my water full = good tip... your rude, inattentive, rushing me to clear the table = kiss your tip goodbye!
I always tip at least 20%, sometimes more when the service is good enough. I don't understand why people are such assholes. If you cant tip - go to mcDonalds.
HAHAHAA.... Im a server and business people at lunch dont even tip for the good service we give, a lot of (a certain ethnicity) like to UNDER tip, like 8% or 10%, they dont even do the standard low end 15%, regular 18% or high 20%. Although, occasionally large parties double grat, so it works out.
I'm was a waitress at Primanti Bros, and one night an Indian couple from out of town (maybe even out of America) walked in and sat in my section. They asked for menu items that were meat free (who comes to a sandwich restaurant looking for something meat-free?), and I of course showed them their options, as well as spent a good amount of time giving them directions to tourist attractions in Pittsburgh and places where they could buy x, y, and z items. No tip. :( I know tipping...
as someone who works customer service...damn fucking straight. the feed back loop also ends with getting the best service you've ever gotten until you realize that your hotel room is the one that always is filled with mouse droppings.
Tips should be abolished, if you want extra money for your service, add it to the menu price and I'll go somewhere cheaper that gives me the price of my meal up front.
@0137H4 But that's how waitresses primarily get paid. They get a standard hourly wage (mine was $2.83/hour), but tips are the primary way they get any sort of money. And when you're friendly, helpful, and generally provide excellent service, you SHOULD get a nice tip.
Also you're saying I should tip GOOD when I get bad service? Fuck that I'd RATHER yell at the manager and not eat at that shitty restaurant anymore you're probably gonna get fired anyway.
@Leadman1989 the thing is that that you should REWARD good service rather than PUNISHING bad service. if you leave less than 20% then the staff just hates you, cause there is no way to communicate what exactly went wrong without sounding like a douchebag. if you tip MORE then they assume they are doing something right and are happy when you return.
"It took you 20min to take our order well over an hour to bring us a couple burgers and not a single refill that we asked for twice there's no one else here"
Whether or not the person that just gave me shitty service thinks I'm a douchebag or not I CERTAINLY think they're an asshole if you don't like the job THAT MUCH quit. It's a business not a charity, I tend to tip well and over look things but there's a limit.
Be happy that you are getting the 15 percent. Glad I call my order in then pick it up.

Koneesh 4 months ago
@Koneesh That is how that particular line of work has evolved. Wait staff are paid a base wage -- often a rate equivalent to 1/2 the minimum wage -- and the tips make up the difference. In some restaurants, tips might be the only way the wait staff are paid.
brandishwar 4 months ago
@Koneesh a lot of waiters/bartenders get below minimum wage (like 3.50 or so) because they're expected to make it up in tips. It's not fair, but that's what happens
amorninggirl 4 months ago
@amorninggirl $3.50???? What barbaric country is that in?
Koneesh 4 months ago
@Koneesh America. My friend works as a bartender in a rather high class restaurant, and she make $3.85 an hour, but she can also make up 600 bucks in tips some nights (tax free). It's a total gamble.
amorninggirl 4 months ago

She definitely earned that 35% tip (in hindsight, probably could've been larger).
brandishwar 4 months ago
Good rant. But waiters complain too much, no-one is obliged to give a tip. A tip is EARNED.

I got tipped $5 on a $100 bill one time. A family of four who ordered crab legs for dinner and numerous alcoholic beverages can honestly only tip me $5? Bull crap. I would be embarrassed if I tipped $5 on a $100 bill.

Lol a lot of waiters with complaints. Sorry waiters you job isn't that hard and you get paid pretty well. Try roofing.

If you cant tip - go to mcDonalds.

...is different from country to country, but it still sucks when you work your butt off and you get the short end of the stick.

HAHAHAA.... Im a server and business people at lunch dont even tip for the good service we give, a lot of (a certain ethnicity) like to UNDER tip, like 8% or 10%, they dont even do the standard low end 15%, regular 18% or high 20%. Although, occasionally large parties double grat, so it works out.
rwalford1979 4 months ago
I'm was a waitress at Primanti Bros, and one night an Indian couple from out of town (maybe even out of America) walked in and sat in my section. They asked for menu items that were meat free (who comes to a sandwich restaurant looking for something meat-free?), and I of course showed them their options, as well as spent a good amount of time giving them directions to tourist attractions in Pittsburgh and places where they could buy x, y, and z items. No tip. :( I know tipping...
SlaveToTheTheater 4 months ago
as someone who works customer service...damn fucking straight. the feed back loop also ends with getting the best service you've ever gotten until you realize that your hotel room is the one that always is filled with mouse droppings.
and every other room is full. HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Tips should be abolished, if you want extra money for your service, add it to the menu price and I'll go somewhere cheaper that gives me the price of my meal up front.
0137H4 4 months ago
@0137H4 But that's how waitresses primarily get paid. They get a standard hourly wage (mine was $2.83/hour), but tips are the primary way they get any sort of money. And when you're friendly, helpful, and generally provide excellent service, you SHOULD get a nice tip.
SlaveToTheTheater 4 months ago
@0137H4 i agree.

They didn't get rich by wasting their money. :p
Also you're saying I should tip GOOD when I get bad service? Fuck that I'd RATHER yell at the manager and not eat at that shitty restaurant anymore you're probably gonna get fired anyway.
I know actress...
Leadman1989 4 months ago
@Leadman1989 the thing is that that you should REWARD good service rather than PUNISHING bad service. if you leave less than 20% then the staff just hates you, cause there is no way to communicate what exactly went wrong without sounding like a douchebag. if you tip MORE then they assume they are doing something right and are happy when you return.
under tipping only hurts the customer.
morlock19 4 months ago
@morlock19
Actual story diner old time burger like place.
