I've noticed that he and a lot of other pianists don't play the doppio movimento in simple time like the melody at the start of the piece is. As well as the 3 against 4 contra rhythm there should be 2 against three in the right hand.
@Sidowse - concerning givilancz's statement, "I can play this song all day and hope that it would sound as good as this version" - Yes, I agree that one should hear oneself playing and find one's own way into, or through, the music. But it sounds like givilancz, though he may be able to play the piece, realizes that there is a sound, and/or sensibility, and/or perhaps other inexpressible elements that he is, at least as yet, not able to achieve.
I liked the Pollini performance a lot better. The abrupt ending of the first two phrases is nasty. The second part is better, but misses power, emotion.
@vortexville its ok but you need to look around more there are a lot better recordings. i sort of think this is a bit boring according to some of the ones i've seen. i just personally prefer it a bit more powerful (makes me feel like there is more emotion)
@ilikenirvana1 Actually, Chopin's hands were quite relatively small I think :) this piece has no interval greater than a 9th (not counting glissando) You should try Liszt :) he's a nightmare and playing his pieces are impossible with my small hands that cant stretch a 10th
@givilancz "I can play this song all day and hope that it would sound as good as this version" I am confused by this statement. If you know all the keys/notes to play, and you don't have to think about what note comes next, then surely you should be able to listen to the music that you are playing and let that dictate the way you play.
I really like this interpretation of this nocturne, the agitato section is also my favorite part, though i can`t play very well, needs a lot of practice
The choral/chordal section is heavenly. Unlike some I think the tempo of that section was perfect. I feel that this nocturne is quite Liszt-ian, though not sure why.
Music played so beautifully, an artists interpretation is what makes pieces you hear over and over so unique. This is truly one of the most wonderful, clear precise renditions. Thanks to this (love 4:22 shows he is in control of this master piece) knight in shining armor for playing so Heavenly. Thanks Lisa for sharing. You find beautiful works of art that we may have never come across. Bless your sweet spirit from Muich. : -) This is one of my fave' works of art, by the way.
Was just reflecting on Chopin. My beloved brother gave me a record of Chopin, a couple of days, before he passed. Here, we are back. Life is so full of wonders, wonderful moments, remembering, revisiting, signal, signs, that all our loved ones, who passed, are still with us.
thank you so much for this outstanding interpretation of one of my most favorite, classical, composers. I love to share with my network of friends. Andreas is the nephew of one of my long-term friends, who I have not been in touch with for ages, until a couple of days ago. I salute you, Andreas, and wish you all the best for a wonderful journey. I am sure, we will witness more of your wonderful art.
the opening was one of the best versions i've heard. i agree the middle could have been played a little faster, but the end was gorgeous and made up for it easily. very good interpretation.
It's really beautifully played, except I agree that the middle could be a bit faster. You didn't really get that down into the keys, if you know what I mean. A bit more power and force would have been nice.
Very well done. I am not crazy bout the middle, think it could be played a bit more fast, but thats just personal opinion. Loved both first and third parts though. Really loved the third part. You really got the feeling of it.
agree with you there seems like it wants to speed up bit..... also not sure of the volume change into the second (middle) section - it seems to loud......
I closed my eyes and imagined that this came from a Master of the past, like a Hoffman, aledgedly still playing with passion while the new generation has given up feelings for technical wizardry.
My conclusion: no difference. Excellent playing is alive and well today.
@manuelo0230, Indeed, Mark Salman's performance shows how enjoyable this Nocturne is at a slow tempo. On the other end of the spectrum is a version by Yundi Li in his recently released series of Nocturnes (my current favorite), that shows how this pianist has the ability of playing fast but still retaining all the expressive content of the music (something that Pollini also has)
@Ernesto7608 Except pianists lack the creativity to create themselves.... The composers are the real artists. Pianist keep the music alive but they are but tools, by themselves they are like a violin without strings... worthless.
@Zarenthar That's hurtful, as I am trying to become a professional pianist. :/ We may not be creative, but we can put our own twist on things. Our selection of sheet music also says something about us....And I think that as long as we want to do something artsy, it's better than the vast majority of kids/young adults who do nothing with their lives. I feel like I can really connect with music and nature when I play. There's nothing worthless about that.
... and the "last place" is the 6th. In order to reach the finals at his age and to be amongst the best 6 in such a high quality contest you have to be exceptional what he certainly is!
as an amateur i think this interpretation is one of the best, i also think the intension of the pianist is closer to perfect than his live performance
This is--bar none--the best performance of this piece I've ever heard.

I like this version but I prefer Maria João Pires playing this nocturne...
In 1:26 listen to what he played with left hand (because many versions have g - c)
I am playing it actually and there are different versions of it...
I love this nocturne and I love the expression of this pianist!
Very good! =D
