2nd generation firebirds are heavy 3700-4000 lbs. 3rds and 4th generations are 3500 lbs. The 91 vette is a 250 hp 350ci. If the vette would have been a 92 it would have had the 300hp LT1.
Ummm why do people seam to think that 3500 lbs is heavy compared to 3300 lbs??. i have an 87 Firebird and in only changing the seats i droped my car to 3422 lbs so firebirds are not tanks they are not heavy. If a firebird had 300 hp even at 3500 lbs it has a better power to weight ratio than a vette with 250 at 3300 lbs. so with that said there is no way that firebird was pushing more than 230hp
the only problem with those firebirds was that they were underpowerd like crazy im putting a LS1 and a 6 speed in an 85' camaro cant wait till im done
@fivestringkilla I agree, "heavily" modified? Try lightly. A LT1 vette should walk away from a L98 car, but a full bolt-on L98 would stomp a LT1 vette until about 130mph or so. Reason being is that a 700r4 will not shift into OD so the F-body will continue to rev in 3rd gear well past its powerpand, and the LT1 will happily sing to 6k no problem
well lets look at the facts less weight more displacement the 700r4 transmission came in both cars but the corvette came with stronger parts like corvette servos and etc. also in 1985 the firebird only had 3 rear end optiions with 3.23 3.42.and 3.73 most common was actually the 3.23 while the corvette all came stock with 3.73 rear end firebirds almost never had a 3.73 even with heavy modds the corvette would win it not being a 350sbc but ask which car looked nicer well thats the firebird!!!!!!!!
@xXMxExGxAxDxExTxHXx Its da same person, wtf no they didnt, since when has pontiac used chevy motors in there firebirds? Ls6 and crate motors maybe but... Thats like chevy building pick up trucks and using ford motors in them. Correct me if im wrong but that just sounds ludacriss to me :/
@demonsparkx Nah, 3rd generation camaros and firebirds had chevy smallblock 305s and 350s, even the v6s were the same. Now if youre talking pre '82 firebirds then yeah, itd be a different story.
@xXMxExGxAxDxExTxHXx Damn dude haha thats guna be nuts, clocked my shit at 120 at 3,2500 rpms power to weight man. 2500lb 88' with small block chevy 350. I hate posi tho always blowin out haha then ur stuck wit a one tire fryer XD
@demonsparkx ok yes all the motors used in the 82-92 camaro and firebirds were all the same type engines all firebirds from 82-92 had chevy small block engines or SBC for short they cam in 305-350 and the 350 could be stroked to a 383 by using a crankshaft from a 400 pontiac made thats what made it great even to this day because if you find engine parts for a camaro you know right away they will work in your firebird. I have a 84 trans am with a 350 sbc stroked to 383stroker w
I love C4s alot first and foremost my favorite Vette. But also i love 3rd gen Trans-Ams and Iroc/z28s etc. My dad had a 91 z28 with a 350 he said any pre 92 vette he raced on the street he beat. So maybe the camaros and Trans-Ams were geared quicker for acceleration. Theres a motorweek vid on here of an 88 or 89 vette and they said iroc of same year had faster acceleration. Who knows?
tell me something I dont know. While your at it, dont forget the Lt5 ZR1. My neighbor had one of those, in black with red lettering. VERY nice car. I dont see this race being significant.
Actually it lost because its most likely a TBI or TPI 305, its not a ta.. just a bird. The Vette has a LT1. No comparison between the motors. I say the bird needs an LSX and t56 or 4l60E
@MrRobGT the 80s vette had the l98 or the crossfire 350 and niether of those where anything like the early 90s lt1 vette engines just the same bore and stroke tpi 305 and tpi 350 both made 230-240hp
Indeed. That year model vette had about 245 rearwheel horses, tight horses taht are blast to drive but still just 245. Both actually weight about same too, something between 1500-1600kg. If that firebird really had 300Hp (on rearwheels), it should have smoked it unless there was something wrong. If flywheel horses then it should have been very even match.
Yes. If both are equipped with same engine (firebird stock heads swapped to aluminum corvette heads) Vette still wins I think. But still if this is heavily tuned fbird we are talking about (claimed 300hp) and even if the gear and rear ratios are not as aggressive as in vette I really believe that stock vette would have had no chance.
@654378900 That;s exactly what i was thinking when i saw this vid. It;s like at 3500 pounds with all that sheet metal. They basically have the same 350 motor.
@jimmykudo23 lol you dont read do you? the guy even says his firebird is a 305 and the corvette is 350 by the way the corvette is 350TPI tuned port injected and the firebird is a 305 carb very big difference when it comes to output and displacement its not only the weight we are talking about to completely different motors
@654378900 The Trans Am's are much heavier then the Formula 350. The 350 would have stood a way better chance because it doesn't come with all the Loaded Extra's, ie- Air Bag, Power Windows, Air Conditioning.
@654378900 No it didn't. Those two damn cars are within a couple hundred pounds of each other(that's based on published curb weights, not a redneck guess), so if that Firebird had all the imaginary horsepower it was supposed to have, it should have stayed right with the Vette. Looks a lot more like the factory LG4 305 with all of 165hp.
@WhoSaidTyler Is almost as fast as the Vette, his tires don´t look standard size precisely... I would say that TA has at least 300 hp.That sould put him right there with the ´91 firehawk. That vette is a 330 hp LT1(and could be modified), that´s no joke and also is lighter, not shame to that gorgeous lookig TA in losing with the Vette.
I agree with M44resto. I'm also a member there. Depending on Carb/TBI/TPI made a lot of difference but it ranged from 170-240hp on the 305 stock. 350 Was the ones around 290.
Really these days it doesnt matter what you buy, anything can be modded to whatever performance level suits you, you're just buying the look of the car, LOL, Vette, Camaro, Trans Am, just gotta settle on what you want it to look like (im a Trans Am guy myself, ironicly currently owning a 91 Camaro, LOL)
I like the 305 engine though, probly the most under rated engine in history, few small swaps and these thigs can get pretty beasty, and keep damn good MPG all while being a lighter small block
for the money you lay down buying a vette you could mod up a bird or a maro and make it wayyy sicker. don't get me wrong, i love vettes, but i have a thing for formulas, trans ams, and camaros... idk why. i don't even care if they aren't as fast, i just love the cars.
ya a stock 350 will still beat a pretty modded 305, 305s just dont have enough even if u put a shit ton of money into them. my 350 pickup beat a decently modded 305 bird. a cool setup for a 305 would be twin turbo haha no one would expect that.
how the fuck is that bird heavily modified and still only makes 300 hp? i had a 91 f-bird formula and it was stock... i put it on the dyno and it had 312 hp...
5.0 v-8 91 Firebird Formula... i swear to god. i would show you the dyno test if i could. i'm not a loser without a life, i have no reason to lie about how much hp a car i had made. thats just idiotic.
it was the loudest shit ive ever heard... sounded real nice too. i hit about 150.. but let off after that because my friend forgot to lock on my t top and it flew off disintegrating when it hit the road. :/
btw dude, i'm pretty positive the stock 8 cylinder formulas made 285, not 240.
i can't find the hp listing for a 91 formula, but i remember looking at many f birds and they had 305s like mine did, and they had the hp listing, most being around 300, but all being at LEAST 285 STOCK. btw, i know damn well my formula had 312 and not 240.. my truck has about 240 and it didn't even come close to my formula. i raced and beat several cars in that bird.. i believe i 0-60'd it in about 5 seconds..? anyways, that car hauled fucking ass and purred like a kitten. do trust.
Go to 3rdgenDOTorg. they give you the horsepower numbers for each year and are dedicated to the 3rd generation Firebirds and Camaros that I am also a member of. The 305 never made more than 230hp. You're just bullshitting or making it up because you don't know. I own a Formula, I know what they make. It's nothing close to 300hp. Come on man, if you're gonna lie, at least make it believeable and know what you're talking about. All you have to do is look it up to see it's false.
@M44resto I love C4s alot first and foremost my favorite Vette. But also i love 3rd gen Trans-Ams and Iroc/z28s etc. My dad had a 91 z28 with a 350 he said any pre 92 vette he raced on the street he beat. So maybe the camaros and Trans-Ams were geared quicker for acceleration. Theres a motorweek vid on here of an 88 or 89 vette and they said iroc of same year had faster acceleration to 60. Who knows?
its kinda funny all of you arguing over a video when in all actuality you can push over well over 300 horses with a 305 did you ever think that maybe it had something to do with how light a corvette is nope oh well
@ dgk990: the Trans Am driver is maybe just racing against the corvette to see how much faster the Corvette is... Not everyone who races allways thinks he will win.
A relocated and new (recalibrated ) MAT sensor, cold air intake (on many models it's easy with some aluminum bending and rivets) and overriding the A/C compressor pressure switch to allow the main cooling fan to turn on below 45mph far before its normal 218 degree factory preset. Replacement fan motors are $27, let it run! After all that and Walker SS dynaflows I probably picked up 50+ smog legal ponies with no more brittle and cracked wiring harnesses from underhood heat on the vette.
Don't be silly, his description compared to what I see in the clip is dead on. (I have owned an '85 TA, and have owned an '86 Z51 L98 vette for 20 years now) Stock for stock the vette positively flogs the bird. He claims modest gains for alterations on the bird so what we see is less of a flogging.
It should be noted that the dumbest kid on the block with a stock TPI GM product should have invested a couple hundred bucks and a little time and got the 10-15% gains from a duct airfoil... ctd'-
you are lying about something, either the vette was actually modded or the bird was alot less modded than you say. the engine sounded stock to me and it definitly was forced induction so i doubt the bird had over 220 hp
the video description is wrong, first of all a stock 91 corvette has much less than 300 horsepower, second listen to the firebird, it never got over 4500 rpm's i bet, there is NO WAY that 305 had 300 hp, if you rebuild those engines with all performance parts you'd be lucky to get 250hp, those were 145-165 hp stock engines.
actually skidontrk is right. according to pontiac that is. in 92, the last year for the 305 in a t/a, it was rated at 235hp, and in 1982 it was 145hp. also go look up a 81 or 82 vette while your at it. i know my 89 2.8L V6(135hp) had a quicker 0-60 time than the 81 vette with a V8, and my firebird was rated at 10.1 seconds to 60. i have seen the ratings on t/a's for every year from 82 up on every model and can back it up. also studied a book about vettes with rating from every year produced.
145-165? No. Those are late '70's pigs, like my '79 formula- Chilton listed as 305 2bbl 150hp. With most SB chevy HP is deceiving as torque figures vs HP are higher- the SB engine is torquey as hell down low but gasps as low as 4000 in some- HP is a complex calculation involving torque times the speed its peak occurs at. Ford's SB in contrast has less torque down low but peaks and revs at a higher RPM. HP for HP equal? Chevy wins, often because fordboy sees chevy get the jump and backs off.
Slow?!?! lol i have a 1985 firebird, and i can race a basic 07 mustang, and just enough power to beat that thing, i love driving my firebird and seeing those white ass kids thinking they are black gangsters driving wit their fixed up cars thinking thye go fast and i beat them in a sec. but the truth is, pretty muc ALL FIRE BIRDS ARE FAST! fuckin retard.
your bragging because you can beat a mustang? wow...my 74 trans am would beat all of them too. And no not all the firebirds are fast. 1st generation, 2nd generation, but the 80's firebirds were not that fast dumbass
what do u think im supporting the vette? i live funking 2 minutes away from the corvette plant the only place in the world where they are made. im hate them i see them too much and they are overrated. i am just saying the 80's was the worst year for the fbird and thats what they had racing
Actually the Corvette is mine, not the Firebird, so no idea:-) Meanwhile th Corvette got heavily modified as well, as soon as I have some videos I'll post them.
@balyka if its yours run that shit strait up. hookings part of racing. if it cant hook and the other can your slower in the qr. dead stop race it. 20 rolls are for rice. nice vette tho
ha ha he said rice-style... meaning japanese i suppose lol
i have a 1985 firebird, t-top as well. and 2 other cars. but im gona hook up my bird, but not sure how i want it. i have a v6 3.5 liter right now, i want it to sound mean and grimey, message me for pointers, thanks
Shouldve took all that "heavy modifying" money and bought a 350 or ls swap

2nd generation firebirds are heavy 3700-4000 lbs. 3rds and 4th generations are 3500 lbs. The 91 vette is a 250 hp 350ci. If the vette would have been a 92 it would have had the 300hp LT1.
Either way a 350ci vs 305ci , 350 wins.

@mattspontiacta Thanks for the common sense to know that 3rd gens are not that heavy and that it was only engine making the vette run away.

ya a stock 350 will still beat a pretty modded 305, 305s just dont have enough even if u put a shit ton of money into them. my 350 pickup beat a decently modded 305 bird. a cool setup for a 305 would be twin turbo haha no one would expect that.
Whitemexican 2 years ago
how the fuck is that bird heavily modified and still only makes 300 hp? i had a 91 f-bird formula and it was stock... i put it on the dyno and it had 312 hp...
followhertrailoflies 2 years ago
Amazing story considering the formulas only made around 240 at the crank with a 350.
M44resto 2 years ago
5.0 v-8 91 Firebird Formula... i swear to god. i would show you the dyno test if i could. i'm not a loser without a life, i have no reason to lie about how much hp a car i had made. thats just idiotic.
it was the loudest shit ive ever heard... sounded real nice too. i hit about 150.. but let off after that because my friend forgot to lock on my t top and it flew off disintegrating when it hit the road. :/
btw dude, i'm pretty positive the stock 8 cylinder formulas made 285, not 240.
followhertrailoflies 2 years ago
i can't find the hp listing for a 91 formula, but i remember looking at many f birds and they had 305s like mine did, and they had the hp listing, most being around 300, but all being at LEAST 285 STOCK. btw, i know damn well my formula had 312 and not 240.. my truck has about 240 and it didn't even come close to my formula. i raced and beat several cars in that bird.. i believe i 0-60'd it in about 5 seconds..? anyways, that car hauled fucking ass and purred like a kitten. do trust.
followhertrailoflies 2 years ago

Who knows?
TheC4vette 1 year ago
thas true lol if it wus heavily modified the vette wudnt have 1 i have a stock irock z n i think it gets about 300 hp lol
abearmuthamutha 2 years ago
your stock Iroc doesnt even make 200 to the wheels. at the most it has 245 flywheel hp.
firechicken76 2 years ago
that's the sad thing. cars lose a bit of HP from the fly wheel till the back tires. it sucks.
4431prw 2 years ago
are these two cars automatics?
kinda slow race for muscle cars
MajestikSkillz 2 years ago
sorry i meant firebird not camaro
84ls1bird 2 years ago
you arent making 300hp to the wheels if that stock vette just pulled on you.
stock vettes ran mid 14's if the 305 camaro had 300hp it would be in the low 13's and would of killed that vette.
84ls1bird 2 years ago
Heavily modded 305 is still a 305...you spend 1500 on a 350 you can get way more hp to the tires...
Deredrum 2 years ago
my dick is bigger than all of yours xD

what dick would that be? LOL jk dude
MXHondas230 2 years ago
haha that made me laugh, i honestly dont remember the reason i said that... :/

300 hp in the trans isnt very modded. i would say only like $1500 if u can do ur own work
BLACKPOWER707 3 years ago
Lets think this through a bit longer.
FIRST, lets get a weight comparison between the vette and the bird..
My two year old son could tell you that the bird weights a shit loud more then the vette.
zerkk1 3 years ago
and your 2 year old son is wrong :)
look up the weights
91 camaro with a 305 and a 5 spd is right around 3300 that vette is about 3288
you my friend get the dunce cap for a day.
HONDA5755 2 years ago
lol you just your shit handed to you buy a honda guy lol
KBDB91 2 years ago
its kinda funny all of you arguing over a video when in all actuality you can push over well over 300 horses with a 305 did you ever think that maybe it had something to do with how light a corvette is nope oh well
p.s. get a life
beanen 3 years ago
are you saying a 305 and 350 weigh different? THAT is kinda funny lol
Justinfloogie 2 years ago
im pretty sure hes stating the car in general is lighter.which isnt true although the camaro/ta's were GM's cheap alternatives to buying a vette.
average f body weight - 3350 lbs
average early 90 vette weight is about 3288
the cars weigh the same. its the way they get the power to the ground , plus the vette has a 350 so thats a big factor too
HONDA5755 2 years ago
That Firebird look good as hell.....
EIGGER85 3 years ago 3
what kind of rims are on that firebird? those are badass.
suprbird 3 years ago
the guy in the trans am is a total idiot thinking he can beat a corvette...he would have beaten him if he would have had a formula 400ci
dgk990 3 years ago
@ dgk990: the Trans Am driver is maybe just racing against the corvette to see how much faster the Corvette is... Not everyone who races allways thinks he will win.
muscle1983 3 years ago 3
I SERIOUSLY doubt that an 85 305 is putting out 300 hp... doesn't even sound like he changed the cam...
I love both of these cars... but come on...
smells like a couple of basically stock cars to me...
superstar1701e 3 years ago 2
A relocated and new (recalibrated ) MAT sensor, cold air intake (on many models it's easy with some aluminum bending and rivets) and overriding the A/C compressor pressure switch to allow the main cooling fan to turn on below 45mph far before its normal 218 degree factory preset. Replacement fan motors are $27, let it run! After all that and Walker SS dynaflows I probably picked up 50+ smog legal ponies with no more brittle and cracked wiring harnesses from underhood heat on the vette.
batvette 3 years ago
Don't be silly, his description compared to what I see in the clip is dead on. (I have owned an '85 TA, and have owned an '86 Z51 L98 vette for 20 years now) Stock for stock the vette positively flogs the bird. He claims modest gains for alterations on the bird so what we see is less of a flogging.
It should be noted that the dumbest kid on the block with a stock TPI GM product should have invested a couple hundred bucks and a little time and got the 10-15% gains from a duct airfoil... ctd'-
batvette 3 years ago
you are lying about something, either the vette was actually modded or the bird was alot less modded than you say. the engine sounded stock to me and it definitly was forced induction so i doubt the bird had over 220 hp
skidontrk 3 years ago
the video description is wrong, first of all a stock 91 corvette has much less than 300 horsepower, second listen to the firebird, it never got over 4500 rpm's i bet, there is NO WAY that 305 had 300 hp, if you rebuild those engines with all performance parts you'd be lucky to get 250hp, those were 145-165 hp stock engines.
skidontrk 3 years ago
are you KIDDING me? my 305 TPI has 240 horsepower. Completely stock except flowmaster mufflers. 145 hp stock...pshhaaaa
XxXFPSDougXxX 3 years ago
i didnt say every 305 on the planet was 150hp, but this one is, look it up, a fact is a fact. how did you measure it anyway? a good guess?
skidontrk 3 years ago
actually skidontrk is right. according to pontiac that is. in 92, the last year for the 305 in a t/a, it was rated at 235hp, and in 1982 it was 145hp. also go look up a 81 or 82 vette while your at it. i know my 89 2.8L V6(135hp) had a quicker 0-60 time than the 81 vette with a V8, and my firebird was rated at 10.1 seconds to 60. i have seen the ratings on t/a's for every year from 82 up on every model and can back it up. also studied a book about vettes with rating from every year produced.
timmypstyle 3 years ago
145-165? Chevy wins, often because fordboy sees chevy get the jump and backs off.
batvette 3 years ago 2
lol look at you idiots arguing which is better... same engines guys! vette is lighter... yea they are both slow so wut
Nater36 3 years ago
There is no contest between any Firebird and Vette. Firebirds are pony cars, Vettes are a step up.
ThePurpleGang 3 years ago
that wasnt really a fair race... 80 models firbirds are garbage. get a stock 1974 corvette a stock 1974 trans am then itll be a different outcome.
oilerman31 3 years ago
yea or why not race the moon against Jupiter, THEN it will certainly be a different outcome..
Energonorama 3 years ago
ya really? FUCK off, that your crappy opinion.
in my opinion 82-92 firebirds are really good looking and can go fast if you do the right things to them :-)
urmomonmy 3 years ago 4
they are ugly as fuck and are slow as fuck im sorry but that is the truth.
oilerman31 3 years ago
Slow?!?! lol i have a 1985 firebird, and i can race a basic 07 mustang, and just enough power to beat that thing, i love driving my firebird and seeing those white ass kids thinking they are black gangsters driving wit their fixed up cars thinking thye go fast and i beat them in a sec. but the truth is, pretty muc ALL FIRE BIRDS ARE FAST! fuckin retard.
sumchiconthenet 3 years ago 2
your bragging because you can beat a mustang? wow...my 74 trans am would beat all of them too. And no not all the firebirds are fast. 1st generation, 2nd generation, but the 80's firebirds were not that fast dumbass
oilerman31 3 years ago
lol ok
sumchiconthenet 3 years ago
perhaps it was a 305, go get a 350 gta and race a ugly vette. vettes dont have rear seats, thats crap. where would all chicks be?
DarkTomte 3 years ago 3
what do u think im supporting the vette? i live funking 2 minutes away from the corvette plant the only place in the world where they are made. im hate them i see them too much and they are overrated. i am just saying the 80's was the worst year for the fbird and thats what they had racing
oilerman31 3 years ago
thats why theres a big hood hahah
leanhotcouple 3 years ago
for a 350 engine hahaha
DarkTomte 3 years ago
No way that firebird just lost to that Corvette. Heh ... my mom's G6 will beat a stock Tuned Port. No way that Firebird puts out anywhere near 300.

i'm trying to find a ws6 T/A prolly 2000-2001 for year they awesome :P

i would too. any year that a Vette has made, T/A kciks ass. I would also prefer a T/A over a Camaro.

Actually the Corvette is mine, not the Firebird, so no idea:-) Meanwhile th Corvette got heavily modified as well, as soon as I have some videos I'll post them.

You can't put a 305 against a 350. Do a say 89 350 vette and 90 350 fbird, the bird wins

that bird is heavy
