I once made a full scale model of the solar system in a CAD drafting system. Zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom oh i think i see a dot. Truly puts things in perspective lol. Thank you for sharing this. I had never seen that image.
It should be noted that most of the nebulae were named in the early and middle 20th century, when only lower resolution photos were available. Higher resolution images tend to ruin a lot of the visions which inspired the names, much as viewing stars in a really dark place seems to wash out the constellations in the sheer number of stars visible. The antenna, ant, cat's eye and other nebulae names make a lot more sense when seen at lower resolution.
"The Pale Blue Dot" is my favorite of Sagan's videos. It beautifully encapsulates the human condition--that we are alone in this solar system and there is nobody to solve our problems for us when we screw up. There is no god, no higher power, no sky daddy with a magic wand, nothing. If the world is to become a better place, then it is up to us to make it so. If we can't, then our species is doomed.
I wanted to post this as a video response to this video but it didn't work - or I didn't do it properly. I found this shape in a Hubble image. Thought you might want to see... yeah it's just pattern finding, I know :D
/watch?v=32R2CJJ0qOQ I found this earlier today in a Hubble image... so I put it in a video calling it Romulus and Remus in space. It's so obviously Romulus and Remus to me... or at least a kind of a dog/wolf shape and two blobs :D To me it's clear as crystal though :)
well religeon might be true it might not i just lay back andbe happy im here but some ppl feel safe and happy when the have a religeon and i respect them.
@LinkStrikesBack - I wasn't planning to get into a debate, that's why. Big bang = 'innfitesimal regeon, or a dot that came from nothing, so = 0+0=9999999999r, which to my mind is illigical. I don't see how random chance can be the default answer. Something always had to exist before time and an infinite God not bound by time is more logical than nothing or a spec of dirt..that came from nothing.
So you didn't mention religion but I was right and its your answer anyway? mark me as unsurprised. I'd argue it with you but theres never a point with someone using *god* as an answer because the entire point of religions is its based in not disprovable - yet unprovable ideas, the exact opposite of a science
@LinkStrikesBack - Depends what you class religeon as, bondage is a good defenition, a relationship with the creator isn't. There are many proofs, people choose not to accept them, prophecy being a good one. Each to there own. 0+0=0, not 999999999999r
@LinkStrikesBack: I find it amusing how religious people still try to attack scientific claim when all they have to support their claims is essentially what others have assumed in the past. As Christopher Hitchens said: "what can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.".
@sparkshot: Your ignorance regarding the Big Bang theory is evident. Your understanding of randomness suggest you havent successfully completed essential math courses, and your assumption that "something" or "someone" always had to exist before time is an adventured assumption to be made when all you have to support your claim is a book written by primitive minds from the time it was believed that the earth was flat, and that it was the center of the universe, and slavery was alright.
@noblessus - YAWN, man this is so old now. I know alot about the big bang and evolution, i used to be an evolutionist for over 10 years, now I reject it not only due to beliefs but also due to TONS of science that is often swept under the carpet. Believe what you want, I believe in an intelligent God. Your God or mighty one however is a dead rock, go figure.
@sparkshot: Well... Its always the same with religious ppl who claim they have gone from science to religion. They say science didn't have enough evidence... so they look back to religion, which ironically has no evidence at all. There is so much evidence that supports evolution today that it is already considered a fact even by reputable religious scientists like Ken Miller.
I haven't left science. "You referred to the Big Bang as "a dot that came from nothing" which is not what the theory says; its what religious ppl are told to repeat to try to discredit the theory." - I've read it myself in the text books, also depends whgich you read. '0=+1-1', yeah, 0.
@sparkshot: Textbooks may use simple concepts to try to present the material to the students. But later on in more advanced course is when the whole picture is presented. Still I would like to know what is the tittle and author of textbook you are reffering to.
Can't remember to be honest, there's a few of them. Some teach big bang comes from nothing, others teach an infitesimal region, which is still 'something' , which had to come from somewhere if it did. I use more than books in my learning however.
@sparkshot: You referred to the Big Bang as "a dot that came from nothing" which is not what the theory says; its what religious ppl are told to repeat to try to discredit the theory. The real cause of the big bang is yet unknown although there are a few hypothesis, you also made an illogical mathematical comparison for the Big Bang, a more accurate one would be 0=+1-1.
Your still trying to say 0 = something. starting with'0=' then going, +1 before you then remove the 1 to equate to nothing again doesn't mean 0=999r. 0+0=0 , go ask a kid in school.
@sparkshot: No, you dont necessarily have to start with zero, you are only viewing that equation from an arithmetic point of view, try to view it from an algebraic point of view, like 0=x-x. Regardless of the final evaluation of the expression on the right; x is still equal to something. Its a very simple example that shows how something can exist while still equating to nothing, a more complicated and interesting equation would be e^(i*π)+1=0.

Brilliant video. I particularly like the last part [4:34] where earth is but a dot from billions of miles away but, I have to disagree with one word she said. This doesn't show how insignificant we are, on the contrary; To us, time and size matter, but to ALLAH, the creator of them both, they don't. HE created everything and gave us brains and hearts pumping with life to encompass from the tiniest atom or creature in our planet to the greatest galaxy in that seemingly endless universe.
@KryptonKyote Astronomy is the study of Stars etc... Astrology is relating to the Star constellations etc to life situations (basically believing that the stars and galaxies contain infomation about life of earth)
Congratulations one more time for this excellent video, and a big "thank you" for doing it. And yes I do find romantic talking about the anniversery of the Voyager mission, and the photo of our "blue dot". A warm "hello" from Athens, Greece.
Sorry for the blah, just alot of comments saying 'religious nuts,' just thought I'd point out it was a Muslim who invented the Scientific Method, I don't band athiests in the same group as Stalin, so don't band muslims and other religious types to an extreme minority, enough of politics etc! Hug time! Cool vid but watch out these images are colour 'enhanced' but they are spectacular.
Actually the Qu'ran is far from what I would call scientific. The comments made in it are scientific in nature, but offer no detailed information, it's all rather vague. With all due respect, anyone could have come up with it. It is true however that science did start in the middle east, unforuntately the power of religion saw an end to all that.
"It is not faith in Islam that first guided my steps, but simple research for the truth. [What led me to this conviction was the fact that it would be unthinkable] for a man of Muhammad's (P.B.U.H) time to have been the author of such statements on account of the state of knowledge in his days." ~ Dr. Maurice Bucaille, an eminent medical scientist and a member of the French Academy of Medicine. He is the author of the book entitled "The Bible, The Quran and Science."
Personally I think science started in Africa but having decimated there history cant account for much (all sides guilty). Please don't confuse Christianity with Islam, Islam has always had a strong scientific basis, to seek knowledge from cradle to grave. It is the corrupt priests & popes serving themselves who distorted the Bible which is why it is at such odds with science, unlike the Qu'ran however.Qur'an (sura 51, verse 47) "The heaven,We have built it with power.Verily.We are expanding it."
Just google 'Science & Islam' or check out wikipedia. Sorry but to say anyone could have come up with it is a fallacy, how could someone 1400+ years ago know of the expansion of the Universe and other such things without the scientific method to prove it. Not a single scientific statement made in the Qu'ran has been disproven to this day and I'd welcome you also to find one. Sorry but it seems to me you have already made your mind up before even reading the Qu'ran, not exactly open-minded.
Please quote a caption from the Qu'ran which explicitly describes the expansion of the Universe?
The quote you have mentioned does not count. If I say "I have read a book, and it has expanded my mind", does that mean my head has physically grown? NO.
The belitting tone of your analogy goes to show your prejudice, having judged before researching the subject at hand, hardly open-minded and interlectually honest. Using deductive logic we can clearly see the scientific basis. However, as Albert Einstein said, rather then adopting the 'crusading' (Ironic no?) addtidtude of the athiest, prefer to adopt an attidtude of humility given our knowledge of this universe is described weak at best, barely scratching the surface.
So concerning the quote at hand, 'The Heaven...' What do you think it could be describing? Obviously not a human head, as opposed to using analogies which do not count and if you were to read it within the context it was described you'd get a better picture. Of course without knowing a single word of Arabic and never studying the Qu'ran with an open mind, you know more...How can you say you've honestly studied and reasearched something when you've judged it before you've even begun.
Oh btw many of these pictures have been 'colour enhanced' so its not a true representation of what were seeing. You wouldn't expect to find much light in the blackness of space right? lol
As the candy hearts poured into the fiery quasar, a wondrous thing happened, why not? They vaporised into a mystical love radiation that spread across the universe, destroying many planets, including 2 gangster planets and a cowboy world. But one planet was exactly the right distance to see the romantic rays but not be destroyed by them: Earth. So all over the world couples stood together in joy, and no one could have been happier, unless it would have been Valentines day. What? It was? Hooray!
i wonder if somewhere else, someone is watching us, Theres so much out there! heck makes me want to play Mass effect!! i really want there to be other friendly beings out there! Happy V day everyone
with the two galaxies coming together (and excuse my lack of space knowledge) wouldn't the various gravitational pulls from one another forever bind them together, and ruin any solar systems in them?
just like everywhere else in the universe space is mostly empty so i would think the individual solar systems would be mostly undisturbed except in a few rare occasions where planets would be flung into a different orbit
this is definitely the type of question for sixtysymbols , but i still think that gravity is such a weak force especially over large distances that the chances for something big enough to get close enough to something else big enough would be "astronomically" small (gotta love those puns) for anything interesting to happen at a planetary level
The gravity between two galaxies tends to pull them together but they also have momentum which tends to keep them moving as they were. Depending on how they are initially moving relative to each other they might combine or pass through each other.
Some of the strangely shaped galaxies look that way because of the gravitational disturbances caused by another galaxy passing through. Despite appearances, galaxies are very very empty so not many collisions occur.
@ConnorFlockSpeevage Thats where dark matter comes in. Calculations show that the total mass of all the "stuff" in a galaxy (bayonic matter - stars, gas - dust - planets etc) is only a tiny percentage of that required to hold the galaxy together. Nobody fully understans what dark matter is yet, but in recent months there have been a few teams around the world who think they have come very close to finding out.
@ConnorFlockSpeevage Yes they will, given enough time. Look on google for Centaurus A (NGC 5128), that galaxy is believed to be a possible merger of two or more galaxies and has completely destroyed any detail of the previous galaxies that make it up.
@Neutrinoghost Particular galaxies may combine but in general the universe is expanding and all galaxies are ultimately getting further apart. In fact it appears that this expansion is continuing even when our current theory of gravity suggests it should be slowing down, hence the need for Dark Energy to fuel the continued rate of expansion.
Yes, its gravity. The only force we know that has any net effect at these sizes is gravity.
The rotation of planets round a star, or solar systems round a galactic centre, is a combination of gravity pulling in and momentum wanting to go in a straight line. Newton showed that these two things combine to give the various orbit shapes we observe in our solar system.
Again, any corrections from real astronomers welcome.
We don't find patterns. They are there. Everything that is not forbidden is allowed because the universe was made by a process of removal, not addition.
Prior to creation everything existed together in one great whole. The only way to create the illusion of reality is to carve out, or block, connections between things, by removing their connection. This, however leaves all sorts of hidden connections as long as they don't explicitly conflict with the laws of physics. Thus, what is not forbidden is allowed means that as long as the claimed connection is not Causal, any connection can exist. Anomalies are the rule.
You should take a look at watch?v=vioZf4TjoUI and the various other Symphony of Science videos - not only are they interesting from a philosophical/scientific point of view, the music's quite good too! Plus there's plenty of Sagan involved.
@Slug99: I think it is pretty standard to pre-film videos for theme days, like Valentine's, mainly because people don't usually watch a video until a few days AFTER it is uploaded (even you watched this the day after it was uploaded!!!).
I think it's better to have people watching a themed video in the build-up to the day rather than after it has passed us all by and feels like yesterday's news....
Thanks for watching though - hope you found it interesting anyway!
You just made that number up, of course, and they're by no means perfect, but I understand what you're saying. To get an idea why that sort of rarity is not significant when compared to the vastness and age of the universe, watch youtube video /watch?v=7ImvlS8PLIo from 17:30 to 18:15. "The universe is huge and old and rare things happen all the time."
@TheReasonWhyGuy No, friend! These so-called "hearts" are marks of the devil! Satan lives amongst us! We must burn all those who watched this video or who subscribe to science! And for all of you heathens out there who believe you have wit, know that satire is a mark of the devil!
@Jambopin Not as much of a nutcase as the three people who thumbed it down. I think the biggest clue was "know that satire is a mark of the devil!" being placed at the end of a satirical comment. Kind of gives it away. My guess is that these people are now off watching some videos from The Onion and showing their ignorance there, too.
I had no idea Asylums let there patients use the internet these days. With the Universe so Exapansive Religion is no more bigger than the earth, i can imagen if there was other life and they did contact us thered be people ready to force religion upon them because that is the right thing to do (really?)..........................
@SharnOfTheDEAD Get a grip, the comment was satirical, playing along with TheReasonWhyGuy's comment (which, coincidentally, is of the same nature).
I know religious nuts are known for saying some rather bizarre things, but to say that heart-shaped patterns in space are "a mark of the devil"? If there are people who really do think like that, I hope I never have to meet one of them.
ohhhhhh i didn't see lol! but yeah heck i had a argument with one he told me dinosaurs wern't real!!! i mean there you have it! Religion is belief Science equals Fact :D
Not all religion, may I remind you it was Ibn-Al-Haytham, a Muslim scholar, who invented the 'Scientific Method', to which we judge what is fact. Of course there are idiots out there, welcome to planet earth! Not all religion is unscientific, just dont like it when you put us all under the same banner... :/
To this day not one scientific fact in the Qu'ran has been falsified, to the description of the rotating planets and order of the solar system to describing how ants communicate through vibration to which we recently discovered amongst thousands of other facts. Please don't confuse Islam with Christianity or a minority of hook wielding fanatics who are an extreme minority. I'd suggest you research the subject your making an opinion on, becuase I very much doubt you read the Qu'ran without bias.
Mars and I have something in common we both have hearts and depression and those two are closely linked.

If you don't "get" the Pale Blue Dot connection to Valentine's Day, you need to learn more about the subject.

Hug time! Cool vid but watch out these images are colour 'enhanced' but they are spectacular.
purpleprinc3 2 years ago

He is the author of the book entitled "The Bible, The Quran and Science."
purpleprinc3 2 years ago
Personally I think science started in Africa but having decimated there history cant account for much (all sides guilty). Please don't confuse Christianity with Islam, Islam has always had a strong scientific basis, to seek knowledge from cradle to grave. It is the corrupt priests & popes serving themselves who distorted the Bible which is why it is at such odds with science, unlike the Qu'ran however.Qur'an (sura 51, verse 47) "The heaven,We have built it with power.Verily.We are expanding it."
purpleprinc3 2 years ago
Just google 'Science & Islam' or check out wikipedia. Sorry but to say anyone could have come up with it is a fallacy, how could someone 1400+ years ago know of the expansion of the Universe and other such things without the scientific method to prove it. Not a single scientific statement made in the Qu'ran has been disproven to this day and I'd welcome you also to find one. Sorry but it seems to me you have already made your mind up before even reading the Qu'ran, not exactly open-minded.
purpleprinc3 2 years ago
Please quote a caption from the Qu'ran which explicitly describes the expansion of the Universe?
The quote you have mentioned does not count. If I say "I have read a book, and it has expanded my mind", does that mean my head has physically grown? NO.
Neutrinoghost 2 years ago 2
The belitting tone of your analogy goes to show your prejudice, having judged before researching the subject at hand, hardly open-minded and interlectually honest. Using deductive logic we can clearly see the scientific basis. However, as Albert Einstein said, rather then adopting the 'crusading' (Ironic no?) addtidtude of the athiest, prefer to adopt an attidtude of humility given our knowledge of this universe is described weak at best, barely scratching the surface.
purpleprinc3 2 years ago
So concerning the quote at hand, 'The Heaven...' What do you think it could be describing? Obviously not a human head, as opposed to using analogies which do not count and if you were to read it within the context it was described you'd get a better picture. Of course without knowing a single word of Arabic and never studying the Qu'ran with an open mind, you know more...How can you say you've honestly studied and reasearched something when you've judged it before you've even begun.

What? It was? Hooray!

with the two galaxies coming together (and excuse my lack of space knowledge) wouldn't the various gravitational pulls from one another forever bind them together, and ruin any solar systems in them?
ConnorFlockSpeevage 2 years ago
just like everywhere else in the universe space is mostly empty so i would think the individual solar systems would be mostly undisturbed except in a few rare occasions where planets would be flung into a different orbit
theburninator88 2 years ago
but you consider the immense amount of stars, surely they would still bind together?
ConnorFlockSpeevage 2 years ago
this is definitely the type of question for sixtysymbols , but i still think that gravity is such a weak force especially over large distances that the chances for something big enough to get close enough to something else big enough would be "astronomically" small (gotta love those puns) for anything interesting to happen at a planetary level
theburninator88 2 years ago
Do Galaxies not hold there own gravitational force then?
ConnorFlockSpeevage 2 years ago
The gravity between two galaxies tends to pull them together but they also have momentum which tends to keep them moving as they were. Depending on how they are initially moving relative to each other they might combine or pass through each other.
Some of the strangely shaped galaxies look that way because of the gravitational disturbances caused by another galaxy passing through. Despite appearances, galaxies are very very empty so not many collisions occur.
Any corrections welcome.
chrisofnottingham 2 years ago
Is it gravity that then keeps the galaxy together? What's to prevent all the various planets, stars etc from just leaving?
ConnorFlockSpeevage 2 years ago
@ConnorFlockSpeevage Thats where dark matter comes in. Calculations show that the total mass of all the "stuff" in a galaxy (bayonic matter - stars, gas - dust - planets etc) is only a tiny percentage of that required to hold the galaxy together. Nobody fully understans what dark matter is yet, but in recent months there have been a few teams around the world who think they have come very close to finding out.
Neutrinoghost 2 years ago
I'm wandering if the galaxies will join into one, and if not, why the gravity, and now dark matter too, isn't going to hold them together.
ConnorFlockSpeevage 2 years ago
@ConnorFlockSpeevage Yes they will, given enough time. Look on google for Centaurus A (NGC 5128), that galaxy is believed to be a possible merger of two or more galaxies and has completely destroyed any detail of the previous galaxies that make it up.
Neutrinoghost 2 years ago
@Neutrinoghost Particular galaxies may combine but in general the universe is expanding and all galaxies are ultimately getting further apart. In fact it appears that this expansion is continuing even when our current theory of gravity suggests it should be slowing down, hence the need for Dark Energy to fuel the continued rate of expansion.
chrisofnottingham 2 years ago
Yes, its gravity. The only force we know that has any net effect at these sizes is gravity.
The rotation of planets round a star, or solar systems round a galactic centre, is a combination of gravity pulling in and momentum wanting to go in a straight line. Newton showed that these two things combine to give the various orbit shapes we observe in our solar system.
Again, any corrections from real astronomers welcome.
chrisofnottingham 2 years ago
We don't find patterns. They are there. Everything that is not forbidden is allowed because the universe was made by a process of removal, not addition.
cybervigilante 2 years ago
Could you elaborate on this process of removal please?
Paradoxolog 2 years ago
Prior to creation everything existed together in one great whole. The only way to create the illusion of reality is to carve out, or block, connections between things, by removing their connection. This, however leaves all sorts of hidden connections as long as they don't explicitly conflict with the laws of physics. Thus, what is not forbidden is allowed means that as long as the claimed connection is not Causal, any connection can exist. Anomalies are the rule.

Slug99 2 years ago
@Slug99: I think it is pretty standard to pre-film videos for theme days, like Valentine's, mainly because people don't usually watch a video until a few days AFTER it is uploaded (even you watched this the day after it was uploaded!!!).
I think it's better to have people watching a themed video in the build-up to the day rather than after it has passed us all by and feels like yesterday's news....
Thanks for watching though - hope you found it interesting anyway!

@nige369: See my answer to Slug99... Of course it is the 14th, we even say so in the video when talking about Voyager! :)

You just made that number up, of course, and they're by no means perfect, but I understand what you're saying.

Have a nice, sane day.

SharnOfTheDEAD 2 years ago
Not all religion, may I remind you it was Ibn-Al-Haytham, a Muslim scholar, who invented the 'Scientific Method', to which we judge what is fact. Of course there are idiots out there, welcome to planet earth! Not all religion is unscientific, just dont like it when you put us all under the same banner... :/
purpleprinc3 2 years ago
Just because a religious person has made contributions to the scientific method does not imply that their religious beliefs were at all scientific.
ginogrz 2 years ago 2
To this day not one scientific fact in the Qu'ran has been falsified, to the description of the rotating planets and order of the solar system to describing how ants communicate through vibration to which we recently discovered amongst thousands of other facts. Please don't confuse Islam with Christianity or a minority of hook wielding fanatics who are an extreme minority. I'd suggest you research the subject your making an opinion on, becuase I very much doubt you read the Qu'ran without bias.
